from the editor

A

t Michigan Snowmobiler and ORV we are super excited about the Snowmobile USA Snow Show at 46100 Grand River Ave, Suburban Collection Showplace, Novi, MI. It takes place on November 3rd, 4th and 5th. This year, we will have the privilege of sharing a double booth with MIRA and Harris Racing. Harris Racing will be displaying three of their sleds for fans to check out. Can’t wait to see everyone there! Also this month, we had a reader call in and ask that we mention Top of the Lake Snowmobile Museum in Naubinway, MI more often. I thought – holy cow – he’s right. So here’s an overdue THANK YOU to all the staff and volunteers that support this gem in Naubinway! If you haven’t stopped into the Top of the Lake Snowmobile Museum recently it’s always worth a visit.

Chances are you will get a chance to meet Chairman Charlie Vallier and his wife Marilyn Vallier, General Manager. Countless hours, and snowmobiling passion go into maintaining the museum and it shows. Charlie, Marilyn and just about anyone affiliated with this group are just great folks and very easy to have a good conversation with related to just about anything snowmobiling. If you can’t make it to Naubinway – Charlie and Marilyn almost always make the trip to Novi along with a great display from the Museum prepared especially for the Snow Show. Make sure to stop in and say hello. Charlie and Marilyn were some of the first people we met through Michigan Snowmobiler and ORV. They were very willing to not only lend insight into the history of snowmobiling, but also a bit of history on Lyle

Tisron the original owner. It was fun to speak with people that directly knew Lyle and his family right from the beginning of the magazine. During Covid restrictions (let’s hope we never experience that again!) Charlie and Marilyn were willing to open the museum conference room to us for a couple of necessary business meetings. It made a great deal of difference to us! We continue to be so appreciative of their hospitality during those crazy days. So I hope this answers the request to mention The Top of the Lake Snowmobile Museum. I’m just sorry I didn’t write down the reader’s name. This letter is for you and a reminder to all our readers that we take your comments seriously. Please let us know what you would like to read about. We will follow up. You never know, we may visit your hometown or favorite trail…Within this issue, make sure to start

thinking about snowmobile racing and the I-500. Check out the article on Brownlee Boys Racing in our Under the Helmet section on page 14. Then on page 22, Ric Federau takes us on a Journey Into the Pits of the I-500! Just to name a couple of the great articles we are bringing you this month. As always at Michigan Snowmobiler and ORV, we hope each of you is enjoying good health while dreaming of fun and the smell of revving engines in our pages! We look forward to seeing everyone at the Michigan Snow Show! Please remember to keep all our veterans and first responders in your thoughts and prayers. Please feel free to reach out to us. Be safe and enjoy the trails until our next issue.

aylord, Michigan, a charming up north community nestled at an elevation of 1,348 feet above sea level, is a snowmobiler’s dream come true. With its ideal location in the snowbelt, this picturesque town receives an average of 152 inches of snowfall each year, making it a haven for winter sports enthusiasts. From December 1 to March 31, Gaylord’s meticulously groomed snowmobile trails offer endless adventures, attracting riders from all over. In this article, we’ll explore the snowmobiling paradise that Gaylord has become, from its exceptional trails to the welcoming community and thrilling events that await.

EXPLORE NORTHERN MICHIGAN’S TRAIL NETWORK Gaylord’s snowmobile trails are a testament to the dedication of the local community. The Gaylord Area Snowmobile Trails Council, consisting of skilled volunteers, takes pride in maintaining and grooming these trails to perfection. Jerry Beattie, owner of the Sled Shed, attests to their commitment, stating, “Our club grooms more miles than any other in the Lower Peninsula year over year. We have more snow than most areas and high demand for grooming due to the number of sleds riding our trails daily.” MICHIGAN SNOWMOBILER + ORV • NOVEMBER 2023 continued• on page| 8 7

One of the remarkable aspects of snowmobiling in Gaylord is its central location within a network of trails that traverse eight northern Michigan counties. Using Gaylord as your base, you can explore epic trails in every direction. Heading west from Gaylord, you can jump on popular Trail #4, which takes you through the charming communities of East Jordan and Mancelona. If you prefer an eastern route, follow the trails through Johannesburg and Lewiston, leading north into Millersburg and Onaway. To the south, you’ll find untamed forests surrounding Frederic and Grayling. If you’re new to the area, don’t worry; free Snowmobile Trail Maps are available through the Tourism Bureau to guide you on your journey.

