You might be a high school student embarking upon your first time away from home living on campus at a large university, or a 40-year old who has decided to change career paths and is looking into educational opportunities. Whether you will be a fulltime or part-time student, you can find helpful information in THE QUAD. The Quad provides information about college life, expectations, experiences and special programs.

This publication will introduce you to the educational institutions where you can explore opportunities. We want to present information to you thru this publication that will assist you in preparing for your future.

While college might not be for everyone, education certainly is. You can acquire an education in a non-traditional classroom or from online courses.

In addition, you might consider the job forecast for the next 10 years. Preparing for the careers that will be in demand, might not be a bad idea. Some will require highly skilled practitioners.

You might consider skilled trades training at the community college level and thru special training centers.

LOWERING THE COST OF STUDENT LOAN DEBT We are facing an American crisis of student loan debt.

This crisis is one that families are discussing as they consider financial options available to pursue a college or university education.

One source says that more than 44 million Americans have student loan debt, and that it has become one of the biggest consumer debt categories.

So, if student loan debt is not going away, how can we lower the cost of receiving a quality education?

CONSIDER THESE TIPS: CREATE A PLAN OF ACTION

Unexpected costs can derail even the most driven students. Think broadly about college cost and create a plan that takes these cost, plus unknown cost, into account. Ask yourself: What’s necessary to finish college faster and put my degree to work quicker?

CONSIDER COST SAVING BENEFITS OF COMMUNITY COLLEGE

“For many families, the selection of a community college is the best fit to put their students on a journey toward student success and completing their college degree” says Dr. Kimberly Hurns, Vice President for Instruction at WCC. Many students will save at least $21,000 by taking their first two years (60 credits) of courses at WCC compared to the top 20 largest four-year colleges in Michigan. WCC also offers many programs with articulation agreements that allow students to transfer after three years, rather than two, saving the student even more.

TAKE COLLEGE COURSES WHILE IN HIGH SCHOOL

“Community College is an important “financial aid” strategy if students attend during high school, prior to going to college or during the summer breaks” says Dr. Hurns. Find out what partnerships exist between your high school and community college for dual enrollment, career and technical education, and early/middle college programs. The tuition is often paid by the school and students can earn up to an associate degree or 30 credits. That’s a year or more of college paid for by the time you finish high school.

SEEK SCHOLARSHIPS

Of course, you will do the easy stuff like completing the FAFSA and other aid forms on time. But also make time to talk with your school’s financial aid department. They can help you find out what scholarships are out there and which you qualify for. Spend time looking for scholarships and applying. Students that secure scholarships will have less debt and be able to take more classes so that they are able to finish their degree program quicker.

LEVERAGE OPEN EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES

Books are expensive. In health care and science majors, students can spend $800 to $1,200 each semester on textbooks. At WCC, this expense is declining with open education resources, also known as OERs. This program has saved students about $2 million since it began. Where OERs don’t yet exist, students can often rent books for a fraction of the cost of purchase.

STAY ON TRACK WITH YOUR DEGREE

It’s important to stay on track with your degree. The longer you are there, the more it costs. At WCC, we offer Degree Works, a program devoted to helping students stay on track to completing their degree program. Be one of the students who graduates on time and save money in extra tuition. When you factor in lost time you could be earning money in the workforce, finishing on time is a no brainer.

Attending college may or may not be the obvious next step after high school. But given that Americans collectively owe more than $1.5 trillion in student loans, it seems appropriate to revisit the question: Is college worth it?

The more educated you are, the more likely you are to have employer-provided health insurance. For instance, 54% of full-time workers with a high school diploma had employer-provided health insurance in 2015, compared with 66% of bachelor’s degree holders and 70% of advanced degree holders, according to a 2016 College Board report.

Research, Partnerships and Internships CMU students graduate career-ready At CMU, students are more than learners and faculty are more than teachers.

Their work also helps preserve local heritage sites and creates a greater public appreciation for them.

Through mentorship and collaboration, CMU students and faculty are working together to identify and solve problems with worldwide impact, lead groundbreaking research, gain hands-on experience, and graduate career-ready.

CMU’s student-driven research also includes a mobile weather observation vehicle outfitted with computers and meteorological instruments to measure temperature, wind speed and direction, humidity, and more. This allows students to follow weather-related cold fronts and collect data about storms. CMU is the only Michigan university to have such a vehicle.

There are experiential learning opportunities across all of CMU’s more than 200 undergraduate academic programs.

Students have access to the 227 laboratory facilities starting their freshman year on campus.

