( MEET THE DEADLINE ) Nikaela Llosa
Hey guys! I’m Nikaela Llosa (you guys can call me Nikki), and I’m a junior writer and social media manager of this year’s Deadline! As most of you could tell from some of our previous issues, I’m pretty crafty. I love any art ranging from drawing and painting to singing and dancing. A fun fact about me is that I’ve been dancing since I was in preschool. One thing you might not know about me is that I’m a Disney fanatic! One thing on my bucket list is to visit all 11 Disney theme parks around the world. During winter break, I will be going to my 5th Disney park in Hong Kong! My favorite Disney movie is “Aladdin”, which makes me super stoked for the liveaction version in 2019! Another thing that you may not know about me is that I’m a major foodie and boba fiend. I love traveling to different cities, especially ones in SoCal, to find Instagram-worthy foods to post on my foodie Instagram, @local.boba.girl! My personal account is @boba.baddie so if you want to follow me, I’ll follow you back! Don’t be afraid to say “hi” when you see me around too! Hope you enjoy the future issues of Deadline!
Hey, what’s up guys! My name’s Jason Vo, and I’m your senior writer for the Deadline. I write most of the freshman and staff interviews. Whenever I’m not busy writing for the Deadline or doing homework, I’m usually playing with my pet cat or playing video games. I love to play video games, and playing them occupies most of my time. My favorite ones are probably League of Legends, CS:GO, and Brawlhalla. I’m not a big movie watcher, but my favorite genres would be either horror or comedy! If you guys know anything about me, I absolutely love animals, especially cats. I have a tabby cat that I’ve had since 5th grade, and she’s super adorable.
2
My Instagram is @jaasonvo, and I also run a cat meme page @bigcatboi. Follow me on both, and I’ll follow back! Anyways, that’s it from me. I hope you enjoy reading the Deadline, and I can’t wait to write more for you guys to read!

Senioritis BY RILEY STRONG
It’s your last year of high school. Congratulations! All of those sleepless nights of studying and working are finally paying off. You are preparing for the next chapter in your life. You just need to make it through the last few classes of your senior year, and then you are home free. Simple enough, right? Well, not if you’ve caught a case of “senioritis.” “Senioritis” is defined as an affliction in students during their last year of high school, characterized by a decline in self-motivation or performance. It affects students every year from all around the country, including Middle College High School students. Mrs. Giannone even offered her advice to the class of 2019. She claimed, “Senioritis has really struck hard this year!” Although the concept is simple to grasp and doesn’t seem like a huge deal, it can definitely lead to difficulties in the future. Colleges notice a significant drop in grades towards the end of someone’s high school career. If the drop is too severe, they will even reconsider their admittance. Even if their admittance isn’t affected by their sharp decline in performance, their “oh-so-precious” financial aid may not be immune. Merit-based financial aid and scholarships will notice if a student’s performance drops. We were able to interview a current senior at Middle College High School, Jason Vo, who believes he has a strong case of “Senioritis.” He claims that he has begun to put “significantly less work in assignments that I (Jason) would normally be more productive on.” Despite his struggles, Jason was able to offer some advice to those underclassmen that will one day be seniors. “Don’t be like me. Work hard early on in high school so you can take it easy senior year. I feel as if it wouldn’t have hit me as hard.” The Deadline staff encourages current seniors to keep working hard! To those that will be seniors in the near future, don’t let go of your school work just yet. However, always make the best of things, and remember to have fun!

EVAN PHOUKONG Why did you come to Middle College High School? “To get ahead and to take college classes… I found out about Middle College by myself, but when I told my parents about this school, they encouraged me to go here.” What do you like the most about this school? “I really like the environment… The students are supportive, and the teachers are kind.” What hobbies do you have? “I like to practice basketball and draw… I like to program and code as well.” What do you want to become in the future? Why? “I want to become a medical doctor, and I’m hoping that I can find my specialization by the time I finish Middle College. I want to help a lot of people because I have a lot of experiences going to the hospital. I specifically want to discover new medicines, so pharmacy might be a potential route…” What’s your favorite fruit? “I like mangoes because they’re soft and squishy and sweet uwu!” What college do you want to go to? “UC Davis because they specialize in the medical field, and UC Berkeley would probably be my second option.”

DRAGON FASHION BY DIEGO PEDRAZA Christmas is coming—the time of giving and gifts! This means more clothes to wear! Don’t forget to put some stylish clothes on those wishlists this year for your family and friends. This Dragon Fashion is featuring Hailey Phan from the freshman class!

