5 Factors to Consider When Choosing a School: Location, Size, and Campus Life Courtesy of U.S. Department of Education

ive consideration to a school’s location, size, and activities when researching colleges and career schools. Some students want to stay close to their families and others like the opportunity to go away to school to live on their own. Do you want to go to school in a big city or a small town? Do you want a small, intimate setting? A school that’s big enough to be a city by itself? Or something in between? Keep in mind that the location of a school and your housing options can impact your overall cost.

Does the school offer activities and social opportunities you like? Does it offer services you need? Does it have a good campus security system?

While the school’s website can help you determine some of these factors, a campus visit will help the most. Or, see if the school offers virtual tours of its campus.

Admission Requirements Admission requirements vary from school to school; so check the websites of all the colleges you’re interested in.

Accreditation An accredited school meets certain standards set by an independent agency. It helps ensure the training or education you get meets employer standards in a specific field.

Use our accreditation search page to check a particular school’s standards or to find an accredited school in a particular field or location.

If you attend a school that isn’t accredited, you might not be able to get any financial aid. The U.S. Department of Education requires that schools participating in our federal student aid programs be accredited. Also, your state education agency’s aid programs may not offer financial aid at unaccredited schools. Check at www.ed.gov/sgt for more information.

In addition, attending an unaccredited school poses the following risks: •You might not be able to transfer your credits to

another school. For example, if you attend an unaccredited two-year school and then transfer to a four-year school to earn a bachelor’s degree, you might have to start over again at the four-year school if it doesn’t recognize the classes you took.

•It may be difficult to get a job. Some employers may not hire someone with a certificate from a school that is unaccredited.

Work Flexibility If you need to work full-time while you’re in school, does the school have night courses or other options to accommodate you? Will they let you attend part-time? Do they offer summer courses? Check the school’s website or talk to the admissions staff at the college or career school that you’re interested in to see what are your options.

Distance Learning or Online Degrees Lots of schools have begun to offer distance learning, which allows you to access lectures or course materials online or through other electronic media. Whether a distance learning course or degree is right for you is a matter of personal preference.

Be aware that not every distance learning course or online degree is accredited and/or eligible for federal student aid. To find out whether you can receive federal student aid for your program, check with your school’s financial aid office.

W

hen it comes to educational institutions, there are many options. The one you choose will have a huge impact on you next career move. Take a look at the different types and find the one that is right for you.

Public or Private?

Because costs are often lower and admission is more open at two-year colleges, many students begin their college careers here. If you plan to start at a community or junior college and later transfer to a four-year college, you should make sure your community college courses will transfer to those colleges you are interested in and that your courses will count toward your bachelor’s degree. Many community colleges have “articulation agreements” with four-year colleges under which the course work taken at the community college transfers into the four-year degree program. Be sure to ask about the types of articulation agreements the community college has, with whom, and for what programs of study.

Public schools are operated or funded by state and local governments. Private schools are not affiliated with a government organization. They may be nonprofit colleges, such as those run by private foundations or religious denominations. Or, they may be for-profit businesses, such as Career Schools many career, online, or technical schools.

Since private schools receive less (or no) money from Career schools, also known as technical, vocational, or state and local governments, they usually cost the same trade schools: whether you live in or outside of the state. This cost is often • may be public or private, although many are for-profit higher than the cost of attending a public school in your state.

Because costs can vary significantly from school to school, you should make sure to research the schools you are interested in. Any school that participates in the federal student aid programs is required to provide information on its cost of attendance on its website. The school is also required to provide a net price calculator which will give you an idea of how much a program may cost after subtracting any financial aid.

Technical schools teach the science behind the occupation, while vocational schools focus on hands-on application of skills needed to do the job. You may earn a diploma or a certificate, prepare for a licensing exam, or study to begin work as an apprentice or journeyman in a skilled trade.

Some schools offer distance learning, which allows you to access lectures or course materials online or through other electronic media. Since not every distance learning course or online degree is accredited and/or eligible for federal student aid, check with the school’s financial aid office to find out whether you can receive federal aid.

