Trail Permit Fee Increase… Pros & Cons
S
eems every five years when the sunset condition arrives and it’s time to add a few more dollars to the cost for the Michigan Snowmobile Trail Permit, the same old controversy crops up again with fairly large number of snowmobilers opposing any increase and vowing to “quit the sport” due to the rising cost to play in the snow. Sorry, but there are about the same number of enthusiasts that support the increase, providing they see some improvement in the trails and accountability of where the additional funds are being spent. In fact, there is a growing number of those enthusiasts who would like to see even more dollars required for the privilege to play in the winters, similar to those imposed by most provinces that make up the large land mass to our north we call Canada. When one looks at the overall picture, and without blinders on or bias set in the mind, it’s easy to understand
why we need the increase in the trail permits, the same as every family I know of needs the occasional increase in their income… obviously, to keep up with the rising cost of living! When the proposal for a five dollar fee to use the trails in Michigan was submitted back in 1993, the uproar could be heard all the way to both the east and west coasts, and snowmobilers in other states raised such a protest over it, declaring they would boycott and never come to this state again that many snowmobile related businesses fearing they may go bust, joined the protests and the proposal was soundly defeated… but not dead by any means. As the cost of grooming equipment continued to increase and that expense passed down to the consumers, it was more evident than ever that the funding formula needed a transfusion from somewhere, and some of the neighboring states were beginning to have the same
growing pains and feeling that same crunch. The proposal was again submitted to our state legislature and with overwhelming support from a majority of snowmobilers, was approved on a trial basis and in 1995 a ten-dollar Trail Permit was required for all snowmobiles, not only for use on the trails but on any and all lakes and lands within the state’s jurisdiction, except when the sleds were used on one’s own property. With every new concept there is bound to be some considerations overlooked and even more exceptions to the rule will surface, and so it was with those who use a snowmobile on the frozen surfaces of inland lakes and even out on the Great Lakes. The request to be exempted from having to purchase the trail permit was proposed almost immediately and after much deliberation and plenty of “how to do it legally”, the law was altered to allow snowmobiles to be operated on the frozen surfaces of waters controlled by the state
DNR, but only when certain requirements were met. Snowmobiles may be operated on ice-covered waters without a trail permit, but the operator must be in possession of a current fishing license and the appropriate fishing paraphernalia. The snowmobile must also be launched onto the ice in the same manner as a boat and not be operated on any land whatsoever, including at the launch site. If the snowmobile is operated on any grounds other than property by the owner, it must have the legal trail permit. As for those used on private property by the property owners, if the snowmobile is taken off that property (even to cross a public road to get to more private property) it must have a current trail permit! As mentioned previously, the cost of providing a safe and smooth trail for snowmobilers to enjoy has increased at an annual rate, primarily due to the increase in cost of the equipment needed to do the necessary grooming. continued on page 10

LIVING IN A COMPATIBLE STATE Snowmobilers have always willingly paid for that privilege and the snowmobile programs have always been administered as a user pay operation. Understandably, it is more of a financial burden on some than on others, for example, one major complaint is from a family of five with multiple snowmobiles, and only go on one or two trips per season, as opposed to the single rider, or maybe a couple who could opt to ride a two-up rather than having separate sleds. There is no single answer to satisfy everyone, but the Michigan law is much more compatible than most other states. In our great state, every snowmobiler pays the same whether a resident or a visitor. The trail permit fee applies to the snowmobile regardless of origin and is required if it is ridden anywhere in the state, with the exceptions as mentioned previously. Most other states have a tiered fee for residents and a separate fee for non-residents. Similarly, across the border in Canada, the fee can change from province to province and has traditionally been much more expensive than the fees imposed in the United States. Suggestions that Michigan consider a daily or weekly permit with a lesser fee than the seasonal permit has been reviewed several times and always disposed of as being, for a better word, discriminatory and too convoluted to enforce. Several surveys have been conducted by both the snowmobile association and the DNR
with the majority of participants responding favorably to the current method of fee increases and permit distribution. When one considers the overall cost of snowmobile purchase and the associated equipment to maintain and transport it, the clothing and safety apparel, and the cost for food, fuel, and lodging in order to spend a couple of days enjoying the snowmobiling experience, the trail permit increase doesn’t amount to much. As one very avid enthusiast put it the other day, if the four dollar increase in the trail permit is a deal breaker, perhaps living in a state that supports snowmobiling activities isn’t the best place to be. The majority understands that to have a premier trails system such as we do here in Michigan, there must be adequate funding to support and maintain it. The fees from the sale of trail permits goes for that purpose and for nothing else. The people who operate the groomers are, for the most part, unpaid club volunteers doing the job willingly and without regret because they also enjoy a smooth and safe trail. The cost of a single trail permit is now $52.00 and will remain at that level for the next five years regardless of any changes in the economic status of other commodities. Remember there are many snowmobile-related businesses that depend on snowmobilers for their very existence throughout the winter months… I, for one, will gladly pay the increase for all my sleds and look forward to a safe and bountiful snowmobile season. •

