This is the story of a cockapoo named Bear and a Sato named Ziggy. Ken Stauffer’s dog is Bear and his son Kyle has Ziggy. They are inseparable and had so much character – espe-

cially when they were together. Both dogs came from the same adoption center, but they didn’t know each other until much later. Everyone wonders what’s going on in their

pet’s head. What are they thinking? Why are they so goofy sometimes? “My dog, Bear, has a little bit of whimsey,” Ken said. He thought (Dog - See Page 4)

Your Congress Member Could Change March 1

By Chris Lundy OCEAN COUNTY – Every ten years, congressional maps are redrawn. They are currently undergoing this process. By March 1, you might be in a new district. The 435 seats in the United States House of Representatives are split up based on the state’s population. The

$10.6M Borrowed For Roads, Police, Other Departments By Chris Lundy BERKELEY – The Township will borrow $10.6 million to finance police, fire, and first aid equipment, as well as a number of projects like road repair. The total appropriation for all the projects is going to be $11,444,805. “Appropriations” equals the amount that the town is going to assign toward projects. It doesn’t mean that’s what’s getting paid. Sometimes projects come in under budget. Sometimes over budget. In either case, the Township Council has to review the bill. Additionally, this appropriation includes money that isn’t coming from taxpayers. In this case, it’s a $200,000 grant from the New Jersey Department of Transportation. The only money the town is paying right now is a $562,240 down payment. The principal amount will be $10,682,565. That’s what will be borrowed in the form of

the newspapers under the Jersey Shore Online banner. It’s generally assumed that the 2nd District, wh ich t ou che s t he southern end of Ocean County, will gather more ground. This district is currently held by Rep. Jeff Van Drew. He began his career as a Democrat, but switched parties and is

now a staunch Trump supporter. His district has been leaning to the right a little more every year. A proposed map would see him have more of southern Ocean County, which is very red. That would mean that he would be in a strong position to maintain his seat for the foreseeable

Tragedy Shines Light On Domestic Violence

By Chris Lundy ST. AUGUSTINE, FL – A murder-suicide involving a former Toms River resident is causing the community to focus on how domestic violence is more common than people realize and what can be done about it. Detective Daniel Leyden was on vacation with his girlfriend, Sheriff’s Deputy Abigail Bieber. They both worked for the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office in Florida. Police said that during an argument, Leyden murdered Bieber before turning the gun on himself. It is unclear if Leyden, who used to live in Toms River, was ever a police officer in New Jersey. When news of the tragedy spread to Toms (Violence - See Page 8)
