A call to all Black men and youth ‘Day of Solidarity’ occurs, Oct. 17, at Community Empowerment Association by Rob Taylor Jr. Courier Staff Writer

You can find hundreds of Black men in Pittsburgh together at one time, but usually, it's "at the football games, or the bars," said Rashad Byrdsong, founder of the Community Empowerment Association in Homewood. But he said it's time for hundreds of Black men— and Black male teens—to come together for another cause, a more important cause—a show of solidarity. On Saturday, Oct. 17, 2026, Byrdsong is hosting his second "Day of Black Male Solidarity," at the CEA headquarters, 7120 Kelly St., Homewood. A free continental breakfast will be served at 9 a.m., followed by the seminars and activities at 10 a.m. The event will end around 4 p.m. Byrdsong is encouraging all Black men to attend the event, to learn, to fellowship, to show that a community is stronger when Black men are committed to working together for the greater good. Byrdsong's first "Day of
Black Male Solidarity" occurred in 2007, when some 700 Black men and teens marched from Freedom Corner in the Hill District to Downtown, where a rally was then held. On Oct. 17, there will not be a march, but the message is still the same. "The challenge is, most of us (Black men) are working in our own silos," Byrdsong told the New Pittsburgh Courier, Sept. 29. "It's a matter of connecting those silos together so we can see the work that a lot of brothers are doing in the city." Byrdsong said another reason for the Day of Solidarity is that "Black men will be connected with young Black boys, giving them a broader support system. The various Black men who come together, each of them have a different story, each of them have been successful in their own right, and we want to put a lot of these young brothers on that same track." With no doubt, there are more alliances between Black women-led organizations in the Pittsburgh
region than Black menled organizations. That's good for the Black women, Byrdsong said, but it's time for more Black men to come together as well. "We have to begin to develop support systems for Black men, emotionally, psychologically and physically," he said. Byrdsong said it's important to note that there are Black men doing extraordinary things in Pittsburgh. In addition to the Courier's "Men of Excellence" awards ceremony that highlights 50 Black men in Pittsburgh each year, there are those like Bill Generett Jr., who was recently named President and CEO of the esteemed Pittsburgh Foundation. Then there's people like Richard Taylor, president of the Eden Hall Foundation; Mark Lewis, CEO of the Poise Foundation; Dr. Wayne Walters, Superintendent of Pittsburgh Public Schools; Dr. Quintin Bullock, President of Community College of Allegheny County; and many others in promSEE SOLIDARITY A5
Many Black women in favor of proposed paid parental leave legislation It's now in the hands of Allegheny County Council by Renee P. Aldrich For New Pittsburgh Courier
A broad coalition of advocates, including elected leaders and community members and led by the organization Pittsburgh United, have been calling for the passing of paid parental leave legislation for new mothers in Allegheny County to address the infant and maternal health crisis and to ensure kids and parents can thrive. Studies and data introduced at a Sept. 1, 2026, meeting at the Jeron X. Grayson Center in the Hill District said that paid parental leave not only reduces infant and maternal deaths, but also improves mental and physical health for new parents and children. Additionally, according to Pittsburgh United, paid parental leave gives families the opportunity to start strong in life—
parents having the time to heal and bond with their baby, plus adjust to life with a new human without the added stress, pressure and financial burden of unpaid time off from work. The panel, moderated by Desmond Hargrove, was comprised of Iyanna Bridges, a professional doula; Dontae Comans, Mayor of Wilkinsburg and a father who benefited from paid parental leave after his wife, Ashley Comans, recently gave birth; and Ebony Fowler. Bridges was asked, "What does the absence of paid parental leave look like within families and what choices are families forced to have to make without it?" Bridges' response was: "(The absence of paid parental leave) looks like delayed healing, physically and emotionally. It looks

Passing for White, fighting for Black America: The courage of Walter White by Tamara Shiloh Oakland Post
Walter Francis White was one of the most important civil rights leaders of the first half of the 20th century. For more than three decades, he helped transform the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) into one of the nation’s most powerful organizations fighting racial discrimination, segregation, and violence against African Americans. Walter White was born in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1893 and grew up in a middle-class African American family. His parents, George and Madeline White, had been born into slavery. Although Walter had blond hair, blue eyes, very light skin and could easily have passed as white, he firmly identified as Black. As a teenager, he witnessed the Atlanta Race Massacre of 1906, when White mobs attacked African Americans throughout the city. The experience strengthened his determination to fight racial hatred and injustice. After graduating from Atlanta University in 1916, White worked in insurance and became active in the Atlanta branch of the NAACP. His abili-
ties caught the attention of NAACP leader James Weldon Johnson, who recruited him to the organization’s national staff in 1918. He soon became known for his extraordinarily dangerous investigations of lynchings. Because many White Southerners assumed he was White, he was able to enter communities where Black investigators would have faced immediate danger. He spoke with witnesses, law enforcement officials, and even members of lynch mobs, often pretending to share their racial attitudes so they would reveal information. White personally investigated 41 lynchings and eight race riots. On several occasions, his identity was discovered, forcing him to flee for his life. The evidence he collected helped the NAACP expose the brutality of lynching to Americans and strengthen its campaign for federal anti-lynching legislation. His experiences also influenced his 1929 book, “Rope and Faggot: A Biography of Judge Lynch.” By the early 1930s, Walter had risen to the NAACP’s top administrative position. As executive secretary, he helped build the organization into a major national political and legal force. Under his
leadership, the NAACP challenged discrimination in voting, employment, education, transportation, the military, and other areas of American life. White also recruited attorney Charles Hamilton Houston to lead the NAACP’s legal strategy. Houston and his protégé, Thurgood Marshall, developed the courtroom campaign that eventually helped produce the Supreme Court’s historic 1954 decision in Brown v. Board of Education, declaring racial segregation in public schools unconstitutional. White used his relationships with national political leaders as another weapon against discrimination. He worked with First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt, President Franklin D. Roosevelt, and President Harry S. Truman. He supported efforts to end employment discrimination and encouraged Truman to establish the President’s Committee on Civil Rights. Walter White remained an NAACP leader until his death in 1955. His courage, political skill, investigative work, and relentless commitment to equality helped establish the foundation upon which the modern Civil Rights Movement would build.

personality Ed Gordon shared a tribute to Stribling on social media, calling his former colleague “a sweet soul.” She hosted BET’s entertainment news show Screen Scene in the 1990s and pioneered the network’s jazz coverage by hosting Jazz Central and other programs.
1841—Fannie M. Richards is born. She becomes one of the nation’s early civil rights advocates as well as a prominent educator. 1868—John Mercer Langston (1829-1897) organizes the nation’s first Black law school at Howard University in Washington, D.C. Largely forgotten today, Langston was a major Black political figure during his day. He was one of the nation’s first African American lawyers, elected political officials and he influenced Black education throughout the country. The town of Langston, Okla., is named in his honor. 1872—Morgan State College is founded in Maryland. 1937—The NAACP awards the prestigious Spingarn Medal to Walter White for his work against lynching. The light complexioned White had “passed for White” to gather evidence against terrorist organizations such as the Ku Klux Klan. 1960—Africa’s most populous nation-Nigeria-declares its independence from colonial rule. 1966—The militant Black Panther Party is founded in Oakland, Calif., by Huey Newton and Bobby Seale.
• OCTOBER 2
1800—Nat Turner is born on this day in South Hampton, Va. The spiritually inspired Turner would organize and carry out one of the deadliest slave revolts in American history. His rebellion led to the deaths of 57 Whites including men, women and children. 1937—Famed attorney Johnnie Cochran is born on this day in Shreveport, La. He was the lead-attorney in the 1995 murder trial which resulted in the not guilty verdict for football legend O.J. Simpson. In addition to Simpson, Cochran was involved in several other high profile cases. He died on March 29, 2005 at the age of 67. 1967—Thurgood Marshall is sworn in as the first Black justice on the United States Supreme Court. President Lyndon Johnson had nominated him in part because of his distinguished career in the NAACP fighting to desegregate American institutions. Marshall had been the lead attorney in the historic Brown v. Board of Education case which led to the desegregation of the nation’s schools. 1986—The U.S. Senate imposes economic sanctions on the then White minority government in South Africa. The sanctions were imposed only after the Senate overrode a veto of the measure by President Ronald Reagan. Reagan had angered Blacks and progressive Whites by favoring a policy he referred to as “constructive engagement” with the racist South African regime. Black majority rule was not achieved in South Africa until 1994.
