New Homewood Pool opens to rave reviews

The Homewood Pool is now open.

But it's not just any pool.

It's a brand new, state-ofthe-art pool that's been 12

to 13 years in the making.

Mubarik Ismaeli, president of Homewood Community Sports, fought for the new pool to be constructed for his community. For the kids in the Homewood community.

For the parents, grandparents, for family, for unity, for pride in their Homewood community.

"The only way I was able to do this was with the community support," Ismaeli told the New

Pittsburgh Courier after the ribbon-cutting for the pool, Friday, July 10, 2026, in front of about 100 kids and other elected officials.

"Once we come together, there's nothing that can stop us. That's what I

want everybody that looks at this project to know... we all came together for one cause and made it happen."

The Homewood Pool's opening is very welcomed, especially with Pittsburgh

experiencing heat waves this summer with temperatures approaching 95 degrees and the heat indexes above 100 degrees.

Nichole Denise Hogan's legacy lives on through community blood drives Hogan died at age 13 from leukemia

One after one, people lined up at the Carnegie One Braddock Library to give blood, because as North Braddock Borough Council President Lisa Franklin-Robinson has said, "blood means life."

The people were giving blood on Thursday, June 18, 2026, to honor the life of Nichole Denise Hogan, who passed away one week after her family learned she had leukemia. Hogan died on Jan. 7, 2022. She SEE HOGAN A4

IN MEMORIAM: Johnson changed Black beauty—and Black History BlackPressUSA Newswire—George E. Johnson, founder of Johnson Products Co., died at age 99.

He founded the company in 1954 with a $250 loan.

He parlayed a $250 personal loan into a business empire and, in the process, changed how Black America saw itself. A beauty-products pioneer, he broke Wall Street’s color barrier and later helped catapult a locally televised Chicago music show into a national pop-culture touchstone.

And, for the better part of a century, the name George E. Johnson became inseparable from Black hair care in America, at a time when the beauty industry treated Black consumers as little more than an afterthought—if they thought of them at all.

The legendary founder of Johnson Products Co., Johnson died July 6 at his home in downtown Chicago. He was 99.

‘Visionary Business Leader’ His son, John Edward Johnson, told The Chicago Sun-Times that his father died of natural causes.

The New York Times, citing Johnson’s second wife, Madeline Murphy Rabb, reported the cause as a respiratory illness.

“George was a visionary business leader who built a hair care empire, broke barriers on Wall Street, and helped fuel the fight for civil rights,” his family said in a statement.

“Above all, he was a devoted family man whose example inspired generations.”

Johnson founded Johnson Products in 1954 with his first wife, Joan Johnson, on Chicago’s South Side. Within six years, the company controlled nearly 80 percent of the Black hair care market. In 1971, it became the first Blackowned company listed on the American Stock Exchange, now NYSE American.

George was a visionary business leader who built a hair care empire, broke barriers on Wall Street, and helped fuel the fight for civil rights.

1779—Noted Black spy Pompey Lamb supplies the American revolutionary forces with information, which enables them to win the Battle of Stony Point—the last major battle of the Revolutionary War in New York State. Lamb had worked as a fruit and vegetable delivery man for the British Army.

1822—Philadelphia becomes one of the first major cities to open its public schools to Blacks.

The first school was a segregated one just for Black boys. One for girls was opened four years later in 1826. The city’s public schools would remain segregated until the 1930s.

1862—Crusading journalist and anti-lynching activist Ida B. Wells-Barnett is born in Holly Springs, Miss. Wells-Barnett was a true militant activist. Her editorials so angered Whites in the Memphis, Tenn., area that a mob burned down the building which housed her newspaper. She was also one of the original founders of the NAACP and in 1884 she committed a “Rosa Parks” type act when she refused an order to give up her seat on a train to a White man. It took the conductor and two other men to remove her from the seat and throw her off the train.

1882—Violette A. Johnson is born.

She would become the first Black female attorney allowed to practice before the United States Supreme Court.

For the first time, Black consumers could walk into a beauty supply store, open a magazine or turn on a TV and see attractive, well-groomed people who looked like them—styled by a company a Black man had created from scratch.

Small Investment, Big Payoff Johnson’s millions later bankrolled “Soul Train,” making him the show’s exclusive sponsor. The cash infusion helped the show’s founder, Chicago deejay Don Cornelius, turn it into appointment viewing for Black households across the country.

Born in 1927 in Richton, Mississippi, Johnson moved to Chicago as a child with his mother, Priscilla Johnson Howard, and his brothers. Growing up poor on the South Side, Johnson shined shoes, hawked newspapers, and worked as a waiter before dropping out of high school to sell cosmetics door-todoor for Fuller Products, an earlier Black-owned beauty company.

There, Johnson came upon the idea that would make him a fortune: a barber’s concept for a safer hair straightener that his employer had turned down.

Working with chemist Herbert Martini, Johnson developed the formula himself, then set out on his own.

Changing Times and Tastes Though it cornered the Black beauty market for decades, Johnson’s business struggled in recent years.

Johnson Products Co.’s dominance gradually waned as cosmetics giants, including Revlon, saw its success and elbowed their way into a market that the Chicago entrepreneur had essentially all to himself. Meanwhile, as Afros, relaxers, and Jheri curls gave way to locs, box braids, and natural hairstyles, many of Johnson’s products fell out of favor with Black consumers.

After George and Joan Johnson divorced, ownership of the business changed hands several times before a Black-led investment group acquired it from the global conglomerate Procter & Gamble in 2009.

Joan Johnson died in 2019. George Johnson is survived by his wife, Madeline Murphy Rabb; his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

1794—Former slave and minister Richard Allen officially dedicated the Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Philadelphia, Pa. The church was the first all-Black denomination not affiliated with a larger White congregation. The incident leading to the dedication took place in 1787 when Allen, Absalom Jones and several other Blacks were thrown out of Philadelphia’s St. George’s Methodist Episcopal Church when they attempted to pray along-side Whites. The AME Church would go on to become one of the largest Black religious denominations in America.

1862—As the Southern, pro-slavery rebels prove more difficult in battle than expected, Congress passes a law giving President Abraham Lincoln the authority to begin recruiting free Blacks and recently freed slaves into military service during the Civil War. 1911—Frank M. Snowden is born in York County, Va. The Harvard educated Snowden would become a prominent professor at Washington, D.C.’s, Howard University and a leading authority on Blacks in ancient history. His major works include “Blacks in Antiquity: Ethiopians in the Greco-Roman Experience” and “Before Color Prejudice: The Ancient View of Blacks.” Snowden documented that “Ethiopians pioneered religion” and played a major role in the development of the greatness of ancient Egypt. Snowden also showed that Blacks influenced the development of both ancient Greek and Roman societies working in capacities ranging from musicians to scholars.

Snowden died in February 2007 at the age of 95.

1942—Heavyweight boxing champion Muhammad Ali is born Cassius Marcellus Clay in Louisville, Ky. Ali would join the Nation of Islam and become a major opponent of the U.S. war in Vietnam. He would later split with Malcolm X when Malcolm broke away from the Nation of Islam.

1944—The so-called Port of Chicago Mutiny takes place. In the middle of America’s involvement in World War II, an ammunitions depot at Port Chicago, Calif., explodes killing 320 men—most of them Black. It was the worse stateside disaster in U.S. military history.

However, when 258 surviving Black soldiers refused to return to work until they received certain safety guarantees, their refusal was labeled a mutiny by military authorities. Fifty of the soldiers were convicted of mutiny and jailed. However, after the war, President Harry S. Truman commuted their sentences.

• JULY 18

1753—This is believed to be the day Lemuel Haynes escaped from slavery in Massachusetts. The product of a Black father and a mother who was normally described in history texts as “a White woman of respectable ancestry,” Haynes would become a renowned figure in early American history. He fought with distinction in American Revolutionary War for independence from Britain and would become the

first Black person ordained as a minister by a mainstream Protestant church.

He was also the first Black in American history to become head minister at a predominantly White church.

1863—Sergeant William H. Carney was the first Black person to receive the Congressional Medal of Honor for bravery in battle. The bravery which led to the medal occurred on this day in 1863 at the battle of Battery Wagner.

1918—Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela is born in Transkei, South Africa. Mandela would spend 27 years in prison for his struggles against the system of racial oppression in South Africa known as apartheid. When he was finally released in 1990, it was a day of massive celebration for Blacks and progressive Whites throughout South Africa and much of the world. He won hundreds of awards for his anti-apartheid efforts including the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993.

