Black leaders clash over possible MLK memorial at Stone Mountain Park
By Terry Shropshire Civil rights leaders and the Sons of Confederate Veterans have absolutely nothing in common, except that they breath the same air and the two groups have rarely, if ever, agreed on anything, except that water is wet — and maybe not even then. So it is certainly news when the two groups, who operate on opposite sides of the sociopolitical spectrum, could possibly find a commonality from which to operate. When a proposal was forwarded to place a monument to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on Stone Mountain in Georgia, it came under attack from civil rights leaders and Sons of Confederate Veterans alike — albeit for very different reasons. It was sort of like watching water running uphill or seeing the sun rise on the wrong side of the country, watching these two groups echo each other sentiments on a subject such as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Both the Atlanta and DeKalb County branches of the NAACP and the national office of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference want to halt the plan because the site venerates the Confederacy, In fact, they’re calling for the removal of Confederate images there altogether. But two of the Dr. King’s closest confidantes during the Civil Rights Movement do not agree with the SCLC and NAACP, and believe a monument erected in MLK’s honor is not only necessary but long overdue Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal and the Stone Mountain Memorial Association approved a plan to build an elevated tower that would feature a replica of the Liberty Bell. It would honor King’s “I Have a Dream” speech, which references freedom ringing from the Stone Mountain of Georgia. The plan also includes a permanent exhibit of black soldiers in the Civil War. Gov. Deal has totally reversed himself on the cause. After initially supporting some sort of monument honoring Dr. King atop Stone Mountain, he is distancing himself from the uproar erupting from both civil rights groups and the Sons of Confederate Veterans, both of whom oppose any monument alongside or in proximity of the Confederate heroes etched into the side of the vast rock at Stone Mountain Park. The governor, who initially approved the idea for

the memorial, said Monday he wants to hear more debate over the idea before making up his mind. “I thought it was a unique idea. But like any good idea, unless you have people to buy into it, what may be a good idea may not prove to be so good after all,” Deal said in his first comments about the proposal to the AJC.
“I think we’re seeing a discussion, a debate perhaps even, within the African-American community as to what their position on that is. And I think that’s a healthy discussion.” The King monument, however, would have been located not far from the spot where Ku Klux Klansmen once burned huge crosses, the fire licking the nighttime sky in a show of intimidation to the black residents of segregated Atlanta. And it would be located just beyond the famous giant carving of three Confederate heroes — Robert E. Lee, Jefferson Davis and Stonewall Jackson. To propose an MLK memorial in proximity to anything associated with the Confederacy would be
tantamount to blasphemy, to those on both sides of the issue. “The proposal to include Dr. King (on Stone Mountain) is simply to confuse black folk about the issues. It’s an attempt to gain support from blacks to keep these racist and demeaning symbols,” said John Evans, president of the DeKalb County branch of the NAACP. Civil rights leaders met privately with the governor to express their opposition to the plan and to press for the removal of the Confederate heroes engraved on Stone Mountain. They said that Deal was receptive but lacked the unilateral authority. “At this particular time, we don’t think he (Deal) has the power himself, but he has the influence,” stated Charles Steele, Southern Christian Leadership Conference president, according to the Atlanta Journal Constitution Stone Mountain became a memorial to the Confederacy by state law. A hot debate over the future of Stone Mountain resurfaced when Dylann Roof gunned down nine black worshippers in a Charleston, S.C., church last July. But the Georgia General Assembly must pass legislation to remove the carving. Meanwhile, the Georgia chapter of the Sons of Confederate Veterans also objects to a King monument on Stone Mountain. The organization said that move “could warrant legal action.” These defenders of the Confederacy said it would be like flying a Confederate battle flag at the King Center. To capitulate and acquiesce to public pressure, the Stone Mountain Memorial Association, armed with the power to operate the Stone Mountain Park by the state, announced that it would begin plans to build a King monument atop Stone Mountain. It would most likely be a “Freedom Bell,” a tower holding a replica of the Liberty Bell, based on a line in King’s 1963 “I Have a Dream” speech: “Let freedom ring from the Stone Mountain of Georgia.” But the SCLC and NAACP agreement with the Sons of Confederate Veterans means nothing to two former civil rights heroes-turned-legislators, both