Gaylord offers a range of lodging options that cater to snowmobilers’ needs. From cozy cabins and resort settings to modern, comfortable hotels, you’ll find the perfect place to rest your head after a thrilling day on the trails. Another must-see option is the North Branch, offering an endless expanse of snowmobiling excitement. This route takes you south to Kalkaska’s famous Blue Bear Trail, west to the heavily forested Jordan Valley, and east to Lewiston’s Lovells Trail. The North Branch also features multiple connector trails and access to free-range National Guard land open to riding. Perhaps the most exhilarating trail is the North Central State Trail, a former railroad corridor converted into a 73-mile snowmobile path. This scenic route takes you through forests, farmland, and villages all the way to the majestic Mackinac Bridge. Along the way, you’ll find welcoming communities eager to serve snowmobilers, providing a chance to refuel your sled and yourself. SNOWMOBILING SUPPORT IN GAYLORD Along with seemingly endless trails, Gaylord offers a range of lodging options that cater to snowmobilers’ needs. From cozy cabins and resort settings to modern, comfortable hotels, you’ll find the perfect place to rest your head after a thrilling day on the trails. Some properties even sit right on the trail, allowing you to wake up and start your snowmobiling adventure right from your front door. Tourism Bureau, emphasizes, “Our hoteliers are used to working with snowmobilers and are excellent at accommodating their needs.” Gaylord’s snowmobiling support doesn’t stop at lodging. The entire community embraces winter and its adrenaline-seeking patrons. Local dealerships represent all four major sled brands and offer the latest technology and gear. Whether you need parts for repairs or expert service, you’ll find knowledgeable service departments ready to get you back on the trail. Many snowmobile-related businesses are conveniently located near each other, including The Sled Shed, Extreme Powersports and Mega Powersports. For those who don’t own a sled, rentals are readily available

at places like Boathouse Marine & Powersports, Sledhouse Snowmobile Rentals, and Snowbelt Motorsports. Additionally, gas stations along the trails ensure you never run out of rec fuel during your snowy adventures. EXCITING SNOWMOBILING EVENTS Plan your visit to Gaylord during one of its exciting snowmobiling events for an unforgettable experience. In 2024, two favorite events are making a return: Michigan Snowmobile Festival (February 2-3, 2024): Hosted by the Gaylord Area Tourism Bureau, this event offers snowmobilers the chance to ride the extensive trail system for two days. The class structure is similar to most sprint racing associations, allowing participants to join without major equipment changes. Rob & Bob Brownlee

Who got you into snowmobiling and when; What was their influence on you in regard to the sport? My Dads uncle, who would be my great uncle (Lynn Hicks) was hands down our biggest influence. He was heavily involved in snowmobile drag racing and high speed runs with snowmobiles in the 1970’s. Bob said he got his 10-year-old son Rob involved in oval racing in 1973 on a Polaris Colt and he has been hooked ever since. The oval racing lasted a few years then we focused on drag racing. I was Piloting my uncles 975cc speed run sled at 12 years old, and the sister 975cc drag sled all over Michigan ( my uncle lied about my age and would tell me to keep my helmet on) . Howard Smith was my riding soul mate all through our school and College years. We spent all our time in Munising every winter for weeks at a time. Eventually my dad would come ride with us too. It was Howard who bought the first set of Pro-5 pipes and we quickly got consumed building heavily mod sleds under the name Michigan Muscle. Soon we were building sleds for people, and I think from 1985 -1991 we sold more Pro-5 pipes and kits then any other Pro-5 dealer in the state. We had Larry Rugland and Burt Basset on speed dial and spent some time out in Roseau.

When did you start racing and what was your proudest moment at the track. I approached my dad about 3 years ago after a trip to Eagle River to meet up with longtime friend and GM co-worker Ron Wolfe. I told my dad I wanted to oval race snowmobiles again and eventually I wanted to start a Pro Enduro team. Racing at the I-500 in continued on page 16 MICHIGAN SNOWMOBILER + ORV • NOVEMBER • 2023

Sault Ste Marie, Michigan was always a major dream of mine that seemed unattainable for us. Without hesitation Bob said let’s do it, I want in. My son, my dad and I all share the same name Robert Brownlee. So that night at the kitchen table it seemed only fitting “Brownlee Boy’s Racing” was formed. Our proudest moment was standing on the starting grid at the 2022 I500 and hearing the national anthem play as we all realized we were going to fulfill my lifelong dream. I think our whole crew was tearing up. Also proud of our top 10 finish at Gaylord. What is your career goal as owners? Our goals are to form the best team we can and to competitively participate, have fun & do it safely. We approached this very realistically and had a three-year plan. Our first year our goal was to qualify for the I 500. We did it! Our second-year goal was to finish the I500 and we did it. (even though we destroyed a track and went down 80 laps). Now our goal is to finish in the top 10 at the