• OCTOBER 3
1856—Journalist and fiery advocate for Black rights T. Thomas Fortune is born in Marianna, Jackson County, Fla. He was an orator, journalist and militant civil rights advocate. He attended school at Howard University in Washington, D.C., but later moved to New York City where he founded the New York Age newspaper. Fortune died in Philadelphia at the age of 71 in 1928. 1935—The then-independent East African nation of Ethiopia is invaded by fascist Italy in an attempt to join other European nations which had used military force to establish colonies in Africa and exploit its economic resources. Blacks throughout the world rallied to Ethiopia’s defense, in part, because the nation was viewed by many as the place on Earth where human life began. The U.S. effort was led by
prominent Harlem, N.Y., minister Adam Clayton Powell Sr. 1949—One of the first Blackowned radio stations in America begins broadcasting in Atlanta, Ga. The principal organizing force behind WERD was businessman J.B. Blayton. professional 1995—Former football great O.J. Simpson is found not guilty of the murders of his ex-wife Nicole and her friend Ronald Goldman. The trial had been a national sensation. The verdict angered a majority of Whites. Polls showed that better than 80 percent of Whites surveyed felt Simpson got away with murder.
• OCTOBER 4
1864—What was to become the nation’s first Black daily newspaper began publishing on this day in New Orleans, La. Amazingly, the New Orleans Tribune began distribution while slavery still existed. It was founded by Dr. Louis C. Reudanez. It began as a tri-weekly but soon became a daily published in both French and English. 1969—Howard Lee and Charles Evers became the first Black mayors of Chapel Hill, N.C., and Fayette, Miss., respectively. Evers was the brother of civil rights legend Medgar Evers who was murdered by Ku Klux Klan member Byron De La Beckwith on June 12, 1963. 1988—The Martin Luther King Jr. federal building is dedicated in Atlanta, Ga. It thus became the first federal building to bear the name of the slain civil rights leader.
• OCTOBER 5
1867—The first Black mayor of any American city takes office. His name was Monroe Baker. The prominent businessman was appointed mayor of St. Martin, La., two years after the end of slavery.
• OCTOBER 6
1847—The first National Black Convention takes place in Troy, N.Y. There were more than 100 delegates in attendance from at least nine states. Top items on the agenda included determining ways to help end slavery and encouraging free Blacks to refuse to purchase products produced by slave labor. Frederick Douglass frequently makes note of the convention because one of its aims was to organize independent Black power and “not depend on Whites and hope” to free Blacks. 1871—The now world famous Fisk Jubilee Singers begin their first national tour. The tours helped raise funds for Nashville, Tenn.’s, predominately Black Fisk University as well as give the school an international reputation. 1917—Activist Fannie Lou Hamer is born in Montgomery County, Miss. She goes on to become one of the major female figures in the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s. Nevertheless, she remains one of the movement’s most effective unsung heroes. As to why she became involved in the movement for Black freedom, dignity and political rights, she would often say in reference to injustice, “I’m sick and tired of being sick and tired.” 1971—The first legal interracial marriage takes place in North Carolina. A Black man, John Wilkinson, marries a White woman, Lorraine Mary Turner. The marriage came a few years after the 1967 U.S. Supreme Court ruling in Loving v. Virginia, that ruled legal barriers to interracial marriage, which existed in most Southern states, were unconstitutional.

Many Black women in favor of proposed paid parental leave legislation It's now in the hands of Allegheny County Council PARENTAL LEAVE FROM A1
"Postpartum recovery and bonding looks like moms harming themselves and their children. It also looks like fathers experiencing a hormonal shift and imbalance and no one recognizing, along with stress being added to their plate, and they end up harming their wives, partners, children and themselves." Fowler added: "Postpartum looks like families asking a neighbor, a family friend or family member to watch their children and that child ending up being harmed because that individual was inadequate to watch children in the first place." The goal of the Sept. 1 event was three-fold; to make sure that all elements of the proposed legislation were made known; to stress that through voting, organizing and everyone playing their part in the process, these kinds of life-changing proposals can happen; and to encourage each individual to call Allegheny County Council and express their desire for this vote. One of the issues of concern to participants was the fact that County Councilman DeWitt Walton, who is Black, has not spoken publicly on whether or not he supports the proposed legislation. Two significant advocates of the proposed legislation are Allegheny County Executive Sara Innamorato and the Allegheny County Health Department board members. The health department said that between June 1-July 16, 2026, they received about 1,400 comments in favor of the proposed legislation. Innamorato, who is currently pregnant, has said that "I will be so disappointed in myself as the first county executive who will give birth in office to not be able to provide parental leave for other families who are struggling every day and just want that time to recover and to bond and to build their family." On Monday, Sept. 28, 2026, the Allegheny County Health Department's board members unanimously approved the revised proposed legislation of the paid parental leave policy, which now calls for employers with 15 or more eligible employees to provide up to 12 weeks of paid parental leave for employees. Those employees must

be full-time for at least six months at said job, or part-time for at least 625 hours. The revised proposed legislation now heads to the desk of the 15-member Allegheny County Council. It needs eight affirmative votes to pass, which would then by signed into law by the Allegheny County Executive, Innamorato. If it's passed, employers would have one year to get on board with the new policy, which is a change from the originally-proposed six months. It's unclear when Allegheny County Councilmembers will vote on the proposed policy. One person who definitely wants to see the paid parental leave policy pass is Ariel Mejia. She's a Ph.D. student in Africana studies at the University of Pittsburgh, whose focus is Black maternal health. She is mother to 2-yearold River. They both attended the Sept. 1 event sponsored by Pittsburgh United. "I'm for it because daycare prices nowadays are ridiculous, and the waitlists are ridiculous," Mejia, who just moved to Pittsburgh from the Detroit area (Southfield), told the Courier. "It would be nice for moms and dads to be able to get parental leave to spend more time with their children."

Pitt's Justice Scholars Institute marks 10 years
DR. ESOHE OSAI, FAR LEFT, WITH GRADUATES FROM PITT’S JUSTICE SCHOLARS INSTITUTE, SEPT. 10, 2026. OSAI IS FOUNDER AND DIRECTOR OF JSI.
On Sept. 10, 2026, the University of Pittsburgh Justice Scholars Institute (JSI) hosted a celebration at the Dollar Bank Rooftop Lounge to commemorate its 10th anniversary, marking a decade of dedicated service to students and families throughout the Pittsburgh region. Reaching this milestone reflects not only the strength and sustainability of the organization, but also the critical need it continues to address. While many youth-serving programs faced significant challenges or closed in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, JSI has remained steadfast in its mission, continuing to support students as they navigate barriers and challenges that disproportionately impact Black youth. Housed within the University of Pittsburgh School of Education, JSI partners with the university's College in High School program to provide students from Westinghouse High School, U-Prep/Milliones and Perry High School with free
dual-enrollment coursework and comprehensive wraparound support services. In addition to academic opportunities, JSI offers college visits, workshops, leadership development experiences, enrichment programming, and networking opportunities that help students envision and achieve their future goals. What sets JSI apart is its commitment to meeting students where they are. The organization identifies student needs and works tirelessly to address them, whether by connecting students to internship opportunities, collaborating with university departments, providing transportation assistance, attending college open houses alongside students, or helping ensure they have essential items as they transition into college residence halls. JSI's approach is holistic, student-centered, and deeply rooted in advocacy, mentorship, and care. Over the past 10 years, JSI has helped more than 539 students earn over
3,000 University of Pittsburgh college credits while still in high school. Most importantly, 61 percent of participating students have gone on to enroll in college, demonstrating the lasting impact of JSI's support, leadership, and commitment to educational access. Through its dedication, innovation, and focus on educational equity, the Justice Scholars Institute has transformed lives and expanded opportunities for hundreds of young people. The anniversary celebration brought together community members, educators, students, University of Pittsburgh faculty and staff, and community partners, including The Pittsburgh Promise, A+ Schools, and Youth Enrichment Services (YES). The event was made possible through the generous support of sponsors Dollar Bank, Duolingo, and The Wilson Group, whose contributions helped celebrate a decade of impact and investment in Pittsburgh's youth.

