S

ome people race for the glory. Chris Olds races because he can’t imagine not doing it.

For 25 years, the Iron Dog — the world’s longest and toughest snowmobile race — has been his calling. He’s signed up 25 times, raced 23, and won four. He’s placed in the top five an astonishing 17 times. Those numbers alone would cement any racer’s legacy. But for Olds, the real story isn’t about the stats or the trophies. It’s about what happens in between — the grind, the grit, the obsession that keeps pulling him back to Alaska’s unforgiving wilderness year after year.

“It’s an addiction,” he says simply. “It’s fun, it’s adventurous — every year I still want to go back.”

THE MAKING OF A RACER Olds didn’t even start riding snowmachines until his mid-twenties. “I was around them,” he says, “but I wasn’t one of those kids who grew up racing across frozen rivers.”

That changed in his early twenties and discovered freedom on snow. “Once I started riding, everything opened up,” he recalls. “You could go anywhere — lakes, rivers, mountains. It was pure freedom.”

A few years later, he read an article about the Iron Dog, a race that stretched 2,000 miles across the Alaskan frontier. It wasn’t the competition that hooked him — it was the adventure. “I wasn’t a racer,” he says. “I just thought it sounded like an incredible continued on page 8

way to see Alaska. That sense of exploration — that’s what got me.”

In 1998, Olds entered his first snowcross race and finished second in the pro class. “Right out of the gate, I was hooked,” he says.

By 1999, he was racing every kind of event he could find — crosscountry, hill climbs, snowcross. The next year, when a friend offered him $5,000 in sponsorship money to enter the Iron Dog, he didn’t hesitate. “I talked to a buddy about partnering up and we were all in, and the funny thing is we had no idea that $5,000 would barely scratch the surface,” he laughs.

That first Iron Dog was a crash course in endurance, logistics, and humility. Olds and his partner ran in the top five until running out of fuel, finishing ninth. “You replay everything in your head — the what-ifs,” he says. “If we’d done this, if we’d done that. You finish knowing you can do better. And that’s what keeps you coming back.”

And he did come back. Every year.

The next few seasons were filled with close calls and near misses — running in the lead only to lose it to mechanical problems, or a crash, or a bad patch of luck. In 2003, the race was canceled. In 2004, his machine hit a rock so hard it crushed the steering and drive system. But by 2010, all that perseverance paid off.

That year, Olds and his partner crossed the finish line first. “It was an amazing feeling,” he says. “We’d put in so much work.

Everything just came together.”

A year later, they won again — back-to-back champions in the most brutal race on snow. “That second win meant everything,” he says. “It proved the first one

wasn’t a fluke. That was the most gratifying of all.”

A RACE UNLIKE ANY OTHER The Iron Dog covers seemingly endless miles of deep snow, open tundra, and frozen rivers — conditions that test every muscle, every nerve, and every decision a rider makes. And it’s different every year due to weather conditions and the terrain.

“You have to be a mechanic, a navigator, and an endurance athlete all at once,” Olds says.

“If something breaks, you fix it.

If visibility drops, you trust your instincts. And you can’t ride beyond your ability. The trail punishes mistakes.”

Some years it’s the body that takes the beating. “The first day

is always tough — getting to McGrath is rough and bumpy, and you’re fighting to stay loose,” he explains. “Other times, it’s mental.

You’re running wide open for 100 miles at a time. You can’t lose focus. There’s no room for secondguessing.”

He remembers what veterans used to tell him early on. “They said, ‘You’ll feel like you’ve been spanked a thousand times.’ They weren’t kidding.”

Even after breaking his back and missing last year’s race, Olds is already looking ahead. “It’s hard to sit one out,” he admits. “This race has a way of calling you back.”

That drive has made him not only one of the most decorated racers in Iron Dog history but also continued on page 12

one of its most respected mentors.

In 2007, he and a friend launched the Rookie Workshop, a hands-on training session designed to help first-time racers prepare for the realities of the trail — from clothing and nutrition to mental strategy.

“When I started, there wasn’t much information out there,” he says. “We wanted to change that — to give new teams the right tools and the right mindset. I want everyone to be successful.”