In those labs, students are examining antioxidants to find more effective ways to prevent cancer, studying the effects of stress and aging on reproduction to help to solve fertility problems, determining how to cut off energy to a cell’s mitochondrial DNA to stop the spread of diseases, and researching how to deliver DNA to cells affected by brain disorders to treat diseases like Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s.

“Being able to do cancer research at only 19 years old is amazing. I get to make a big difference,” said Gretchen Holtgrefe, a biochemistry major who started researching at CMU during her freshman year.

While researching with faculty, students are developing their critical thinking and problem- solving skills. They also are able to translate the concepts they learn in class to the real-world examples in front of them.

Mobile weather observation vehicle Students across campus are working collaboratively to help educators position themselves to help children cope with traumatic experiences called Adverse Childhood Experiences. Research has shown that children who have a high number of ACEs are more likely to struggle in school and have lifelong health effects. CMU students are working to empower people across the country with tools to not only understand the effects

of ACEs but also counteract the negative experiences. CMU’s future educators are taking a trauma-informed approach to consider the root cause of student behavior and create safe learning spaces. Additionally, students participate in a workshop series where they learn about how stress and trauma affect brain development, what it can look like in their classrooms, and how to help children understand and cope with ACEs. As a Creative Action Partner, CMU collaborates with the Traverse City Film Festival and provides students with on-site learning experiences and resume-building opportunities. CMU students earn internships with the festival, which is fully run by college students and volunteers. From keeping things running smoothly to producing real, meaningful pieces used throughout the event, students showcase the skills they’ve learned and walk away with film credit on their resumes. Not only does this take learning outside the lecture hall, it helps lay the foundation for a future career in film with finished, professional pieces that can be sent to potential employers.

With countless opportunities and hands-on experiences, it’s easy to see why more than 18,000 employers recruit CMU students.

At CMU’s Biological Station on Beaver Island, students are working on Great Lakes preservation and conservation. Students are able to spend their summers researching ways to clean up potential environmental damage that might be caused by an accidental oil spill, conduct wetlands research through a grant from the EPA, and investigate what is causing the disappearance of Great Lakes whitefish in hopes of restoring their population.

CMU students have been cataloging and excavating a site at the Fort Gratiot Lighthouse in Port Huron, Michigan, since 2016. Students engage with park visitors, share their findings and answer questions, providing career training for those hoping to pursue jobs in cultural resource management.

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is the application most colleges use as the basis to judge how much aid for which students will be eligible. Some colleges require you to fill out a more extensive CSS Profile instead, but let’s focus on the FAFSA. The application for a given aid year opens on October 1 of the year before that university’s academic year begins. For example, the FAFSA that covers Fall 2020 through Summer 2021 will open on October 1, 2019. Although you can wait until later in a given semester to fill out the application and still receive federal aid, colleges also use the FAFSA for information to judge your eligibility for need-based grants and merit scholarships. Some of these awards might be a first come, first serve. So, the sooner that you apply, the better.

Similarly, as early as the summer before beginning senior year of high school, students should start doing two things. First, start looking for scholarships that will apply to their first year of college. Many colleges keep a database of outside scholarships on their financial aid site. Otherwise, online databases such as fastwebs.com and scholarships.com are good places to begin a scholarship search. Second, families should start gathering the documents they will need to fill out the FAFSA or CSS profile. Certain tax documents can take weeks for the IRS to send, so it is important to request copies of these as early as possible. Furthermore, a student and their family should have

Even in these situations, there are a few other remedies that might be available. Effective communication is the best path towards additional aid. The more details on your specific circumstances that you provide to the financial aid office of each school, the better off you will be. In instances where the FAFSA does not accurately reflect your family’s ability to afford school, most universities have policies in place that might allow advisors to use professional judgment to make a more accurate assessment of your circumstances. In many cases, this leads to students receiving more financial aid than they were slated to. Speaking out becomes more beneficial the earlier a family does it. This is because some schools have deadlines in place for considering special circumstances. Beyond this, a student could look into part-time work to help with costs, or ask their school about fulfilling certain requirements at a community college, where the costs are often much lower. And this is all before considering how much a student can save just by going to school in-state or by living off campus.

Paying for college can be one of the highest hurdles for a family to clear. Following every best practice will not lead to every family having to pay zero dollars for their child’s education. But being proactive each year and exhausting every option available is the best way to ensure that your family sticks the landing.

You have to submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA, for each school year to qualify for grants, scholarships, federal work-study and federal student loans. But deadlines vary for federal, state and institutional aid. The two most important dates you need to remember are Oct. 1 and June 30.