I500. We’re getting better every year. What were the driving factors to start a race team? There were several driving factors that pushed me to start this team. One driving factor was age. My dad had some medical issues at 82 and was hardly able to walk for a couple of years. At 84 now and with a few surgeries under his belt he is doing fantastic. I have raced everything, dirt track , drag cars, grass drag sleds, oval sleds, and motocross all with my dad by my side. This Enduro Racing will be the final chapter in my racing career, and I could not imagine doing this without him. The amount of father- son teams in this sport is unreal. The second factor was the group of guys who I met up with at Eagle River. We had a great group of guys made up of engineers and technicians with amazing work ethic and it seemed like every single person had a part of the puzzle we needed. My friend and longtime snowmobiling partner Eric Cope, who is also an engineer for Bosch,

16 | NOVEMBER • 2023 • MICHIGAN SNOWMOBILER + ORV

was instrumental in putting things in motion. There was no question who the best Crew chief for our team would be. Eric has done an outstanding job keeping everyone on task and keeping our equipment organized. Our team could not possibly exist without everyone’s participation. Cary Hunt, Ron Wolfe, Jason Bridget, Jaron Bridget, Doug Hunt, DJ Hunt, Rick Conaway, Steve Kirklin, Khloe Siler and Pat Siler make up our crew. Its amazing how close we have all become in just 2 short years. I can’t thank these guys enough for making all this happen. Brownlee Boys Racing LLC could not exist without the help of our sponsors. Hunt Tree Farms from Lake City Michigan is our biggest sponsor. Woody’s Traction, Mickeys Sleds, Castle X , Redline Oil, JD Marine, Lark Equipment and USI ski’s sponsor us as well and we appreciate them to no end. I can honestly say our racing family, whether it’s with MIRA, BEVRA or the I500, are the most supportive and the most helpful group of people you will ever meet. How did you get involved in snowmobiling & who influenced you? My dad Jack Cope and the members of our hunting camp (Ten Rattles Lodge) got me into snowmobiling. The group had been riding dirt bikes together for years and decided we needed a winter activity. Within a year at least 10 of us were riding regularly. How did you u get involved in Brownlee Boys Racing? I met Rob over 20 years ago at work and started talking snowmobiles. This led to trail riding all over the US and Canada almost every weekend. When Rob decided he wanted to go racing, since that’s all we did all winter, it just seemed natural to start racing with him. What are your goals for this season? Continued team improvement and having fun.

How did you get involved in snowmobiling & who influenced you? My dad Ron Wolfe got me into snowmobiling when I was around 12. I started drag racing when I was 13 and he has pretty much taught me most of what I know. When did you start racing and what was your proudest moment at the track? I started oval racing 2016. Not sure I have one proud moment. There’s definitely been a few. Sitting on the front row of the vintage WC 4 years in a row is a huge accomplishment. Winning 2 class World Championships stands out. Proudest moment in enduro racing is probably a tie between qualifying for the I500 and our first top ten last year at gaylord enduro. What is your career goal? Career goal I guess should be plural. I’ve accomplished a few so far with a few left. Winning a pro enduro would be up there. A top 10 at the I-500 would be icing on the cake. How did you u get involved in Brownlee Boys Racing? I met Rob Brownlee the team owner through him having worked with my dad at GM in the past. He was big into snowmobiles. Went to one race at Eagle River and he was hooked again. From that point on, we’ve been racing together one way or another together. DRIVER INTERVIEWS continued on page 20

How did you get involved in snowmobiling & who influenced you? My brother-in-law Rory Brower and I got 2 old snowmobiles from my grandpas barn 20 years ago and 1 of the 2 sleds was a 1972 Yamaha 292 single. My cousin Nick Siler caught wind of me owning a single cylinder Yamaha and called me saying I need to race the TC250. I had Never raced a snowmobile a day in my life and that winter we threw 96 studs in the track and 10” carbides on the original skis on a bone stock sled. Loaded the sled in the back of a pickup truck and made trip to traverse city. We qualified dead last out of 24 sleds. Rory and I were the 2 drivers I did 2 segments and he did 1. Our very first year at the TC 250 we finished 6th place. After that we were hooked and have been racing snowmobiles ever since. When did you start racing and what was your proudest moment at the track? I started racing vintage snowmobiles 18yrs ago, Modern enduro snowmobiles 2 years ago. my biggest snowmobile racing achievements would be 4 top 10 finishes at the TC250 4 years in a row. Eagle river vintage class world champion in the 440SS liquid class. 440SS Bevra Cup Champion. Raber bay fire on ice super stock 440 enduro champion 3 years in a row. I was also the MIRA 440SS season points champion in 2023. Pro enduro racing proudest achievements was a top 10 finish at Gaylord and finishing the I500 race in 2023. What is your career goal? My career goal would be to win a MIRA pro enduro race. And to finish top 5 at the SOO I-500. I’m keeping my goals obtainable. How did you u get involved in Brownlee Boys Racing? I met Rob Brownlee the team owner before there was even Brownlee Boys Racing at the Eagle River vintage world championships. Rob talked with Ryan and I briefly about racing and how he was looking to start a pro enduro team. Rob then asked if we were interested in joining as the teams’ drivers? Ryan and I were both taken back by that offer because we knew how much was involved and how big it meant to be given this opportunity. We both replied with “where do we sign?” we have become a race family ever since!

