library card provides endless opportunities to transform the school year.
As students prepare to head back to school, there is one essential school supply that requires no shopping and doesn’t cost a penny – it’s a library card. This September, the Detroit Public Library is joining with the American Library Association (ALA) and libraries nationwide for Library Card Sign-up Month, to encourage parents, caregivers and students to obtain a free library card that will save them money while reaping rewards in academic achievement and lifelong learning. Whether it’s providing free access to STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics) programs, educational apps, or in-person and virtual homework help, a library card is one of the most cost effective backto-school supplies. Resources at the Detroit Public Library are available to anyone with a library card. Libraries play an important role in the education and development of children. Studies show children who are read to in the home and who use the library perform better in school and are more likely to continue to use the library as a source of lifetime learning. During September, DPL will host several library card sign-up activities, see below, or check www.detroitpubliclibrary.org for the most up-todate listing.

October is National Book Club Month O
ctober is National Reading Group Month and what better way to
engage with reading than in a book club? There’s nothing better than sitting down with a good book and enjoying it by yourself, unless you are sitting down with an agreeable group of other people, sharing your thoughts and opinions about a good book. Here are a few of the reasons why a reading group is a great idea: • • • • •
Stretching you comfort zone with a title that you wouldn’t ordinarily choose. Meeting new people or connecting with friends in a comfortable environment. Gaining a new perspective about, well, everything! Life, love, people, history, social issues; the list goes on and on. Expressing your thoughts, feelings, and opinions in authentic, real, face-to-face conversation, instead of through a keyboard or screen. Expanding respect and consideration for other people’s opinions. The best books all have room for different meanings and interpretation.
10| DETROIT PUBLIC LIBRARY PATHWAYS
Detroit Public Library makes it easy to join the conversation. We can assist you in starting your own reading group, and most DPL locations host established book clubs that welcome new members. Detroit Public Library loves book clubs so much that DPL has a Book Club in a Bag program that delivers multiple copies of new and classic titles to any DPL location for your book club to read. This saves the group members the time and expense of buying or borrowing each title. To take advantage of this program, all that is needed is a DPL Book Club Library Card. Any DPL librarian can help you find a book in the program that your group might enjoy, and a selection of the Book Club in a Bag titles are highlighted on our webpage. Visit your local DPL location today to get started, and Happy National Reading Group Month!