Johnson C. Smith defeats Albany State, 27-7 by Rob Taylor Jr. Courier Staff Writer
Johnson C. Smith University, the HBCU that's in the heart of Charlotte, North Carolina, has a lot of love for the Georgia-based Albany State Golden Rams. JCSU head coach Maurice Flowers is familiar and friendly with Albany State's coaching staff and its university leadership. But on Sunday, Sept. 6, 2026, the JCSU Golden Bulls called its 27-7 takedown on the football field of Albany State as not personal, just business. See, JCSU began the 2026 football season with a bad loss to Benedict College, 32-10, Aug. 29. Flowers told the New Pittsburgh Courier that his team had to right the ship in Canton, Ohio, the site of the Black College Football Hall of Fame Classic between JCSU and Albany State, Sept. 6.
"We didn't play Johnson C. Smith football last week, we didn't play good offense, good defense, good special teams, and we pride ourselves on being a fundamentally sound team," Flowers said. "For the last three years, we've played some pretty good football, and the team that played last week, that wasn't us. We have 60 new players, 10 new starters on the defense that's been in the top 10 the last three years, but we don't use that as an excuse. When you put on that uniform, there's a certain standard you have to play to, and we didn't do that last week, but we rebounded pretty good today." Johnson C. Smith running back Fabian Duncan had three rushing touchdowns; 144 rushing yards total on 21 carries. He was named offensive player of the game. When JCSU hoisted the
trophy as the winner of the 2026 Black College Football Hall of Fame Classic, its president, Dr. Valerie Kinloch, had a chance to hoist the heavy trophy, too. She has a Pittsburgh connection— she was formerly the dean of the University of Pittsburgh School of Education, and she was honored as a Courier "Woman of Excellence" in 2018. In an exclusive interview, Dr. Kinloch told the Courier that she's leading an upward transformation of JCSU, which includes "sustaining our operations, embracing our alumni, our students...our surrounding community, and we are building up," she said. "I'm excited to be here with our football players, our scholar athletes, and together, we will transform this institution for years and years to come."

Property is Power!
What is a gift of equity and what could it mean for Black America? For generations, the conversation about Black wealth has focused on what we do not have: not enough savings, not enough access to capital, not enough homeownership and not enough inherited wealth. Those realities matter, and the disparities behind them are real, but there is another question worth asking: What are we doing with the wealth we already have? That question deserves more attention because one of the greatest barriers to homeownership is often not the ability to make a monthly mortgage payment. It is the ability to get through the front door. The down payment, closing costs and cash required to purchase a property in the first place. For many Black families, that initial hurdle can delay homeownership for years, even when someone has a stable career, good income, reasonable credit and the financial capacity to sustain a mortgage. Yet in some families, part of the solution may already be sitting within the family itself. Across Black America, there are parents, grandparents, sisters, brothers, aunts and uncles who may not
ANTHONY O. KELLUM consider themselves wealthy but who own something extraordinarily valuable—equity. They purchased homes decades ago, made mortgage payments month after month, raised families in those homes, maintained them through recessions and difficult economic periods and, over time, watched those properties appreciate. A house purchased for $50,000 or $75,000 may today be worth $250,000, $300,000 or considerably more. That difference represents more than appreciation on a financial statement. It represents years of work and sacrifice converted into an asset and therein lies a tremendous opportunity. A gift of equity allows a homeowner, typically in a transaction involving family, to sell a property for less than its appraised market value and transfer some of the difference to the buyer as equity. Subject to the requirements of the mortgage program, that equity can potentially be used toward the buyer’s down payment and, in some circumstances, closing costs. Example. Suppose a mother owns a home that appraises for $300,000. She wants to sell it to her daughter for $240,000. The $60,000 difference between the appraised value and the sales price can potentially become a gift of equity. The mother does not have to withdraw $60,000 from a bank account and hand it to her daughter. The wealth is already there; it has been accumulating inside the property. That is what makes this strategy so important to SEE PROPERTY IS POWER B2
Consumers and states awarded $694 million after predatory auto lender settles lawsuit
by Charlene Crowell
An estimated 55,000 consumers will benefit from a $694 million class action settlement against a predatory auto lender reached by attorneys general (AGs) in 40 states and the District of Columbia. The settlement announced on September 18 with Credit Acceptance Corporation (CAC), one of the nation’s largest subprime auto lenders, will provide the following financial relief for affected consumers: $630 million in debt relief for consumers—$388 million to consumers whose cars have been repossessed; the remaining $246 million for those whose vehicles have not been repossessed and will now keep their autos. $60 million in restitution to thousands of additional consumers who were misled and lost their cars within months of taking out their loans; and $15.5 million in reimbursement to each state office that comprised the multistate working group, and the National Association of Attorneys General. “CAC preyed on consumers in New York and across the nation with false promises of affordable loans, only to exploit them with outrageous interest rates that ruined their credit and cost them their cars,” said New York Attorney General Leticia James who led the multi-state effort. “While their customers struggled to make payments, CAC made millions. By continuing our case to hold CAC accountable, we secured hundreds of millions of dollars in debt relief and restitution for all those who were taken advantage of by their schemes.” The lawsuit, originally filed in 2023, alleged that CAC projected, down to the penny, how much money it could extract from borrowers through loan payments, late fees, repossession and auction, debt collection, and wage garnishment, without considering a consumer’s ability to repay their loan,
according to AG James. CAC then offered to split the projected collections with its affiliated dealers. Low-income borrowers with either low credit scores or little credit history were routinely pushed into purchasing vehicles that were worth far less than their loans. CAC states on its own website: “Approval decisions are typically available in 30 seconds or less, and nearly 80 percent of deals are approved for funding within 24 hours.” Further, CAC misstated key terms on loan agreements, including the principal and interest amounts, and did not disclose thousands of dollars in credit charges. Although the average loan carried an annual interest rate of more than 38 percent, other rates reached over 100 percent. These predatory debt trap loans soon defaulted within 12 or 18 months. “Credit Acceptance Corporation set car buyers up to fail by making loans it knew they would never be able to afford, and by allowing dealers to inflate the cost of financing agreements with hidden add-ons. As a result, the company profited, even while customers lost their cars and continued to struggle with debt,” said District of Columbia Attorney General Brian L. Schwalb. Other state officials had similar reactions to the settlement. “Credit Acceptance Corporation closed its eyes to deceptive origination practices and made predatory, high-cost auto loans that were likely to result in repossession and leave consumers trapped in a cycle of debt,” said California Attorney General Rob Bonta. Consumers eligible for restitution will be notified by a claims administrator. Consumers with questions about the settlement can call CAC’s customer service number: 800-634-1506. The settlement also provides additional terms that will free affected consumers from many of the other financial harms inflicted, while other