His advice to rookies is practical, hard-earned, and humble: “Keep it simple. Don’t chase a win; chase a finish. Ask questions. Stick to what you know works. And when things go wrong — and they will — stay calm, fix it, and get back on the trail.

Everyone goes through it. The key is

to just keep moving forward.”

TRAINING FOR THE LONG GAME When asked how he trains, he says he ramps up each fall with a mix of cardio, endurance, and longdistance rides. “You can’t substitute time on the sled,” he says. “You have to be out there.”

He’s learned to balance conditioning with preparation. “You don’t want to be too lean — you need reserves out there,” he says.

“It’s endurance over aesthetics.”

That pragmatism extends to every part of his preparation, and it doesn’t deviate much. “Once I know what works, I stick with it,” he said. You never want to be trying something new on race day. People

do that and it always comes back to bite them.”

After more than two decades, countless miles, and a lifetime of lessons, Olds remains as humble as ever. “You never master this race,” he says. “Every year it teaches you something new.”

For him, the Iron Dog is less about finishing first and more about what it reveals — resilience, patience, and the sheer will to keep going. And he isn’t done learning yet. In 2026, Olds will return to the starting line for the 24th time, teaming up with fellow veteran Ryan Sottosanti.

“To me, it’s still about the adventure,” he says. “The Iron Dog pushes you, humbles you, and reminds you what you’re capable of.

That’s why I keep coming back.” •

is Rising to the Top of Junior Girls Snocross Regionally and Nationally

T

he state of Michigan is starting to gain some reputation with the national Snocross series. As more riders make their way through the ranks or start to contend for championships, the more people take notice. It also helps that Michigan has a growing facility, which is becoming one of the best in the country. It also helps that, along with the facility, there is a regional series that is helping develop young riders.

One of the riders who has started in the Michigan Snocross series and now competes at the national circuit

is Manton’s Eva Gifford. After starting to contest more nationals last season, Gifford is primed to compete not only for championships in MSX but on the national circuit as well. As Gifford begins her championship campaigns in the Junior girls’ divisions on the national and regional circuits, we wanted to get to know her better: How did you get started in Racing?

“I started when I was eight years old. My dad bought me my first 200 snowmobile. After we attended my first

real practice, I fell in love with the sport.”

What is your favorite thing about racing?

“I love all of the traveling to different states and different tracks that we get to race at.”

Out of all the places you have been, where is your favorite place to race?

“Northern Power Race Park would have to be my favorite. It is located in Mancelona, which makes it close to my hometown. This makes it easy to get to whenever we need to go get some practice in.”

What is a goal you have for this season?

“I really want to get the junior girls’ championship this season, both at Michigan Snocross and the Amsoil

Championship Snocross series.”

If you had a role model, who would it be?

“Inanna Hauger and Ava McCurdy are so cool and they started the same way I did. When I watch them, it makes me want to be better and be a role model for the next generation of racers. “ What do you feel is the biggest challenge for you in racing?

“The toughest thing in racing is getting the starts and trying to get the hole shot. This way I can start up front with the top girls in my division. Everyone wants to win, so it can be very intimidating.

The Snocross season is two weeks into the 2025-2026 year and Gifford has had a dream start.

In the regional series, Gifford had a dominating first two rounds. She

won both of her heat races and the final on Saturday. The sweep was completed on Sunday with another two heat wins and a final. She left the opening weekend with a points lead.

As the national season opened in Ironwood, Michigan, on December 12 and 13, Gifford would have another strong start to the season. She ended up on the podium in junior girls 9-13 in round one, with a strong third-place finish. On Saturday, Gifford backed up her podium in round one with another third-place finish. The first two podiums of her national career. Gifford leaves Ironwood, currently sitting in third place in points. Already two weeks into the season, she is tracking towards accomplishing her goals. “ I was so happy and proud of myself for getting on the podium all weekend. To see my hard work,

Gifford will look to take another big step this season, as she prepares to compete in the Snowcross Border Cup at Northern Power Race Park on January 3 and 4.

A good showing against national competition could only keep the momentum rolling. While also helping her maintain her points lead in the MSX series.

After the Border Cup, Gifford will return to the national

circuit by heading to Shakopee, Minnesota, for round three and four of the ISOC Amsoil Championship Snocross presented by Brunt.

