its fundraising goals. However, there are concerns about whether the annual event will come back next year. Event Lead Roxanne Stephens said the

Lacey Looks At EZ Pass Problems

By Bob Vosseller LACEY – A recent Township Committee meeting featured discussion of the annoyance of non-functioning EZ Pass poles and also included a variety of contract approvals for the purchase of police equipment. Mayor Mark Dykoff said he and Business Administrator Veronica Laureigh frequently receive complaints from residents about the “EZ Pass poles on the Parkway not registering and consequently what happens is the individuals

receive violation notices and it is kind of difficult to rectify online and hopefully you’ll get a phone call.” The mayor added that “Veronica has reached out to the highway authority and they are a little difficult to get a response from so I spoke with Sen. (Chris) Connors and our 9th District legislators who reached out to the appropriate authority to see if something could be done to assure that the poles are operational.” “The northbound entrance ramp that’s where the problem is,” Laureigh noted.

Police Purchases During the meeting the township approved contracts for a number of police related purchases including five police cars as well as a new radar system for those vehicles, and five more tasers. Laureigh told The Southern Ocean Times that “prices haven’t come in yet for the cars. We are waiting for that before we can move forward.” Dell computers were ordered for (Problems - See Page 12)

By Stephanie Faughnan BARNEGAT – Barnegat Township School District administrators held a meeting to discuss controversial updates to New Jersey’s Comprehensive Health and Physical Education curriculum. A letter sent to all families with students in the district invited them to the informational presentation. Approximately thirty parents or guardians attended the two-hour session and shared their questions and concerns. Jim Barbiere, Director of Curriculum, Instruction & Human Resources acknowledged that portions of the new mandates imposed by the Department of Education even concerned him as a parent. The district’s objective at the meeting was to provide clarification and seek input. “We’re going to focus on the actual languages of the standards, particularly those that are of higher interest,” said Barbiere. “Our goal is to gather feedback from the community.” “There’s a balancing act of what we are required by law to implement,” Barbiere explained further. “What that looks like on paper, is sometimes very different than what that looks like in the classroom.” Barbiere said that individual districts will be able to interpret the mandates in a way that meets the community’s preferences. This allowance comes as a result of local control. The State of New Jersey began overall sex education requirements in public education in 1996. (Curriculum - See Page 4)