Each year, the FAFSA opens on Oct. 1. File your FAFSA as close to Oct. 1 as possible to improve your chances of qualifying for the most grant, scholarship and workstudy aid. Applications began being accepted for the 2019-20 school year on Oct. 1, 2018. For the 2020-21 school year, the start date is Oct. 1, 2019.

Certain aid is awarded to students who apply the earliest, such as federal work-study dollars and many state and institutional grants and scholarships.

The federal government gives students a deadline of June 30 after the school year in which they need aid — for instance, June 30, 2020, for the 2019-20 school year or June 30, 2021, for the 2020-21 school year — to file the FAFSA. But you have to submit the form much earlier to meet financial aid deadlines for your state and college and to get your aid dollars in time for the start of the school year.

State and institutional FAFSA deadlines States and individual colleges set their own FAFSA deadlines that are typically much earlier than the federal one. You have to file your application by these deadlines to qualify for state and institutional grants and scholarships. If you’re attending an out-of-state school, you may not qualify for state aid — check with the state to see if you do. Find your state financial aid deadline on the Federal Student Aid website.

Next steps Track colleges’ financial aid deadlines. Priority deadlines at individual schools often fall the earliest, so those deadlines are the most important to track. Those dates are also the best chance to get the most aid. Look up the deadlines for all of the schools you’re applying to and write them down in one place — try using your phone’s calendar, a spreadsheet or a notebook dedicated to your college search.

Submit any other financial aid applications. Many schools require additional or alternative financial aid applications, such as the CSS Profile, to qualify for state or institutional aid. You’ll need to submit all the required paperwork before the deadline to be considered for aid.

Above all, remember Oct. 1. It’s not a deadline, but if you submit your FAFSA soon after that day, you’ll cover all your bases.

Wait for your financial aid award letter, which details how much free aid you qualify for and how much in federal loans you can borrow. (See “How to Get a Student Loan.”) You may appeal your award if you didn’t get enough aid.

By Jordan Woods When making decisions post-high school, it is imperative that you keep an open mind in regard to the path that you take toward your goals. This could involve making several decisions that force you to sacrifice your ego in service of something bigger. A perfect example of this is the prospect of going to community college as opposed to a four-year school. For some, there is a stigma that attending community college somehow represents a ceiling on how far your career can go.

This couldn’t be further from the truth. In fact, for many people, community college represents a springboard to a more debt-free, rewarding career, whether that is paired with a fouryear experience or not. For example, the University of Michigan’s MPOD program offers networking, mentorship, class selection assistance and application support to students looking to transfer from specific community colleges across the state, including Oakland Community College and Macomb Community College.

If this applies to you and your goal is still to transfer to the four-year school, it’s important that you are in constant communication with the universities you are targeting. Pretty much every degree granting four-year institution has its own university-wide course requirements, and each program within the universities have their own requirements.

So, if you are taking certain classes with the expectation that you will transfer the credits to another school upon completion, but the other school doesn’t accept the credits, you will find yourself having wasted valuable time and money without having moved that much closer to your goals.

Beyond whether or not certain courses will be accepted, you should also consult with your targeted schools to see if taking certain courses at a community college will improve your chances of successfully transferring to that school. With that being said, do not feel that transferring to a four-year college has to be the end goal. Another reason people attend community college is because of the huge cost savings that one could potentially see by taking required courses at the community college, versus at four four-year institution they currently attend or want to attend.

Some students are able to fulfill certain degree requirements for as little as one-tenth (!) of the per credit cost of what a fouryear institution charges. Again, it is important to make sure that your credits will transfer successfully, while also keeping in mind the course grade you need for the transfer to be granted.

While four-year institutions get most of the fanfare, many of the people that attend them and make them successful started at community colleges. Make your decision on whether or not to include community college in your plan through a lens that takes into account the skill set that you need to be successful in your chosen field, while also familiarizing yourself with the success stories and failures of people who walked paths similar to the one you are starting.

From internships to field trips to speakers with national credentials, Macomb Community College is committed to providing as many learning opportunities outside of the classroom as in. It’s an experiential approach that makes many students feel “empowered.”

“As soon as I started taking classes at Macomb, my life changed immediately. All these doors started opening,” says Jessica Daffin-Thompson, a Cass Technical High School graduate and journalism/political science major. “You don’t have to be a stellar student to start here, you just show your professors that you want (to learn), and they will help you get there.”

Since her first class last January, Daffin-Thompson has been mentored by her political science professor, which led to a Democracy Fellowship from the Campus Vote Project. She also had the opportunity to chat one-on-one with two famous journalists (Woodward and Bernstein), visit Washington, D.C. and intern in the Warren office of U.S. Congressman Andy Levin.

