Welcome to The Quad! The Quad is designed to assist in your life-changing pursuit of higher education. Your decision to attend college is an important first step and there are many more to follow. We want to help you navigate through the process.

Earning a college degree can help you help yourself. It can help you earn a better living as well as help you move up the career ladder.

As long as you live, you can learn. Age doesn’t matter. You are never too old to learn. Whether you are graduating from high school or you’re over 40, you can learn. You don’t have to go far, because the community serves you. There are educational institutions right in our community.

Davenport University Meets the Needs of Urban School Districts

Davenport University’s College of Urban Education (CUE) is hosting a teacher and principal certification open house on March 5th at their Detroit campus located at the New Center One Building, 3031 Detroit, MI 48202.

Those attending will learn about the CUE teacher alternative route certification program and the Michigan Elementary and Middle School Principals Association (MEMSPA) principal alternative route certification programs. CUE faculty and Davenport University representatives will be available to answer questions about these programs and available tuition assistance opportunities.

It’s no secret that attending college can be expensive.

Fortunately, there is money available—you just have to know where to look.

Student Financial Aid: Funding Your College Education It’s no secret that college is expensive. In addition to tuition, you have to purchase or rent textbooks and supplies, pay for room and board, and perhaps purchase a computer or another piece of expensive equipment. You may even have to pay for childcare if you have dependent children. Fortunately, there is money available—you just have to know where to look.

How to Apply for Federal Student Aid It’s easy to begin the application for federal student aid, regardless of the type, using the “FAFSA” form. “FAFSA” stands for Free Application for Federal Student Aid. We recommend filling out the form as soon as possible. Many high school students complete the form their senior year so that they have a better idea of the money they are eligible for. And colleges and universities have their own deadlines as well. You can usually find the form on the financial aid page of the university you are considering.

Aid from the State of Michigan Even if you’re not eligible for federal financial assistance, you might qualify for financial aid from your state. Contact your state grant agency for more information. In Michigan, student residents can research MI Student Aid to find access to programs.

Aid from a Nonprofit or Private Organization You’ll have to dig deeper, but there is money available from unlikely sources. Perhaps your parents’ employer offers scholarship money. Many community service organizations, such as the Rotary, also provide financial assistance.

• Wear Wayne swag and fit right in. Show that you want to be where you have been placed. Wearing clothes that rep other schools is not endearing when you drop by during your professor’s office hours to seek clarity on an assignment or more information about class.

Living on Campus • Pack your bags and actually head off to school: Commit to campus. Freshmen and sophomores should plant themselves on the campus and become comfortable spending several weeks at a time here, without returning home, just as you would if you went to school out of state.

• Explore Midtown and locate nearby places for your personal services and shopping needs.

• Know thyself. If you’re easily distracted select a study spot that will support your desire to achieve. Like chit-chat? Seek out new friends who truly fit your style.

• Stay off the highway. You’re enrolled in Wayne and it’s time to strike out on your own without your high school friends. If they went away to State, you should certainly check it out once or twice but you’ll never be content at home if you spend all of your time on the road.

• Don’t be content to be a “parking meter student” who screeches up just in time for class then leaves campus right after. There’s plenty of time for “adulting” later – throw yourself into student and campus life now.

• Buy a parking pass. The time and effort expended circling the block for a meter, or hiking in from that secret free parking space near the Ambassador Bridge, could be better spent on campus - in class or in community with fellow students. Budget for this expense.

• Explore the campus and Midtown. Locate places to lunch and lounge, like the new Student Center. Being in the mix makes it more likely that you’ll hear about the opportunities that pique your interest.

• Don’t join the car culture, those few students who spend their breaks holed up in their vehicles instead of being a part of the Wayne community. They’re letting their desire to be comfortable rob them of new experiences. Don’t take the easy route. Challenge yourself.

• Center your life around campus. Leave your old neighborhood behind. Can you find a job on or near campus? Working in Midtown keeps you engaged and makes it more likely that you’ll drop in on that world-class speaker or dignitary being presented to the students of Wayne.

Many of these tips will translate to the experience of attending other schools in Detroit, so try them on for size.

In short, you’ve made your choice of educational institutions – now go to your campus and make your mark!

| TESTING There are many who would agree with you that one of the most anxiety inducing aspects of the college application process is standardized testing. We hope to put you at ease with some information to help you navigate your journey. Test taking is all about strategy, and it is never too early to start preparing for the SAT or ACT. We often read articles and studies that question the relevancy of these tests in relation to a student’s successful collegiate career. The truth is, that until there is a unanimous decision to get rid of these tests completely, both the SAT and ACT are going to be a part of the application process for most colleges and universities and should be taken seriously.