of whom believe Dr. King should be honored at Stone Mountain. Andrew Young, former two-time Atlanta mayor and U.S. Ambassador, says he wants a monument on the mountain and really doesn’t care that the SCLC and the NAACP are adamantly against the idea. “My understanding of Dr. King’s nonviolence movement was to create a reconciliation of races and opinions,” Young said. “I think it is a wonderful symbolism to have a Freedom Bell on Stone Mountain that would honor Dr. King. It is not only a good idea, it is a necessary idea for this nation to pull together.” U.S. reepresentative John Lewis (D-Ga.) shares Young’s sentiments about King being honored on the state’s most visited attraction. “The mountain belonged to the people of this state and to the people of this nation,” said Lewis. “So why not?” “How can you incorporate Dr. King’s philosophy in a statuette there at Stone Mountain in terms of what the history of the confederacy represents?” asked Steele. “We have no objections whatsoever to people honoring Martin Luther King. We just don’t think that’s the appropriate place to do it,” said Daniel Coleman, spokesperson for the Georgia division of the Sons of Confederate Veterans. Lewis thinks otherwise. “It’s my hope and my prayer that the people in this state and this community can come together and make a decision and honor Dr. King the way that he should be.”

Black and Hispanic newspaper publishers Black teen detained by police officers form national advertising task force for making customer “uncomfortable” By Atlanta Daily World Staff The National Newspaper Publishers Association and the National Association of Hispanic Publishers have announced the formation of a National Advertising Task Force to educate marketers on the benefits and importance of the African American and Hispanic newspaper market. This is the first time the NNPA and NAHP have joined forces for such an effort. The two organizations will be joined in the effort by Refuel Agency, a nationally recognized firm in youth, military and multicultural marketing and media placement. The NNPA, the trade association of the more than 200 African American-owned community newspapers along with the NAHP, a non-partisan trade advocacy organization representing the nation’s leading Spanish language publications, have a combined total reach of over 43 million readers per week. The task force will be in charge of increasing awareness and advertising for member newspapers and will be meeting with major auto, financial and political advertisers in the coming months. “With close to 97 million African Americans and Hispanics in the U.S. today, representing 33 percent of the total population, this consumer segment demands attention,” said Martha Montoya, VP of the
NAHP. “The buying power of the African American and Hispanic communities, currently at over $2.3 trillion combined, continues to outpace the national average.” “This historic media alliance is a gigantic step for our two organizations,” said Dr. Benjamin Chavis, President and CEO of the NNPA. “We believe our working together has tremendous potential mutual benefits in today’s marketplace.” “This task force also marks a historic partnership between the NNPA and NAHP, the nation’s most influential publishing organizations that are currently led by women. Martha and I have a shared vision and commitment to empower our communities by strengthening the voices of the media we serve,” said NNPA Chair Denise Rolark Barnes. Refuel Agency will continue to assist both the NNPA and NAHP with print advertising duties. “We are thrilled to be a part of this initiative to bring one united voice to this very important mission. With African American and Hispanic populations continuing to surge, it is the perfect time to promote the importance of reaching these communities,” said Derek White, President and CEO of Refuel Agency. A Black teenager from the D.C. area inspired protests after a recording showed him being brutally detained by police officers for making a White customer at a local bank feel “uncomfortable.” The incident happened Monday evening when Jason Goolsby, an 18-year-old student at the University of the District of Columbia, was contemplating taking money out of his account at a local Citibank, according to The Washington Post. The teen was at the vestibule ATM with a friend, Mike Brown, when he found out his scheduled studio session was canceled, leaving him to think twice about the withdrawal. While at the vestibule, Goolsby held the door open for a White woman with a stroller before leaving. The teens say what happened next shocked them. While walking away from the bank, a police car quickly approached and Goolsby took off. He was caught three blocks later and forced to the ground by two White police officers. In the video recorded by Brown, Goolsby is roughly handled by the officers
