Page 1

middlebury college commencement middlebury, vermont sunday, may 25 , 2025

For those who would like to be out of the weather, a live broadcast of the ceremony is available in two locations: Wilson Hall, in McCullough Student Center (directly behind the rain tent—handicap facilities available), and Dana Auditorium, located in Sunderland Language Center.

The Accessibility Services (ADA) tent is located on the right-hand side of the Commencement site. Phonic Ear services are located in the Accessibility Services tent.

The wheelchair seating area is located at the front, near the Accessibility Services tent.

Large-print programs are available at each program-distribution table.

Guests who wish to use the services of an ASL interpreter may be seated in the reserved ASL area. (Please stop by the Accessibility Services tent to get directions to the area.)

Before starting Stone Point in 1998, Chuck Davis worked for Goldman Sachs for 23 years, serving as head of investment banking services worldwide, co-head of the Americas Group, head of the Financial Services Industry Group, a member of the International Executive Committee, and a general partner. A Burlington, Vermont, native, Davis attended Middlebury College for two years before transferring to the University of Vermont where he was a two-sport all-conference athlete and an inductee into the UVM Athletic Hall of Fame. After graduating, Davis served as a university trustee and provided funding for the Dudley H. Davis Center. Davis has backed many Vermont businesses, including Beta Technologies, the South Burlington, Vermont–based electric aircraft company, where he serves as chairman. He is a member of the board of directors of AXIS Capital Holdings Limited and the Progressive Corporation and a former chairman and former lead director of the Hershey Company Board of Directors. In 2018, Davis was selected as one of the Financial Times’s “2018 Outstanding Directors.” Davis and his wife, Marna Olsen Davis, are co-founders and co-chairs of the Fibrolamellar Cancer Foundation and the Chuck and Marna Davis Foundation.

Marna Olsen Davis is a dedicated volunteer in her community, including at Common Cause, as an ESL teacher, as a docent at the Museum of the City of New York, and at her sons’ schools. She was an active fundraiser for Sail to Prevail, an adaptive sailing program for disabled adults and children in Newport, Rhode Island, and served on the board of the Greenwich Adult Day Care Center. She also serves on the board of directors for the Shelburne Museum in Shelburne, Vermont. She and her husband, Chuck Davis, are co-chairs of the Fibrolamellar Cancer Foundation, an organization focused on a rare liver cancer that primarily occurs in adolescents and young adults. The foundation carries on the legacy of their son, Tucker, who founded it and who died of fibrolamellar cancer at age 28. She and Chuck also founded the Chuck and Marna Davis Foundation, a Vermont-focused institution that supports numerous educational, environmental, health and wellness, and other causes. She is a graduate of St. Lawrence University.

Heather McGhee is a citizen-scholar, policy advocate, and author of The New York Times best-selling book The Sum of Us: What Racism Costs Everyone and How We Can Prosper Together, which was a Washington Post and TIME magazine “Must-Read Book of 2021.” For nearly two decades, McGhee helped build the nonpartisan public policy organization Dēmos, which works at the intersection of democracy reform, economic justice, and racial justice, and which has argued before the Supreme Court to protect voting rights. McGhee also played a leadership role in steering the historic Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act, and was one of the key advocates credited for the adoption of the Volcker Rule, a federal regulation that prohibits banks from conducting certain investment activities. She regularly appears in the media to elevate concerns of working families on programs including NBC’s Meet the Press. She is the chair of the board of Color of Change, the country’s largest online racial justice organization, and volunteers for numerous other boards in the fields of philanthropy and social justice. McGhee graduated from Yale University and the University of California, Berkeley School of Law.

GAMALIEL PAINTER’S CANE

Words by Charles B. Wright, Professor Emeritus of English, Hon DLitt, Class of 1915

Music by E. Pruda Harwood Wiley, Class of 1912 First sung at the Commencement Luncheon, June 20, 1917

When Gamaliel Painter died, He was Middlebury’s pride, A sturdy pioneer without a stain; And he left his all by will To the College on the Hill And included in a codicil a cane.

Chorus

Oh, it’s rap, rap, rap, And it’s tap, tap, tap, If you listen you can hear it sounding plain; For a helper true and tried, As the generations glide, There is nothing like Gamaliel Painter’s cane.

ALMA MATER

Original lyrics by Margaret Dounce Dale ’43 and Dorothy Hood Bittmann ’43, revised in 2018

verse 1

Walls of ivy, paths of beauty,

We have known and loved them well.

Spir-ed chapel rising proudly, Morning hymn and evening bell.

verse 2

Sunset glowing o’er the mountains

Snowy peaks and winding ways

Peaceful stillness o’er the campus

Mem’ries of most happy days.

verse 3

Loyal ever in these friendships

We have spent four glorious years

Filling us with hope and courage

Till the hour of parting nears.

chorus

Middlebury, Alma Mater, Symbol of His strength and truth. Symbol of His strength and truth. or

Middlebury, Alma Mater, Symbol of our strength and truth. Symbol of our strength and truth.

TRADITIONAL PRAYER IN THE ABENAKI LANGUAGE

An Abenaki prayer is offered by Jesse Bowman Bruchac, traditional storyteller, musician, and Abenaki language teacher. Abenaki was one of hundreds of languages spoken in North America before the arrival of settlers. In the words of Jesse’s father, Dr. Joseph Bruchac, Nulhegan elder, traditional storyteller, and author: “Our language is more than just a tool to communicate; it is also a repository of our history and our culture. It holds unique concepts and terms whose meanings deepen our relationship with and our understanding of the world around us, reminding us that everything is alive and imbued with spirit.”