efore we get ready to enjoy all of our winter activities and sports, there is plenty of time to participate and experience “fall” at its finest along C-48 The Breezeway and the communities of East Jordan, Ellsworth and Atwood. We have been very busy cutting ribbons and celebrating openings of new businesses and
completions of projects and attractions. Besides great color tour trip opportunities throughout the region in your car (we have color tour maps available with points of interest to visit at our Chamber Office in East Jordan) there are many other ways to celebrate fall. How about a kayak, canoe or guided raft trip
down the wild and scenic Jordan River or the Chain of Lakes Watertrail? Don’t have a vessel, no worries we have an outfitter to supply a kayak or canoe on both waterways. If you are a mountain bike enthusiast, the new Brown’s Creek Pathway Trail, located in East Jordan near the East Jordan Middle/High School provide a great

A Natural R Haven Bouverette thrives on the thrill of speed and of winning. BY KERI GUTEN COHEN CONTRIBUTING WRITER
H
aven Bouverette of Bad Axe loves to win. And this focused young woman works hard to ensure she keeps on winning in snowmobile races in lower and upper Michigan and in Wisconsin and Minnesota. A recent graduate of Cass City Senior High, Haven also excelled at four sports —basketball, softball, volleyball and track. And she’s interested in farming as well, being just as at home on the family tractor as she is on a fast-moving sled. “I’m a tomboy, for sure,” she said during a virtual conversation this summer. Speed is definitely an attraction for Haven, who has been snowmobile racing — and winning — since age 7 when she started driving her first snow scoot. Now she’s 18 and still winning, always pushing to go faster and win smarter. She modestly says she cannot recall how many first places she’s earned. A review of her portfolio of 2021 highlights includes no less than 17 first-place finishes, including two at the prestigious Vintage World Championship in Eagle River, Wisconsin, home of the World Championship Derby, snowmobile racing’s Big One. Though more women are racing now, they still are in the minority. Haven says she raced about 30 women racers during her career. To put it into perspective, she estimated about 10-15% of all racers are female. “Back in the ‘60s and ‘70s, it was very rare to see a woman in this kind of sport,” she explains. “I do not think there was ever a time where it increased dramatically. I think women slowly started to get into it as it became more ‘acceptable.’”

“Not too often do you see a female win when she is racing against a bunch of guys, especially in the very competitive classes,” Haven says. “The last couple of years, it has been very good for me. Usually if I don’t win the race, I am in the top three.” Her dad, Rocky Bouverette, a longtime snowmobile racer himself, is clearly proud of his daughter’s skills, her successes and her attitude. “She likes it when she wins,” he says, “but she is very humble and doesn’t put herself on a higher standard. She shows good sportsmanship.” Rocky and Haven