while another tells Brown to stay back. The Washington Post reports: According to police, the 911 caller said that the men who she thought may have been targeting ATM users were wearing backpacks and had “flat-top bush hairstyles.” Goolsby said he was wearing a backpack and bright blue headphones. After the officers discovered the teens were not a threat, they were sent on their way. A police report later revealed Goolsby was stopped because said 911 caller claimed the teens made them feel uncomfortable; he/she believed they were targeting ATM users at the bank. Authorities did not publicly identify the 911 caller, but Goolsby said the officers told him it was the White woman from the bank. He said he never exchanged words with the woman for whom he previously held the door. In less than 24 hours, the video of Goolsby’s detainment went viral, prompting members of the Black Lives Matter movement to protest on Pennsylvania Avenue on Capitol Hill. Several persons took to social media to express their frustration. To view the comments and read this article in its entirety, visit www.AtlantaDailyWorld.com

Cricket Wireless offers safety tips to make Halloween safe and fun for the whole family By Atlanta Daily World Staff Halloween’s around the corner, and that can only mean one thing: costumes, carvings and handfuls of candy! But with every bit of trick-or-treat fun, we must remember to keep safety first. Many parents have given their children cell phones to stay connected in case of an emergency. It’s a good time for parents to talk with their trick-or-treaters about safety. Teach them useful safety features on their devices in case of emergency. Below are some tips and apps to make Halloween safe and fun for the whole family. 1. Use your cellphone as a flashlight Keeping your trick-or-treaters safe as darkness falls is equally as important as ensuring Halloween fun for all. Free flashlight applications (apps) for iPhone and Android devices use the LED light on smartphones and fill your screen with bright white light to illuminate the dark. Some even include fully customizable special effects including Strobe Light, Trippy, S.O.S., Yin-Yang, Halloween, Candy Hearts, Holiday Lights and more! 2. Keep track of your children while they’re on the go A parent or responsible adult should always accompany young children trick-or-treating. Older children should go in groups and agree on a time when they should return home. For extra safety precaution, parents can track their children via the Life360 or GPS Phone Tracker Pro apps, which allows family members to alert one another when they’ve arrived at a destination, follow each other’s movements with minute-by-
minute updates and real-time check-ins. 3. Mobile Device Tips Pre-program one-touch dial emergency phone numbers in your child’s device in case of emergency. These numbers should include parents, 911, grandparents, trusted friend or neighbor. Inform them not to respond or send personal information to numbers they don’t recognize. If your child’s cell phone has access to the internet, find out if your service provider offers some sort of parental control feature to which you can subscribe. Now that cellphone safety tips have been laid out for your children and tweens, below are a few additional safety measures parents should keep top of mind for a fun and safe trick-ortreating experience:

Burn 1,000 calories without realizing it By Britta Lee When it comes to working out, many will say they enjoy it most when it doesn’t feel like work. The important thing is, how hard you’re working out vs. how hard you think you’re working out are two different concepts. That fact can work to your advantage. Namely, since your perceived exertion might be more in your head than in your muscles. After all, the nickname for the treadmill is the “dreadmill”, so people forgo their workouts when they run out of music to listen to. In 2012, a review published by the International Revue of Sport and Exercise Psychology found that listening to upbeat music trains people’s mind into thinking they’re working less, hence they end up putting in more effort for a longer period of time. In short, it’s best to play around with your perceived exertion, because lowering it will likely cause you to work out harder, longer, and without paying attention to how much you sweat. Have fun while you’re exercising, and you’re more than likely to stick it out. You might ask yourself, how else can I lower my perceived exertion? Try getting creative if you’re a runner. A 2014 New York University study found that when racers fixated their eyes on a target straight in front of them, they perceived the finish line to be closer, and this made their trek easier. Those same individuals also finished the race 23 percent faster. Another somewhat hilarious study conducted by the UK’s Northumbria University found that when guys work out in the presence of a female onlooker, their perceived exertion drops. The opposite, however, tends to happen when that onlooker is a male. Hence, it might not be the worst idea to make your significant other your workout buddy. Essentially, one of the simplest ways to torch the lbs (or at least inches) is to do something you enjoy. Here’s a list of activities that can burn as many as 1,000 calories quickly, and before you realize it: Dancing Nothing gets your heart pumping like an effective dance workout. In fact, a variety programs like Zumba have become the go-to activities for those who want to get in shape, shake their bodies, and have a little fun.