Hailey decided to show off her drip with a soft, white fluff jacket that she got from Ross (again, don’t sleep on Ross). She got her distressed jeans from Saks Fifth Avenue, and decided to go with some white laceless Vans with a little wear on them. For accessories, she has a gray scrunchie from Target. With Christmas around the corner, what better way to celebrate the times with some holiday-colored socks! Hailey got them from Forever 21!

NALA YANG BY ISABELLA ROCILI Why did you decide to come to Middle College? “I came to Middle College because of the benefits of coming here. I wanted a new start because my old friends were a bad influence, and I also wanted a head start on my education. I also wanted to challenge myself and push myself more than I can do on my own.” What are some of your hobbies? “Some of my hobbies include playing the piano, dancing (though I’m not good at it), singing, sleeping if I have time for it, and listening to music.” Where would you like to go for college? “In the future, I’d like to attend Sac State or Stanislaus for my undergraduate, and then transfer to UOP. “ What career would you like to pursue? “I want to be someone who can take care of people and someone who can help people in any way. I’m thinking of becoming a pharmacist or pediatrician.”

DEADLINE UNSOLVED: THE SETAGAYA MURDERS
Setagaya, Japan (2000)- The Miyazawa family was your typical Japanese family. Mikio and Yasuko lived with their two children, seven-year-old Niina and six-year-old Rei, in a house located in the suburbs of Tokyo. When the parents had bought this house in 1990, the neighborhood was thriving; it seemed like a pleasant place to raise a family. However, ten years later, the Miyazawa’s and three other families were the only people left living there. Most of the neighborhood had been overrun by a skate park that Yasuko and Mikio despised. They hoped to move in the next year, but a tragic incident fell upon them. December 25-29, 2000- About a week before the murders, Yasuko began complaining to her father than she had seen a strange car parked in front of another family’s house. During this time, a local store sold a knife, and it was the only item sold there. December 31, 2000- Yasuko’s mother comes over to the family’s house and finds the entire family slaughtered. The murderers stabbed three out of the four family members and strangled little Rei to death. When the police arrived, they found an array of evidence, including the murder weapons. The murderers used two knives in their assault: one bought from the store a few days earlier and one from the family’s kitchen. The knife bought at the store broke. Along with the murder weapons, clothing was also found in the house. This clothing didn’t belong to anyone in the family because it was from stores that they didn’t shop at and was none of their sizes. In fact, all the clothing was in Korean sizing instead of Japanese, and people assume that the killer had worn these clothes. Other items were found such as fingerprints, footprints, and various types of human waste. Theories- Despite piles of DNA evidence, the killer has never been found. However, through DNA testing and research, it has been found that the killer was most likely from South Korea and was a mixed race of Southern Europe and Eastern Asian. It has also been suspected that he was a part of the military at some point because there was sand found in his fanny pack that matched the sand found in military bases around Los Angeles. Other theories suggest that the murder was a skater that the family had argued with from the skate park. It has been almost eighteen years since the family’s murder, and whoever the killer is has never been found. This means, this case remains UNSOLVED.

MALIK MOORE
BY: JASON VO Let’s welcome an old face back to Middle College High School: Malik Moore. Malik has been a staple figure within our community and has been away from school due to events that were out of his control. We were given explicit permission from Malik to talk about this topic, and you can check out more on his situation on his Instagram @MooreMalikDenU. I advise you to check out his Instagram post before reading on, because he gives a detailed account on what’s been going on in his life, and it will give you a better understanding of the situation.
Q1: So Malik, what’s been keeping you strong as you go through this difficult part in your life? A1: “I would say it’s like looking at life as a video game. As silly as that sounds, it really motivates me, because when I play a game, there are many challenges and struggles. However, there is also an end goal. In life, we are all chasing that end goal, and if you are a gamer like me, you want to take on every challenge with positive energy. Otherwise, you’ll end up not having fun or becoming a toxic individual. I strongly believe that if you put out positive energy, you will receive it back, meaning that I will always try to make sure I can get a laugh or a smile so I know I’m doing my part in brightening someone’s day. I know that in the long run, it will brighten my day, as well.” Q2: How did you get back into the routine of high school after being gone for so long? A2: “This was not easy. To start, it was especially hard because my attendance and having to make up work did not just start this year—it started my junior year. In my junior year, I had a foot injury that made me miss two-and-a-half weeks, and then in the second semester of junior year, I got a bad case of bronchitis, which took me out for another three weeks (spirit week included). The teachers here have been more than fair and have been doing everything in their power to help catch me up, as well as all my homies keeping my energy up so I can succeed. Thank you, guys!” Q3: What’s one piece of advice you would give to anyone going through a difficult time? A3: “One piece of advice I would give is to not compare your situation with someone else’s, because everyone deals with stressful situations differently. Instead of comparing yourself with someone else, try opening up with someone you trust and talk it through. I know if I did not have my best friend to talk to, I would not have been able to deal with this. That being said, if anybody ever needs someone to talk to about anything, my Instagram is @MooreMalikDenU, or if you want to be anonymous, my number is (209) 3026991—just say MCHS so I know it’s not spam.” Malik continues to be a figure of resilience and positivity throughout these tough times. As Middle College students, his example should inspire us to hold onto the qualities of friendship and perseverance. If you ever see him crossing by, please be sure to offer some words of support and kindness. The Deadline team speaks on behalf of the school when we say we are here for you, Malik Moore. Today and always.