that I’m going out to win. With some bigger races, I get nervous, but I get that out of my head. There are a lot of great racers. I keep my cool and stay calm. “When I’m out there on the line, I’m just thinking about what I’m doing. When it’s time for the flag to drop, I make sure the sled is at the right rpm, the clutch is engaged, that I’m getting my hole shot and that I’m the first one off the line.” While racing, she keeps an eye on all competitors. “If I’m behind someone, I watch what line they are going to take and find a line that works from the outside,” she says. “I keep my head, race clean and smart. I watch the track and people when I’m not racing, and I see what works and what doesn’t.” Haven’s smart racing and her winning record have afforded a signifi-
cant new opportunity this season. She’ll be driving a WV Performance Racing sled in semi-pro enduro races at MIRA tracks in Michigan and in Eagle River, Wisconsin. MIRA is the top organization Haven races in. The enduro is a 50-lap race; Haven usually races sprints, with up to seven times around the track. Last year, she did mini-mini enduros of 15 laps on her F 500 for the first time. Charlie Wiltse, MIRA vice president and co-owner of the Unionville-based WV Performance Racing team with Brent Vermeesch, says they were attracted by Haven’s talent. “She just dominates everything she does on the racetrack. I mean it!” Wiltse says. “We have won the enduro championship for five straight years and we are particular who we bring on. It’s the person we
think will win the title for us. Hand’s down, Haven is that person. She’s just good. Her potential is amazing. I absolutely see her becoming a professional and winning. Time will tell what she can accomplish.” Though Haven has raced for a decade at her young age, does fear ever enter her mind? “When I first started racing the bigger classes, I was scared a little bit,” she says, “but now I find it pretty fun. I love going fast, so you could say I’m an adrenalin junkie.” Still, safety is always a concern. “Racing is a sport where it’s when not if you’ll have an accident — and how bad,” she says realistically. “I’ve had four wrecks in the 10 years since I started racing. into bales. Last year at MIRA, I high-slided the sled and flipped. I was still safe enough to race and got second. My worst injury was a bruised hip.” She admits her dad keeps her padded up for safety from head to toe; this includes a chest protector and a neck brace as well as orange gear that’s very visible even in clouds of snow dust on the track. “Safety is No. 1 in my book,” Rocky says. “You’re going 80-90 mph on the track; you fall off a sled at 60-65 mph and, sliding across the ice, you can pick up speed. Going headfirst into a hard bale can take its toll.” Just as he insists on safety equipment, sometimes Rocky can’t resist offering some constructive criticism. It’s an area where their love and respect for one another is clearly evident. For Rocky, the advice comes from decades of winning snowmobile races. Ironically, he’s only beaten Haven twice in competition. There’s a dry erase board in the trailer where she regularly posts her win over her dad — again. “There are times I know I get on her more than I should, but I know she’s capable. If I don’t push her, she won’t push herself,” he says. “It’s her being open to learning and watching other racers. I want to say I coached her well, but I know she takes what I say and adds her own input.” Haven agrees. “I have my own way of thinking, and we might look at it a different way, but we usually listen to each other pretty good,” she says. “I am more openminded and he can be a little bull-headed, but it’s good talking it out. It’s just the two of us; we can’t afford to be bickering. I try to think like dad. We work pretty good together.” Haven’s mother, Kathy, and
her older sister, Kelsey, also ride snowmobiles, but they prefer to stick to trail riding, especially during long family weekends Up North. Kelsey tried racing but decided she didn’t like it; at races, she often positions Haven’s sleds at the next starting line. Kathy is a high school gymnastics coach and her schedule doesn’t allow her to make it to too many of Haven’s races. Both are involved, hugely supportive and proud of her racing accomplishments. Haven’s record of wins has earned her sponsorship from several area businesses. Mickey Maier of Mickey’s Sleds and More in Midland gives her discounts on parts for her sleds and Woody’s Traction near Edenville has her on its racer program and offers discounts. Darcy McCarty of McCarty Repair in Bad Axe gave her $1,000 before the Eagle River World Championship and bought all her race fuel last season. She did so well that McCarty gave her another $1,000 afterward. WOMEN RACERS “I’ve been racing Eagle River for three years, and it’s a very big honor,” Haven says. In some classes, she was the only woman racing against men – young men as well as those in their 40s and 50s. “There are not a lot of women competitors out there,” Rocky says of Eagle River. “Haven is within the top three winningest women.” The woman racer Haven strives to beat is Sabrina Blanchet of Quebec, Canada. “I think Haven can beat her in the 440 Super Mod class,” Rocky says. “I am fully confident, and it’ll be a darn good race. As a dad, I’m hoping she can beat [Sabrina] all the time.” Until then, what’s it like coming
in first place over mostly male racers? “All men have their egos,” Haven says. “When I do win, there are guys who come up and congratulate me about my racing, not that I’m a girl. It is a guy sport. Some are impressed, some feel they have beaten by a girl.” Rocky hears some of the talk after the races. “There’s a lot of talk about her at their trailers,” he says. “A good percentage are very respectful. The younger boys, their egos get hurt and don’t like to come up and say, ‘Good job.’ The No. 1 thing is to teach these guys sportsmanship – to say, ‘good luck’ and ‘good job.’ Racing is another family to us. We want to have fun — and we’re going to win that race.” Along with sportsmanship, Haven has learned to pass her enthusiasm and love of racing on to young girls coming up in the ranks at BEVRA vintage races in Lakeview, Michigan. Rocky says they look up to his daughter. Normally a shy person, Haven goes out of her way to give them a few minutes of her time and talk with them or offer a welcomed “good job.” “They really appreciate it and look up to her,” Rocky says. “She’s an inspiration.” Haven says she feels very fortunate because snowmobile racing is an expensive hobby and few kids get to race, much less have so many sleds in the game. “I’m very thankful I have the opportunity and that I’m as competitive as I am. It’s not just the financial aspect but also the support,” she says.
INTO THE FUTURE This fall, Haven became a student at Michigan State University in East Lansing. She’s in the agribusiness program, pursuing that love of farming she cultivated as youngster. The family raises a few cattle for beef, farms a little and Rocky’s business is manure hauling. Haven knows that she’ll have to pick her races because of her college obligations. She says she expects to run in the champ class, then pro. “The next few years will be pretty tricky,” she says. “I hope I get to race and do as well as last year. I definitely want to race against Sabrina. In my opinion, she’s the No. 1 woman racer. The first time I met her, I got her to sign my helmet.” Rocky says they will do whatever it takes to make the racing happen. In the meantime, they have the race videos taken by the small camera mounted on Haven’s helmet. “We watch the videos over and over again after races,” he says. “Some of the passes she is making give me goosebumps. I’m so proud of what she does.” As they look to the current racing season, which starts in December, their total love of the sport of snowmobile racing takes over. Women of Snowmobiling From first riding a 1969 Mercury to racing the I-500 track Jeri Griffen is still a huge supporter of snowmobiling. BY JIM DUKE
N
o doubt there are thousands of ladies across this great land that more than qualify to be considered in this category, but there are few that have the same passion or equal the enthusiasm for snowmobiling activities as Jeri Griffin, a lifelong resident of Cedarville, Michigan. A recent interview with this very enthusiastic individual was quite contagious and I left with a renewed interest in the sport myself, something that had been waning for the last couple of years. Although Jeri was somewhat reluctant to share all her accomplishments during her lifetime, she did say there were many that