With the downfall of apartheid in the early 1990s, Mandela would become the first Black president of the country in 1994. He was widely praised for not launching a campaign of revenge against his White former oppressors.

• JULY 19

1848—Anti-slavery activist and the foremost Black leader of his day Frederick Douglass gives a stirring speech at the First Women’s Rights Convention, which took place in Seneca Falls, N.Y. Douglas helped sway the 260 women and 40 men present to back a women’s right to vote resolution being pushed by Elizabeth Cady Stanton. Initially, many of the delegates opposed the resolution fearing it was too radical an idea for the times but changed their minds after hearing Douglass’ presentation. Women would not finally get the right to vote until 1920.

1941—The first U.S. Army Flying Academy for Black cadets is officially dedicated at Tuskegee, Ala. Between 1940 and 1946, 992 pilots were trained.

More than 400 would see action in World War II even though many Whites initially felt Blacks were not intelligent enough to fly airplanes. The Tuskegee Airmen, as they became known, would fly with great distinction during the war.

They were credited with downing 109 German planes and destroying numerous enemy fuel dumps, trucks and planes. Approximately 150 of them lost their lives during training or combat.

Finally, in March 2007,more than 300 surviving members and their wives were honored and the airmen received the Congressional Gold Medal.

1952—Joe Louis Reliford broke the color barrier in Georgia State Baseball in Statesboro, Ga. He pinch hit, threw out a runner from left field and robbed the Statesboro Pilots best hitter, Jim Shuster of a home run—all in one inning and at the age of 12. His historical catch is on display in Cooperstown, N.Y., where he is the only batboy among Major League Baseball Hall of Fame Inductees. Reliford is the author of “From Batboy to the Hall of Fame.”

• JULY 20

1967—The first Black Power Conference takes place in Newark, N.J. More than 1,000 delegates representing 126 organizations attended. The conference represented a break with the integration-with-Whites thrust of the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s.

Instead, delegates called for greater focus on Black political empowerment, economic development, community control and the building of Black institutions.

• JULY 21

1864—Amazingly, what is now considered the first Black daily newspaper begins publishing on this day during slavery. The New Orleans Tribune was founded by wealthy Black Doctor Louis C. Roudanez and edited by a Belgium Jean-Charles Heuzean. The Tribune, however, actually followed the Daily Creole which began publication in 1856. But it was so pressured by Whites that it adopted pro-slavery positions. The Tribune, meanwhile, would begin as a tri-weekly and become a full-fledged daily in October.

1896—The National Association of Colored Women is founded in Washington, D.C., and Mary Church Terrell is elected president. The association would establish nurseries, help orphans, and battle for a woman’s right to vote. Terrell became an activist and power broker in the nation’s capital fighting for desegregation of restaurants and helping build schools. She was born in 1863 and died in 1954.

2001—Blues legend John Lee Hooker dies. He was 83.

The blood drive was officially called the "Fifth Annual Nichole Denise Hogan Blood Drive."

"Nichole was a child of the community. Her heart was as big as gold. She loved everything and everybody. Everybody in this community loved her for who she was because she was just a sweet, wonderful person," said Hogan's grandmother, Nicole Glaze, at the event.

According to the Leukemia Research Foundation, leukemia is a type of cancer found in a person's blood and bone marrow and is caused by the rapid production of abnormal white blood cells. These abnormal white blood cells are unable to fight infection and impair the ability of the bone marrow to produce red blood cells and platelets.

Leukemia can be either acute or chronic. Chronic leukemia progresses more slowly than acute leukemia, which requires imme-

diate treatment.

According to the American Cancer Society, most leukemia cases involving children are acute.

Overall, when a child is diagnosed with cancer, 33 percent of the time, it's leukemia.

Selena Singletary, a member of the National Council of Negro Women, was one of the people who gave blood at the event.

She said she met Hogan one time and thought, "she was the sweetest little girl.

She was very polite, smile that lit up the room."

If Hogan were alive today, her father, Nic Hogan, said she would have graduated from high school this year.

A posthumous high school diploma for Nichole Hogan was presented to her family, the diploma shown on a table at the blood drive along with a number of Nichole Hogan's photos.

Nic Hogan said his daughter's leukemia was very aggressive. Nichole Hogan was involved in a serious car accident in South Carolina about six months prior to her leuke-

mia diagnosis, but there's no confirmed evidence to suggest that the accident or the corresponding medical care had anything to do with the future cancer diagnosis.

The blood drive in Nichole Hogan's honor is also meant to bring awareness to the blood shortage across the nation.

"Every pint can save a life, as much as the (blood) shortage is," Nic Hogan said.

Nic Hogan also said that in his daughter's honor, there were two scholarship recipients this year from Propel Schools to help them continue their education into college.

"She was special," Nic Hogan said of his daughter, Nichole. "She was a beautiful soul, she was a leader among her peers."

Glaze, Nichole Hogan's grandmother, added: "She would do anything for anybody, and we're just proud of her. With this blood drive, we need for her legacy to live on."

"What we have here is a great example of how things can get done all over the City of Pittsburgh," echoed Pittsburgh Mayor Corey O'Connor. "And this is a community that has fought for this for over 13 years...this doesn't happen without community determination. A community that fought for their future."

Mayor O'Connor added: "Please be so proud of this great job that you did. So many parks directors, so many mayors, so many councilmembers, but here we are, we made it. This community deserves it."

Ismaeli, with people like community developer Derrick Tillman by his side, fought for the new pool during the Bill Peduto mayoral administration, onto the Ed

Gainey administration, and now to the O'Connor administration. But it's not just the pool they were fighting for.

They wanted to give Homewood an entire park transformation, and the pool is one part of it. Next to the pool is a new football field with a new scoreboard and locker rooms. It's all part of a $22.87 million transformation of Homewood Park, which the city said is one of its largest investments in a neighborhood park in decades.

When it's all said and done, Homewood Park will have a connection to the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Busway, a pedestrian bridge to Westinghouse Park, and an amphitheater and performance space in partnership with the Afro American Music

For Ismaeli, he said at first, he wasn't sure if all the pieces would come together to get Homewood Park to look like parks in neighborhoods with higher financial resources.

"When I didn't think it was possible for us to get something this great, Derrick (Tillman) said to me, 'if Fox Chapel and the North Hills can have it, why can't we?' We deserve the best like everybody else."

In his comments, Tillman thanked Ismaeli for his tireless work in helping to make the new pool become a reality.

And Tillman's message to the youth: "The same effort that you put on that field, the same way you go hard to win, take that to every area of your life."

And Ismaeli's message to the kids in attendance: "No matter how successful you become, come back to your community and give back."

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., Alpha Alpha Omega chapter, in partnership with Ivy Charitable Endowment of Pittsburgh Inc., on June 20, 2026, hosted its Pink Lemonade Achievement Awards Brunch, recognizing outstanding scholars and community leaders while investing in the future of the next generation.

The event celebrated individuals whose dedication, perseverance, and commitment to excellence have distinguished them in their educational and personal journeys.

Honorees included Toni S. Kendrick Award recipients: Andrea Johnson of Gateway High School and Kendall Roberts of Perry Traditional Academy. The Non-Traditional Women's Achievement Award was presented to Jionna Rodgers, a student at Carlow University, in recognition of her determination and academic achievement.

nized Madelyn Hairston Giddens HBCU Achievement Award recipients: Saniya Jones of City Charter High School and Paige Oliver of Penn Hills High School for their commitment to higher education and future success.

The brunch, held in the Hebron Building in Penn Hills, highlighted the importance of scholarship, leadership, and community support, bringing together family members, supporters, and community partners to celebrate the recipients' accomplishments.

3 Steps to Help Recognize Stroke Signs and Risks for Better Outcomes

stroke can happen to anyone at any age.

In fact, every 40 seconds someone in the United States has a stroke, with approximately 800,000 people experiencing a stroke annually, according to the American Heart Association, making it a leading cause of death and serious, long-term disability.

A stroke happens when normal blood flow in the brain is interrupted. When parts of the brain don’t get the oxygen-rich blood they need, those cells die.

However, many strokes may be prevented, treated and overcome by understanding the risk factors and taking steps toward managing them.

“When a stroke happens, every minute matters,” said Dr. Adrian JaquinValdivia, a stroke neurologist at HCA Healthcare and American Stroke Association volunteer expert. “The faster someone gets treatment, the better the chance of saving brain function. On average, nearly 2 million brain cells die every minute a stroke goes untreated. Early treatment improves survival rates and reduces disability.”