THE GREAT BRITISH BAKING SHOW (2010-2018) SHOW
The Great British Baking Show is the quintessential watch for all die-hard bakers. In this gripping and iconic competition, amateur bakers from all over Britain compete for the accolade of Star Baker. This is the perfect thing to watch when you need to relax and wind down from a stressful day at school.
STAFF INTERVIEW MR. SAHYOUN BY Jeremiah reynoso

What do you like the most about teaching? “Well, I’m a substitute teacher, not a teacher… I basically do what the teacher of record wants me to do, but I do enjoy working at this school. Students are excellent here, and I like the campus, the atmosphere, the staff, and the schedule here. I used to start work around seven, but now I get to leave around eleven o’clock.” If you weren’t a substitute teacher, what other career would you have done? “Well, I had 37 years of work with the county so that was my career. I’ve been in retirement since 2005, and I’ve been subbing ever since. I subbed before at Stockton Unified and Lodi Unified, but for the last 7 years, I’ve been subbing here only. I don’t need to be doing this; I just do it because I enjoy it.” Where did you complete your education? “What Delta used to be was Stockton College. I went to Stockton College for 2 years… then I transferred. After Junior College, I went to San Francisco State University. Then I went and finished at Sacramento State University. I basically worked three to four months with the federal government. My college degree is in Public Administration.”
KELLY’S KOOL MOVIES BROOKLYN
Brooklyn tells the story of Eilish Lace, an Irish immigrant settling into Brooklyn during the 1950s. When this movie was released in 2015, it was widely marketed as a romance featuring an impassioned love triangle. Splattered onto the promotional movie posters, you would see taglines such as “Two countries, two loves, one heart”. I expected Brooklyn to be an hour of insubstantial entertainment carried on the shoulders of Saoirse Ronan’s irreproachable charm. What I ended up watching, to my surprise, was something completely different. Brooklyn ended up being one of my favorite films of all time. At the heart of the movie is a tender storyline. Eilish Lace, played by Ronan, stumbles her way through New York City and tries to make a home for herself in all of the mess. At first, waves of aching homesickness plague her day. Slowly but surely, Eilish settles in and embraces Brooklyn. She takes night classes, volunteers at Irish community centers, and falls in love with an Italian American man. Sudden troubles back at home prompt her to return and visit her family, where she faces constant pressure to stay. Eilish must then choose between two lands: Ireland, which promises comfort and security, or America, which offers opportunity and vibrancy. Eilish Lace tackles the age-old question that millions of immigrants have faced and will continue to face—where their true home is. Brooklyn is sweet, satisfying, and above all, unpretentious. You can find it at the Delta library or rent it from several streaming services.

DEAR DEADLINE, Do you have any dating advice for all the single dragons? -kittykittyMe0wMe0w
Dear falur_sad_life, Finals are different for every class. I’d say to just go over all of your notes that you have taken in class. If your professor took the time to lecture on it, it’s probably important. Also, if there is required reading for the class that you’re taking, read that material. Sometimes professors and teachers hand out study guides for your final. If you receive one, complete it! -Xoxobanana

Dear kittykittyMe0wMe0w, Honestly, dating can be very tricky, especially at our small school. Don’t get me wrong, there are a lot of wonderful people at this school. However, if you end up dating someone in our school, get to really know them. Keep in mind that, especially for those in the same grade, you will see them everyday, which can be a good or bad thing. But if things don’t go the way you hope, that’s OKAY. It hurts to get heartbroken, but it will just make you stronger in the end. -Cl0udRhin0X
DEAR DEADLINE, How should I study for finals? -falur_sad_life