she was pretty proud of, and willingly talked about just a few. She said she first learned to ride on a 1969 Mercury snow machine, one she referred to as a “two-ton beast” and a contraption that required power to handle with any degree of control. She told me a short story about her first adventure when she took her son, just three at the time, and headed out to Grandma’s for a visit, not realizing that should something go wrong, they would be at nature’s mercy. That something did happen while riding in a ditch along side of a road and tipped over. She said thankfully no

one was injured but she discovered she was not strong enough to right the sled by herself and was still struggling with it when a passerby stopped his vehicle and offered assistance. He climbed the snowbank and waded through the deep snow, wearing dress trousers and street shoes, he related he was also a
snowmobiler and always tried to help whenever he saw anyone in distress. Once they had the snow machine back on its track the stranger departed without even saying who he was, but he did instill a lesson that she still lives by, that snowmobilers help snowmobilers… it’s just an unwritten rule.

still the current Treasurer. Believing in supporting the areas where they ride, she and John are, or have been, members of other area clubs, including Sault Sainte Marie Snowmobile Club. Jeri says snowmobiling is still her favorite sport and believes the winter season is the best. She says most of all she values the countless lifelong friendships they have made through experiences connected with activities like snowmobiling. She says her racing days are over but she is still riding (She rides a Ski-Doo these days) and she still likes to get out on an open stretch and punch it now and then… She says who knows, maybe someone will put together a Women’s “Over 70” race someday and she just might have to break out those old racing colors again. •