Basketball Basketball requires fast, intense movement. You may find yourself running intervals for hours. Simultaneously, quick directional changes work your abductors and adductors (a benefit that is usually missed at the gym). This sport also improves your overall coordination. Biking Biking in the elements, specifically “mountain biking” forces you to work your glutes, quads, core, and back harder than you ever will on a stationary bike. Besides, the scenery is usually much more interesting and exciting. Football It’s one of the most intense sports that hones your speed and agility, and requires quick bursts of energy and explosive movements that burn calories and build muscle. Don’t just watch it this season, get in the game. Swimming Swimming has all around benefits, and can be enjoyed in different ways. Swimming burns a ton of calories by keeping your body temperature at a level that requires a great deal of energy. Diving, sometimes called “the lazy man’s sport” can burn as many calories as jogging. Doing a beach dive can be even more effective because you burn calories walking down to the beach, while carrying equipment.

Seven health-related reasons you should eat pumpkin this fall By Britta Lee With Halloween just around the corner, most of us can think of several creative uses for our beloved pumpkins. Whether it be hollowing them out to make Jack-OLanterns, mixing them into tasty pies, or simply using them to decorate or spice up flavorful treats, pumpkins represent a wealth of fun during the fall season. But, did you know that pumpkins offer a wealth of health benefits? In honor of autumn, here is a list of the benefits these brightly colored vegetables offer, according to a series of health experts who recently spoke to MSN.com. 1. They’re high in fiber and low in calories. Anything high in fiber and low in calories is good. You feel full longer, curb cravings, keep your calories down, and maintain or lose weight. Pumpkins do just that. “Pumpkin has 3 grams of fiber and only 50 calories per 1 cup,” says White. “A high fiber diet is essential to a healthy diet and often helps us feel full longer by slowing digestion.” 2. They contain the antioxidant Beta-Carotene. Beta-carotene not only gives pumpkins their bright color, it’s also “a powerful antioxidant that, according to the National Cancer Institute, has a role in fighting cancer,” states White. Your body is full of free radicals, which damage cells and may play a role in the development of cancer. That’s bad. “Pumpkin is full of antioxidants that are great at fighting free radicals,” says White. That’s good. 3. They keep your skin young and eyes sharp. Unless you’re the lucky one who is 35 and still getting carded at bars, you’re probably trying to delay aging. Beta-carotene can help. “Beta-carotene has been proven to improve a person’s skin and decrease wrinkles,” says White. “It’s also
converted to vitamin A in the body. Vitamin A is essential for healthy vision. 1 cup of pumpkin contains 200 percent more vitamin A than the RDI (recommended dietary intake).” 4. They may contain anti-diabetic properties, and are great snack for diabetics. Snacking can be difficult when you’re diabetic, but pumpkins are definitely a go-to. That’s because they have been found to raise insulin levels and lower blood glucose levels to non-diabetic levels. 5. The seeds are healthy, too. “Pumpkin seeds are high in vitamin A, vitamin B (including thiamin, riboflavin), vitamin C, vitamin K, niacin, calcium, iron, phosphorus, and protein,” White states. “They are also high in magnesium, manganese, zinc, potassium, and copper,” and poly and mono unsaturated fats. Toss them with your favorite spices and roast them in the oven, and you’ve got yourself a healthy, delicious snack. 6. They lower your bad cholesterol. There’s good and bad cholesterol. Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) is the bad stuff. A chemical called phytosterol lowers LDL levels. Pumpkin seeds have phytosterol. Translation: eat pumpkin seeds, lower your cholesterol. 7. They help you sleep and make you happy. Pumpkin seeds also contain
tryptophan, which is needed to make serotonin. Serotonin not only makes you happy, but also helps make melatonin, which regulates your sleep and wake cycles. A solid night’s rest followed by a happy morning? Sounds good to us.