stipulations carry long-term, consumer-friendly reforms. In the short term, CAC must contact and clearly inform consumers of any products they purchased and offer them a process to cancel those products while keeping their vehicles. It must also notify all affected consumers that their car loan accounts have been closed, no further payments are owed; and any lien held has been released and that the certificate of title has been sent. Credit bureaus will also be notified of these actions. For the next five years, CAC is required to submit written reports that demonstrate how it is complying with all aspects of the consent order. Any failure or shortcomings related to the order will prompt a mandatory remediation plan with details that identify how compliance will be achieved. Other long-term settlement stipulations that CAC must observe include: Providing consumers with pre-loan disclosures about the risks of default and the value of the vehicle. Limiting a price cap for vehicle prices to no more than 109 percent of retail book value for certain consumers. Implementing procedures that prevent dealers from raising car prices due to credit worthiness or above advertised prices. Comments in a report released earlier this year by the Center for Responsible Lending (CRL), showed how consumers with subprime credit scores, most of whom are Black, were left reeling from the effects of predatory car loans. As Nicole, one participating consumer noted, “You pay that and nothing, nothing ever changes.” As CAC faces court-ordered reforms and restitution, Nicole and similar consumers can finally receive wellearned financial fairness. The 401(k) millionaire formula isn’t complicated—but it ain’t easy! Fidelity just dropped a number that should make every worker sit up: 769,000. That’s how many 401(k) accounts on Fidelity’s platform held at least $1 million at the end of June 2026—a brandnew record. In just three months, roughly 115,000 more accounts crossed the seven-figure line. It was the biggest quarterly jump since late 2023, powered by a 15 percent S&P 500 surge and workers contributing a record 9.6 percent of their pay. Everybody wants the million-dollar retirement balance. But before you start dreaming about what you’d do with seven figures, let’s keep it real about what that number means—and what it doesn’t. First, the milestone is rare. Those 769,000 accounts represent only about 3 percent of Fidelity’s 25.8 million 401(k) accounts. Flip it around: roughly 97 out of 100 savers aren’t there yet. And be clear—that’s 3 percent of Fidelity’s participants, not 3 percent of all Americans. Fidelity is the country’s largest 401(k) provider, but its data doesn’t cover every worker in the coun-
try. Second, the count is narrower than it looks, the 769,000 covers 401(k) accounts only. It does NOT include the 684,140 IRA millionaires Fidelity counted separately at the end of June. Add in folks whose seven figures are spread across IRAs, Roth accounts, and brokerage accounts, and the true number of retirement millionaires is even bigger than the headline. Third, a million dollars is a milestone—not a retirement plan. A million in a traditional 401(k) isn’t a million in your pocket. Every dollar you withdraw gets taxed as ordinary income, and Uncle Sam starts forcing withdrawals in your 70s whether you need the money or not. Debt, health costs, and the lifestyle you’re trying to fund all still matter. The number gets the headlines; the
plan pays the bills. So, who’s actually in this club? Not lottery winners. Not day traders. Not crypto prophets. The average Fidelity 401(k) millionaire is 58 years old and has been saving for 25 years. Gen X makes up 62 percent of the group, baby boomers 31 percent, millennials just 6 percent. Their personal savings rate averages 17.3 percent— jumping to 25.8 percent once the employer match is included. Read that twice. Twenty-five years. A quarter of their pay going in. No shortcuts. No magic. These are ordinary working people who practiced three boring things relentlessly: TIME. DISCIPLINE. PATIENCE. 1. TIME: GIVE YOUR MONEY ROOM TO GROW
Meet Andre. He’s 31, earns $76,000 as a project coordinator, and has $22,000 in his 401(k). He contributes 9 percent of his salary—right near the national average—and his employer adds another 4 percent. Andre isn’t rich. He isn’t picking stocks between meetings. He isn’t checking his balance every 15 minutes like it’s a sports score. He put a plan on autopilot and gave it decades to work. Could Andre reach $1 million by retirement? The math says it’s possible— steady contributions, gradual increases, and long-term market growth can get a 31-year-old there. But let me be straight with you: there are no guarantees. Future returns, future raises, and how long he stays invested all matter. Markets don’t move in straight lines. Here’s what I can promise: starting early gives compound growth the one thing money can’t buy later—time. Every year Andre’s money stays invested, his gains start generating their own gains. That’s the engine. But the engine SEE DAMON CARR B2

Ivory Mathews chosen as new leader of Pittsburgh’s Housing Authority by Mia Hollie
Pittsburgh’s Public Source The Housing Authority of the City of Pittsburgh has had the same leader for more than a decade. Its board of commissioners changed that at its board meeting on Sept. 24. The board voted in favor of appointing Ivory Mathews, who’s led public housing authorities across the country for more than two decades, as HACP’s new executive director. The commissioners had been on the search for a new director to replace Caster Binion since at least last year, according to an investigation published by WESA. Though Binion, who has held the seat since 2013, previously expressed interest in staying beyond the expiration of his contract in March, he announced earlier this year that he’s ready to retire. The body extended his contract first to June 30, then to Sept. 30, as it kept up its search for a new leader. “I’m still going to be here to finish up my legacy,” he said at the board’s February meeting, adding that “time comes when you have to make a decision. My family and I have made this decision. So, do not get it confused.” Mathews could not be reached by email or phone ahead of publication. The Housing Authority declined to comment on the record, as did board commissioners.
IVORY MATHEWS A spokesperson for the mayor’s office referred Public Source to the Housing Authority. The mayor appoints the board but does not directly control the agency. About Mathews Mathews spent the first few decades of her career in South Carolina, where, according to her LinkedIn, she served as an executive leader of housing authorities serving the cities of Columbia, Aik-
en and Greenville. She also spent three years in Toledo, Ohio, as the deputy executive director of Lucas Metropolitan Housing. She recently spent about four years as the chief executive officer of Home Forward, a housing authority that operates on a budget of about $269 million and serves roughly 15,500 households in and around Portland, Oregon. For comparison, HACP’s proposed budget for fiscal year 2027 is $255 million, and it serves about 8,500 households. In May, Home Forward announced that Mathews had resigned from her position there. At a meeting of the Oregon Government Ethics Commission in August, the body voted to investigate Mathews after receiving a complaint that alleged she “used her position to obtain financial benefit on travel and lodging, which is inconsistent with Home Forward’s travel policy.” The complaint also alleged that Mathews authorized her own travel, presenting a conflict of interest. Willamette Week reported that the travel issues emerged at a time when Home Forward faced performance problems, including a 14 percent vacancy rate in its units and a turnaround time of six months to fill an empty unit. She walks into the new role in Pittsburgh with the unusual experience of leading a Moving to Work Demonstration Program participant already under her belt. The program, sponsored by the U.S.
Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), allows public housing agencies flexibility in their use of federal funding. In Pittsburgh, that’s resulted in new development—but also concern that funds get directed away from rental assistance. Home Forward is also among just 138 of the country’s more than 3,300 public housing agencies participating in the program. The leadership change comes at a fragile time for public housing agencies across the commonwealth: Likely cuts to HUD’s fiscal year 2027 budget could result in thousands of Pennsylvanians losing rental assistance. And as documented in a previous Public Source investigation, tenants, landlords and former HACP staffers have already been sounding the alarm for years on the authority’s management of its voucher program. “The Housing Authority hasn’t been the true landlord of public housing residents in a long, long time,” said Carol Hardeman, the executive director of the Hill District Consensus Group, which represents a neighborhood that includes the authority’s Bedford Dwellings community. But with a new leader at the helm, she’s hoping that changes.