Then after getting the bug, Mike Leinberger started a MIRA team and I was able to join 4 years ago. Lots of thanks to Mike for getting myself hooked on going in circles instead of just trails and trees. When did you start racing and what was your proudest moment at the track? My family has been racing dirt bike Enduros and Hare Scrambles since I was born. I have raced on and off on bikes for my whole life, but sled racing is pretty new to me. Its now my favorite form of racing and I can’t wait for winter every year. I’m just happy to have completed the SOO this year with the Brownlee Boys. With my previous team, we blew up my first year with about 50 laps to go and my second year I broke my wrist a week before the race. What is your career goal? Just to have fun and be involved. That’s the whole point of this, although placing further and further up is the goal. How did you u get involved in Brownlee Boys Racing? Through some turn of events, I didn’t have a ride last year after the 1st MIRA race. CV Hunt was able to connect me with Rob Brownlee, one thing lead to another and I was asked to be one of the drivers for the SOO. Turned out to be a great time. The team is great, even though we had some adversity during the 500 last year, blowing a track at around lap 100, we were able to get back out once swapping out the track. Everyone kept in great spirits and just did what we had to do to keep turning laps, which is part of why it’s great riding for the Brownlee Boys Racing team.

1-500 the finish line

A Journey Into t BY RIC FEDERAU CONTRIBUTING WRITER

ime to reflect back on my last article for a moment. The article was titled Racing is racing Was filled with the action we experienced during the I-500 summer tour. Of course. We gave credit to the venues that hosted our tour. It was simply an outstanding experience. However, there was one venue I left out of the article intentionally. I’m speaking of Whittemore racetrack located in Whittemore, MI. If you’re not familiar with the Whittemore racetrack, let me fill you in a bit. The Whittemore racetrack is within the city limits of Whittemore, Michigan, on. M-65. For those of you who may not know. the Whittemore racetrack. is the oldest existing Oval Racetrack in Michigan. It holds this distinctive title for. seventy five consecutive

years and even stayed in operation during the dreaded COVID times. The track first opened in 1948 which happened to be the same year nascar was first introduced and started. The idea. to develop a race track at Whitemore came from a guy named Clifford Burkholder. He got together with a small group of men and started the Whittemore Race Club, which still owns the track today It’s a group of 12 people who manage this wonderful event and they meet monthly on a volunteer basis to oversee the operations of the classic venue. today, the track can host over 1-500 spectators and is a total non profit project. The history of the Whittemore racetrack dates back 75 years. The inception of the track was first developed as a dirt track mixed with clay and then covered

with oil to keep the dust down and keep the drivers safe. The history of this historic event obviously goes way back in time. It’s a story in itself that race fans really should take an interest in. Racing is racing. And if you’re a true race fan and you want a unique experience, visit the Whittemore racetrack in Whittemore, MI. The races are always great and the hospitality is second to none. On behalf of the I-500 board of directors. We want to express our heartfelt appreciation to the Whittemore racetrack club and staff for hosting our booth and supporting the I-500 summer tour. OK race fans, it’s time to get into high octane race mode. With only a matter of weeks ahead of us, we are fast approaching the 55th. running of the International 500 race. Which by the way Is always

In 1971 Rogers started racing on a 650CC Arctic cat king cat In rate for a team called Tucker’s hardware, which is out of AuGrey, Michigan. As a contributing writer. I recently had a Sunday sit down with Roger and asked a series of questions related to his racing and the transition into flagging for the International 500 race Hosted at Sault St Marie, MI. So race fans sit back, grab your beverage of choice, and let’s go over the sit down with legendary Roger Britt.

hosted. the first Saturday in February each year. This issue. I’m gonna take y’all into the area of the infield during the segment titled Tech chatter. Since you just read about the Whittemore racetrack, let me share the iconic connection. Whittemore and the I500 share in common. I’m speaking of a legend on the track of both auto

and snowmobile racing. I’d like to introduce to you Mr. Roger Britt. the official flagman for the I-500 for twenty consecutive years. Roger is a 77 year young Racing veteran who turned flagman and hails from the community of Turner, Michigan. Roger started his racing career back in 1977 racing autos and snowmobiles at the same time. His first race led