Do you really ‘need’ a Mammogram? By Britta Lee As Breast Cancer Awareness month comes a close, it’s only fitting to discuss the necessity of a mammogram. When women think of getting that “check up”, it rarely comes to mind that doing so could result in regret. However, growing research shows that more mammograms don’t always save more lives, but can instead have less than desirable consequences. Many women have come forward admitting they wish they’d never undergone the rest. A major reason is that not everything treated by a “mammo” is a direct threat to a woman’s life. Research is beginning to show that some would be completely fine even if doctors left those so-called suspicious spots alone. Small, slow-growing abnormalities may never become a health problem. In this case, when treated (especially as cancer), doing so is “overdiagnosis”. MSN.com reports that while questionable cells may enter certain areas of breast tissue, that doesn’t guarantee they evolve to cause harm. This is essentially what many physicians refer to as “Stage O”. Currently, there exists no way to predict whether or not these cells will become cancer. However, most doctors take the “better safe than sorry” approach. This can sometimes be to a woman’s detriment, given that some have underwent profound over treatment-including lumpectomies, mastectomies, and radiation-- when they could have remained healthy without such intervention. Additional research also shows that in some cases, women have been correctly diagnosed yet went on to lead long, healthy productive
Atlanta Daily World
Get Connected, Stay Informed lives without extreme forms of treatment. While it is vital that women remain proactive about their health and get routine “check ups”, one must consider the lifelong implications of improper diagnosis. Some might argue simply listening to your body, and consulting a physician when you anticipate a serious problem. Others say to keep checking up at all times, and on the regular. Beware, however, of overthinking what could be health paranoia. In short, what you don’t know doesn’t always hurt you.

Six worst Halloween candies and healthier replacements By Britta Lee It’s one of the few times of the year that many of us happily gorge on less than healthy treats. After all, who doesn’t love a a great big pumpkin full of all sorts of the candy? It seems they’re everywhere, from overthe-top advertisements in our favorite stores to simply sitting on our co-workers’ desks. However, some of those treats are the worst things you can put in your body. The good news, there are healthier replacements that aren’t nearly as bad. At the end of the day, there’s nothing “wrong” with having a few of them every once in a while. Tara Zamani, M.S., C.N.S., a clinical nutritionist with Content Checked recently spoke with MSN.com to explain why certain treats are virtually a “no no”; yet, gave their healthier alternatives. Here’s the list of what Zamani came up with: Worst: Reeses Peanut Butter Cup Given their non-organic, GMO peanuts, refined sugar, and perservatives, these candies get a “thumbs down”. In fact, just one package 13 grams of fat and 21 grams of sugar. Zamani reports that eating these on a regular basis can
especially put kids at risk of being overweight or developing Diabetes. Alternative: Justin’s Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter Cup “Justin’s creamy, chocolate peanut butter cups are gluten-free and made with organic ingredients,” Zamani said. “These treats are a much healthier version of the traditional Reese’s Peanut Butter cups as the peanuts in these are organic, non- GMO and there are no preservatives or trans fats.” Worst: Pumpkin Oreo Cookies “This treat is highly processed as it contains enriched wheat flour, artificial colors and flavors, synthetic vitamins, high-fructose corn syrup, and loads of sugar — 12 grams for two cookies,” Zamani said. “Nowhere in the ingredient list does it list pumpkin. A combination of these ingredients can lead to an unbalanced blood sugar and indigestion, as our bodies have difficulty absorbing synthetic vitamins.” Alternative: Nikki’s Halloween Candies “These Halloween cookies are made of unbleached wheat flour, organic sugar and natural flavors,” Zamani said. Plus, they have no preservatives or artificial colors or