Common myths about the SAT & ACT: • The SAT is more difficult than the ACT • Colleges prefer SAT over ACT • If you have good grades, there is no need to study for the SAT or ACT • You cannot take the ACT or SAT multiple times

One major downfall for most students is waiting until junior year of high school to begin preparing, which leaves little room for score improvement and strategy retention. The majority of the content covered on both tests are learned by sophomore year, however the questions are phrased and presented in ways that may feel unfamiliar to you. The key to becoming a strong test taker is to sharpen your analytical skills, learn how to read different types of graphs and be able to properly synthesize information. You should take an ACT or SAT diagnostic test to assist in best determining which test is the right fit for you.

According to the College Board, the average SAT score in 2018 was 1068, while the ACT average was 20.9. Nevertheless, these averages to do not determine what a “good” score is, and you will need to take the time out to research the admission requirements for the schools that you are interested in applying to in order to decide on your personal SAT & ACT score goals. When researching admission requirements, we suggest not only exploring the scores that

will likely grant you admission but will also award you scholarships as well.

It’s most important to remember that SAT & ACT scores are just a slice of the pie when it comes to whether you are admitted into any school. Your grades, extracurricular involvement and community service are certainly important factors, and sometimes can be your saving grace if your test scores are not as high as you’d like them to be.

3 Factors to consider when choosing a school: Location, Size, and Campus Life Give consideration to a school’s location, size, and activities when researching colleges and career schools. Some students want to stay close to their families and others like the opportunity to go away to school to live on their own.

Do you want to go to school in a big city or a small town?

Do you want a small, intimate setting? A school that’s big enough to be a city by itself? Or something in between?

Keep in mind that the location of a school and your housing options can impact your overall cost.

Does the school offer activities and social opportunities you like? Does it offer services you need? Does it have a good campus security system?

While the school’s website can help you determine some of these factors, a campus visit will help the most. Or, see if the school offers virtual tours of its campus.

Admission Requirements Admission requirements vary from school to school; so check the websites of all the colleges you’re interested in.

Accreditation An accredited school meets certain standards set by an independent agency. It helps ensure the training or education you get meets employer standards in a specific

field. Use our accreditation search page to check a particular school’s standards or to find an accredited school in a particular field or location.

If you attend a school that isn’t accredited, you might not be able to get any financial aid. The U.S. Department of Education requires that schools participate in federal student aid programs be accredited. Also, your state education agency’s aid programs may not offer financial aid at unaccredited schools. Check www.ed.gov/sgt for more information.

In addition, attending an unaccredited school poses the following risks: •You might not be able to transfer your credits to another school. For example, if you attend an unaccredited two-year school and then transfer to a four-year school to earn a bachelor’s degree, you might have to start over again at the four-year school if it doesn’t recognize the classes you took.

•It may be difficult to get a job. Some employers may not hire someone with a certificate from a school that is unaccredited.

Work Flexibility If you need to work full-time while you’re in school, does the school have night courses or other options to accommodate you? Will they let you attend part-time? Do they offer summer courses? Check the school’s website or talk to the admissions staff at the college or career school that you’re interested in to see what are your options.

Distance Learning or Online Degrees Lots of schools have begun to offer distance learning, which allows you to access lectures or course materials online or through other electronic media. Whether a distance learning course or degree is right for you is a matter of personal preference.

Be aware that not every distance learning course or online degree is accredited and/or eligible for federal student aid. To find out whether you can receive federal student aid for your program, check with your school’s financial aid office.

“My work-study job in the 70’s was with the United Artists and Craftsmen Guild that sponsored the Ann Arbor Street Fair, which has grown to be one of the largest art fairs in the country,” says Linda Moragne, U of M grad. “As a graduate student, I worked full time at a local radio station and attended classes after work. I just did not want to acquire a big loan and have that debt. I worked. Today, the debt load that students carry was unheard of during the time I attended college. Times change and funding must come in various forms.

It costs more; however there is funding available.

Scholarships and grants are available to help offset the cost of education. If these sources are not available, one can consider work-study.

How to Choose an Affordable Laptop to Fit Your Needs

By Willie Brake It’s about that time where you will find tech deals just about every place you look and life is hard enough without worrying about which laptop to buy. For anyone shopping for a new system, the choices can seem overwhelming.

With so many models, options and specifications to consider, you may feel like you need to sign up for Laptop 101.

STORAGE: If you don’t need a huge hard drive, definitely consider a system with a solid state drive.

These drives run faster and cooler than their mechanical counterparts because they have no moving parts. They cost a bit more, but in my opinion, they’re worth every dime.

KEYBOARD: Make sure you spend some time with the keyboard to ensure that it is a comfortable fit. If the keys feel mushy or not to your liking, move on to the next model. More than likely, this is a device you will be using every day. If you purchase a $500 laptop, or even a refurbished laptop be sure you’re getting a system that feels like a quality laptop, not two sheets of veneered plywood held together with a rusty door hinge.
