By Chris Lundy OCEAN COUNTY – Experts said that heat waves, like the one the shore just went th rough, happen more now than they did in the past, and that you should expect them to happen more frequently in the years to come. Recently, the shore area has been faced with temperatures in the 90s for days on end. However, the heat index was even higher. Cameron Wunderlin, general forecaster for the National Weather Service,

explained that the heat index is how it feels, and is a combination of factors like humidity and temperature. For example, the temperature was high enough – 94 to 99 degrees - but it felt like 102 to 107 degrees. There were several days with a UV Index of 9 out of 10, which, according to the World Health Organization, means that there is a high chance for skin and eye damage if you’re not protected. Additionally, the New (Heat - See Page 4)

By Stephanie Faughnan OCEAN COUNTY – Carl Block’s tenure as the longest serving county administrator in Ocean’s history comes to an end on August 31, although he’d hoped to stay on until at least the new year. Block’s now in the market for a new job. Block, 71, became a fixture in Ocean County politics decades ago. He served as Stafford Township mayor for 26 years and was later elected to two terms as the Ocean County Clerk. (GOP - See Page 5)

School District Hiring For Field Of Dreams

Public Hearing To Be Held On Sex Ed Curriculum By Chris Lundy TOMS RIVER – The Board of Education will host a public hearing on the controversial sex education curriculum on August 15 at 6 p.m. at Toms River High School North. The meeting will also be live streamed. Additionally, a Google form will be on the district’s website, no less than a week in advance, through which residents can ask questions and give feedback. Toms River Superintendent Michael Citta said that the curriculum was designed to strike the balance between following state guidelines

and giving parents autonomy. They have been working with other similar school districts in creating this curriculum, as well as taking advice from the public. No action will be taken at the meeting, he said. In 2020, the state updated their Comprehensive Health and Physical Education guidelines, and it encompasses a great deal more than sex and gender. It is 66 pages. There are entire pages on fitness, and just a few sentences on gender identity, but that is what some parents are concerned about. Other topics include addiction, nutrition, and resolving conflicts.

The state’s guidelines can be found here:nj. gov/education/cccs/2020/2020%20NJSLSCHPE.pdf Parents have expressed concerns that the state’s rules are causing students to be “indoctrinated” into lifestyles of which the parents wouldn’t approve, or they say the parents should be the ones having these conversations with the children. Examples of sex ed materials have been spread on social media, regardless of whether they were actually going to be used in a classroom. (Curriculum- See Page 18)