flavors, which Zamani said makes them a healthier choice compared to Oreos. Worst: Candy Corn “This candy mainly consists of sugar in the form of high-fructose corn syrup — the most refined type of sugar that is also genetically modified,” Zamani said. Not to mention, it’s made with artificial flavors and colors, which Zamani explained are especially problematic ingredients for kids with ADD, asthma and allergies. Alternative: Surf Sweets Organic Fruity Treats “These are a great alternative to candy corn as these candies are sweetened with organic tapioca syrup, grape juice and organic cane sugar, and colored with turmeric, black carrot juice and annatto,” Zamani said. “Natural colors and flavors may not cause the side effects that artificial colors and flavors do, like head or stomach aches.” Worst: Skittles These rainbow-colored candies are made with high-fructose corn syrup, more refined sugar, hydrogenated palm oil, and artificial colors and flavors, all of which Zamani definitely doesn’t approve of. She noted that some of these ingredients may be linked to hyperactivity, food allergies and even cancer. Alternative: Annie’s Organic Fruit Snacks “These are free of artificial flavors, colors, preservatives and high-fructose corn syrup and are made with organic natural sweeteners and organic sunflower oil,” Zamani said. “Annie’s fruit snacks are a good alternative to traditional Skittles for satisfying that ‘taste of the rainbow’ craving.” Worst: Tootsie Rolls and Tootsie Pops Because they are sticky and waxy, Zamani said these candies are some of the worst for your teeth. Plus, she also mentioned that they’re made of not-so-nutritious ingredients like hydrogenated soybean oil and artificial flavors and colors. Additionally, just six small Tootsie Roll pieces can contain about 20 grams of sugar. That’s pretty close to the amount that the American Heart Association says women should limit their intake to for just one day. Alternative: YumEarth Organic Lollipops “These lollipops are vegan, free of all allergens including gluten, free of highfructose corn syrup, and free of artificial colors and flavors,” Zamani said. Plus, she pointed out, they’re made with all organic ingredients and real fruit extracts.”
“ These processed fruit chews are full of artificial flavors and colors, trans fats, sugar, and are the worst candy for promoting tooth cavities and decay as each packet of 10 contains 22 grams of sugar,” Zamani said. On top of that, Zamani added, Starburst can increase acidity in the mouth, which could break down tooth enamel. Alternative: TruJoy Organic Fruit Chews “These chews are made with all organic ingredients, natural flavors and colors, and don’t contain any high-fructose corn syrup, preservatives, synthetic vitamins or hydrogenated oils,” Zamani said. “Plus, they are also gluten-free.”
Worst: StarBurst “These processed fruit chews are full of artificial flavors and colors, trans fats, sugar, and are the worst candy for promoting tooth cavities and decay, as each packet of 10 contains 22 grams of sugar,” Zamani said.

Does Bill Cosby shatter the Huxtables? By Britta Lee The newest cover of Ebony magazine is ruffling a few feathers. The November 2015 issue tackles challenges that the black family deals with. Interestingly, the magazine chose to put a shattered portrait of the “Huxtables” on the cover. It’s a broken photo with Bill Cosby’s face at the center of the most damaged portion. The editing of the photo definitely has some up in arms, while others are singing its praises. The bottom line, what Bill Cosby did in his personal live should not tarnish the legacy of the “Cosby Show”. It is an iconic piece of history that helped revolutionize the perception of the black family. The Huxtables represented a positive light during the Reagan era, and promoted hope despite the plague of crack cocaine during the 80s. What we must accept is that, regardless of an individual’s personal struggles, you cannot strip him or her of the good they have done. Take for example, other shows like “A Different World” and “Fat Albert”. Their episodes taught valuable lessons, represented blacks in a positive light, and offered something to the world that is
eerily void in our current day and time. Granted, Bill Cosby may deserve whatever negative attention he gets due to his questionable activities in the past. However, shattering a picture that also includes Phylicia Rashad, Lisa Bonet, Malcolm-Jamal Warner, Tempestt Bledsoe and Keshia Knight Pulliam is not justifiable on the basis of one person’s actions. It is not debatable that the black family has its challenges, but tarnishing the image of one that represented the essence of positivity is distasteful. What do you think of the Ebony magazine cover? Tyra Banks hints at ending ‘America’s Next Top Model’
By Britta Lee Fans of “America’s Next Top Model” might not be happy to find that the most recent season will more than likely be its last. If you’re still dreaming of making it big on Tyra Banks’ model competition show, it might be too late. The show’s creator recently announced that Cycle 22 of ANTM will most likely be the last and final season. The supermodel and co-host of FABLife recently took to twitter to announce the news. She stated: “TYRA MAIL! Thinking #ANTM22 should be our last cycle. I truly believe it’s time. May your pics be forever fierce. Keep on Smizing!” It’s been a 12-year ride that has introduced to the world such top models as Eva Marcille, Yaya Dacosta, and still sent girls home who were “not ready” for the industry at the time, but have gone on to have somewhat successful

Fox panicking as ‘Empire’ ratings continue to fall