With its “living lectures,” professors who “want to be here,” and “never-ending, exciting experiences,” Daffin-Thompson says she feels, “at home at Macomb.”

Like Daffin-Thompson, Neal also traveled with political science classmates to Washington, D.C. this past spring. A grant from the college’s Thomas S. Welsh Fund for Public Service “As soon as I started taking classes at Macomb, my life changed immediately. All these doors started opening,” says Jessica Daffin-Thompson and Political Science lowered the individual cost to $300. That made it a manageable expenditure for Neal, who works at a Dairy Queen, and Daffin-Thompson, a married mother of one.

In addition to the Capitol tour, which offered students insight into all three branches of the federal government, there was a visit to select museums of the Smithsonian Institution.

“This was my first time in the African American Museum, and while the content, at times, could be hard to look at, I felt a sense of unity with myself and my identity,” says Neal. “It was empowering.”

By Jasmin Lee The summer before college is a moment of sad endings and new beginnings. It was the first time in my life where I did not know what to expect. Every summer, my mom would buy school supplies based on the Office Max recommended grade list and I would work on my summer reading. The routine of getting ready for a new school year was simple and familiar, I never questioned what I needed to prepare for the school year.

This year, however, was different. I was going to college, which meant I was moving away from home and needed more than just notebooks and pencils. College did not hit me until all my friends left. I spent more time this summer with my friends knowing that I would not see them for a long time, but hoped to keep our relationship going despite our distance. It was hard to think about college around them.

We would talk for hours about our fears, hopes, and best memories of high school, but that only made it seem less real. It was not until the last night we all spent together, sitting around a bonfire and looking at the pile of boxes that would be packed into my friend’s car the next day, that I started to accept the fact that I was going away.

Realizing this at the last minute was not necessarily due to sadness, but to the dream of college that had seemed so far away ever since I was a child. I was finally going to have the best experiences of my life that many people had told me about, but those experiences were yet to come.

The week before I moved, I had started packing my clothes. After that, I started packing up my school supplies, books, and personal belongings. I still had plenty of time to do so, but I wanted to make sure I had everything I needed for college.

That transition was awkward. It was the first time I had the problem of figuring out what to wear because all of my clothes were packed for college. My room had been stripped of those belongings that meant the most to me and only contained items I wanted to leave behind. It made me think about the past and my worries for the future. I was scared about doing my own laundry, making friends, and so many other things that I had to do by myself. The fear of not being able to assimilate into society

as I was transitioning from a child under my parents’ roof to a fully functioning adult had engulfed my emotions during that week and continued to do so until I settled into campus.

Moving into college was less stressful than I thought it would be. Everyone was rushing to get bins and move their belongings into their rooms. Once everything was inside, I got to work unpacking and setting up my room. The experience was hectic, but everything worked out in the end. I met my roommate later that day and we got dinner together. That night, there was a game night for everyone in my building.

I met some people and we ended up playing a card game called Phase 10 that took almost 3 hours to complete. During those three hours, we got to know each other better through conversation and pretty soon I realized that I had made some new friends.

The most incredible thing about that night was that everyone who participated in that card game lived in the same hallway as me.

Since then, we have become friends and I have made more friends along the way.

While I can only speak to my experiences, moving into college is not as scary as I imagined. All I did was be myself and I quickly found a community that I can rely on no matter what. We have made so many new memories and we have so much more time to create more memories. All that being said, I know people who did not find their community right away and that is normal. Once classes started, I was able to meet even more new people and sign up for clubs. The people I knew who were shy have started to go out and create a community of their own.

College is very much idealized to be the best time of your life, but the reality is that you create your own experiences. There is a big mentality that you make the most out of everything and if you put in the effort, then you will see the results in the long run.

Therefore, my advice to those who worry about college is to be yourself and do what you have to do. There will be many opportunities and ideas thrown at you in school, but the only way to make the right decisions is to stay true to yourself and do what you know is best for you.

You Can Go Blue: U-M’s Go Blue Guarantee offers free tuition for in-state students with demonstrated financial need The University of Michigan is keeping true to its academic and cultural mission, built on the ideal that education is a democratizing experience that transcends socioeconomic class, with the Go Blue Guarantee.

Assets that are considered for Go Blue Guarantee qualification include home equity, savings and checking accounts, investments, real estate, and business net worth, but not retirement accounts.

For Michigan residents with a family income less than $65,000, and assets up to $50,000, U-M will cover the full cost of tuition as long as they apply to Michigan, are admitted, and apply for financial aid by March 31, 2020.