Colleges and Universities

Four-year Colleges and Universities Students who attend a four-year college or university typically earn a bachelor’s degree once they have successfully completed a program of study, which usually takes about four years.

A college usually offers a four-year bachelor’s degree in the arts (such as English, history, drama) or sciences (such as biology, computer science, engineering). Some colleges also offer advanced degrees, such as master’s or other graduate degrees, after you’ve earned your bachelor’s degree.

Universities offer bachelor’s, master’s, and doctorate degrees, and sometimes have professional schools such as a law school or medical school. Universities tend to be larger than colleges, may have larger class sizes, and often focus on scholarly or scientific research.

Two-year Colleges (Community and Junior Colleges) Community colleges and junior colleges award associate degrees once students have successfully completed a two-year course of study. Some two-year colleges grant diplomas or certificates of completion to students who have met course requirements and are ready to practice in their career fields, such as nursing. Community and junior colleges are similar, except that a junior college is usually a private school.

What types of schools are there?

There is a wide array of schools available for higher education. Options include two- and four-year colleges and universities, vocational, trade, and career schools, online schools, and graduate schools.

Remember that financial assistance programs and requirements can vary from school to school. Plus, not all colleges and career schools participate in the federal student aid programs. Always check with your school to find out what financial aid is available there.

It’s your turn to grab the reins.

Meet Some of the Good Sports of Macomb With a highly regarded Athletic Department and several regional, state and national titles to its credit, Macomb Community College is a first choice for many high school athletes who aren’t ready to retire their cleats or jerseys just yet.

The Macomb Monarchs train in the well-equipped Sports & Expo Center on Macomb’s South Campus in Warren, where home games and meets are also held. A member of the Michigan Community College Athletic Association (MCCAA) and the National Junior College Athletic Association, the College has won six national, 42 regional and 65 MCCAA and conference championship titles throughout its history. Last year, its athletic director was also named the best in the state.

The lady Monarchs compete in softball, basketball, volleyball, cross-country and track; the men in baseball, bas-

ketball, cross-country and track. While many of Macomb’s student athletes receive scholarships to play at Macomb and four-year schools, there are also a few who have made it to the pros.

“When I got to Macomb, I was really bad at fielding. I could hit, but I couldn’t field a ball,” says Miguel Mendez, an infielder with the Wichita Wingnuts, recruited by Macomb from his Lansing high school to play for the Monarchs in 2011 and 2012. “Coach told me, ‘look, you need to improve your fielding if you want to go anywhere in this sport.’”

And as Mendez’ fielding improved, so did his prospects.

When he graduated from Macomb, he was recruited to play second base at Union College in Kentucky, where he won the Gold Glove Award for outstanding fielding and made the All Appalachian Athletic Conference Team. He graduated from Union last May with a bachelor’s degree in business before being recruited by the Wingnuts to play professionally.

“Macomb was the right choice for me. At a bigger school, I would have struggled,” says Mendez, who, unfortunately, was sidelined by an injury during his first season with the Wingnuts. “Macomb helped me understand what college is about.”

With just a little over a month into her first semester, Derriana Kelly also believes Macomb was the right choice for her. Attending on a track scholarship, she was selected to be in the cast of “The Real Students of Macomb,” a year-long project to chronicle the experiences of a group of 2014 high school graduates during their first year Macomb.

“It’s been a lot of fun,” says Kelly, a high school track star who earned several regional championships, of the “Real Students” project. “I have started to get to know the other girls and hang out with them. None of my friends from high school go to Macomb, so this has been great.”

But, while she is having fun with the video project, is doing great in all her classes, appreciates the libraries’ quiet study space, as well as the free biology tutoring in their adjacent learning centers, and enjoys grabbing a convenient coffee at The Mug, Kelly reserves the widest of smiles, on camera and off, for the upcoming track and field season.

“We’ve already started practicing,” she says. “I can’t wait for the first meet.”