By Terry Shropshire Fox execs are sweating in their loafers after “Empire” TV ratings lost another million viewers this past week. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the hip hop soap opera lost another 1 million viewers on Wednesday night. “Though the series still easily won Wednesday night, in both the key demo and total viewers, it slid another half of a point among adults 18-49 for an average 4.6 rating,” the publication wrote. “The Fox drama also averaged 12.2 million viewers. Empire has seen its time-shifting take rise with each
same-day fall since the lofty premiere, so it’s becoming apparent that it currently isn’t nabbing the appointment viewing status that it had during its freshman season. Insiders are stating that Fox Network execs are ignoring the live viewer ratings and focusing instead on the artificially inflated DVR ratings. Remember, “Power” star 50 Cent blamed “Empire” ratings dip on “too much gay stuff.” Others are blaming Lee Daniels for the loss of three million viewers since its premiere because he’s way overdoing it on the celebrity guest appearances, robbing the show of its believability, credibility and authenticity.
modeling careers. The finale show will allegedly air on November 13th. CW President Mark Pedowitz released a statement following Tyra’s announcement saying, “America’s Next Top Model was a successful franchise for two networks, first at UPN and then The CW, and it became not just a ratings hit, but a global pop culture phenomenon. I want to thank Tyra and Ken for all their years of success in establishing a show that was not just popular in the U.S., but all across the world.” The successful, long-running show has produced familiar faces by giving them the opportunity to shine in an industry they otherwise may have never known or experienced. However, all good things must eventually come to an end.Unfortunately, this may be the last go-round for the show. Yet, that is not to take away from the fact that it carved a niche in reality television that no other can rival.

GUEST COMMENTARY
GUEST COMMENTARY

by Benjamin F. Chavis, Jr.
The gun lobby can be defeated Each Monday in Chicago, we gird ourselves for the most recent score. Not on how well the Bears, Bulls or Blackhawks, Cubs or White Sox have fared, but on how many new victims of guns have been racked up. This weekend, three were killed with 17 other shooting victims, according to CBS News. Victims of gun shootings are spiking in Chicago and in cities across the country. From 2014 to 2015 to date, the murder rate in Milwaukee is up 76 percent. In St. Louis it’s up 60 percent, in Baltimore up 56 percent, and in the nation’s capital up 44 percent. Chicago is up “only” 20 percent, but the numbers are staggering — from 244 to 294 to date. Someone in Chicago has been shot every 2.84 hours this year, a total of 2,349 shootings from January 1 to October 6, according to the Chicago Tribune tally. Over five years, Chicago police report 12,814 shootings and 2,583 murders, according to a chart provided me by the Chicago Police Department. We lost nearly as many people in Chicago alone as we lost on 9/11. This violence also terrorizes. Nearly nine of 10 murders (89 percent) are from gunshots. Eight of 10 victims are African-American males. The guns are not made in Chicago. The Chicago police recover about 7,000 illegal guns annual, more than any other city. What we have here is a national security emergency. There is national mourning for the victims of the mass killing at Umpqua Community College in Oregon. But Chicago is experiencing an Umpqua almost every week. Too many illegal guns are in circulation, from handguns to military assault rifles. These guns are powerful enough not only to shoot up churches and schools but to bring down airplanes. Too many legal guns are in the wrong hands. Too many young men use guns rather than reason to settle disputes, bullets rather than accomplishment to establish their manhood. President Obama has spoken out forcefully against gun violence, but his proposed reforms
Black and Latinos working together
have been dead on arrival in the Congress, unable even to come to a vote. His most recent comments have despaired that yet another slaughter brings no action. It is time to increase both the heat and the light. President Obama should convene a White House Conference on Gun Violence. That commission should detail reforms needed to begin to address the epidemic of gun violence, and call the nation to action. The reforms can’t be limited to closing gun show loopholes or other gun law reforms. The Department of Homeland Security should be there, detailing the threat posed by the spread of guns designed for the military, not for hunters. We need to crack down on illegal gun ownership, with harsh penalties for repeat offenders. We should be jailing those who traffic in illegal guns, while reducing sentences for nonviolence drug offenders. There should be a push to revive the ban on assault weapons once more. It is ridiculous