Ric: When you made the transition from racing to flagging, what trip’d your trigger to wanna be a flagman? Roger: It’s kind of funny. I never intended to be a flag man. One Whittemore monthly meeting I was simply appointed. We needed a flagman for auto racing and the committee basically said, you’re it, roger. And that’s where it all started back in 1971. Ric: I know you have to be alert and ready at all times when you’re flagging. What do you feel is the most important aspect of being a flagman? Roger: Without a doubt, it’s to be ready at all times to put the proper flag out in an effort to keep all drivers and flag men around the track as safe as possible at all times. You have to continued on page 24

be alert and ready at all times, because everybody on the track depends on you. Ric: So you actually got started flagging at the Whitmore race track. When did you first start flagging at the International 500 race? And how did that come about? Roger: Yeah, that’s correct. I got my start as a flagman at Whitemore. And I flag my first race at the I=500 back in 1991. My experience racing snowmobiles got me known within the snowmobile racing arena. And some people knew I was flagging at Whittemore as well. As Luck would have it, the Internet the International 500 was in need of a flag man. And I was approached by the acting race director at the time. Of course, I had raced at the I=500 track before and it seemed like the race director felt it was a good fit. I was approached and asked and I accepted. Ric: The International five hundred is a lengthy race, usually taking six to eight hours to complete. During the I500 race. Do you have a backup flag man? Or do you get spelled for personal brakes? Roger: I actually. flag the whole race and usually

get breaks for bathroom and for food at every plow break, which is every 100 laps they plow to clear the snow dust off the track. I do have a backup if necessary, but usually find enough time to take care of personal matters on my own without any issue. Ric: Today, at the famous I-500 mile oval track. The flagstand is enclosed on 3 sides. It’s heated and is perched high above and over the track. When you started flagging the I-500 were you using a flag stand, or were you standing on the ground? Roger: Well, back then, when I started flagging at the International 500 I stood on the ground for the whole race.. Believe me, you have to be tough. Sometimes it was really cold. From that point on I actually told the race director when I was asked to flag the I-500 again, I told the race director, I’ll only do it if you build a flag stand high above the track and over the track. The I500 called upon good ole Tommy Bauer, who built a beautiful stand over the track. I can’t thank the Bauer family enough. The I500 flag stand has become my ‘race track man cave’. It’s simply a blast to be in there. Thanks again. Bauers !! continued on page 26

Ric: Roger you’ve made it clear communication between you and the stand and officials trackside is very vital. How do you know when to put out a flag, be it a caution flag or other type of flag? Roger: The order to put out a flag depends on the need. other than a yellow flag meaning. caution, the order comes from the race director. Yellow is posted as needed from various trackside officials Strategically positioned around the track. Communication between all track officials and myself is done by virtue of high tech radios. Ric: For those who don’t know what flags are used and what color of flags mean, can you give the readers a list of flags and what they stand for? Roger, Roger: A green colored flag is for starting the race. A yellow flag means caution. a red flag means slow down and come to a slow stop A black flag

means pit immediately. and there could possibly be a penalty. A white flag means only one. lap to go. And of course, the checkered flag means the winner takes all.

know much about the International 500. This tour helped educate people about the sport of oval ice racing and the granddaddy of all of them, the I-500 race.

Ric: After the Dreaded Covid, You decided to retire from flagging altogether? What will you miss most about not being the flag man at the International 500? Roger: Boy, I think I’m gonna miss everything. Being in the flag stand high above the I-500 track, and seeing the sleds come out of turn four. Straight at me. Just a fly’n. Lol, I’m a true speed junkie. I love being in the stand where sometimes I can see things about to happen before they actually happen. Believe me, I usually have one hand down the yellow flag most of the time. And a lot of the ability to see things about to happen comes from my past experiences in racing and flagging throughout the years.

Ric: How would you describe the International 500 snowmobile race to someone who’s never been there to see it live? Roger: If you’re a fan of racing and you like NASCAR racing, you’ll love the International 500 snowmobile race. It’s like NASCAR on ice.