Time for Some History — and Clarification

T

he issue of wheeled vehicles operating on groomed snowmobile trails is not new. This discussion began around 2008 with the Michigan Snowmobile Association (MSA) and continued with MISORVA. The legislation has been debated in the past is a direct result of a Land Use Order proposed by the Karen Michigan Department of Middendorp Natural Resources (DNR) Executive to both the Snowmobile Director MISORVA Advisory Workgroup (SAW) and the ORV Advisory Workgroup (ORVAW) around 2019.

That proposal brought long-standing concerns to the surface and initiated broader conversations about whether existing laws governing motorized recreation were still appropriate.

MISORVA became a connecting point in this process — partially due to proposed changes from the DNR, and partially

because users themselves were demanding improvements, clarity, and safer access.

GROWTH, CONFLICT, AND SAFETY With the rapid explosion of ORV use, conflict was inevitable. User numbers grew exponentially in a short period of time, while trail miles did not. During this growth, the DNR and legislators allowed dual-use trails with limited protections for groomed snowmobile trails.

The result was increasing mixed-use traffic, creating real safety concerns.

The logic is similar to minimum speed requirements on highways — predictability matters. Mixed speeds, vehicle sizes, and traction types create unsafe conditions. This issue is fundamentally about safety.

PA 288 AND UNINTENDED CONSEQUENCES With changes to Public Act 288, more forest and seasonal roads were opened

to ORV use. SAW was consulted on the anticipated impact. At that time, ORV use was relatively minimal, and there was no realistic way to forecast how quickly and dramatically it would increase.

As trail damage became more visible, concern escalated. For nearly a decade, motion after motion was passed at SAW meetings requesting a Director’s Order to protect volunteer grooming efforts by closing designated groomed snowmobile trails to wheeled vehicles during grooming season.

VOLUNTEERS AT THE BREAKING POINT — AND PROGRESS Trail maintenance groups are tired — and they are volunteers. Choosing Your Steering Style:

Wheel vs Sticks for Your New Groomer

W

hen a snowmobile club orders a new Prinoth groomer, they get to pick their preferred steering interface: a steering wheel or “stick” / lever controls. The choice may feel subtle on paper, but in practice it can affect control, ergonomics, operator fatigue, and how intuitive the machine feels. In this article, we explore the pros and cons of each steering mechanism, which can be used as a conversation starter with your club before you buy your next machine.

STEERING IN SNOW GROOMERS Before we dig into the pros and cons, a bit of context: • Snow groomers are driven by hydrostatic hydraulic systems, with each track (left and right) driven independently.

Steering is achieved by differential track speed (one track moving faster/slower relative to the other).

• Whether you use a steering wheel or levers, the operator’s inputs get translated into hydraulic commands to modulate flow/pressure to track drive motors.

• Many modern groomers (including Prinoth’s) support “cruise” or fixed-RPM modes, decoupling speed control from steering input, which changes how the two steering styles feel.

With that in mind, here’s how the two

steering philosophies compare.

STEERING WHEEL ADVANTAGES 1. Familiarity & Intuitive Feel Many operators are already accustomed to steering wheels (cars, trucks, tractors).

Turning left causes left, turning right causes right — the mental model is simple.

This can shorten the training curve, especially for operators coming from wheeled steering backgrounds.

2. Precise, Low-Effort Fine Adjustments With a well-tuned hydraulic assist / power steering system, small corrections can be made with minimal effort.

3. Excellent for Holding a Line For long straight runs or slow transitions, the wheel allows the operator to “steer into” a trajectory gently, holding a heading with minimal input.

WHEEL CHALLENGES 1. Less Direct Feel / Response Because the wheel is an indirect interface (turn wheel → controller → hydraulic system), there can be a lag or damping.

In soft, uneven snow, that “buffer” might reduce responsiveness compared to direct lever control.

2. Mechanical Limits You can’t spin the wheel infinitely; the

mechanical travel may be constrained. In tight turns or sharp adjustments, one may reach the stopping point of the wheel.

3. Complexity & Maintenance More mechanical parts (steering column, bearings, linkages) may increase maintenance or susceptibility to wear.

4. Cognitive Disconnect in Some Conditions Some operators feel that a wheel doesn’t “feel like a machine” — they lose the visceral connection of direct control.