CLOSING PRAYER

I congratulate you all! May your knowledge lead you to a peaceful and honest life filled with love and compassion for others. Honor those who have come before you and those yet to come, acknowledging that all desire a good life, so that your days will be long, and summer will always be near.

With each new day be thankful for the opportunities it offers you; and like the sun, become the light of the world. Let your light shine before others so that they will be inspired by your good deeds everywhere.

Middlebury College in the State of Vermont

MIDDLEBURY COLLEGE DIPLOMA

To all students of letters Eternal greeting in the Lord

Be it now known to you that the President of the College, with the approval of our honored and esteemed Fellows, has dignified and graced ________________________________________________ with the title and rank of Bachelor of Liberal Arts, and has conferred on her/him all the privileges and honors pertaining thereto. Let the official seal of the College and the signature of the President bear witness to this act.

Issued at the College on the 25th of May, in the year of the Lord 2025, and in the 249th year of the American Republic.

THE SEAL

The official seal of Middlebury College shows an open book, with simple marks for letters. The College’s motto, Scientia et Virtus (Knowledge and Virtue), is written on either side of the book. Around the edge of the seal are four abbreviated Latin words: Coll. Med. Virid. Mon. Their full form is Collegium Medioburiense Viridis Montis; in English, Middlebury College of Vermont.

GAMALIEL PAINTER’S CANE

Gamaliel Painter’s cane is one of the most treasured artifacts of the College. Once the walking stick of the founder of both the Town and the College, today it is carried by the president in the academic procession. It serves as the College’s mace and as a symbol of institutional strength and character. The president will present to members of the Class of 2025 a replica of the original cane, reminding the graduates that they go forward from Middlebury with the strength and character of the College always at their side.

THE MEDALLION

The presidential medallion, which is worn on all ceremonial occasions, carries the official seal of Middlebury College on the obverse and the name of the current president and date of inauguration on the reverse. The first presidential medallion was presented to Samuel S. Stratton by the Board of Trustees upon his inauguration as the 11th president of Middlebury College in 1943.

FLAGS 2025

The flags displayed at Commencement represent the countries of our international graduates and are flown in alphabetical order. The graduates choose the flags by which they will be represented.

ACADEMIC REGALIA

The academic regalia, which originated at Oxford and Cambridge Universities in England in the 1300s, has been in use in the United States since colonial days, although not until the 1890s was there a decided movement toward greater use of the academic regalia by senior classes, trustees, and faculties. In 1895, representatives of American schools codified standards for academic dress with the establishment of the Intercollegiate Dress Code.

THE GOWN

The flowing gown comes from the 12th century. While it originally may have been worn as protection against the cold of unheated buildings, today it has become symbolic of the democracy of scholarship, for it covers any dress of rank or social standing. Traditionally it is black for all degrees.

The bachelor’s gown is relatively simple, with long, pleated front panels, and intricate shirring across the shoulders and back. The gown is worn closed and is distinguished by its long, pointed sleeves.

The master’s gown has the same yoke effect but is designed to be worn open. It has a very long sleeve, oblong in shape with an arc cut out of the bottom of the front. The oblong is closed at the base and the forearm protrudes through a notched slit at the elbow.

Gowns for the doctor’s degree are also designed to be worn open, but carry five-inch-wide velvet panels, which extend all the way to the bottom of the garment. Three horizontal velvet bars are stitched on the upper arm of the full, round, bell-shaped sleeves. This velvet trimming may be either black or the color distinctive of the faculty to which the degree refers.

In recent years a number of universities have adopted alternative robes using their traditional school colors, such as crimson for Harvard, blue for Yale, slate gray for Columbia, maroon for Chicago, and cardinal red for Stanford.

THE CAP

When the slave was freed by Roman law, he won the privilege of wearing a cap. The academic cap is a sign of freedom of scholarship and the responsibility and dignity with which scholarship endows the wearer. Old poetry records the cap of scholarship as square to symbolize the book. The cap worn almost universally in academic processions is the Oxford cap, better known

COLORS

as the mortarboard. The tassel may either be black or reflect the scholarly subject, although only doctor’s degree recipients may have gold thread. A different style cap, the Cambridge cap, resembles a large beret.

THE HOOD

The hood is the most distinguishing feature of all academic costumes. Originally, it seems to have had three uses: as a hood covering; as a shoulder cape; or, when hung from the shoulder, as a bag in which alms could be collected.

The size and shape of the American hood mark the college degree of the wearer. The hood’s outside is bordered with velvet of the proper width to indicate the degree and the proper color to indicate the department or field of study. Thus, a degree conferred as Bachelor of Arts requires the white of arts, letters, and humanities, whereas the Bachelor of Science degree requires the yellow of science.

The shapes of the bachelor’s hood and the master’s hood are similar, the former being three feet in overall length and the latter three and one-half feet. The doctor’s hood has a base that is rounder and has an overall length of four feet. The respective widths of the velvet borders are two inches for the bachelor’s, three inches for the master’s, and five inches for the doctor’s hood. The covered lining on the inside of the hood is the official color or colors of the institution conferring the degree. Where there is more than one color, the second color is usually represented by a chevron, a wide stripe across the background color, or field. Thus, the inside of the Middlebury hood has a blue background with a white chevron.

Members of the governing board of the degreeconferring institution normally wear the doctor’s gown, but their hoods represent only such degrees as are actually held.