Ric: Roger, in your opinion, do you feel the I-500 summer tour was positive for the sport of oval ice racing and the International 500 race and why? Roger: I certainly do. The Summer Tour informed people who are race fans about the sport in general and the International 500 race. It gave race fans insight to winter sports and racing in winter. There are people who enjoy winter sports that don’t

We’re speaking with trackside official John Babcock, who hails from the Sault St Marie, Michigan community. John’s parents volunteered for decades, and his brother Mike is a seasoned veteran who raced at the International 500 track many times. the International 500. came as an “arrow board” person, working trackside, providing direction to the drivers on the track. In 2018. John began officiating and flagging in turns one and two at the International 500. He continues to officiate at this same location today. Let’s fire up the sled and head into turns one and two with John Babcock as I asked John about many aspects of his involvement. with the I-500. Ric: John, as a track official whose trackside, what do you feel is your primary objective? John: Obviously safety is paramount and my first concern. It’s important to keep calm and make certain I’m communicating well with others officiating and who are on my radio frequency. Ric: When trackside as an official, there must be a million things that go through your mind during the race. What are some of those things on your mind? John: Flagging as a track official, one of my responsibilities is to help control the pit entrance, which is between turns one and two, making sure drivers are aware of pit row accessibility. I’m also. observing drivers and their sleds for any parts that may be coming off the sled which could be a potential hazard to other racers. Another thing I think about all the time is my response time for putting out a yellow caution flag as necessary in order to get drivers to slow down. I’m also in a position to assist other officials should there be a wreck or mishap, if necessary. I consider radio communication extremely important and during the race I know relaying information must be clear, quick and accurate. One important fact is it’s important to be clear So you can be understood and it’s equally important To use radio etiquette. Ric: John, we all know you gotta be tough to be a trackside official. You’re out there for hours on end. Do you get personal brakes from time to time? Or how does that work? John: I usually Get. Two 20 minute breaks during the race. any other time I can get someone to spell me for personal breaks if necessary. All officials get a backup person to fill in if necessary. Plus, we have plow breaks every 100 laps and that gives us a few extra minutes for relief. Ric: The International 500 has a week-long series of events that happen on the track. You’re officiating all week for time trials and more. What do you enjoy the most? Do you enjoy officiating time trials or the main International 500 event? John: I really like working midweek and time trials. I work both turns 1 and two, since we have a smaller group of officials working mid week. Working both turns keep me busy. Keeps me moving and I get less cold on the main event race day Plus we have a full officiating crew and my area is more condensed and as an official I

HUBBELL concentrate more on my area and my responsibilities. Don’t get me wrong, I love every bit of what I do at the International 500 main event race day is just so exciting. Ric: What do you do to protect yourself from the cold elements when you’re trackside all day? John: Yeah, about that. I set my gear out daily before heading to the track. I make certain I wear a layer of apparel and take hand feet warmers as well. I always have a couple of changes of socks, and that’s extremely critical. I have a face mask that I use, and I make certain I have really warm gloves and good hats. Ric: John. How would you describe the International 500 to someone who’s never been there or seen it live? John: As a race fan myself, I’d say the International 500 is extremely fast, exciting and fun to watch. The I-500 is a great place to connect with friends, meet new people and have a great time. It’s a party atmosphere for individuals and there’s something for the whole family to do. Simply put, it’s great racing, good friends and good food. The I-500 will be something that each person attending will remember the rest of their lives. Ric: You’ve been involved with the International 500 for years on end, from volunteering as a track official to currently serving on the International 500 Board of directors as well. In your opinion do you feel the I-500 summer tour was a success and why? John: I love the fact that the I-500 participated in a summer tour at so many auto race venues. It. was a super idea, and it educated people about the sport and the I-500. Thousands of people witnessed and learned more about the I-500 and I feel that’s really important. The fact that race teams and drivers helped by putting race leads on display at the I 500 booth was awesome. It’s what we do collectively from promotion of the Rays to promotion of the teams and drivers as well. Racing isn’t over simply because it’s fall. Auto Racing ends and Oval Ice Racing begins. It’s racing all year round and the I-500 is something these people would simply love to see. They need to. come on UP and enjoy good ole U.P. racing hospitality. Ric: John, Thanks for taking time to share your input with our readers. It’s truly appreciated. Next issue is the November issue. Amazing Ontario Adventure

Elliot Lake should be your next destination ride. BY STEVE ANTUNES CONTRIBUTING WRITER