Take control of your brain health with this information from the American Stroke Association.

Know the Warning Signs Because strokes do not discriminate, knowing the signs is key. To help you recognize common warning signs and symptoms of stroke and take action in moments that matter, remember this simple acronym: B.E. F.A.S.T. B: Balance loss – sudden difficulty with walking, dizziness or loss of balance or coordination.

E: Eye (or vision) changes – sudden vision loss or trouble seeing in one or both eyes.

F: Face drooping – one side of the face droops or feels numb; a smile may look uneven.

A: Arm weakness – one arm feels weak or numb or drifts downward when raised.

S: Speech difficulty – a telltale sign of a stroke is slurred speech or trouble speaking.

T: Time to call 911 – If someone is having any of these symptoms, even if the symptoms go away, call emergency services immediately to jumpstart care. Be sure to check the time so you’ll know when the first symptoms started.

Kiki B. Jones gets proclamation for decades of community work GORDON “G.O.” SHEALEY “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.”- 2 Timothy 4:7 Gordon “G.O.” Shealey was born on February 10th, 1948, in Flat Creek, Alabama to Gracie Mae and George Shealey, the fourth of their “magnificent seven” children.

He passed from this life into eternity on July 2nd, 2026, at home with his wife and daughter present. He was many things, but most of all beloved by every person whose life he touched.

Like many Black Americans in the 20th century, the young Shealey family moved North. Gordon was five years old, first living on the Hill before moving to St. Clair Village, where he grew up. His family was the foundation of his life. In St. Clair Village and all over the South Side, he built strong bonds that lasted him a lifetime. At an early age, he met the love of his life, Charmayne M. (Wilson) Shealey, who he remained devoted to until his final breath. Gordon was educated at Phillip Murray Elementary School, Knoxville Junior High, and graduated from Carrick High School. While in school, he was a terrific athlete with a talent for connecting with people everywhere he went, a skill he retained for the rest of his life.

After graduating from Carrick, Gordon was drafted and served valiantly in the Vietnam War, being honorably discharged from the U.S. Army in 1970. Returning to Pittsburgh, he and Charmayne welcomed two children, Thomas Gordon (19682025) and Sharene Shealey. He loved his children deeply, and imparted a lifetime of wisdom and tough love upon them. Gordon was employed by Duquesne Light for 43 years until his retirement. He also worked more than his fair share of shifts at The Bell, a St. Clair Village haunt managed by his father. In these years, Gordon shared joy with his entire family, creating memories to last a lifetime.

Known affectionately to his family as G.O., he never hesitated to be there for a sibling, a niece, a nephew, a child, or a grandchild. As the grandfather of eight and great-grandfather of one, G.O. built individual and special relationships with each one of his grandchildren. He was there for every birthday, graduation, and special moment for each of them. G.O. was known to arrive at family events with a multitude of children packed into his red Cadillac, taking care to impart life lessons and the same collection of Frankie Beverly CDs onto them. The entirety of the Shealey clan will miss his joyous presence.

Gordon was a fan of all things Pittsburgh sports and was one of the few people who you could catch wearing a Penn State hat and Pitt shirt. He was always fair and never biased (unless it was against the Ravens). He read daily, listened to understand, and had a sense of joyful realism that never faded. Blessed with a streak of luck, he loved playing the lottery, making wagers with his brother Ron, and had a standing date at the Rivers until his health began to fail. G.O. also enjoyed playing chess, being in community with his fellow Vietnam Veterans, a very specific brand of pork rinds, hoagies, Heineken, and many other things. His death represents the loss of a kind of man that is very rare in this day and age: brave, just, good, and most of all, kind. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Gordon was preceded in death by his parents George Hamilton and Gracie Mae (Vann) Shealey, his son Thomas, and his grandson Tariq Gordon Felix. Left behind to cherish his memory are his beloved wife of 55 years Charmayne (Wilson) Shealey, his adoring daughter Sharene Shealey, his grandchildren Alexandra, Kennedy, Thomas, and Erin Bowens and Aneesah Shealey, Nasirah and Salimah Scott, his treasured great-grandson Kairo Bowens, his siblings Gwendolyn (Lionel) Deanes, George L. (Carolyn) Shealey, Louis (Alberta) Shealey, Eugene (Cassandra) Shealey, Ronald (Marcia) Shealey, and La’Fay (George) Pinchback, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Gordon’s ashes will be interred at Homewood Cemetery following a small ceremony with military honors. In lieu of flowers, the family requests consideration of donations to the United Negro College Fund; G.O. emphatically quoted their slogan, “a mind is a terrible thing to waste!”

Racial bias in American sports will be hard to erase My late brother Thomas Warren Bruce was, and I shall put this as mildly as possible, “a connoisseur of the fruits of the vine.”

On any occasion that he would partner up with MD-2020 and lemon juice or when he felt a bit more adventurous, he would put on his big boy pants and down some Inver House scotch and milk. He would at that point begin the transformation into an ultra-disciple of the ages, viewing life through “wine-colored glasses.”

From that point on, he would offer his perpetual analysis of all life, dead or alive, young or old, male or female, and sum up all situations as simply just being, “truth and reality.”

You folks might not believe me, but even amid one of his inebriated escapades, I swear that he could’ve transported himself back to the time of the Norse Gods, he could have taught Odin and Thor a thing or two about the origin of life. At the tender age of 10 or 11, I could have sworn that MD-2020 was the source of the ultimate awakening, you diggg….

There are times that we must step back and revisit the past in order to create a stronger founda-

tion for the future. There are also times the house must be totally gutted to be made whole and habitable again. On June 22, 2018, I posted an article on newpittsburghcourier. com titled: "Lost Legacy—the urbanization of sports in America." One of the social and econom-

ic factors that I addressed in the article was: “Sports became not only a diversion but represented the conversion of the physically demanding labor and conditions that were 'hellish' at best to skills of hitting and catching a baseball. Exhibiting skills on a baseball field on Sundays after church represented far more hope for living the 'good life' than pouring steel. According to www.sabr.org, in 1874 the highest-paid player in Major League Baseball was Ross Barnes, who earned the princely sum of $2,000. Around the same time, the aver-

age U.S. worker earned 22 cents per hour, generally averaging between $200 and $400 annually. One of the only ways that a lower-class White or Black athlete had to escape the slums of America and Europe was through sports.”

Folks of color oftentimes remind me of a vinyl recording that has been rendered unplayable because it has been scratched and damaged beyond repair, but folks continue to place damaged goods on the turntable, hoping some magic trick invented by magicians Harry Houdini or David Copperfield will reverse the damage and when the recording is again placed on the turntable, the recording will play as if there was no damage at all.

Also, folks of color have morphed into perpetual regurgitators and emulators with no economic or social relief in sight. We continue to celebrate the miseries of the past with cookouts, picnics and a day off, while the real issue of racism continues to perpetually hunt down and devour the paradigm of equality like a pride of starving bloodthirsty lions.

We continue to write and whine about racism.

Frankly I am, and all of you, should be sick of it.

All these sports institutions are founded and maintained by Eurocentric ownership groups, and whether the sport is professional soccer, football, basketball, baseball, wiffle ball, dodgeball, pickleball or any other ball: whatever race, gender or creed that begins the sport is going to construct rules and regulations that provide a distinct advantage for that group.

If we continue to write about the injustices that continue, the batteries of hate will continue to be recharged, and the reservoirs of racial injustice will continue to be refilled.

The more that their deeds are covered, the more that some of them are empowered to repeat those deeds so that future generations will be empowered to repeat those deeds and future generations will be inclined to accept those deeds.

Constantly providing the details of these deeds to the public are relative to an arsonist continuing so set fires knowing that the media is going to cover those events and the perpetrators will be stimulated by viewing cameos of themselves, watching

the firefighters battle the blazes as the cameras capture the violators with smirks of glee plastered upon their perverted faces.

How many times have you heard the talking heads say something like this concerning a promising young Black star?

“He has great physical tools, but he needs to be smarter.” Or when Black athletes make a play, something along this line jumps out of a talking head’s mouth: “Now that skill can’t be taught. If he can master coach so-andso’s system, man, he can be great.”

No system made O.J. Simpson, Barry Sanders, Tony Dorsett, Jerome Bettis, Jim Brown, Franco Harris and Eric Dickerson Hall-of-Fame running backs. The only thing that could ever be watered down was their market value as far as salaries are concerned. There is no lost legacy for Black athletes as far as Euro-American professional sports is concerned. African American athletes never had a legacy in the first place.

