By Bob Vosseller NEW JERSEY – Those in the medical field are on the front line of the COVID-19 pandemic. Since the health crisis began, they have seen many modifications to their daily routine and how they are treating patients.
By Chris Lundy OCEAN GATE – There were lines of vendors selling their wares. There were food trucks. There was that community feeling that has been hard to find lately. Ocean Gate Day is a huge event for the small borough. Year-round residents and those who have summer houses look forward to it ev-
ery year. While other events like Stafford’s Founders Day or the Halloween parade in Toms River were cancelled, Ocean Gate Day isn’t big enough to break the governor’s limits on gatherings. That’s not to say it w a s n’ t i m p a c t e d , though. The cardboard boat race, where people of all ages try their best
to set sail on boats made only of cardboard, tape, and crazy decorations, was cancelled by its organizers, the First Aid Squad. During the race, people line up shoulder to shoulder on the beach and on the pier and it would have been impossible to social distance. Although it was just as well, since the wind

during a pandemic. He shared with Micromedia Publications/ Jersey Shore Online. com what it has been like adapting to the ongoing pandemic conditions that health workers have been quick to respond to. “I’m a critical care
doctor and my group and I work in the intensive care unit,” Nazir said. “How we describe our role is a term we call life support specialists. On a day-to-day basis we take care of patients that are critically ill in the intensive care unit for a variety of things.”

By Chris Lundy BEACHWOOD – The fireworks over the Toms River, an iconic event that’s been celebrated for generations, has been officially cancelled for 2020. Despite Toms River being in the name, the event is actually put on by Beachwood officials and several local volunteers. A letter from Beachwood Mayor Ron Roma delivered the bad news. “The fireworks on the Toms River historically draws very large crowds (often exceeding 15,000 people in size) and having such a large concentration of people in such a relatively confi ned area would make it nearly impossible to enforce the governor’s order to limit the number of persons allowed to attend outside gatherings,” he said. Grant Will Help Berkeley Hire 10 Cops
By Chris Lundy BERKELEY – The Berkeley Police Department was awarded funding in the amount of $1.25 million which will allow the hiring of ten new police officers. The funding comes from the United States Department of Justice through the Department’s Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) Cops Hiring Program (CHP). “We have aggressively pursued this funding to help strengthen our police department without impacting local taxpayers. With upcoming retirements and a growing population, the $1.2 million in funding couldn’t come at a better time,” said Mayor Carmen Amato. Berkeley officials said they worked with their grant writers at Bruno Associates, Inc. to secure the competitive grant. It is designed to provide (Grant - See Page 4)