Racing
Who got you into snowmobiling and when; what was their influence on you with regard to the sport? When I was 16 years old my parents bought a 1972 Skidoo 399 Nordic, this was my first experience with riding mostly around our yard in Clarkston, MI. In 1974 I began working in the pits on a race team through my then employer, Acutus. I began my own build shortly after that, building a 1975 340 Alloute Super and a 1976 Arctic Cat 440Z. I began racing both of my builds in the Caro 150, Thunder Bay 250 and Soo I-500 in the following years. My snowmobile racing hobby quickly grew into racing Motocross until 1983 participating in both 125 B and 250 A/B classes . When did you start racing and what is your proudest achievement so far at the track? My personal racing career started in 1975 which building those machines has always been an important accomplishment. I believe all our accomplishments as a team have been noteworthy, not one is more important than another but certainly some more attractive. I am extremely proud every year of the team, without them none of this would be possible. To say I am proud of just one moment is hard, every win brings its own set of emotions of motivations that keeps us going. To answer the question, I would say our consistent growth is my proudest accomplishment. What is your career goal as an owner? I think our goals shift every year, but there are always a few constants as far as race/ track accomplishments go. Last year we hit one of the milestones with our first MIRA Endro race win and continuing to accomplish the series points Championship, it would be nice to see the same success in 2022. We have the team and equipment to support that goal again, especially with our drivers Joe Burch and James Hicks piloting our machines again in 2022. I think it also goes without saying any win at Eagle River is on the bucket list for the team and a race win at the Soo I500. I know both goals are close, but we have some tough competition so we are really looking forward to 2022.

What were the driving factors to start the race team? As a racing enthusiast throughout my life, it has always been a goal to operate my own team in some capacity. However, I never expected it to grow from the humble beginnings it did. After my racing years were behind me, continued on page 31

He started out as a fuel man for a team, and they asked him if he wanted to race. He had ridden snowmobiles since he was a kid and had experience racing 3-wheelers and 4-wheelers and didn’t hesitate to jump at the opportunity. I was about 5 years old then, and he would often take me to work on the sleds with him, and my parents always took my sister and I to the races. By age 15 I had spent a lot of time in shops and race trailers, and idolizing my dad the way I did, I wanted to start racing snowmobiles too. I remember being at the Soo I-500 in 2006 and sneaking into the pits to go see my dad. He was getting ready in the race trailer, and I finally asked him if we could get a snowmobile for me to race. His famous saying was “I’ll think about it” but I knew that really meant YES, it was just a matter of when he’d be able to make it happen. I stayed in the pits to watch my dad get on the sled and stood on top of the trailer to watch the race for a while, excited that someday I’d be just like him and racing

Who got you into snowmobiling and when; and what was their influence on you with regard to the sport? I got into snowmobiling after watching some old snocross on ESPN. I saw Blair Morgan, Kirk Hibbert, and Aaron Scheele on those 98-99 Arctic Cat Snopros and immediately wanted one of those and wanted to race. My mom and dad helped me get my dream started and supported me for a long time and are my absolute biggest fans to this day. When did you start racing and what is your proudest achievement so far on the track? I started to race in December of 2000 at a WSA national snocross race in Gaylord, I remember that race like it was yesterday.. and the friends I made that season are still in my life to this day. So far the proudest achievement on track have been winning pro class in snocross in 2008, taking 3rd in my first I-500 race in 2010, the success I achieved racing for Team Blu in 2014 and 2015, winning Gaylord Extreme Powersports 250 and points championship last year with Yovich Racing. continued on page 30 MICHIGAN SNOWMOBILER + ORV • OCTOBER • 2021

this track. I was coming down off the trailer, ready to head back up the hill where I was supposed to be, when I heard someone say “Joe B fell off the sled.” I went running to see what happened, but was stopped before I could see that my dad was lying unconscious on the back stretch. He’d had a heart attack and passed away that day. My dad was well loved by many people, and those many people made my racing dreams come true in his honor. At the time of his death he was racing for Mike Otto, and Mike ended up asking me when I was 18 if I’d like to race the Rookie Roundup at the Soo, the next year I began racing the I-500. I am thankful to have had the support to grow into the racer I am now, at the level my dad probably dreamed of. When did you start racing and what is your proudest achievement so far on the track? I have had a few achieve-
ments I’m very proud of, first being that in 2014 I took 3rd place at the I-500 with Beard Motorsports. Many people go to the Soo to compete and don’t even finish that race, I think a top 5 is a huge accomplishment, and taking 3rd behind the factory teams was an honor. In 2019 I took 4th place with Yovich Racing. 2020 was a great year for me also, as my partner James Hicks and I won the MIRA Circuit points championship with Yovich Racing. I also won the MIRA points championship in Champ 440, a class that I’ve always wanted to race. In 2020 I also had the amazing opportunity, given to me by Randy Hazard, to compete in the Vintage World Championship at Eagle River. After fighting through days of motor issues and parts breaking, I qualified into the top 10. Having never raced there before and having never raced a leaf spring sled, I was pretty happy to make it in. In the final race for continued on page 32
What is your career goal? My career goal has always been to have fun in this sport. I feel when I am not having we won’t be successful, so I try to have the most fun I can on the track and off the track just being there in the moment. If I were to put a measurement put on my career goal though, I would say it would be winning the I-500 . How did you become part of this racing team? Dave and I started talking in the off season before 2016 and I liked the direction he wanted to take his team. I decided to hop on the following season and have not looked back since. We have made great progress since and I have made a great friend with Dave and the rest of the team. •