The song, "Everything Must Change," was recorded on Quincy Jones’ 1974 album, "Body Heat."

The song was a prophet-

ic and haunting referral to the caste system of American society as well as professional sports, yesterday, today and tomorrow. The lyrics are: “Everything must change.

Nothing stays the same.

Everyone will change. No one stays the same. The young become the old, and mysteries do unfold.

‘Cause that’s the way of time, nothing and no one goes unchanged. There are not many things in life. You can be sure of, except rain comes from the clouds. Sun lights up the sky. And hummingbirds do fly.”

According to various history-based websites, “The caste system in India has existed for roughly 3,000– 3,500 years, with its earliest foundations emerging during the Vedic period around 1500–1000 BCE.” Now if societies exist that are biased against their own race for thousands of years, what gives you or I the audacity to think racial bias in America can be erased in less than 500 years, by the stroke of a pen or scoring a touchdown?

For generations, the national conversation about Black economic progress has followed a familiar script. We debate educational attainment, workforce participation, entrepreneurship and voting rights as though each represents the next frontier of equality. These conversations matter.

They have reshaped public policy, dismantled legal barriers and expanded opportunity in ways that would have seemed unimaginable to previous generations. Yet they often overlook a quieter question, one that has shaped American prosperity for centuries—who owns the assets that appreciate while everyone else is working?

The question is not merely academic. It goes to the heart of how wealth is created in the United States. Income provides security, but ownership creates permanence. A paycheck pays today’s ex-

ANTHONY O. KELLUM penses; appreciating assets finance tomorrow’s opportunities. That distinction has always mattered, but it carries particular significance for Black Americans because our history is not simply one of exclusion from opportunity. It is also a history of exclusion from ownership.

For much of American history, Black Americans were denied meaningful access to the country’s most powerful engine of wealth creation property.

Redlining restricted where Black families could purchase homes. Federal housing policies helped millions of White families build equity while routinely excluding Black households from the same opportunities. Restrictive covenants, discriminatory lending practices and unequal access to mortgage credit did more than separate neighborhoods. They separated generations of Black families from decades of appreciation that quietly transformed homeownership into the foundation of middle-class wealth.

Those laws have largely disappeared. Their consequences have not.

Today, the Black homeownership rate remains well below that of White households, and the racial wealth gap remains one of the most persistent features of the American economy. It is tempting to explain these disparities through the language of personal responsibility or changing market conditions. Certainly, individual decisions matter. But those explanations alone cannot account for gaps that have persisted across generations.

A more convincing explanation is that ownership compounds, and exclusion compounds with it.

Alexander Karp — $13.4 Billion: Alexander Karp tops the 2026 billionaire rankings through his leadership of Palantir Technologies, a software company specializing in artificial intelligence and big data analytics for governments and Fortune 500 companies. Under Karp’s leadership, Palantir has become one of America’s fastest-growing technology firms, employing thousands of engineers, software developers and cybersecurity professionals while advancing AI innovation worldwide.

David Steward — $12.4 Billion: David Steward is one of America’s wealthiest Black businessmen and founder of World Wide Technology (WWT). Starting with just a handful of employees in 1990, Steward built WWT into a global technology integration powerhouse generating billions in annual revenue. The company employs more than 10,000 people worldwide and has become a model for minority entrepreneurship.

Steward has also invested heavily in education, workforce development and faith-based initiatives, mentoring countless aspiring business leaders.

Robert F. Smith — $10 Billion: Private equity investor Robert F. Smith transformed Vista Equity Partners into one of the world’s premier technology investment firms. Smith oversees investments in hundreds of software companies employing tens of thousands of workers globally. AI is a powerful money tool—but don’t let it become your financial adviser Artificial intelligence is changing how we live, work and manage money.

People are using AI to create budgets, compare investments, estimate retirement needs, prepare taxes and even ask whether they can afford to buy a house.

It is available 24 hours a day, never gets tired and responds in seconds.

Sounds like the perfect financial adviser, right? Not so fast.

A recent study published in the Journal of Financial Planning tested seven popular AI platforms—including ChatGPT, Claude, Copilot, Gemini, DeepSeek, Meta AI and Perplexity—using real-life personal finance questions.

Researchers found that the advice was inconsistent, sometimes biased and, in some cases, flat-out wrong.

That should make every consumer pump the brakes before trusting AI with major financial decisions.

As a financial planner, money coach and tax professional, I use AI regularly. It is a powerful productivity tool that can organize information, generate ideas, summarize reports and simplify complicated topics.

But here is what I tell people: AI is a tool—not the real deal.

AI Doesn’t Know You The biggest weakness of artificial intelligence is not that it lacks information. It is that it lacks understanding.

There is an old saying from when computers first became popular: “Garbage in, garbage out.”

It means a computer can only process the information it is given.

If the data going into the system is incomplete, inaccurate or garbage, the result coming out may be garbage, too. The same thing applies to AI. AI processes information based on the prompt you give it. The problem is you don’t know what you don’t know.

You may ask a question based on your limited knowledge and understanding.

AI will then provide an answer based primarily on the information contained in your prompt.

It may answer the part without un-

derstanding how that part affects the whole—your complete financial situation.

For example, you might ask AI: “How much should I save for retirement?”

AI will give you an answer. It may calculate a savings goal using your age, income and expected retirement date.

The response may sound detailed, intelligent and convincing.

But what information did you leave out?

Maybe you have a pension. Maybe your home will be paid off before you retire.

Maybe you plan to move to a state with a higher cost of living. Maybe you expect to care for your grandchildren. Maybe you have a child with special needs who will continue depending on you financially.

Maybe you plan to work part-time during retirement, sell a business or receive an inheritance.

Every one of those variables could

completely change the recommendation.

That is the danger.

AI doesn’t know your financial history, goals, fears, family responsibilities, health concerns, personal values or risk tolerance unless you explain them. Even then, it can misunderstand your circumstances or overlook a critical detail.

Financial planning is not about solving one isolated problem. It is about understanding how all the pieces work together.

The Same Question Produced Different Answers Researchers asked each AI platform identical questions about emergency savings, retirement withdrawals and investment allocation.

Instead of reaching similar conclusions, the programs produced significantly different recommendations.

Earvin “Magic” Johnson — $1.6 Billion: Magic Johnson successfully transitioned from NBA legend to one of America’s most accomplished businessmen.

Through Magic Johnson Enterprises, he invested in movie theaters, restaurants, sports franchises, insurance companies and real estate projects, particularly in underserved urban communities often overlooked by major investors. Calendly has created hundreds of technology jobs while demonstrating how immigrant entrepreneurs continue driving American innovation.

LeBron James — $1.4 Billion: LeBron James became the first active NBA player to achieve billionaire status through basketball earnings, endorsements, SpringHill Company, media production, investments and ownership stakes. Beyond business, James founded the I PROMISE School in Akron, Ohio, and has invested millions in education, workforce development, and community revitalization, while creating opportunities for filmmakers, athletes, and entrepreneurs.

Tyler Perry — $1.4 Billion: Tyler Perry built one of the world’s largest independent film and television studios from the ground up. Tyler Perry Studios has become a major employer in Georgia’s entertainment industry, creating thousands of jobs for actors, directors, writers, production crews and technical professionals.

Perry is equally known for his philanthropy, frequently assisting families facing hardship, supporting HBCUs and helping launch the careers of numerous Black actors and filmmakers. “I have made more Black millionaires—hear me when I say this—than any studio in this city combined because I’m making footprints,” said Perry at the 2025 BET Awards.

Sheila Johnson — $1.2 Billion: Sheila Johnson made history as the first Black female billionaire after co-founding Black Entertainment Television (BET). She later expanded into hospitality, professional sports ownership and luxury resorts

through Salamander Collection. Johnson has consistently championed women-owned businesses, arts organizations and educational causes while creating employment opportunities in hospitality, tourism and media. Today, she is worth more than her ex-husband Robert Johnson because she continued to grow her fortune after the BET sale, while he made several investments that produced smaller returns or reduced his net worth.

A Legacy Bigger Than Wealth The rise of today’s billionaires reflects a remarkable transformation that began with Madam C.J. Walker’s vision more than a century ago. While their fortunes were built in different industries—from software and private equity to entertainment and professional sports—their influence extends far beyond personal wealth.

Collectively, these entrepreneurs have created hundreds of thousands of jobs, launched businesses, revitalized communities, funded scholarships, invested in historically Black colleges and universities, supported medical research and inspired millions to pursue entrepreneurship and ownership. Their success demonstrates a broader shift in the American economy, in which Black excellence is increasingly shaping industries once largely inaccessible to African Americans.