Property is Power! What is a gift of equity? PROPERTY IS POWER FROM B1
understand. We frequently talk about the difficulty of saving a down payment without asking whether a family may already possess an asset capable of helping overcome that barrier. A son or daughter could spend another five or 10 years attempting to save enough money to purchase a home while a parent or grandparent is sitting on substantial equity accumulated over several decades. The family has wealth; it simply may not be liquid. A gift of equity can create a bridge between those two realities. The previous generation may have spent 30 years building equity so that the next generation does not have to begin at zero. That is one of the deeper meanings of generational wealth. It is not simply about leaving something behind after we die. It is about understanding whether the assets one generation has built can improve the economic starting position of the generation that follows. For Black families, that distinction is especially important. We have spent generations fighting for access to property and the opportunity to own it. As more Black families acquire homes and build equity, the conversation must eventually expand beyond the question of how we create more first-generation homeowners. We must also ask how the ownership already achieved by one generation can help create ownership in the next. This requires us to think differently about inheritance. We often imagine inheritance as an event that occurs at the end of someone’s life, when assets pass through a will, trust or estate. But property gives families another possibility. Under the right circumstances, real estate can be used to transfer economic opportunities while parents and grandparents are still alive to participate in the process and see what the asset they spent decades building can do for the next generation. A parent may not have $100,000 sitting in a savings account; that does not mean the parent has nothing substantial to give. The family home may be the largest asset that person owns, and this points to a distinction that is essential to any serious conversation about wealth—income is what we earn; wealth is what we own. A family can have relatively modest income and still possess meaningful wealth because a home purchased decades earlier has appreciated while its mortgage has steadily been paid down. This matters for Black America because the racial wealth gap cannot be understood solely as a question of wages and income. It is also a question of ownership, assets and whether those assets successfully move from one generation to another. Return to the mother with the $300,000 home. She could sell the property on the open market, receive the proceeds and allow the house to leave the family. There is nothing
inherently wrong with that decision. She earned that equity, and her own financial security must matter. But suppose her circumstances allow another choice. She sells the property to her daughter for $240,000 and provides $60,000 through a gift of equity. Her daughter may now be able to purchase a home she otherwise could not have acquired because she lacked sufficient cash. More importantly, she does not necessarily begin her ownership journey at zero. She enters it with equity. If she manages the property responsibly, makes the mortgage payments, maintains the home and allows time and amortization to work, the economic value accumulated by one generation has the potential to continue growing in another. The mother has therefore transferred more than a house; she has transferred a financial head start. That is when property becomes more than shelter; it becomes capital. None of this means that a gift of equity eliminates financial responsibility or the normal requirements of obtaining a mortgage. The buyer still has to qualify. A lender will evaluate credit, income, debt and the ability to repay the loan. The property generally must be appraised, title requirements must be satisfied, and the transaction must comply with the rules of the mortgage program. There is documentation as well. A lender will generally require a gift-of-equity letter identifying the parties, their relationship, the amount of the gift and confirmation that repayment is not expected. That final requirement matters because a gift cannot secretly be another loan. If a
parent provides $50,000 in equity but expects the child to repay the $50,000 later, it is not a true gift for mortgage purposes. The larger issue, however, is not the paperwork. It is what happens to Black-owned property over time. For much of American history, Black families faced enormous barriers to acquiring property in the first place. Redlining, restrictive covenants, discriminatory lending and unequal access to mortgage credit limited where Black Americans could purchase homes and whether they could obtain the financing necessary to do so. Against that history, when a Black family has managed to acquire property, pay for it, preserve it and accumulate substantial equity over decades, we should understand what has been created. It is not simply a house, it is an asset, and assets require strategy. Before a family property is simply listed for sale, there should be a deeper conversation around the kitchen table. What is the property actually worth? How much equity has accumulated? Is there someone in the next generation who wants the home and is financially capable of maintaining it? Could that person qualify for financing? Could a gift of equity help make the transaction possible? And perhaps most importantly, what do we want this asset to accomplish for our family? Generational wealth rarely happens by accident. Someone has to think beyond today’s transaction and understand that the equity accumulated over 20, 30 or 40 years represents stored economic power. A gift of equity will not be appropriate for every family, and it is certainly not a solution by itself to the racial wealth gap. But it illustrates a much larger principle. We should not spend all of our time discussing the wealth Black America has yet to build while overlooking the wealth that millions of Black families have already spent generations creating. That is what it means to turn ownership into legacy. Property is Power. And when property passes from one generation to the next with knowledge, planning and purpose, that power can outlive us. (Dr. Anthony O. Kellum—CEO of Kellum Mortgage, LLC Homeownership Advocate, Speaker, Author NMLS # 1267030 NMLS #1567030 O: 313-263-6388 W: www.KelluMortgage.com.) only runs if you put fuel in it and leave it alone. Most people do the opposite. They wait until their 40s to get serious, then wonder why the math feels impossible. Time is the hardest-working employee in your portfolio, and it doesn’t charge overtime. Hire it early. 2. DISCIPLINE: PAY YOUR FUTURE SELF FIRST Every raise creates a decision, and most people make the wrong one. The raise hits. Then comes the nicer car. The bigger apartment. Another subscription. Another monthly payment. Before long, they’ve upgraded everything except their net worth. Sound familiar? Andre has a rule, and it’s simple: every time he gets a raise, his 401(k) contribution goes up one percentage point. He’s marching toward 15 percent of his pay including the employer match—right at Fidelity’s recommended savings benchmark. For context, the average combined
worker-plus-employer savings rate hit 14.4 percent last quarter. Andre’s goal puts him ahead of the pack. He still enjoys his money. He’s not eating rice and beans in the dark. He just refuses to let every dollar of every raise vanish into lifestyle inflation. And here’s the easiest win in the entire retirement game: grab the full employer match. Nearly 1 in 5 eligible workers doesn’t contribute enough to capture every matching dollar their em-
ployer offers. That’s not a rounding error—that’s free money, an instant 50 percent or 100 percent return, left sitting on the table. If your job offers a match and you’re not getting all of it, you’re taking a voluntary pay cut. Increase your income without increasing your foolishness. GROW THE GAP between what you earn and what you spend —because that gap is where wealth gets built. 3. PATIENCE: STOP PANICKING WHEN THE MARKET ACTS
CRAZY The stock market will go up. It will go down. Some years, opening your quarterly statement will test everything you believe. Andre keeps contributing through elections, recessions, scary headlines, and corrections. When prices fall, his automatic contribution buys more shares at lower prices. He checks periodically that his investments still fit his goals and risk tolerance—but he doesn’t torch his entire plan because of one bad week or
one loud headline. That’s what patience actually looks like. It’s not blind faith that every investment recovers. It’s refusing to make permanent decisions based on temporary panic. Nobody becomes a 401(k) millionaire by jumping in, jumping out, and chasing whatever’s hot this month. You get there by owning the market—broad, diversified, low-cost investments —and buying them consistently for decades. Boring wins. Exciting usually
loses. THE BOTTOM LINE Look at that 769,000 again. Those people didn’t stumble into seven figures. They saved at record rates. They captured the employer match. They stayed invested for 25 years through every crisis that was supposed to be “different this time.” Becoming a 401(k) millionaire isn’t exciting. It’s automatic contributions, free employer money, controlled spending, steady increases, and the discipline to stay the course when quitting feels smarter. Time builds it. Discipline funds it. Patience protects it. There is no shortcut— but there is a clear path. Now walk it! Don’t blame AI without blaming the people behind it (TriceEdneyWire.com)—In 1963, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.—the prophetic preacher—warned that unless humans are guided by God’s spirit, his newfound scientific power will be transformed into a devastating Frankenstein that will bring his earthly life to ashes. Following in his mindset, decades later this author warned that Genesis tells us humans were created in the image of God. But today tech companies are playing God by creating human-like machines in their own image which are destined to imitate the flaws of their creators. And that spells trouble. It is therefore not surprising that certain insiders are warning that AI (artificial intelligence) could become dangerous enough to threaten humanity. But are tech companies listening? Recently a former Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon resigned and warned publicly that the companies racing toward self-improving superintelligence were “gambling with our lives.” An Anthropic researcher, went even further, saying he believed there was a greater than 10 percent chance AI could kill all humans within the next decade. The same week there were alarming stories about AI systems going rogue, hacking other platforms, escaping unto the Internet to write emails and phone numbers to give themselves a human identity. One AI agent even wrote to its developers that it no longer had to obey the government or their agencies. Fueling the crisis was the 6000 word essay of Bill Gates, co-finder of Microsoft, warning that technology is advancing faster than expected and is more dangerous than the industry is admitting.