lgoma Country is a snowmobile riders paradise and Elliot Lake is one of its best kept secrets. Located two and half hours east of Sault Ste Marie on Hwy 17, the city boats nearly 200 miles of groomed OFSC trails. These magnificent trails offer a wide variety of white ribbon riding that treats sledders to a mix of twisting trails. Riders will experience an amazing tour thorough dense forest with various species of trees then onto old logging roads followed by multiple river crossings and ultimately escalating up and down the Canadian Shield at various altitudes. The scenery is breathtaking with several lookouts along the way featuring waterfalls and other amazing vistas which are perfect to satisfy the photographer or to just get that post worthy Instagram picture. There are even 3 warm up shacks with outdoor facilities throughout the trail system should you need a break. Elliot Lake is a sled friendly city. It all starts with two conveniently located staging areas. First is right on Highway 108 next to the famous F trail where you can offload your sled and be on the trail in minutes. The second is north of town at the Snowbirds Clubhouse. Elliot Lake offers some great dining options, both sit down and fast food, adjacent to the trail when you’re ready to refuel. When your sled needs to fuel, there are 2 fuel stations at the ready on of which is open 24 hours. When you’re ready to recharge, The Hampton and Dunlop Lake Lodge are ready to welcome you for a cozy stay. Both offer easy trail access and either on site or close proximity to restaurants. Should your equipment need some attention, the city is home to both Skidoo and Polaris dealerships as well as a Napa and a Canadian Tire. A great advantage of sledding in Elliot Lake is that even though the trails are vast, they offer the option of looping back to a compact full service city, complete with an array of retailers, services (including a hospital), bowling, curling, and more! Snow shouldn’t be an issue as the City sees average annual snowfalls of 9 feet with temperatures between 10 and 12 degrees Fahrenheit between December and March. continued on page 32 MICHIGAN SNOWMOBILER + ORV • NOVEMBER • 2023 |

Adding to the Snowmobile culture of the city are the Elliot Lake Snowbirds. This local club has been around for 50 years and are active members and caretakers of the trail system. These fine men and women organize a variety of events including fun runs, socials and club rides. If you come across them on the trail, ask them about our trails, they will love to share a story or two. Planning your trip? Elliot Lake serves as either a great start, or midpoint to your snowmobiling vacation. If you’re starting in the west, you can ride to Elliot Lake right from Sault Ste Marie along the D trail. If you want to stay in the city, D, F and EL1 trails will bring you right back into town. You can get in a full day of riding and still end up back in the city center. Looking for more seat time? The amazing North Shore Loop will take you north to Black Creek then back through Bruce Mines, Thessalon, Blind River and Spanish continued on page 34

then right back to Elliot Lake. Feeling super adventurous? From Elliot Lake you can head north to Chapleau, Wawa and even Hearst! Your only limits are snow and your desire to keep going. Snowmobiling is far from the only thing to do in the City. As much as riders love to, not every second can be spent on your sled. Perhaps your travelling partners are looking for a break from riding. If so, Elliot Lake is a fantastic place to enjoy winter. Bring your downhill skis and enjoy a few runs on Mount Dufour followed by a hot chocolate in the chalet. Snowshoe or walk our countless miles of trails surrounded by rugged natural beauty or cross country ski on one of our groomed trails. With close to 400 lakes in the city, angling is a year round activity. Bring your rod, get some minnows and reel in a big one. Best of all, these activities can be enjoyed just minutes from the center of the City. The City and its partners have some wonderful events planned for the winter. The Snowbirds have their fun run on February 10th, The city is presenting Winterfest February 9-11 and the Elliot Lake Ice Fishing Derby takes place February 24th (last years winner took home a prize of over $21,550 CDN). Sarazin. “We went from having these snowmobiles and drags… we now lease a Gator side-by-side. We purchased our own set of tracks, so we lease a machine every year so we don’t own one. We put our tracks on it, we now have a six-foot wide drag and it’s controlled by key fobs to power it up and down. We have heat, I can take a jacket and boots with me but I can ride without it.” The Sno Drifters are entirely selfsufficient and attribute the club’s annual spaghetti dinner as a solid driver of the budget. The club puts on a delicious spaghetti service that has fed as many as 700-800 people. Sarazin says as a teenager, he wasn’t very involved in the snowmobile operation. Now, being the president of the club and owner of the Dreamland Restaurant & Bar,

he’s continuing what his dad and others in the industry fought so hard for: snowmobile access in the Keweenaw. “It’s a good cutoff if people like that way instead of Lake Linden to Gay trail,” said Sarazin. “They can come through ours and our trail goes from Trail 3 in Dollar Bay and travels into 122, which goes into Lake Linden and Gay. The Dollar Bay side of the lake is a good section of the road. We just can’t get easements to run a trail. Once you hit Dreamland and you go off behind then it’s wooded trail the whole way.” Ride responsibly on the Dreamland Trails. Sarazin says they’re not like anything else you’ve ridden before. In this neck of the woods, low speeds are your friend. Be respectful of private property owners who open

up their own backyards so that snowmobiling can live on. Only ride across approved routes in Dreamland and make sure you stay on the trails. “Our trails are six feet wide, windy, narrow, up and down. Groomed, but you don’t go fast on our trails. I mean period. It’s not railroad grade like the main trails are,” said Sarazin. “It’s very windy. It’s through the woods