I found my snowmobiling trail riding home in Pine Stump Junction, MI. I made some great buddies up there and had years of great times and more crazy ideas than you can count, but in 2007 is when our race team got its start. Someone gave me a flyer for the Great Lakes Antique Snowmobile Series race in Newberry, knowing this was in my racing wheelhouse I called my buddies. What I didn’t know at the time, the snowmobile that they wanted to build was an extremely weathered Snowjet that someone had in their yard, there was a tree growing from under the hood and countless animals who called it home for years. After racing
that in the first G.L.A.S.S. race Yovich Racing was born. I didn’t wake up one day and say “I am going to start a race team this year” it just continued to evolve for us. Just a couple of passionate guys cobbling somethings together to go racing. After 13 G.L.A.S.S. race wins and 2 points championships, my drivers at the time Eric Zellar, Nathan Woodward and Brian Anderson really wanted to build something to race at the Soo I500. So we built those guys a heavy indestructible 2012 Skidoo 1200. That was another moment in time that was a turning point for us, we place 13th finishing the I500 that year. Imagine what we could do with one
year under our belt? From there we switched gears a bit and bought some Polaris endro sleds committing MIRA series full time and raced in every I500 since. I never expected for my program to grow to the size and success that we have seen throughout the years. In the summer I stay busy with another project partnered with Joey Burch with our B-Mod and Late Model dirt cars. I am now a four seasons race team owner and I wouldn’t have it any other way. I have had the pleasure of working with some the best racers, mechanics, suppliers, and fans though out the years, most of them I can call family. Anything I need they are right there.
When I lost my wife in 2014, they all stood by my side through the hardest years of my life without a doubt they kept me going. I think that most people who really know me can say with confidence I will never commit to anything halfway, if I want to do something give all my energy to get it done right. It is a great honor to share a helpful hand to the racing community, share my knowledge and most of all have a racing family that is an absolute joy to work with. Here is my shameless plug to all the people who have gave their time and energy to the accomplishments of Yovich Racing. Thank you for everything, these accomplishments belong to you too. •

the championship, I got the holeshot. I battled for the lead through the race, and odds were in my favor with two laps left in the race and I had a good lead, but began to lose power. I ended up taking second place with a broken pipe and a broken crank. What is your career goal? With racing snowmobiles or in my dirt cars my goal is always to get better, as a racer and as a competitor and a mentor for others. Ideally, someday I hope to be racing, building, and consulting full time. Thanks to Dave Yovich I’m closer than I’ve ever been, but the rest falls on me to get to that level. How did you become part of this racing team? I spent a lot of great years committed to Beard Motorsports, but they began to pull out of the snowmobile racing circuit in 2018. I started racing for really any team that needed a driver, and was eventually approached by Dave Yovich to start racing for him. He offered not only
a mod enduro sled, with co-driver James Hicks who I liked and respected, but he was also going to get me on multiple sprint sleds. I had no idea how much that initial meeting was going to change my life in more than just the snowmobile racing world. In that aspect, though, it’s been an amazing and rewarding relationship with my team, everyone listens and works together to make the sleds better every race, and every season. Beyond snowmobiles, Dave invested in me as a dirt car driver, starting out with an IMCA Modified in which we won a track championship in our second year, and this year we also got a UMP Late Model. Dave has become a big part of my life and I’m thankful and grateful every day that racing brought us together. Yovich Racing is more than a team, it’s a family, and in some ways Dave has become a father figure for me and a support I never really expected to gain. I hope that we will be able to race together for a very long time to come.•