STEERING LEVERS / STICKS In this style, two control levers (one for each track) are pushed forward or pulled back, either independently or in a coordinated fashion, to modulate speed and direction.

ADVANTAGES 1. Very Direct, Responsive Control Because each lever directly controls forward/back pressure to each track, the operator often enjoys heightened sensitivity and responsiveness. Track differential is more directly manipulated.

2. Aggressive Maneuvering & Tight Turns In tight terrain or steep switchbacks, the operator can apply more aggressive

Today, many dirt and snow clubs are now working together, recognizing that collaboration is necessary to sustain Michigan’s trail systems.

WHO PAYS — AND WHERE THE PINCH IS Many snowmobile trails that would normally be inaccessible to wheeled vehicles in winter are now passable only because snowmobile trail permits ($52 each) pay to groom a smooth, icy base.

Some in the ORV community feel restricted, believing their 12-month season is being reduced. However, all other pathways and routes remain unchanged. The issue is limited to dualuse sections that are actively groomed.

Currently, the snowmobile program repeatedly pays: • For multiple grooming passes to maintain a smooth base • For materials and labor to repair rut damage caused by wheeled vehicles on a snow only trail.

If a trail is designated ORV or dualuse, yet the damage is clearly caused by wheeled vehicles during off-season use, snowmobilers are still paying for the repairs. That is the pinch point. If a trail is truly dual-use, both user groups share responsibility.

WHY THE JOINT ASSOCIATION FORMED Snowmobilers supported the creation

of a joint association due to increasing discomfort and safety concerns on groomed trails, and in hopes of a more cohesive approach to motorized recreation. Many ORV riders also supported this effort, with new members joining to advocate for balanced solutions.

However, a portion of the ORV community rejected the concept outright.

HISTORY REPEATING ITSELF The DNR has long tracked snowmobile fatalities, largely because snowmobilers were the first organized motorized recreation group and were heavily scrutinized. ORV fatalities are now also tracked, but reports often lack critical details such as vehicle type — dirt bike,

differential commands (e.g. holding one lever slightly back, the other forward) in an instant. This can aid sharper turning, pivoting, or tight track corrections.

3. Good for Experienced Operators Those who “feel” the machine often prefer sticks — it gives them the leverage and responsiveness they want.

Many long-time groomer operators see stick cats as more precise or connected.

4. Simplicity & Robustness Fewer parts in the mechanical linkage of steering (no steering column, less complex joints) mean less to maintain or calibrate. In cold, vibration-heavy applications, this can be an advantage.

CHALLENGES 1. Higher Learning Curve for New Operators For someone not familiar with dual-stick steering, coordinating smooth curves without jerky transitions can be tricky.

ATV, or side-by-side — which can skew data and limit meaningful analysis.

Decades ago, the DNR “owned the woods,” and snowmobilers were seen as intruders. ORV use was minimal, and conflict was limited. Over time, motorized recreation matured.

Snowmobilers, seeking summer recreation, embraced ORVs, and the DNR encouraged a simple concept: snowmobiles in winter, ORVs in summer.

As ORV equipment evolved, so did comfort, speed, and capability — leading to year-round use. ORV participation exploded. Trails became increasingly crowded, safety concerns escalated, and once again, trail mileage

Operators may overcorrect, producing “zig-zag” behavior.

2. Operator Fatigue / Arm Strain Holding and moving the levers continuously, especially on long shifts or rough terrain, can strain the forearms or shoulders more than a wheel movement might.

3. Less Natural for Straight-Line Holding Maintaining a straight path may require continuous micro corrections — the operator can’t “rest” a hand on a wheel and drift slightly.

WHICH ONE FITS BEST FOR YOUR OPERATION? Here are factors to consider when selecting your steering style on a groomer: 1. Operator Profile & Experience If your operator pool includes many who have driven trucks, tractors, snowmobiles, etc., wheel steering may seem more accessible. If you have veteran groomers used to stick cats, lever style may feel more

failed to keep pace with user growth.

The combination of vehicle size, speed, and mixed traction created a dangerous environment.

THE 2018 DIRECTOR’S ORDER PROPOSAL In 2018, the DNR proposed a Director’s Order that would have closed all ORV access from December 1 through May 1. Both SAW and ORVAW rejected the proposal, citing major concerns: • What about low-snow years?

