Chanukah Treats

F

riendship Circle’s Dakota Bread is getting ready for Chanukah. They’re making all kinds of Chanukah treats, from cookies to donuts, and cupcakes with Chanukah gelt on top.

Cookie production started the week before Chanukah and will continue for several weeks. Dakota Bread will also be selling paint-your-own Chanukah cookie kits, which include a package of dreidel and menorah cookies, as well as colored icing.

During Chanukah, the bakery will also be giving out free donuts as Chanukah treats to kids who come in.

“It’s a joyful time, when thinking about those sizzling donuts and latkes and all the sweet desserts,” says Friendship Circle co-founder Bassie Shemtov. “And there’s a real community and family energy that’s going to be going on at Dakota.”

They’re also offering a special cookie with the message “a little bit of light pushes away a lot of darkness.”

The Chanukah story celebrates the Maccabees’ military victory over the Greek army and also the miracle of the oil – while there was only enough oil to light the menorah for one day, it burned for eight days and eight nights.

hana Drissman, 7, likes when her mom tells her Chanukah stories. She, her mom, sister Tzippora, 10, and brother Peretz, 4, sit in their family room by the menorah and read Hershel and the Hanukkah Goblins by Eric Kimmel.

Ask her what to put on a latke, and she’ll tell you.

“Applesauce and sour cream!”

Tzippora can’t wait to play games and have fun with her family this Chanukah. They play dreidel with gelt or jellybeans, and light their menorah by the front door.

The Bais Yaakov fifth-grader is learning about Chanukah at school and says she sees the message of Chanukah as one of bravery. “Yehuda Maccabee [Judah] stood up with all his other brothers so they could fight against the Greeks,” she says. “They could have just said, ‘No, I don’t want to do this’ and run away.”

Make Some Latkes!

Want to make your own latkes? Grab a grown-up and get cooking with this recipe from PJ Library!

Ingredients 1 large russet potato, peeled 1 large zucchini, peeled ½ head of cauliflower ½ yellow onion 1 clove of garlic, finely minced ½ cup all-purpose flour 1 tablespoon baking powder 2 large eggs 1 teaspoon kosher salt ½ teaspoon pepper Vegetable oil for frying

Preparation 1. Grate together potato, zucchini, cauliflower and onion. Use a food processor to make this step faster.

2. Wrap the vegetable mixture in a cheesecloth or a lightweight kitchen towel and squeeze out as much liquid as possible.

3. In a large bowl, combine vegetables with garlic, flour, baking powder, eggs, salt and pepper.

4. In a frying pan, heat ½ inch of oil on medium-high. Carefully drop a heaping tablespoon of latke mixture into oil.

5. Fry for roughly 2 minutes, then flip and fry the other side.

6. Transfer each latke to a paper towellined platter.

7. Serve while warm.

Last player standing wins.