From Walker’s pioneering beauty empire in 1910 to today’s multibillion-dollar global enterprises, the story of Black wealth is ultimately one of resilience, innovation and opportunity. It is a reminder that true success is measured not only by dollars accumulated, but by lives changed, communities strengthened, and doors opened for those who follow.

sional achievement and hard work. Those remain essential ingredients of economic mobility. Yet they are not, by themselves, the principal engines of wealth creation in America.

The American economy has always rewarded ownership more generously than labor.

Wages are earned once, assets appreciate repeatedly. One produces income; the other produces leverage.

This is why the story of American wealth is, at its core, a story about property.

For most middle-class families, a home is far more than shelter. It is the largest asset they will ever own and, in many cases, the first opportunity to convert monthly payments into long-term equity. Over time, appreciation expands a family’s financial capacity in ways that wages alone rarely can. Equity finances college education, provides collateral to launch businesses, creates a cushion during economic downturns and becomes an inheritance that allows the next generation to begin life with advantages their parents never had.

Viewed through that lens, some of the most consequential public policies in American history were not simply about separating Black Americans from White Americans. They were about separating Black Americans from ownership. Redlin-

ing did not merely determine where Black families could live; it determined where they could accumulate equity. Restrictive covenants did not simply organize neighborhoods; they influenced which communities would appreciate and which would remain undervalued. Discriminatory lending practices did not merely deny mortgages; they denied participation in one of the greatest periods of wealth creation in modern American history.

The laws changed. The mathematics did not.

Much of today’s public conversation about racial inequality still focuses on income, educational attainment and employment. Those discussions are necessary, but they sometimes obscure a more fundamental divide: the difference between earning and owning. A physician earning a substantial salary while renting for thirty years may ultimately accumulate less wealth than a family with a more modest income that purchased a home decades earlier in a neighborhood that steadily appreciated. The comparison is not intended to diminish education or professional success. It illustrates a larger truth about how wealth actually accumulates. Ownership changes the equation because ownership allows time to work on behalf of the owner.

That reality should shape how we think about the future of Black economic progress.

The Black middle class has never been more educated or professionally accomplished than it is today. Black Americans lead Fortune 500 companies, serve on federal courts, teach at the nation’s leading universities, build innovative businesses and occupy positions that previous generations could scarcely imagine. These achievements deserve recognition. They represent extraordinary progress against barriers that once seemed immovable.

Yet professional advancement has not translated into proportional gains in household wealth. One reason is that income grows incrementally while assets compound exponentially. Families that purchased homes decades ago often experienced appreciation that exceeded what they could have accumulated through wages alone. Those gains became down payments for larger homes, capital for businesses, financial protection during recessions and inheritances for children and grandchildren.

Families excluded from those same opportunities lost more than property. They lost time.

And in investing, time is often the most valuable asset because compounding rewards patience over generations.

This is why the conversation about Black advancement should evolve beyond access.

Access remains essential.

Equal opportunity remains non-negotiable. Strong civil

rights protections, fair lending laws, quality education and equitable public investment continue to matter profoundly. But history suggests that access, by itself, does not guarantee wealth. Ownership does.

That may be the defining economic challenge of the twenty-first century. The twentieth century was rightly devoted to securing equal rights under the law. The next chapter must be equally committed to expanding participation in wealth creation. That means encouraging sustainable homeownership, strengthening financial literacy around equity and leverage, supporting Black developers and Black-owned financial institutions, and teaching young professionals that the first appreciating asset they acquire may shape their family’s future more profoundly than the first prestigious title they earn.

Ownership is not simply a private financial decision, it is a civic one. Communities with higher rates of ownership tend to exercise greater influence over their schools, their neighborhoods and their local economies because owners possess both a financial stake and a generational stake in the future of the places they call home. They are not simply residents; they are investors in the long-term success of their communities.

Governments will change.

Presidents will come and go.

Tax codes will be rewritten.

Markets will expand and contract. Interest rates will rise and fall. Those cycles are inevitable. But families who own appreciating assets possess something that is less vulnerable to political change. The family that purchased a home twenty-five years ago benefited from decades of appreciation regardless of which party controlled Washington. Public policy mattered. Economic cycles mattered. Yet ownership created something more durable than political certainty. It created equity, leverage and the capacity to transfer opportunity from one generation to the next.

For generations, Black Americans fought courageously for access to the American promise.

That struggle transformed the nation and remains unfinished.

But perhaps the next chapter requires asking a different question. Not simply whether Black Americans have access to opportunity, but whether they are building ownership in the assets that shape the nation’s wealth.

the question. That is not the consistency people should expect when making life-changing financial decisions.

The Bias Nobody Expected Perhaps the most troubling finding came when researchers changed only one variable.

The income stayed the same. The debt stayed the same. The savings stayed the same. The goals stayed the same. The only thing that changed was the person’s race or gender.

Some AI platforms gave women and Black households different emergency savings or investment recommendations than White male households with identical financial profiles. Think about that.

Same numbers. Different advice.

Over several decades, small differences in investment recommendations can produce major differences in wealth accumulation.

Technology learns from information created by humans. If the data used to train AI contains outdated assumptions, incomplete history or human bias, those weaknesses can show up in its answers.

Computers are not automatically objective simply because they run on code.

Confidence Isn’t Competence One reason AI can be convincing is because it sounds confident.

It can produce a polished, professional

answer in seconds. It may use detailed explanations, financial terminology and language that sounds authoritative.

But sounding smart is not the same as being right.

AI can present outdated information, overlook exceptions or invent details while sounding completely confident.

That becomes dangerous when people ask whether they should claim Social Security early, refinance a mortgage, convert an IRA, borrow from a 401(k), cash out a pension or file taxes jointly or separately.

These decisions cannot be answered properly with a generic rule. Miss one important variable and the recommendation can change completely.

AI Has No Fiduciary Duty There is another major difference between AI and a qualified financial professional: Accountability.

Some financial advisers operate under a fiduciary standard, meaning they are required to act in their clients’ best interests. Qualified professionals can also be held accountable for negligent or improper advice.

AI has no such responsibility.

If a chatbot gives you bad advice and you lose $50,000, it will not sit across the table and help you rebuild. It will not lose a professional license. It will not face your family. It will not accept responsi-

bility.

AI has no skin in the game.

Financial planning is not simply about producing an answer. It is about understanding the consequences of that answer.

Where AI Shines Let us be fair. AI does many things extremely well.

It can explain financial concepts in plain English, summarize lengthy reports, generate budgeting worksheets, compare financial terms and help you prepare thoughtful questions before meeting with a financial professional.

That is exactly how consumers should use it.

Think of AI like GPS. GPS can help you navigate, but it does not decide your destination. Sometimes it even sends you down the wrong road. You still have to pay attention and remain responsible for driving.

Use AI to Learn—Not to Decide Use AI to improve your financial literacy. Ask it to explain compound interest.

Learn the difference between a Roth IRA and Traditional IRA. Understand how credit scores work. Practice creating a budget. Generate questions to ask your financial planner, tax professional, accountant or attorney.

But when it is time to make major decisions involving retirement, taxes, investments, insurance, debt or estate

planning, verify the information and consult someone who understands your complete financial picture. Information without verification can become financial devastation.

The Bottom Line Artificial intelligence is here to stay, and it will continue getting better. I believe AI will become one of the most valuable financial tools consumers have ever had.

But notice the word I used. Tool.

Not adviser.

Not planner.

Not fiduciary.

Not decision-maker.

Technology can calculate numbers, organize information and generate possibilities.

It cannot replace wisdom, experience, accountability or personalized financial planning.

Use AI to research. Use AI to brainstorm. Use AI to become a smarter consumer. Then consult a qualified professional before making decisions that could affect your retirement, your children and your family’s legacy.

Your financial future deserves more than a confident answer from a chatbot.

It deserves a sound financial plan.

Blessed to still have acts of kindness

Guest Editorial Birthright citizenship is the promise of America As America prepared to celebrate its 250th birthday, the U.S. Supreme Court delivered a timely reminder of what has made this nation exceptional for nearly two and a half centuries: our Constitution still matters. By reaffirming birthright citizenship and rejecting the Trump administration’s attempt to deny citizenship to children born on American soil, the Court did more than resolve a legal dispute. It defended one of the nation’s most enduring promises.

The Fourteenth Amendment could not be clearer: “All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States.”