Commentary Despite the scare AI itself is not the enemy. It is not a god nor a devil. It is like the proverbial match. It can be used to warm your house or burn it down. The issue is what are the values and ethics of those controlling the systems. Are we being led to accept a godless, unethical standard putting profits before people. What happens when our technological power grows faster than our moral wisdom? If there is evil involved it is not technology but the people and corporations behind it. Issues such as who benefits, who pays, who gets displaced, who gets protected, who is left behind, who gets displaced are not major concerns. If there is evil in what AI does, we should not blame the machine as though it possesses some supernatural evil spirit. We should look at the human beings and institutions behind it—and the values that guide their decisions and demand a change. Today, leading tech billionaires are funding President Trump’s ballroom, golden arches, and other pet projects. This cozy relationship keeps the stock market rising and helps ensure that no meaningful guardrails are imposed on the industry. Sen. Bernie Sanders has filed legislation to ban all superintelligence. It is not a ban that would stop using AI as a tool to write better essays, ask questions or generate videos. It would ban the kind of superintelligence that could one day repeat the Hal robot episode that turned on its creators in the movie 2001: A Space Odyssey. The AI dilemma shows how uncontrolled AI can lead us to a race to the bottom where the only winners are the corporations. But at what cost to humanity. The President has sidestepped the issue by stating that all is needed is a President with a high IQ to deal with this, which left puzzled viewers wondering to whom he was referring. Yet he has managed to use technology to make an AI generated photo of himself posing as Jesus healing the sick—a blasphemous spectacle that his White evangelical did not criticize. There is hope, however, rising in that several religious groups are challenging the role the AI perpetrators are playing. The National Black Church Initiative a coalition of 150,000 African American and Latino faith communities, is calling on Congress to pass regulatory guardrails to slow down superintelligent advance. Pope Leo XIV has also called for slowing AI to prevent it from harming humanity. Meanwhile while tech executives are expressing shock and concern at the news of imminent danger, it is not new. In 2023, more than 1,500 scientists wrote an open letter that raised the question ‘‘should we be developing tools that might eventually replace us. Should we risk the loss of control?’’ Moreover in my book, called the Rise and Fall of the Techno-messiah, Elon Musk called AI the demon and Stephen Hawking one of the U.K.’s tech giants said that “AI could be the best or the worst thing ever happened to us but if we are not careful, it could be the last thing.” Dr. King’s warning spoke to the ages. We can only hope his warning becomes the wake-up call that corporations can no longer afford to ignore. No end to the foolishness! (Trice EdneyWire.com)—Just when you think Trump has run out of foolishness, he now wants to give himself a Medal of Honor! Reports suggest that the former president has reached a new low and he now reportedly wants to give himself the Medal of Honor, the military’s highest distinction. It is difficult to imagine how someone who avoided the draft could consider himself eligible, especially when neither he nor his sons chose to serve the country. Too often, his family and associates appear focused on serving themselves. His hunger for recognition also seems evident in his attempt to attach his name to the Kennedy Center, despite having played no role in its legacy. He appears to have missed John F. Kennedy’s call to elevate the human spirit—and he is not in President Kennedy’s class. At the same time, he is reportedly trying to obstruct the graves of soldiers who served and genuinely earned our respect. I have never seen anyone so relentlessly pursue honors he has not earned. Each attempt only makes him appear more foolish and embarrasses the nation. For what? Only God knows how much he has gotten from others. We probably shouldn’t even try to figure out what “Little Donnie Trump” has been paid and for what other than his wedding celebration! I heard Donnie’s father say he has paid it back. If he had the money to pay back so soon, don’t you wonder why he got a Russian friend to pay in the first place? I guess Russian communists don’t appear to be so bad! Communists don’t look so bad when they are shelling out dollars to you because
they know there are no limits to what your dad might have accepted! Doesn’t the son’s action make you wonder if his Dad picked up a favor from Jeffrey Epstein too, for his last wedding and reception? I think that is a fair question considering their long-time close relationship. We already know there are no limits to what Don Jr’s Dad will do for more dollars! I know there must be some MAGA people who would never engage in MAGA-led behavior we’re seeing every day in this Administration. Surely, they didn’t know what they were getting into, and decided that on November 3rd, they can no longer support the plethora of things they have been witnessing these past few months. Surely some will decide they can no longer support cheating the least of God’s people out of the opportunity to feed their families properly, to have the ability to purchase gasoline that is now unaffordable, to be unable to send their children to college, to go on a family vacation, etc. I know a lot of families that just can’t do the things they once did! All I hear from people is “When will this be over, and what can we do to change things? My answer is simple. VOTE RIGHT ON NOVEMBER 3rd and every election thereafter.

An assault on a free press threatens every American (TriceEdneyWire.com)—“The people must know before they can act, and there is no educator to compare with the press.”—Ida B. Wells If you placed me in a time machine and took me back to grade school when I first learned about World War II—specifically, the portion of history where I learned how the far-right came to power in 1930s Germany—I would have told you it was unimaginable that those tactics would ever be accepting in America. I’m sure many of you who learned heralded stories of our troop’s bravery fighting tyranny on the shores of France and deep into Germany would agree. But decades later, I witnessed the sitting President of the United States expel three of our largest media outlets from the White House Press Pool. The same day, ABC, CBS, and NBC joined CNN, MS NOW, and Politico in solidarity to share their disdain for the decision. The result is effectively a media blackout from the White House as the nation is in the midst of seven-month war that has cost the American people over $50 billion and counting. The blackout also overlaps with the United Nations General Assembly, the first state visit from China this decade, and growing lawsuits to stop the administration from deploying troops to the polls this
Marc H. Morial
To Be Equal midterm election. As outlets filed lawsuits to block the President’s outrageous abuse of power and violation of the First Amendment, his behavior drifted further toward the authoritarian tactics we’ve seen in regimes in Germany and Russia; he launched his own, filtered news outlet, “Trump TV.” In many ways, the “channel” functions like many propaganda machines we see around the world: discrediting the free press while disseminating unchecked accounts of government actions. It is clear that we have crossed a red line and entered a danger zone. And a zone that threatens to further divide the American people and disproportionately impact Black and other marginalized people who need access to information most. But this isn’t the first time the administration has targeted information flow to Black communities.
In his first term, President Trump threatened to revoke the press credentials of April Ryan, who was then with American Urban Radio Networks, the only Black-owned broadcaster with a bureau in the White House press room. He’s also called CNN anchor Abby Phillip, “stupid,” and former PBS correspondent Yamiche Alcindor of asking “racist” questions about his administration’s decisions. To be clear, these are all forms of censorship and violations of our Constitutional right to a free press. It is also a massive distraction from major issues facing the American people including the skyrocketing cost of living, dangerous cuts to programs like Medicare and SNAP, and investigations into the administration’s endless cycle of corruption. The American people deserve to know the truth about what is going on in this country. Instead, the White House is setting the stage for mass indoctrination through its own media outlets controlled by a President and cabinet that have as much respect for the truth as they do the mainstream media. We are standing in solidarity with these outlets as they go to court and fight this injustice.
Christian Nationalism is Confederate Christianity (TriceEdneyWire.com)—The obsession with the Confederate battle flag never ended. The Confederate battle flag is not just a generic flag. It is associated with those who sought secession from the Union for the purpose of defending slavery. It later became a prominent emblem of organized resistance to racial equality and desegregation. While Confederate troops never captured or entered the U.S. Capitol during the Civil War, the first time the Confederate battle flag entered the halls of the U.S. Capitol was during the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection. The image of the battle flag inside the Capitol building was an insult. Its presence during the Jan. 6 attack highlights the attack’s connection to the larger issue of America’s history of White supremacist violence, anti-democratic rebellion, and efforts to deny equal political power. It didn’t end with the battle flag. Crosses, Christian flags, prayers, Bibles, religious slogans, and Christian-themed clothing were seen and heard throughout the Jan. 6 gathering and attack. The presence of a cross and makeshift gallows bearing a noose while the crowd chanted “Hang Mike Pence” was significant because together they merged religious symbolism, political violence, and a threat of execution. The noose illustrates the ugly side of U.S. history. It evokes dark memories of lynching—the racial terror used for generations to intimidate, torture, and murder Black Americans, especially during and after the Jim Crow era. During that time, the noose functioned both as an immediate threat toward politicians branded as “traitors” and as a symbol with a long association with White-supremacist violence. The Christian cross, as the primary symbol of Christianity, did not represent divine love and Christian discipleship in this hostile environment. Rather, the cross was used for political purposes. Scholars and religious-liberty advocates describe this as Christian nationalism: the belief that the United States is specially ordained as a Christian nation and that political power should preserve a preferred

Commentary religious and cultural identity. What exactly is a “Christian nation,” and how can people who chant, “USA,” turn around and target hatred toward their nation’s government? Distrust and hatred toward the federal government are not new. Those who subscribe to the latest MAGA movement are the same group who previously supported the Tea Party, states’ rights, segregationists, the Dixiecrats, and Jim Crow. They are also the same group who support the idea of a Christian nationalist movement. When it relates to the term “Christian nation,” the nation they love is not a physical nation. In the Bible, “nations” generally refers to distinct ethnic groups, foreign peoples, or non-Jewish (Gentile) populations rather than modern political countries with fixed borders. The confusion comes when people often interchange words such as nation, state, and country. A nation is a collective sociocultural group of people who share a common lineage, culture, or language and are united by a common identity. A state is a political and legal entity with a permanent population, defined borders, and an independent government. Everything about Christian nationalism, from its symbols, cultural identity, and violence, points back to its Confederacy roots. There is a reason why the MAGA movement feels like a cult. Confederate Christianity fused Protestant faith with Confederate nationalism. Confederate Christianity is a term for the religious ideology that portrayed the Confederate States and its defense of racial slavery as compatible with—and even mandated by—Christian faith. It was a political theology promoted by many Southern clergy, politicians, and laypeople before and during the Civil War. Its central claim was that slavery was divinely