that weapons designed for war are spread across American streets. But the murder spike represents more than simply too many guns. The violence stems from the growing misery of too few jobs, too many guns and too little hope. Any sensible plan against the spike in murders and shootings will include jobs for the young, increases in the minimum wage, guaranteed paid family leave days and more. The culture of drugs and guns has to be challenged with an economy of jobs and opportunity. The Black Lives Matter movement has raised awareness of the violence in our cities, focusing on the horror of African-Americans threatened by the very police who are charged with protecting them. But the spike of murders and shootings comes not from the actions of the police but from the actions of residents. Citizens in many cities want a crackdown on the trafficking and carrying of guns. But many cities find themselves preempted by state legislatures. blocked and sabotaged again and again. No civilized country can allow this level of violence to continue without mobilizing in response.
If there was ever a propitious time for African Americans and Latino Americans to unite to advance the cause of freedom, justice, equality and economic empowerment, it is now. Today, more than ever, the rapidly changing national demographics and the potential political and economic power as a direct result of Latino and black unity in America cannot be overstated. In a recent column to the New York Amsterdam News, Bronx Borough President Rueben Diaz Jr. stated, “As we face heated, dangerous rhetoric on the issues that concern us the most, the Hispanic community must not only stand together but to also unite with our allies of different backgrounds, such as the African-American community, to fight for the betterment of our communities.” I know Borough President Diaz and I believe that one day he may become the first Latino mayor of New York City. Fighting to improve the quality of life in our communities is exactly what our long mutual struggles for justice and empowerment continues to be about. The two largest people of color groups in America are Latinos and Blacks. And if blacks and Latinos unite in New York and elsewhere, it will achieve more effective political and economic results. President Barack H. Obama issued a proclamation in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month stating, “America’s Hispanic community has woven unique threads into the diverse fabric of our country and played an important role in shaping our national character as a people of limitless possibility.” We are witnessing a political challenge to the nation’s diversity with the exponential increase in residents of people of color in every region of the country. Some studies show that the racial-disparity divide in America is becoming more and more pronounced in housing, education, business, immigration, and mass incarceration. Going forward will require a serious effort to ensure a massive voter turnout of Latinos and blacks in the 2016 elections. Neither the Black nor Latino vote can be taken for granted. The political future of the U.S. will swing in the
balance and scale of how Get-Out-The-Vote (GOTV) efforts will be financed, advertised, staffed and mobilized. Neither elected officials nor Corporate America can effectively reach the Black and Brown communities by ignoring their media outlets. A promising sign of increased unity between the two powerhouse groups is that the National Association of Hispanic Publishers (NAHP) and the National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA) have announced the establishment of a NNPA-NAHP National Advertising Task Force. The purpose of the coalition is to educate marketers on the benefits and importance of the African American and Hispanic newspaper markets. “With close to 97 million African Americans and Hispanics in the U.S. today, representing 33 percent of the total population, this consumer segment demands attention,” said Martha Montoya, vice president of the NAHP. “The buying power of the African American and Hispanic communities, currently at over $2.3 trillion combined, continues to outpace the national average.” NNPA Chair Denise Rolark Barnes said, “This task force also marks a historic partnership between the NNPA and NAHP, the nation’s most influential publishing organizations that are currently led by women. Martha and I have a shared vision and commitment to empower our communities by strengthening the voices of the media we serve.” The potential force of African Americans and Latinos working together in business, politics, education, housing, family and community development are enormous. The challenge will be to achieve and maintain this unity not just for one year or two, but for a lifetime of solidarity and action to represent and defend the interests of our communities respectively. Benjamin F. Chavis, Jr. is president and CEO of the National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA).