estled on the sunrise side of Northern Michigan is a small town that comes alive in the summertime. The Tawas Area, located in Iosco County is the ideal summer destination, situated right on the shore of Lake Huron. However, with miles of Snowmobile trail the fun doesn’t stop when the snow starts to fall. With over 94 miles of designated snowmobile trials, countless trails for cross country skiing and snow shoeing, Lake Huron, the AuSable river and numerous inland lakes for ice fishing the Tawas Area offers activities for everyone. SNOWMOBILING Iosco County has 94 miles of groomed snowmobile trails. The Huron Snowmobile Trail has five starting points in Iosco County and connects to trails across the state. The two trailheads closest to town are the Tawas Area Trailhead (off Monument Road on the left before Camel Road) and the Sand Lake Area Trailhead (off Esmond Road and Indian Lake Road). ORVs are allowed on parts of the Huron Snowmobile Trail. FISHING The Tawas area has numerous fishing spots. Fishing in Tawas Bay includes walleye, northern pike, yellow perch, brown trout, and smallmouth bass. During the spring and fall, whitefish, steelhead, brown trout, lake trout and walleye move along the shoreline of the bay. Don’t forget to try your luck on the AuSable River, Tawas Lake, Long Lake in Hale or Van Etten and Cedar Lakes in Oscoda, along many other of smaller public inland lakes. CROSS COUNTRY SKIING The network of trails known as the Corsair Trail has three trailheads, each about seven miles northwest of downtown East Tawas. Corsair Trail is one of the Midwest’s finest cross-country ski trail systems. It offers opportunities for skiers of all levels – and provides a unique opportunity to view a Michigan winter from the depths of the Huron National Forest. Over 26 miles of trails and loops flank

Monument Road. There is skiing to fill a few hours or an entire weekend! DOWNTOWN Unlike many Northern Michigan destinations, the East Tawas downtown Area does not close-up when the temperatures drop. The area offers a variety of restaurants to choose from year around, and most of the quaint downtown shops also stay open year around. The downtown is comprised of 3 blocks of a variety of different stores to choose from. The local movie theatre is also downtown, has two screens and has nightly showings of the newest releases. EVENT Tawas is home to the wellknown “Perchville USA” festival that takes on the first full weekend in February every year. After having to cancel the festival in 2021 the Tawas Area Chamber of Commerce is excited to bring the event back to the community. The 2022 festival, being held on February 4th and 5th, will be the 71st year for the event. Perchville USA, which brings about 4,000 spectators out, has a variety of different events. The pre-Perchville activities begin the Saturday before the event with a coronation breakfast where the Perchville Royalty is crowned, the following Thursday the Royal feast is held. The weekend of the celebration includes a parade, family fair, chili cook-off contest, ATV races, fishing tournament, polar bear swim cornhole tournament, and a hospitality tent with live entertainment. If you’re lucky you might even spot the Perchville mascot, Nanuk who is a polar bear, walking around town! •
Iosco County, Tawas and Sand Lake for you next snowmobile or ORV trip
I
have rode many places across lower and upper Michigan since I began riding many years ago. When I think of loading up the sleds or the ORV my first thought is to head North of the Bridge. As our kids got older we started looking for places closer to home to ride and discovered the Sand Lake trail head in Iosco County. The trail head is very well maintained throughout all of Michigan’s seasons and has lots of room to park larger trucks and trailers. The trails are groomed for both sled and ORVs, in order to offer you a day of great riding. When you start your riding adventure, you head north for about 8 miles until the trail comes to a tee. mile ride on wide trails through the Huron National Forest. You will see a ton of wildlife and these days it just might include a bear. I can also tell you that some of the best wild blueberry picking is along the trail as well. If you need gas or are hungry you are in luck, you will pop out at the Five Channels Dam and Desi’s Taco Lounge is waiting for you. At this point you can keeping heading East or North. If you choose the North trail then all of lower Michigan could be in your future. Personally, I prefer the West trail head because it takes me past the park where my Grandma would take me and my sisters for a day of swimming. Sand Lake as the name implies has a nice sandy bottom for ideal swimming conditions. For us, our Grandma was an amazing cook and
lunch was always packed in an picnic basket filled with goodies made from scratch by her. Hopefully you can enjoy a memory similar to this one as you read our article. If you chose to head West you are heading toward South Branch. The trails are a little tighter heading West but still offer a great days ride. When you get to South Branch you can gas up get a snack and keep heading West or North. The trail system is perfect for great rides no matter what direction you go. There are plenty of places to eat and get fuel. So the next time you want to load up and go for the day think of Iosco County, Tawas and Sand lake area. Take it from me, I have rode many places in Michigan and I always look forward to riding the Sand Lake and Tawas trail system. •