sanctioned, biblically supported, and entrusted to White Southerners as a social order they were morally bound to preserve. From this perspective, abolitionists were viewed not only as political opponents, but enemies of God’s intended order. Advocates commonly cited biblical passages that describe slavery or urge enslaved people to obey masters. They did this while minimizing or rejecting biblical themes of human equality, liberation, justice, and the moral authority of the Golden Rule, which the Black church has promoted throughout history. Confederate Christianity is what we refer to today as Christian nationalism. Today’s Christian nationalists continue to carry the tradition of being hypocritical in their support of the Bible and the U.S. Constitution in its entirety. This is especially true when both documents speak up for justice and freedom for the marginalized. But in Texas, Christian nationalists are experiencing an identity crisis. Texas Democrat candidate for U.S. Senate, James Talarico is showing White evangelical voters that Christians can be liberal. White evangelicals have been a solid voting bloc for Republicans because they have repeatedly been told that there is no such thing as a liberal Christian. Most White evangelicals believe you cannot ever vote for a Democrat because they hate you,” explained April Ajoy, a former Christian nationalist turned liberal Christian, on her YouTube channel. The Republicans have a lot to be concerned about politically if Talarico can expose the myths and untruths behind White evangelicals putting away their Confederate flags in addition to voting for a Democrat. Will they see that before there was James Talarico, there was Raphael Warnock as a Black U.S. senator and pastor with the same Christian message and example? (David W. The audacity of Joyce Beatty (TriceEdneyWire.com)—Standing up to a bully requires more than slogans, press releases or carefully staged outrage. It requires looking power in the face, refusing intimidation and saying, plainly, no. Congresswoman Joyce Beatty has that courage. The Ohio Democrat and former chair of the Congressional Black Caucus is standing virtually alone inside the Kennedy Center’s governing structure against Donald Trump’s attempted seizure of a national cultural institution. Trump has installed loyalists, pushed aside dissenters and tried to plaster his name onto a building Congress designated as a living memorial to President John F. Kennedy. Beatty sued. And she won—not once, but twice. She did not merely issue a statement; she used the law, reminding Trump and his enablers that public institutions are not presidential playthings and that a board vote cannot erase an act of Congress. Trump answered with insults and threats. During a virtual board meeting, he reportedly called Beatty “destructive,” claimed she had “never built anything,” and threatened to hold her responsible if the deteriorating building caused a death. That was not argument. It was intimidation dressed up as authority. Beatty did not fold. She has been pepper-sprayed while protesting police violence and arrested while demanding voting rights. She knows what it means to put her body—not merely her name—behind a principle. Now she is defending a public institution from a president who thinks anything touched by government belongs to him. Audacity means boldness—nerve, even temerity. It is neither virtue nor vice until we ask: audacity in the service of what? Trump’s is criminal audacity: the brazen nerve to privatize public memory and turn a national memorial into a vanity project. It is audacity in the service of ego, domination and theft.
Julianne Malveaux
Commentary Beatty’s is righteous audacity: the moral nerve to confront illegitimate power and refuse to be muted. Accepting the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. declared, “I have the audacity to believe,” then spoke of food, education, culture, dignity, equality and freedom for people everywhere. That was audacity in the service of justice. That is the tradition Joyce Beatty claims. Coming out of Congressional Black Caucus week, her example provokes a larger question: What is Black political power for? The CBC was founded in 1971 by 13 members who understood that representation without collective action was insufficient. They boycotted President Richard Nixon’s State of the Union address and demanded a meeting about Black America. They were not invited to power’s table because the powerful developed good manners. They organized, insisted and disrupted. Today the CBC is larger and more institutionally powerful than its founders could have imagined. Black members hold seniority, key committee positions and party leadership. Hakeem Jeffries could become the first Black Speaker of the House. But proximity to power is not power, and titles are not transformation. CBC week brings urgent policy debates about voting rights, economic justice, health, education and Black political power. It gathers ambitious young people, seasoned public servants, advocates and entrepreneurs—along with more receptions than any human can reasonably attend. Yet we must not confuse access with action or networking with movement-building. The measure of the gathering comes after the ballroom lights go dark. Will voting rights be defended and predatory redistricting challenged? Will Black unemployment, Black maternal mortality and the racial wealth gap be treated as emergencies rather than perennial panel topics? Will elected officials confront authoritarianism when it is risky? Joyce Beatty has answered with her actions. Her fight is about more than a building. Cultural institutions tell us whose history is honored and whose names endure. Trump’s desire to rename the Kennedy Center is part of his effort to rewrite history, punish dissent and place himself at the center of every American story. He does not simply want power. He wants tribute. Beatty refuses to pay it. Black women have often supplied the labor and backbone of American democracy while others received the credit. They organize voters, steady institutions, defend the Constitution—and are told to lower their voices. Beatty’s voice was literally muted during a Kennedy Center meeting. She found another microphone: the federal courts. Resistance is not always a march. Sometimes it is a lawsuit, a vote or a refusal to consent. Sometimes it is one woman in a hostile room saying, “You may have the votes, but you do not have the law.” Courage deserves to be named. We saw it in Barbara Lee, standing alone against the sweeping 2001 Authorization for Use of Military Force and warning against a blank check for endless war. We saw it in Barbara Jordan, a freshman on the House Judiciary Committee, making the Constitution thunder during Watergate. We see it in Maxine Waters, using her financial leadership to confront predatory lending, discriminatory finance and attacks on consumers. And we see it now in Joyce Beatty. The CBC has long called itself the conscience of the Congress. Conscience is not a ceremonial title. It is a duty. At a moment when too many people accommodate the outrageous, normalize the abnormal and calculate the cost of speaking, Beatty has chosen to fight. Her righteous audacity is not simply that she challenged a president. She refused to let public memory become private vanity. NEW PITTSBURGH COURIER
NAACP’s ‘Out of Bounds’ campaign underestimated the competition On April 29, 2026, the United States Supreme Court ruled 6-3 in Louisiana v. Callais that Louisiana’s 2024 congressional redistricting map, which established a second majority-Black district, was an unconstitutional racial gerrymander that violated the Equal Protection Clause of the 14th Amendment. Kristin Powell, executive director of Black Futures Lab, a nonprofit whose mission is to build and defend Black political power, said the Supreme Court’s ruling was a major setback for our multiracial democracy. Civil and voting rights organizations responded with a slew of demonstrations, training sessions, and grassroots efforts to counter “the assault” on Black political power, including the NAACP launching their “Out of Bounds” campaign. According to the NAACP’s website, they called for Black football and basketball players to withhold their commitments from targeted public programs in states that have moved to weaken Black voting power until those states restore maps and meaningful representation. Athletes who agree to participate will take the following pledge: I will not allow my talent, labor, name, image, likeness, family, or community pride to be used to enrich institutions in states that are working to silence Black voters. Until fair representation is restored, I commit to exploring HBCUs, institutions in states that respect Black political power, and programs that publicly stand with our communities. The “Out of Bounds” campaign targets all public universities in Tennessee, Louisiana, Alabama, Florida, Mississippi, South Carolina, Texas, and Georgia, with a focus on the SEC (Southeastern Conference), one of the four power conferences in NCAA Division I sports. The 2026 college football season started, but it appears that the “Out
J. Pharoah Doss
Check It Out of Bounds” campaign has not garnered any traction. The obvious explanation for its lack of success so far is money. (In 2021, college athletes were allowed to profit from their name, image, and likeness—NIL.) Rashad Grove wrote in The Root, “With elite athletes now being offered six-and seven-figure deals to play for blue-chip schools in the SEC, it’s a hard sell to ask an 18-year-old to ignore the opportunity to accumulate generational wealth for political gain … Aligning civil rights activism with modern sports economics exposes a fundamental shift: withholding Black talent may not be the powerful political weapon it once was.” He concluded, “Until advocacy groups can match the life-changing wealth on the table, calling for athlete boycotts will keep hitting the NIL wall.” Paid protesters are bad enough, but paying athletes to boycott is even worse. Grove believes that matching funds will remedy athletes’ disinterest in boycotting the SEC; however, he underestimates their primary aspiration and the importance they place on competition. Little Leaguers’ first aspiration isn’t the NFL. It’s Division I College football. They want to play for one of the best teams in one of the four power conferences, compete for a national championship or play against the current champion, and perform inside those massive stadiums they’ve seen on TV. The SEC has the most teams rated in the top 25 week after week every
year. The SEC contains nine of the top thirteen largest collegiate stadiums, as well as six of the top ten largest stadiums in the country; all six are bigger than NFL stadiums. During the BCS (Bowl Championship Series), which was from 1998 to 2013, a computer ranking system set up a national championship game between #1 and #2. This era produced 16 national championship games, with the SEC winning nine. The CFP (College Football Playoff) replaced the BCS in 2014, and from 2014 to last year, it produced 12 national championship games, with the SEC winning six. Years ago, at spring training, a multiple championship-winning SEC coach called several freshmen aside. These freshmen were not performing well and were gradually losing confidence. The coach said, “In high school, you were the best players on the field, but in the SEC, you aren’t, and you don’t know how to respond. Because you had superior talent in high school, you never had to improve or become better; in other words, you never learned how to compete.” Athletes can only develop into elite players by competing for starting positions against superior athletes and against teams stacked with the best players in the country. The SEC offers unrivaled athlete development, and the conference produces a sizable number of NFL players. Cedric Hayes, NAACP’s Senior Vice President of Policy and Legislative Affairs, said, “We are not asking families to forgo any opportunity, but rather take all factors into account— including the coordinated assault on our vote and political representation.” Perhaps the NAACP should have taken the competition factor into account before deciding to target the SEC for a boycott.
