By Patricia A. Miller BERKELEY – Claudine and Bob Fetzer knew even before their fraternal twin daughters were born that one of them would not be able to live a normal life. They knew that her life would be short and fraught with illness and hospitalizations. They found that out when Claudine was only five months pregnant. An ultrasound determined that baby Carly’s left coronary vent ricle was much smaller than her right ventricle. It would never grow properly. The twins, Carly and her sister Ryanne, were born in May 2000. Carly had her first open heart surgery when she was just two days old. She has had several heart

Schools Increased Security In Year Since Parkland
By Chris Lundy, Jennifer Peacock, and Kimberly Bosco OCEAN COUNTY – Security has always been on the minds of school officials, and with every school shooting, the need for it is underscored more and more. A year after 17 people were killed at Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, local superintendents say that there have been added security personnel and investments to make the buildings better defended. Toms River Superintendent David Healy said that there is about $5 million in security (Security - See Page 12)
By Patricia A. Miller BERKELEY – For many years, the landmark trestle on the border of Berkeley and Lacey townships has been a refuge for many who come to enjoy the cool waters of Cedar Creek on blazing summer days or take in the peace of the woods. Unfortunately, at times it has also attracted outof-towners, drunks and even heroin users. Now that Ocean County has
begun a project aimed at connecting the existing Barnegat Branch Trail from Berkeley to South Street in Lacey Township, hopefully things will improve. The county has closed the portion of the trail from the trail entrance in Dudley Park in Bayville, around the Cedar Creek and roughly 1,200 feet north of the trestle in Berkeley Township. But parking is still available (Trestle - See Page 4)