Wilderness… An Opposing View!

ecently there’s been an alarming concern within the motorized recreation community about the aggressiveness of environmental groups to convince Congress to approve more areas for the designation of Wilderness. The primary organization behind this movement is the Wilderness Society whose goal is, and always has been, the 30X30 initiative recently picked up by the Biden administration and publicized as part of the President’s plan to stem, or eliminate, the effects of climate change. While I can understand the desire to preserve our natural resources, I question the motives behind the recent push to add more Wilderness areas to our great state. For the many folks who are still uninformed to this action, let me enlighten you just a bit and point out a few little-known facts as well. The push I refer to is the latest attempt by

environmentalists to reduce, or effectively eliminate motorized and mechanized access to several thousand acres of pristine public lands in the Upper Peninsula, known as the Ottawa National Forest, although that will never be made public in their agenda, nor will they ever admit to it. Some folks I’ve recently discussed this with believe it is simply an opportunity provided by President Biden’s thirty by thirty plan, already mentioned. In a statement by the President of the Upper Peninsula Environmental Coalition, their recent efforts to add four more areas under the Wilderness Act of 1964 is to prevent desecration of the lands by logging and mining interests and keep the areas as undisturbed as possible. Our opposing view believes by creating more wilderness areas it is actually taking away jobs and

meaningful employment opportunities for local inhabitants, which both the timber and mining industries in the affected areas provide, not to mention a major loss of revenue from the recreational sector. A LITTLE WILDERNESS HISTORY A couple of hundred years ago the two main industries in the Upper Peninsula were logging and mining, The majority of mines were looking for copper which, by the way, was so plentiful, the U P became known as Michigan’s “Copper Country”, a name that has stuck with us to this day, but primarily in the Keweenaw. As for logging, the lush U P forests provided an abundance of timber and was, in many cases, recklessly logged off in keeping with consumer

But this was several decades ago and before there were stringent guidelines to regulate such activities, and yes, there are several areas remaining today in witness of loggers razing the lands. The Upper Peninsula is dotted with settlements, many now uninhabited, from days of the “mining & logging haydays” of the 1800’s. When it became evident of what was happening to the land due to such ravages, Congress stepped
in and took measures to stem the devastation by declaring many areas “off-limits” to loggers and miners, even though some of the areas had already fallen victim to the mining shovels or the cross-cut saws of the timbermen and designated such areas as Wilderness. To ensure compliance with these new rules, several land management agencies were established including the U.S. Forest Service, the National Park
Service, the Bureau of Land management, and the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service. It wasn’t long before designating large tracts of public lands Wilderness became a popular tool for the politicians use in their re-election campaigns, and in some cases was the only reason they remained in office. Designation of Wilderness of any area today requires the approval, and an official act of Congress. LOOKING AT CURRENT WILDERNESS STATISTICS To date, more than eight hundred areas across the country has been designated Wilderness, totaling about one hundred twelve million acres of federal lands, and spread out over forty-four states. ctober is Michigan’s most colorful month, and as our guest of honor we have a very colorful lady with a very colorful name, Jan Kolodziejczyk. Jan has been racing for two years, strictly on the MISA circuit, but has been snowmobiling since 1962. Jan, her husband Sy, and children Jeffrey, 7,
and Jennifer, 4, were one of the first families to purchase a snowmobile in the Indian River area, where they have a cottage. The Kolodziejczyks make their permanent home in Allen Park. “We still have the 1962 Polaris Sno-Traveler and all I can say is snowmobiles have sure come a long way!”, she said.
During her two years on the MISA docket, Jan has been a consistent winner on her Polaris TX. In 1971-1972 she placed first in Class B (B-Circuit) and second in Class AA. Sponsored by Northland Sports of Indian River, both Jan and Sy race wholeheartedly, traveling by car from Allen Park. Sy placed fifth in 1971-