• Why extend closures through May? • Why such a broad, inflexible approach?

THE BOTTOM LINE Snowmobile trail permits pay to groom

2. Terrain & Grooming Strategy In tight, technical terrain (steep gullies, tight switchbacks, narrow trails), the extra responsiveness and sculpting capacity of levers can shine. For long, open trails, wheel control may allow smoother straight lines and reduce fatigue.

3. Maintenance Philosophy If you prefer fewer moving parts, simpler calibration, and a robust setup, levers may offer lower long-term maintenance overhead. However, both systems in modern Prinoth groomers are built to high durability standards.

WHEEL OR STICKS? THERE’S NO WRONG ANSWER! At the end of the night, it’s more about the operator’s preferences than anything else.

We recommend that clubs discuss the pros and cons, then get in a demo machine before they decide. There is a learning curve in all grooming operations, and sticks might just be the answer for your club. ■

Looking Back

A

s most people do around Thanksgiving time, I sit back and enjoy the company of my family and friends, I like to take a few moments on those days off to reflect and look at what is around me and how far I have come in my life. This year has marked some incredible changes for me, all sparked by a conversation in the fall of 2023 with current MISORVA president at the time, Paul Anderson. Paul and I knew each other from our activity in the Michigan Boondockers club, being active CCC members and our love for dirt bikes, so it only made sense for him to reach out to me about joining MISORVA and trying to help connect the dots with one of the many motorized recreational activities, dirt bikes. Nervous as ever, I set off on a trip to Newberry to attend my first ever MISORVA meeting on December 2nd, 2023.

At the time my wife thought I was crazy, she just didn’t understand yet…. Because I thought I did understand why I was setting off on this journey….

Surrounded by many strangers who enjoy the same activities as myself I anxiously awaited the start of the meeting; this was by far the most I had ventured out of my comfort zone in a long time. With that over, and a new venture ahead of me I jumped headfirst into this volunteer thing by becoming the Dirt Bike Liaison and joining the Legislative Committee.

This is where things got good, fostering relationships that will most likely last a lifetime was a benefit and learning how things work with the Snowmobile and ORV programs was educational, of which I am still learning.

With such an educational 2024 season under my belt, I was set to keep forging ahead with being more involved, I was also more involved with my own motorcycle club by helping to mark event routes and sweep ride at the end of the events and maintain trails, something that truly makes me happy. It was also the last meeting in 2024 for MISORVA when I was finally able to get some facetime with the Executive Director, Karen. We had some great conversations, and she was really diving deep into the questions of the dirt bike world and how we do things like maintaining the trails and hosting rides and how we even have some of the same issues with the DNR/State that many other clubs statewide have had over the years or still have currently.

Looking back on 2025, wow what a ride! In February Karen called me up at the last minute and asked if I wanted to attend the State of The State in Lansing, I jumped at the opportunity to

help show a MISORVA presence. Not knowing exactly what to expect I was a little bit nervous again, but little did Karen and I know we would get to have some good educational conversations that would help steer future conversations.

In March we had some technological issues that stopped the Groomer Workshop dead in its tracks (no pun intended), but Karen and Gina pivoted and made some magic happen to get some virtual options availed to the attendees, one of those options was a presentation I was asked to create and facilitate that was spurred by a question from a State Representative during a meeting at the State of The State. Again, I was venturing into uncharted waters for me. And what a controversial presentation that was! I felt like a deer in the headlights with the flack I was taking for what was a simple question with what I thought was a simple answer, yes or no…

I took that with a grain of salt at Karens request as I was ready to crawl back under my rock from which I had come from…. As I was still trying to wrap my head around one question, why am I doing this? And you guessed it, my wife still thought I was crazy…

At the end of March, we had one of the worst ice storms that northern Michigan has ever seen, crippling not only the local economies but testing the strength of communities. The snowmobile and ORV trails took a huge hit, the devastation in the woods was unbelievable, the clubs and trail maintainers couldn’t help but feel defeated.

Many clubs have felt a decline of membership numbers over the years; the long-term members are aging out and there are not enough new young members joining back up.