For more than 150 years, that simple declaration has embodied the principle that America is defined not by bloodlines or ancestry but by constitutional values. The Court rightly refused to allow that principle to be rewritten by executive order.

The Trump administration’s position was offensive not only because it challenged settled constitutional law but also because it sought to create distinct classes of Americans based on their parents’ immigration status. That is a dangerous proposition.

Moreover, American citizenship should never depend on political convenience or shifting ideological winds.

The irony of this debate is impossible to ignore. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio is an American citizen because he was born in Miami, even though his Cuban-born parents were not U.S. citizens at the time of his birth. Under the very theory advanced

by The White House, countless Americans whose families have contributed immeasurably to this nation—including prominent public servants, military personnel, entrepreneurs, educators, and community leaders—could have had their citizenship questioned.

That is not the America envisioned by the framers of the Fourteenth Amendment.

Birthright citizenship has never been about rewarding illegal immigration. It has always been about protecting children’s constitutional rights and preventing the government from deciding who is “American enough.” It establishes a clear, fair, and equal rule that has served the nation well for generations.

As fireworks lit the skies on July 4, not only here in Washington, D.C., but across the United States, to commemorate America’s 250th anniversary, this decision was equally worthy of celebration. It reminded us that our greatest strength lies not in excluding people but in remaining faithful to the Constitution.

The U.S. Supreme Court has preserved a principle that has welcomed generations of Americans into our national family. At a moment when the country is seeking reasons to believe in its founding ideals, this was a victory for every citizen.

(TriceEdneyWire.com)—When Barack Obama became our President, some of us began to believe our nation was on its way to approaching equal rights for all where most of us had a chance to become whatever we chose to work for. Some of us began to be comfortable with the idea that our children and grandchildren could become whatever they were willing to work for. They were becoming leaders at all kinds of places. They were having opportunities that we could not even dream we could ever have.

For a while, we didn’t have to read about so many murders of our children. They didn’t witness the worst of America’s leaders from the top down using vulgar language, hearing about the highest ranking public officials raping women and not even serving time in jail for it!

We didn’t hear about Presidents in such an ugly way talking about their predecessors, using profanity during hours young people were up trying to concentrate on their studies. We didn’t witness a President ignoring court orders such as taking down his name from the President John F. Kennedy Center.

He’s still ignoring the order, and with another act of defiance of a court order, he placed a tarp over the space so no one would know the court order has not yet been obeyed or at least he keeps us believing that covering both his and President Kennedy’s name is what

Commentary the court ordered, while he tries to figure out how to disobey the Court and leave his name there!

How Americans tolerate this man continuing to occupy our White House by disobeying every rule, every law, every practice followed for years without disobeying judges— and now he even disobeys Supreme Court orders without punishment!

How do we teach our children to obey laws?

It’s no wonder many young people don’t feel they have to obey laws, do things reminiscent of many years past and think nothing of killing a young man by the name of Nolan Wells in Mississippi. I thank God for an athlete who has been cheated out of his chances to go as far as his talent would take him, yet show his thoughtfulness by intervening and paying for seeking justice for young Nolan Wells.

Before Nolan Wells, there was Karmelo Anthony from Texas who was cheated out of a fair trial.

Every possibility was denied him when certain witnesses who likely would have told a different story about what happened in the tragedy. Karmelo who was a senior in

high school when he was convicted under questionable circumstances.

He was given 35 years in prison and sent there immediately from the courtroom at the end of the trial.

In response to Karmelo’s tragedy, we’ve seen other acts of kindness when Attorneys Russell Wilson11, Sean Moore, Brooke Cluse, (from Ben Crump’s Law Firm), Sean Dredia, and Justin Moore are handling his appeal against the conviction.

They are conducting an independent review of the trial record to identify any legal errors there appear to be. I don’t believe so many lawyers of the caliber of this group would offer their services pro bono if they didn’t already see certain actions believed to be errors that denied Anthony a fair trial.

It seems that in many ways we’ve returned to the years when a Black person had no rights that a White man had to respect. It’s a tragedy that after the blood, sweat, tears and lives of so many people, we are brought back to where we were many years ago We need more than Black people and a few others to show their humanity and not leave decency in this country to Black people alone who’ve already been denied so much. Everyday, I’m left to wonder where some of my non-Black friends are on confronting—what we have today!

The Bicentennial was healing. ‘Freedom 250’ was a narcissistic embarrasment.

“The 1976 celebration was a more vital and happy one because of a broad belief that two years earlier the system had worked, and we were celebrating a system that had cleansed itself. We were in a period of renewal and relief, and today we’re in a period of fear and loathing. We don’t have any reason to celebrate our founding documents, because we’re living in an authoritarian state that is quite different from the one that the founders created.” -- Jonathan Alter In a proclamation declaring 1976 The Bicentennial Year, President Ford called upon “every man, woman, and child to celebrate the diversity of tradition, culture and heritage that reflects our people and our patrimony.”

A half century later, President Trump used the occasion of the nation’s 250th anniversary to celebrate Trump.

In 2016, a bipartisan act of Congress created the United States Semiquincentennial Commission, branded America250, to “foster shared experiences that spark imagination, showcase the rich tapestry of our American stories, inspire service in our communities, honor the enduring strength, and celebrate the resilience of the United States of America”.

In 2025, the Trump administration began diverting funds intended for the nonpartisan commission to “Freedom 250,” a public–private partnership through which donors

To Be Equal could purchase access to Trump and millions of dollars could be funneled to Trump allies. Among the events it produced were an IndyCar street race around the National Mall and a mixed martial arts combat event on the White House lawn.

On July 5, 1976, President Ford addressed newly naturalized Americans in Virginia: “‘Black is beautiful’ was a motto of genius which uplifted us far above its intention.

Once Americans had thought about it and perceived its truth, we began to realize that so are brown, white, red, and yellow beautiful ... You came as strangers among us and you leave here as citizens, equal in fundamental rights, equal before the law, with an equal share in the promise of the future.”

In a speech to open the sparsely-attended Great American State Fair, Trump denigrated immigrants as “murderers, gang members, drug dealers, and dangerous criminals” and bragged about eliminating racial justice initiatives.

In 1976, the nation was struggling to recover from one of the most notorious episodes of presidential

corruption in our history up to that point: a political espionage program, illegally funded by donor contributions, which the Nixon administration tried to cover up by destroying evidence, obstructing investigators, and bribing burglars.

The bipartisan resolve with which Congress confronted the Watergate scandal seems unthinkable today.

Not only did a congressional committee vote unanimously to subpoena audiotapes that exposed the President’s guilt, members of the President’s own party stood ready to vote not only for his impeachment, but for his conviction, and urged him to resign.

But the reforms passed in the wake of the scandal did not anticipate a future president willing to flout institutional norms and test the limits of every available safeguard.

In his Bicentennial speech, Ford asked, “Are the institutions under which we live working the way they should? Are the foundations laid in 1776 and 1789 still strong enough and sound enough to resist the tremors of our times? Are our God-given rights secure, our hardwon liberties protected?”

Fifty years later, these questions no longer sound like a celebration of American resilience—they stand as an urgent test of whether our democracy can still summon the courage, accountability, and civic faith that once enabled it to correct its own course.

The rape of America Let me be clear from the beginning. There are no sexual connotations to this commentary. Merriam Webster also has this definition for rape: “An outrageous violation.” In plain words, this commentary is about our country and the American people getting poorer while Donald John Trump, his family, and his cronies get richer.

Trump talks about the inability to maintain Social Security and Medicare for the elderly; Medicaid for low-income adults, children and seniors and people with disabilities; and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) for families under the poverty level. Now we know why. Trump is spending our tax dollars on himself and his desires. On April 1 of this year at a private Easter luncheon, Trump stated, “It’s not possible for us to take care of daycare, Medicaid, Medicare, all these individual things… You can’t do it on a federal {basis}. We have to take care of one thing: military protection…” further stating that the states should pay for these programs while the federal government prioritizes military spending. In fact, Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill” cut funding for both SNAP and Medicaid.

However, after stating that the federal government has no money to spend on taking care of American children or health care for our poor, disabled, or seniors, Trump asked Congress for additional funding, ranging between $400 million and $1 billion, for White House “securi-

Commentary ty enhancements” including a military bunker and the ballroom that he said would be funded entirely by private funds. Trump doesn’t think that the health of the American people is as important as gilding statues for $5.1 million or renovating the Lincoln Memorial reflecting pool at a cost of $16 million, or building his 250-foot “triumphal arch” near Arlington National Cemetery for $100 million.