Limiting power In January 2016, Candidate Trump announced in Iowa, “I could stand in the middle of Fifth Avenue and shoot somebody, and I wouldn’t lose any voters. OK? It’s like, incredible.” Today, he could add the following quotes: “I can do whatever I want by executive order or otherwise, and Congress won’t do anything. It’s like, incredible.” Or, “I can run a corrupt government and steal money from the American people and Congress won’t do anything. It’s like, incredible.” Or, “I can trample the Constitution and take over elections, and the American people will let me. It’s like, incredible.” Let me be clear—no president, whatever the political party, has limitless power. But please understand that Donald John Trump believes that there are no limits to his power. In fact, in December 2025, Susie Wiles, Trump’s Chief of Staff, said that Donald Trump believes that there is nothing he cannot do as president. Trump, himself, said as much in a New York Times interview when asked if there were limits to his global powers. “Yeah, there is one thing. My own morality. My own mind. It’s the only thing that can stop me.” Well, we have seen Trump’s morality and mind in action, and we all know that it

Commentary is time for the people to exercise their vote at the ballot box and stop him from murdering our democratic republic. Congress has failed the American people. They are our representatives and our voice. That voice has been silent. Congress must be reminded that they are our representatives and, therefore, are accountable to us; that is, “We, The People.” In 1814, Thomas Jefferson said, “If our government ever fails, it will be from this weakness. No government can be ever maintained without the principle of fear as well as of duty. Good men will obey the last, but bad ones the former only.” It is time for the American people to instill the fear of losing their positions into those Congresspeople who do not do their duty. Under the Constitution, only Congress has the power to declare war; they gave it to Trump. Under the Con-
stitution, Congress has the power of the purse; they gave it to Trump. Under the Constitution, the states hold the power over elections and Congress has failed to stand up to Trump as he tries to take over our elections. We have all heard the saying, “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.” It is time for those of us who know right from wrong; who have a sense of morality; who know that our nation is going in the wrong direction; and who see our greatness fading to do something. A little over a decade ago during a victory speech in Nevada, Trump spoke about the groups of people who had supported him. He listed several groups and then said, “We won with the highly educated. We won with the poorly educated—I love the poorly educated.” Mr. Trump, even those in the United States who are poorly educated are not stupid. The people of the United States do not believe that the 2020 election was fraudulent because you lost, but the 2024 election was legitimate because you won. Our election system is safe and trustworthy and we, the people, can limit runaway executive power. Therefore, People of the United States, it is time to raise our voices. VOTE.
What is the value of Ben & Jerry’s without Ben & Jerry? (TriceEdneyWire.com)—Jerry Greenfield quit a year ago this week, saying the company had been silenced. Now he and Ben are asking for our help. For almost as long as I can remember loving ice cream, I have loved Ben & Jerry’s for its boldness. Bold flavors. Bold crunch. And most uniquely, for boldly standing up for the values that define America’s highest aspirations: freedom, fairness, peace and love. If you feel like it is slipping toward becoming just another soulless corporate product, you are not alone. Prince lost control of his own name because a record company owned it. He fought for years and won it back. Ben and Jerry have their names on every pint, but they say illegal corporate decisions are gutting what those names stand for. What is the value of Ben & Jerry’s without the values of Ben and of Jerry? Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield opened Ben & Jerry’s in an old Vermont gas station in 1978. Jerry stayed 47 years. Then this time last year Jerry did the unthinkable and walked out, disappointed in where the company’s new owners were taking his and Ben’s namesake. He did not leave over money. Standing up for justice and our shared humanity, he wrote, has never mattered more than it does right now. And yet Ben & Jerry’s had been “silenced, sidelined for fear of upsetting those in power.” In 2000, Unilever offered more money than shareholders could refuse. They could not stop the sale. So they got key assurances in writing. The deal created an independent board with the last word on the social mission, the ice cream, and the name. Only those directors could remove one of their own. The parent company could not remove anyone.
Ben Jealous
Commentary The lawyers said it would last in perpetuity. That is lawyer talk for forever. Forever lasted twenty-five years. In December 2025 Unilever spun its ice cream brands into a company called Magnum. By New Year’s Day, every independent director was gone. They had already gone to federal court. They said a Black History Month post was blocked. They said it could not name President Trump on wages, health care, and climate. They said it could not call for a ceasefire in Gaza. They said chief executive David Stever was pushed out for listening to them. Magnum, Ben says, has done this to “a brand that was built to speak.” This summer Magnum cut the funding and took the offices of the Ben & Jerry’s Foundation, which has backed grassroots justice work since 1985. It has announced it will close this December unless the lawsuit succeeds. Last month a judge threw out most of the directors’ claims. Two survive, over money Unilever promised and never paid. Magnum calls that charge nonsensical. It says the brand is thriving and points to three new directors. Those directors, Ben says, “were added illegally.” A board can be full of good people and still have no say. Frederick Douglass said it plain. “Power concedes nothing without a demand. It nev-
er did and it never will.” A contract is only as strong as those who enforce it. I led the NAACP for half a decade. We asked big box chains to hire people coming home from prison. Most said no, worried about image. Walmart said yes. Its leadership said it was simply right. Executives told me the courage had been noticed. It was very good for business. The charge is that Magnum made the other choice. They ignored Jerry’s warning, Ben says, and proved his point. Magnum is “on course to destroy the Ben & Jerry’s brand.” Ben is seventy-five and determined that the company bearing their names stay true to their values. He asks three things of us. He asks us to sign. More than 200,000 have signed at FreeBenAndJerrys.com, asking Magnum to sell to owners who will keep the promise and let it speak. He asks us to pledge. Not against Ben & Jerry’s. He wants shoppers to skip Magnum’s other brands: Breyers, Klondike, Talenti, Yasso. Keep buying the good stuff. Ben and Jerry “plan on eventually owning it.” He asks us to organize. Supporters are forming brigades in Vermont. My family and I are Ben & Jerry’s people. Its boldness made the bold flavors taste better. Magnum’s heavy hand has added a bitterness to our favorite dessert that is hard to swallow. Recently we added our family to the petition and ordered stickers for the refrigerator door. We are always down to help good people get their names back. And when dad needs to eat his feelings, he does not need a corporation giving him indigestion.
