−Photo by Judy Smestad-Nunn On a nice day, the Mantoloking River and Barnegat Bay are full of boats and personal watercraft. By Judy Smestad-Nunn and Bob Vosseller OCEAN COUNTY − Thirteen Barnegat Bay yacht club commodores found common ground during a recent Zoom meeting in their concern about the amount of reckless boating they have seen this year. They described seeing boaters recklessly getting too close to other boats, getting lost, disre-

garding posted rules or just being rude to other people on the water. Mantoloking Yacht Club Commodore Joe V. Celentano said due to the pandemic, there are a record number of new boaters using the bay that are not educated on the proper and safe manner to operate a vessel. “There is no regard for No Wake Zones, safe boating distancing or any of the set laws,” he said.

“I see people taking selfies and texting while going 30, 40 and 50 miles per hour.” Celentano said boats circumvent No Wake Zones by steering their boats westerly, skirting and ripping up the wetlands. “I have never seen people misusing the bay as they have this past year,” he said. “Freeholder” Title Could Change To “Commissioner”

By Bob Vosseller OCEAN COUNTY – While welcoming Ocean County Vocational Technical School dramatic art students to their new classrooms in Ocean County College, in January, Ocean County Freeholder Director Joseph Vicari explained to them his role as a Freeholder: it’s like being mayor of the county. Vicari, who is the longest serving Freeholder in the state, may soon have a different title as lawmakers move forward on legislation to eliminate the title of “freeholder.” The bill to replace the title “freeholder” with “com-

missioner” was originally proposed by Sen. Joseph Pennacchio, a Morris County Republican, in 2018. It never wound up passing. Gov. Phil Murphy, Senate President Steve Sweeney and Assembly Speaker Craig Coughlin, said the proposal was revised. A joint statement by the three Democrats called for the change saying “As our nation tears down symbols of injustice, we must also tear down words we use in New Jersey that were born from racism. It’s past time for New Jersey to phase (Freeholder - See Page 12)

July 25, 2020

By Patricia A. Miller BARNEGAT − Township officials must abide by a number of items before a new Town Hall can be built. That was the consensus of the mayor and other elected representatives at the July 9 Township Committee meeting. They responded to one of several questions submitted by a township resident asking what will be involved in a new building and who would approve the changes. Town Hall and other township-owned buildings - excluding the police department - have been closed to the public since March 16 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Plans for a new Town Hall were already underway. Mayor John J. Novak responded to a written question from a resident about the new Town Hall. All three questions were from residents who were unable to attend the meeting because of building closures. The township must focus on security in all of the buildings, especially Town Hall, he said. “We need to be austere and cost-effective,” the mayor said. “Is it going to be as fancy as we would like? Of course not.” Plans for a new Town Hall must be approved (Mayor - See Page 4)

As Shore Opens Up, Risk Increases For Crashes

By Chris Lundy JERSEY SHORE – Even though a lot of shore destinations aren’t fully re-opened, police are urging pedestrian safety. Drivers should keep an eye out for people walking and pedestrians should keep an eye out for cars. In fact, with COVID-19 closing places to go, there are more people going on walks or rid-

ing bikes for exercise or just to get out. Police departments on Long Beach Island - including Beach Haven, Harvey Cedars, Long Beach Tow nship, Ship Bottom and Surf City - partnered with Street Smart NJ, managed by the New Jersey Transportation Planning Authority. Signs will be on display (Risk - See Page 11)