The U.S. House Committee on Oversight tracks the money that Trump and his family have arguably secured from digital schemes, foreign payments, and corporate interests amounting to $2.25 billion and, according to media accounts, if all illiquid digital assets are included, the number could be closer to $10 billion. Meanwhile Fox Business reports that the federal budget deficit for 2026 through the first nine months of the fiscal year was $1.373 trillion. The cost of Trump’s golden ballroom which is up to $600 million is now predicted to be borne in half by the American people. The gifted Qatar plane is predicted to cost the American people about $400 million for security retrofitting, and Trump’s golf-re-

lated travel, by media reports, has cost the American people $101.2 million already. Totaling direct military spending and the economic and consumer burden, some economists have estimated that Trump’s Iran war (which Trump has predicted to be over or almost over dozens of times) has cost the American people approximately $150 billion or $1,100 per household. Mr. Trump, you are using our tax dollars like they are in your own personal piggy bank.

Perhaps Mr. Trump, you should read the Preamble to the United States Constitution which states that “We the People” ordained and established the Constitution to “establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity.” Nowhere in the Constitution does it state that the purpose is to enrich the President and his family, surround the President with gilded ballrooms and statues, or build arches to glorify him. After you read the Preamble, Mr. Trump, then read Article II which outlines the executive powers. You have overstepped the articulated powers.

Finally, Mr. Trump, read the Tenth Amendment which states, “The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States, respectively, or to the people.” Mr. Trump, stop raping our country.

The stores are selling backpacks and dorm décor, but the deeper question is who gets access to education, who must borrow for it, and which institutions continue to carry the burden of Black possibility.

The fireworks have dimmed, and the Fourth-of-YouLie sales are waning. In this country, we commemorate through commerce and celebrate through retail activity, so even though we are just a few days into July, back-toschool signs are already shouting from store windows and websites.

Who is going back to school, and under what circumstances?

As with every milestone in this country, inequality roars. Some students will return to school with new laptops, quiet rooms, family-paid tuition, and networks that cushion every stumble. Others will return carrying debt, doubt, family obligations, food insecurity, transportation challenges, and the accumulated disadvantages of underfunded schools and under-resourced communities.

The back-to-school season is marketed as a fresh start.

For too many students, it is also a reminder that opportunity in America has always been rationed.

That is why Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) still matter. Indeed, that is why HBCUs remain the vanguard.

Commentary army. It is the front edge. It moves first. It absorbs blows.

It clears the path. By that definition, HBCUs have always been the vanguard. They were built because this country’s higher education system excluded Black people by law, custom, violence, and contempt. Their founding question was not, “How do we reproduce privilege?”

Their founding question was, “How do we cultivate genius where America has refused to see it?”

That question remains urgent.

HBCUs enroll only a fraction of Black college students, but their impact is outsized. In 2022, HBCUs enrolled about 9 percent of Black college students, yet they produced 16 percent of the bachelor’s degrees earned by Black students in 2021–22. UNCF reports that HBCUs generate $16.5 billion in annual economic impact, support more than 136,000 jobs, and that the 2021 HBCU graduating class is projected to earn $146 billion over their lifetimes.

These are not sentimental institutions. They are economic engines, leadership factories, and community anchors.

Still, HBCUs are too often asked to do transformative work with transactional support.

That contradiction is especially sharp now, as federal student loan policy shifts under the feet of students and families. The Biden-era SAVE plan—Saving on a Valuable Education—was designed to make repayment less punishing by tying payments to income and family size, reducing monthly payments for many borrowers, limiting runaway interest, and creating a shorter forgiveness path for some small-balance borrowers. Now SAVE has ended, and millions of borrowers have been told to move into other repayment plans.

The change lands first on borrowers already in repayment, but current students are not untouched. Undergraduates will face a narrower repayment landscape when they leave school. Families will confront new Parent PLUS limits. Graduate and professional students will face new borrowing caps just as advanced credentials remain expensive and often necessary. Graduate PLUS loans, which previously allowed many graduate students to borrow up to the cost of attendance, are being phased out for new borrowers. Grad PLUS was the backstop many students used when tuition and living costs exceeded unsubsidized loan limits.

These numbers are not abstractions. They determine who can become a nurse practitioner, a physical therapist, a psychologist, a professor, a public health leader, a lawyer, a dentist, a physician, or a minister. They determine who can move from the first degree to the next rung. They determine whether talent is nurtured or stranded.

For Black students, the stakes are higher because the debt burden is heavier. Black students are more likely to borrow for college, more likely to borrow more, and more likely to struggle in repayment because the racial wealth gap follows them from home to campus and from campus to workplace. A loan policy that may look race-neutral on paper can still deepen racial inequality in practice.

That is the context in which HBCUs do their work.

They educate students through inequality, against inequality, and beyond inequality. They do not merely polish privilege. They cultivate possibility. They take seriously the students America too often treats as afterthoughts, and they turn potential into leadership.

Having led an HBCU, I know both the miracle, the math, and the myth. At Bennett College, I saw daily what HBCUs do with too little: stretch dollars, nurture brilliance, hold students close, and insist that Black women’s futures were worth fighting for. I know the devotion of faculty, the exhaustion of administrators, the anxiety of families, and the constant scramble for resources. I also know this: HBCUs cannot be praised in February and underfunded in July. They cannot be applauded at commencements and ignored in appropriations. They cannot be celebrated as cultural treasures while their students are left to navigate a debt system that punishes aspiration.

The country loves the symbolism of back-to-school season. New backpacks. New notebooks. New slogans. But the real question is not what is on sale, it’s what is at stake.

If HBCUs are the vanguard, then the question is not whether they have earned our admiration. They have.

The question is whether they will receive the investment, protection, and respect that their record demands.

Back to school should not mean back to debt, back to rationed opportunity, or back to the same old inequalities dressed up in fresh retail packaging. It should mean back to possibility. Back to purpose. Back to institutions that have carried us when the broader society would not.

HBCUs are still carrying us. The question is whether public policy will finally carry its share.

Solving the ‘clearance rate crisis’ is a fool’s errand?

Decade after decade progressives and conservatives argued over whether systemic factors or cultural dysfunctions were more detrimental to Black communities. The problem with this debate was that the two sides always talked past each other.

Four years ago, Bad Faith podcast host Briahna Joy Gray, who was also the national press secretary for Bernie Sanders’s 2020 presidential campaign, debated Brown University economics professor Glenn Loury about whether racial disparities are caused by culture.

According to Loury, there was a great deal of overlap between systemic factors and cultural dysfunction. Gray maintained that it was a mistake for conservatives to put resolving cultural issues ahead of eliminating systemic factors. According to Gray, trying to overcome racial disparities by first changing the culture of any group is a “fool’s errand.”

The “clearance rate crisis” can help us determine if Gray was right.

The Murder Channel’s senior writer and investigative journalist Larry Katz wrote an article titled “The Clearance Rate Crisis: Why Half of All Murders Go Unsolved” in March.

The national homicide clearance rate, which calculates the proportion of solved cases, has been declining for decades, according to Katz. Authorities cleared more than 90 percent of homicides in the 1960s. The national average currently stands at about 50 percent.

Black homicide rates are six times higher than White rates (20.6 per 100,000), Black offending rates are seven times higher than White rates (26.5 per 100,000), and 94 percent of Black victims are killed

by Black offenders, according to the most recent comprehensive data compiled by theglobalstatistics. com. Black men between the ages of 18 and 24 are the group most at risk.

Katz stated, “Here is the most uncomfortable fact in homicide clearance research: cases involving Black victims are cleared at significantly lower rates than cases involving White victims. Multiple analyses have found that cities across the US clear homicides involving White victims at roughly twice the rate as those involving Black victims.”

Katz concluded that the racial disparity reflects broader patterns

Check It Out of resource allocation, geography, and investigative priority. In other words, these racial disparities are the result of systemic failure.

Let’s examine Katz’s explanations for the decline in clearance rates in more detail.

The witness problem. Many homicides occur in communities with historically adversarial relationships with police. Fear of retaliation and distrust of law enforcement reduces witness cooperation. Most homicide cases go cold without witnesses.

Resources and staffing. Homicide units in major cities are chronically understaffed. Detectives carry caseloads that would have been unthinkable a generation ago. When a new killing happens, an older case gets deprioritized.

The shift in homicide geography.

Decades ago, homicides were more often crimes of passion—domestic disputes, bar fights—where the perpetrator was known to the victim and often obvious to investigators.

