on safety in the area. The 7-Eleven opened at the intersection of Forest Hills and Grand C e nt r a l p a r k w ay s . There was already an existing traffic light there. Superintendent Triantafillos Parlapanides

said that before the store opened, police and school officials met to plan how to address the traffic and kids going there after school. During the school day, teachers are on duty, and kids can’t leave, he said. During football

Town Donates $100,000 For Worthy Cause

By Chris Lundy BERKELEY – The governing body donated another $100,000 to the Northern Ocean Habitat For Humanity which will build a house for a needy, deserving family. Mayor Carmen Amato said that the township has an Affordable Housing Trust Fund. Whenever there is new home construction or additions, they pay 1 percent of that value into the fund. Therefore, the township is able to help this good cause without using tax dollars. “With this donation, Berkeley Township has contributed one million dollars from the trust fund to local non-profit agencies,” Amato said.

Amato explained that Habitat began their work in town repairing the roof of Manitou Park matriarch Eunice Grant. It then built four houses in that area, and two of them had students from the Ocean County Vocational-Technical School working on them as a living classroom. This will be Habitat’s 20th house, and the sixth in Berkeley Township. They’ve also repaired 60 homes impacted by Superstorm Sandy. Placing a family in a home provides a stable place for them to put down roots in a safe neighborhood that they wouldn’t normally be able to afford, said

After six rounds of chemo, she may have lost her hair but she has gained a new lease on life. By Kimberly Bosco The NJ Lottery estimates that you have a one in about 300 million chance of claiming that Mega Millions jackpot. National Geographic estimates that you have a one in 700,000 chance of being struck by lightning in the US. These high odds may seem wildly unlikely, yet we still buy lottery tickets and we still seek shelter from a harsh storm. As a female, the odds of being diagnosed with ovarian cancer are a strikingly low one in 78. But does every woman take similar precautions to beat those odds? Does every woman get tested? The Silent Killer September is widely recognized as Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month in an effort to shed light on the “silent killer” that is ovarian cancer. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), ovarian cancer causes more deaths than any other cancer of (Awareness - See Page 4 )