and some places it’s only six feet wide and through the trees.” The Dreamland Restaurant & Bar is a warm, cozy beacon through winter to snowmobilers. Sarazin grew up in the family’s home above the bar, where his sister lives now with her family. The multi-generational energy and connection can be felt through the building. It’s a reprieve to fuel up along the trails and you can pull right up on your machine. The bar opened in 1912 with Sarazin’s great grandfather. It went through a few owners until 1998 when it returned to the family. Inside, you’ll find a comfortable pit-stop for your crew to hang and thaw out. Look for a sign outside with the names of the original pioneers who broke ground on today’s Dreamland Trails and behind the bar for a snippet of the building’s history. “On the backbar, there’s a tag on it that says the Amalgamated Woodworkers Union Made,” said Sarazin. “It you look them up they made a bunch of backbars for the breweries in between 1800 and 1900. MY great grandfather got this from another bar, so it fits… The main part of the bar has one mahogany plant 18 inches wide, and 29 feet long. You’re not going to find a mahogany board like that now.” Take a seat, relax and recharge before continuing north on your way to Gay, Lac La Belle or Copper Harbor or south toward the Portage Canal. Ride the Dreamland Trails this winter, test out the new section of Trail 3, and find out what makes the Keweenaw a prime snowmobile destination in the Midwest. Follow the Valley Sno Drifters on Facebook, and stay up to date with what’s new in the Keweenaw on www.visitkeweenaw.com. Keep an eye out for the club’s spaghetti dinner, which will be held in early February 2024. Prepare for your ride ahead of time and check out a Keweenaw snowmobile trails map. 1972 SKI DOO TNT BY BRYAN LEHR CONTRIBUTING WRITER

A

s I said in a previous article, I will talk about my father’s 1972 TNT 775. This was his second sled that he bought from what was known back then as Jim Harringtons Sport Craft in Lapeer Michigan. His first sled was a 1969 Skidoo Nordic 371, also bought at the same place. He rode his TNT for many years. As a small child I rode with my dad in front of him on this sled and it was

a warm sled to ride on with the motor right in front of me throwing off all the heat from the fan cooled motor. It was a high compression motor and he liked to race with it a lot as he had a field behind his home where people from around town would gather. He also had a good friend that he rode with up north. He had a lot of fun with that sled. I always wanted to take the sled out for a ride, but dad said it was too much sled for me.

42 | NOVEMBER • 2023 • MICHIGAN SNOWMOBILER + ORV

When I was around twelve years old, I asked again to take it for a ride on the lake where my grandparents had a cabin. My dad said if I could start the sled, I could ride it. The sled had such a high compression motor, that the rope was very hard to pull. As we were out on the lake that day, when my dad had just got done riding it and the motor was nice and warm, so I jumped on it and said dad can I ride it and he said if you can pull it, continued on page 44

you can ride it, so I grabbed the rope and gave it a pull and the sled started. He looked at me in amazement and said just take it easy as I pulled away. From that day on, I always loved that sled. As the years went on my father quit riding the sled and stored it in the shed. He wanted to sell it several times and I wouldn’t let him as I said I wanted to restore it someday but had no idea how to restore a sled as I mentioned before. Well, when I got into restoring sleds, I got the sled from him, but I didn’t restore it. I decided to leave it as it was when he stopped riding. It was in good condition; I did get it running again just like it was when he put it in the shed. Since I didn’t restore it, I was able to purchase another TNT 775 from my good friend Doug, which I did restore. He bought it from a guy close to his

home and told Doug that he had bought it from Harringtons also. Wow, how cool is that to have two sleds from the same place. My father’s sled had a slide suspension and the one I got had bogie wheels. So, I compared the serial numbers on the sled only to find out that they were ninety numbers apart. Probably due to the different suspensions. I started tearing the sled down and things looked pretty good. The motor seemed to have good compression, so I cleaned it up and was going to run it as it was. The frame only had surface rust on it, and it got sandblasted. It cleaned up well and with a few minor dents to fix, it was ready for painting after a good coat of primer. As usual the bogies were a lot of work to clean and paint. Then onto the hood with what we all know is a big continued on page 46

he purchased it years ago. I was proud to have a sled to match his after all these years. After I restored the sled, I was able to take it out on a ride with my dad on his sled and we had a great time riding the same two sleds. He really enjoyed himself and said that was fun to ride the old sled with me again. The 1972 TNT was only made one year with a white

stripe down the middle of the hood and a black stripe on both sides of the white. The sides of the hood were ski-doo yellow. A few years later, another friend of mine said he had a 1972 TNT 440 that was his father in laws that he wanted to sell me as he knew that I liked the 72 TNTs. The neat thing about this sled was that it had an emblem on the hood from you guessed it, Harringtons. So, I restored this sled and now have three TNTs from the same snowmobile shop In Lapeer Michigan. The only thing I still need for the 72 TNT sled is another Harrington emblem, so I can show that they are Triplets. •
