Construction equipment waits on the side of the road. By Chris Lundy BERKELEY – The construction vehicles parked out front of the Beachwood Mall property are not for the redevelopment of that property, officials said. It’s just a staging area for a gas main project. Kiely Construction is
putting in new 12-inch gas mains all along the shoulder of Route 9, Berkeley Township Business Administrator John Camera said. Most of the Route 9 work will be done at night, he added. The only things being done during the
daytime will be work that can still keep both lanes open, such as locating utilities. There is no real update to the Beachwood mall site, he said. Officials and the redeveloper are still going over the environmental issues of the site and dis-

Freeholders, Veterans Call For New Veterans Clinic To Move Forward
By Bob Vosseller OCEAN COUNTY – The county needs a new veteran’s clinic for its over 40,000 veterans and county officials are tired of the federal government’s “needless delays” in building one. That was the view expressed through a
unanimously approved resolution by the Ocean County Board of Chosen Freeholders asking the Depar tment of Veterans Affairs to fast track a new facility to replace the aging James J. Howard clinic in Brick Township. Ocean County Free-
holder Director Joseph H. Vicari said, “our veterans fought for us when we needed them and now, we are ready to fight for them. The facility and the location are simply too small.” While plans for the clinic seemed to be progressing, issues with the
federal bidding process led the VA to cancel a contract to build the clinic. “We cannot let bureaucratic problems derail this important project,” Vicari said adding that he had been contacted by a disabled Vietnam War veteran recently
asking the Freeholders to intervene personally with the VA. Vicari added, “we are working closely with Congressman Chris Smith, who is the senior member of the New Jersey Congressional delegation, and Rep. (Clinic - See Page 12)

Fireworks Postponed To Labor Day Weekend
By Chris Lundy BEACHWOOD – The fireworks over the Toms River, organized by Beachwood, has been postponed until September 5, on Labor Day weekend, Mayor Ron Roma said. “The fireworks may well have an attendance of upwards of 15,000 people,” Roma said. “This would make it impossible to practice the Governor’s order of limited outdoor group gatherings and social distancing.” It was not an easy decision to make, but after much discussion, the governing body and the Beachwood Fireworks Committee decided to move the event to the Saturday of Labor Day weekend. “Please remember to celebrate our country’s independence on July 4 by flying your American flags proudly,” Roma added. “And if you are inclined to use fireworks please use the utmost caution. Practicing fireworks safety is a must.” (Fireworks - See Page 4)
20 Mayors Call For State Reopening
By Chris Lundy OCEAN COUNTY – Twenty Ocean County mayors sent a joint letter to Gov. Phil Murphy calling for the state to be opened back up to save the economy. Everyone has been educated on how to slow the spread of COVID-19, and business owners should be allowed to open up with safety features in place, the mayors said. The stay-at-home orders have worked to slow the virus, the letter said. However, the state needs to relax restrictions on commerce. “Our citizens have learned to adjust and adhere to social distancing guidelines along with the businesses who have been fortunate enough to be allowed to open,” the letter stated. “Those businesses have adjusted their standard practices so that commerce can continue in a safe manner. It is time to allow all others to follow suit.” (Mayors - See Page 13)