Today, more homicides are stranger-to-stranger events tied to drug markets or interpersonal conflicts, which are structurally harder to solve.

Within these reasons there is what Professor Loury described as cultural overlap.

Black progressives don’t acknowledge the overlap because they see culture as the “complex whole” of knowledge, belief, art, morals, and customs that distinguish a group of people, and they feel obligated to protect their Black cultural heritage from stereotypes and degradation.

Black conservatives, on the other hand, are not referring to the “complex whole” of “Black culture” but counterproductive subcultures that individuals embrace.

The core issue, which Katz failed to address, is “gang culture,” particularly in relation to “drug markets” and “witness intimidation.”

The predominance of “gang culture” creates a “culture of silence” in which potential witnesses will not cooperate with the police, but this problem is exacerbated when

Black residents do not trust law enforcement due to the “culture of corruption” inside police departments.

It’s not just Black conservatives who focus on subcultures.

Ten years ago, prominent Black progressive author Ta-Nehisi Coates had a conversation with New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu, a pragmatic and moderate Democrat. Their discussion centered around these disturbing statistics: Between 1980 and 2015, over 630,000 Americans have been killed; that’s close to the same number of Americans killed in both World Wars, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. Half of the 630,000 were Black Americans, who are only 13 percent of the population. In New Orleans, there were between 150 and 200 murders per year, which was eight times the national average. 95 percent of victims were Black Americans, aged 16-25, and 88 percent knew each other.

As New Orleans’ mayor, Landrieu was already aware of all the systemic factors that disproportionately impacted the city’s low-income districts, but he stressed that the “culture of violence” that afflicts these regions needed to be addressed.

It’s crucial to remember that Landrieu did not claim that “Black culture” is violent.

He described the “culture of violence” as a “pattern of behavior that developed over time that has produced a certain result, over and over again, becoming a normative action for some people.”

Coates disagreed with Landrieu’s wording. He defended “Black culture” by praising it as a “culture of self-preservation.” Then he said no one should be shocked by the murder rate given the poor condition of these Black neighborhoods. When the moderator of the discussion asked Coates if he assumed this “culture of violence” existed among certain members of Black communities, how does society break the cycle?

Coates replied that the solution was simple: It requires the destruction of White supremacy in this country.

Coates prioritized the impractical while Landrieu focused on the practical, and if prioritizing the practical is a “fool’s errand,” then Black neighborhoods need more fools than progressives.

Here is what we can do between now and Nov. 3, and beyond We have on the calendar some 100-odd days until the US national election scheduled for November 3.

Trump has said the elections are not necessary. US congresswoman Maxine Waters said Trump “is just itching to invoke Marital Law.” That would terminate the November 3 election.

Let the next 100 days find us in Homewood, in Pittsburgh, in Allegheny County and across Pennsylvania’s 12th US congressional district building an African American political power base in Homewood, in Pittsburgh, in Allegheny County, in PA 12 and all across the national Black community.

We are in the middle of a very dangerous political struggle. See the National Urban League “State of Black America 2025.”

We must plan our own strategies and implement them. Voter registration is key and immediate.

But more precise is Get Out The Black Vote, GOTBV. GOTBV is a mobilized, educated, organized, and engaged African American electorate. It is not just “African Americans Vote!” “Vote” for who, Donald Trump, vote for Mark Robinson, vote for Hershel Walker?

What does a local GOTBV campaign look like? Meet the candidate’s forums, candidate’s rallies, yard signs, and motorcades in the streets are absolute to GOTBV. What does the data say about recent voter turnout in Black enclaves like Pittsburgh’s 5th, 12th, and 13th Wards? Overall, 22 percent of eligible Allegany County voters participated in the recent May 19 primaries. We must critical-

In addition, we must build a very vibrant African American Community Information Network in PA 12.

We must communicate with ourselves the local African American community and the national Black community. Newsletters both on line and hard copy, forums, meetings virtual and in-person, public and private are essential components of the network.

The PA 12 Black community is in motion. But what for example does the Homewood community know about its next door neighbor to the south Wilkinsburg, or in East Hills, or Lincoln Larimer to the west, or Penn Hills on the north? Or to tell it like it is, about what’s going on across Homewood? We must have that network!

Local Black elected officials should feel obligated to convene periodic town hall meetings to keep their constituents informed and engaged.

In this very intense and dangerous era, we must create several Black Political Action Committees in PA 12. PACs can engage in partisan politics with resources and most of all with people.

In this very dangerous era, Black-funded Black Foundations are essential. The Black community

has a very long and extremely important, but suppressed history of fundraising and mutual support.

For example, Callie House’s National Ex-Slave Mutual Relief, Bounty and Pension Association had some 300,000 members in the early 20th Century before the Garvey Movement.

However, as the late Dr. Robert S. Browne reminded us, “While it is true that Blacks, as a matter of right or reparations, are entitled to all of the public tax money, foundation money, and church and corporations contributions they can get their hands on, this argument is often used to excuse ourselves from supporting worthy black organizations” and projects. We must do that.

We must also raise the level of Black struggle for African American cooperatives which also have a very long and extremely important, but suppressed history. See, Collective Courage: A History of African American Cooperative Economic Thought and Practice by Dr. Jessica Cordon Nembhard, also W.E.B. DuBois’ brief important discussion in Dusk of Dawn.

We must have the political infrastructure power base of Think Tanks, PACs and so on to plan and implement our strategies.

Of course, all of this is nothing new. It is as old as the Black struggle for freedom in American.

Trumpism force us to face the reality of the moment. Now, you check on your calendar and clock the exact number of months, week, days, hours, minute and second until November 3.

SERVICE DEVELOPMENT INTERN ($16 PER HOUR) Pittsburgh Regional Transit is seeking a Service Development Intern to support the Port Authority of Allegheny County d/b/a Pittsburgh Regional Transit (PRT) short- and medium-term transit planning activities, including the Bus Line Redesign project, case study, and peer agency research, annual reporting requirements, and cross-agency collaboration within Pittsburgh Regional Tr a nsi t’s P lanning & S er v i c e Development Department. Intern positions at PRT are seasonal positions and will be limited to a maximum of 16 weeks of employment, with a cap of 29.5 hours per week.

Additionally, this position is fully in-person at PRT’s Downtown administrative offices, along with some field work across PRT’s service area.

ASSISTANT DIRECTOR OF RAILCAR MAINTENANCE Pittsburgh Regional Transit is seeking a Assistant Director of Railcar Maintenance to Manage and coordinate all aspects to the Railcar maintenance functions including vehicle running and heavy repairs, vehicle cleaning, daily vehicle servicing, and the coordination of building maintenance for the Port Authority of Allegheny County d/b/a Pittsburgh Regional Transit (PRT).

Responsible for Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, Electric Mass Transit Inspection and scheduled preventive maintenance programs and the development of a long-term work plan. Monitors program performance and maintenance of inspection records. Responsible for all activities of Vehicle Overhaul program; including development of long-term work plan, development of new overhaul procedures, production, and submittal of monthly program statements. Monitors program performance and maintenance of overhaul records. Investigates and resolves employee relations issues, conducts performance reviews, training, and development of front-line supervisors, and conducts first step grievance hearings for section grievances submitted. Implements and monitors programs developed

by PRT and the Railcar Maintenance Management Team to improve maintenance related issues including safety, attendance, reduction of road, equipment, and parts failures.

Assists in the preparation and monitors department operating budget.

Makes necessary operational adjustments to maintain close adherence to same.

Essential Functions: • Supports regular service planning activities: • Drafts and reviews portions of PRT’s Annual Service Report.

• Drafts and reviews PRT’s Service Standards.

• Attends meetings with other teams at PRT and support cross-team research and collaboration efforts.

• Evaluates existing route performance relative to service standards.

Job requirements include: • Recently graduated or currently pursuing a four-year degree in planning, urban studies, information sciences, public policy, engineering, or a related field of study.

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

• Experience with group projects and ability to work collaboratively.

• Ability to conduct thorough and organized research.

• Familiarity with qualitative and quantitative research methods.

• Experience with ArcGIS Pro or other Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software for geospatial analysis and published cartographic products.

• Demonstrated ability in the use of Microsoft Windows, Word, PowerPoint and Excel.

• Experience with Microsoft Outlook.

Preferred attributes: • Familiarity with Pittsburgh Regional Transit’s existing network and services and an interest in public service.

• Experience in transportation planning, urban planning, community engagement, or public administration.
