By Bob Vosseller JACKSON – T he school district’s food services program was highly successful and profitable, according to Food Service Director Joseph Immordino who provided a report to the Board during a recent meeting. “The food service department had a very favorable technical review by the State with no corrective actions,” he said. “We were able to provide meals to hybrid students (those who attended live and

home instruction classes), to in school students and remote learners as well. We kept our food costs well below industry standards despite COVID issues.” Immordino noted an increase in participation in breakfast “primarily due to meals being taken home daily as well as meals sent home to remote learners and students coming into cafeterias on a daily basis.” He said that after the COVID-19 pandemic conditions began in
mid-March 2020, “all meals were provided to students for free March through June. All students were remote learners during this time period. From March through June, we served meals via pickup at various locations and we provided delivery service as well.” The director added, “for the school year 2021 the USDA cont i nue d t o m a nd at e meals for all students and during the summer plans were devel-
oped and executed with lunch added to schedules. High schools had grab and go meals at dismissal and meals included breakfast and lunch for those students as well.” In February with elementary schools going back to a five-day live schedule, meals were provided at the end of the day “and in March the same thing. Former Jackson Superintendent To Lead Toms River Schools
By Bob Vosseller TOMS RIVER – A little over a year ago, Stephen Genco retired as superintendent of Jackson Township’s School District. He’ll be coming out of retirement this fall as the interim Superintendent of Toms River Schools. Genco will replace
Thomas Gialanella, who served in that role since January 1. Gialanella is returning to his position at Ocean County College on August 1. The Toms River School Board approved Genco’s hiring as it continues its search for a long-term appointment. Genco has the qualifica-
tions to steer the district through its transition to new leadership. He is a former science teacher and rose from principal at Wall Township High School to assistant superintendent at Jackson Township School District, where he would ultimately serve as super-
intendent for seven years before retiring. Prior to Jackson, Genco led South Plainfield School District for four years, and had most recently returned to his educational roots by teaching a leadership course at Georgian Court University before being
called upon by the Toms River School District Genco remarked that he was “genuinely honored to have the opportunity to lead Toms River Schools. Over the years in my various professional roles, and through being a longtime Jersey

New Department Heads Named
By Bob Vosseller JACKSON – School Board members and administrative staff welcomed some new hires and promoted current employees during a recent Board of Education meeting. The Board voted to approve the hiring of Kristopher Soto as interim transportation director. Former Transportation Director John Griffiths resigned as director of transportation in Jackson effective June 1. He had previously headed the Edison Township School District Transportation Department. His resignation was approved at an April 28 board meeting. Board members congratulated Anthony Bruno, who took over as director of buildings and grounds from Edward Ostroff who retired earlier this month. Bruno previously served as that department’s Maintenance Foreman and was approved at a June 23 Board meeting to replace Ostroff. Lori Henry was also congratulated during the session. She was approved as the school district’s supervisor of Math and Science. Henry had served as the school district’s Math Interventionist at McAuliffe Middle School. She replaces Tina Topoleski, who retired in June. (Staff - See Page 6)