This is a struggle for all motorized recreation clubs, including the motorcycle club I belong to. However, many volunteers showed up when it counted, and many new people joined clubs because of this. People knew what we have and saw firsthand how close we came to losing some of it and I believe it made a lasting impact on those new club members.

In April MISORVA sent 4 representatives to the ACSA DC Fly In, I was blessed to be one of those. That was the experience of a lifetime, even though I was more nervous than I had ever been… Because this was a long way away from my rock… I would recommend this experience to any of the MISORVA BOD members, meeting with so many people from across the country who are involved and dedicated to their recreation was humbling.

they face, but at the end of the day it showed the meaning of the phrase “There is strength in numbers”!

The remainder of the year was kind of quiet for the exception of all my trips up north to clear trails, however June was very pivotal for me. My motorcycle club president had mentioned he was ready to retire, who would take his place? There were a few options, and a lot of whispers within the club, however our club numbers were in massive decline, and we were thinking it was time to fold it up. I had a conversation with some new and remaining members, and we decided no matter what we would keep it going somehow. Besides, we still had another event to host in October!

Well apparently, when you give some motivational insights to your fellow members that tends to build the foundation for them to vote you in as club president (who knew?) ….

Now, don’t get me wrong, I was and still am honored to be voted in as the Tomahawk Trail Riders club president this past October, but with that new assignment and the new trial maintenance work I will be taking on in 2026, it led me to some major self-reflection. This was also the time I had finally found the answer to my question. Why am I doing this?

In the fall of 2024 at a club ride, it was announced at the prize drawing that my son was one of three generations that rode together on the ride that weekend. My father, myself, and my youngest son rode together like we always do. This was normal and I thought nothing different, until I looked back on that announcement. My son and I even rode sweep together to pull arrows from the route, just like the founding father of the Tomahawk Trail Riders club did with his sons! That is why I am doing this! I am volunteering when and where I can so that many generations can enjoy the motorized recreations of our choice!

I had to make the tough decision not to return as a MISORVA BOD member in 2026. I did renew my membership, well, because there is strength in numbers! And again, volunteer when and where you can, do not overextend yourself as you will burn out very quickly.

All facets of motorized recreation need volunteers, from the club level getting the work done on the ground all the way to the folks fighting on Capitol Hill for your right to recreate, get involved somewhere!

I want to end my reflection with a huge thank you to each and every one of you, from the general membership, the BOD members, the executive level members, all the way to the office staff ! Without people like you we would not continue to have what those that came before us fought so hard to achieve.

All this being noted as an introduction to some very interesting information provided during our I-500 and snowmobile/ORV interview with the 2025 INTERNATIONAL 500 CHAMPIONSHIP TEAM “NELSON RACING. “Let’s get this sled info roll’n, shall we use the famous words heard throughout racing history.....Gentlemen start your conversation.”

Ric: So, Ryan.... How long have you been involved in snowmobile racing?

Ryan: 40 years Ric: At what age and how did you become involved with snowmobile racing in general?

Ryan: Actually, I started doing radar runs at the age of 12 yrs. I did my first cross country race in 1989 at the age of 16yrs.

Ric: When did you first become a team owner?

Ryan: Nine years ago I started Nelson Racing back in 2016 Ric: Prior to becoming a race team owner, did you personally have sled seat time racing? For what team and for how long?

Ryan: I raced cross country racing back in 1990 and from 1990 and from 1991 until 2002 I raced in the “Pro Class” at cross country racing. Those years were a combination of family support and running my own racing operation.

My family has a long history in many forms of snowmobile racing but mainly within the cross country arena.

Ric: What motivated you to become a team owner?

Ryan: After taking several years off from racing to focus on business and family I got the itch to go racing once again. I returned to racing and got back into it through the cross country classic class. I was racing a 1998 Indy just like the old days. I had a friend who wanted to go cross country racing so we successfully campaigned him in the “Semi-Pro” class. He could only race for one year so Polaris put Justin Tate and myself together and later added Aaron Christensen for cross country racing.

Ric: How many race sleds do you currently own and how many do you put on “ice” racing?

Ric: What did you decide to race “Oval ice endurance” racing and is that the only type of snowmobile racing you participate in?

Ryan: I got to know the Bunke’s when I got back into cross country racing and Taylor Bunke asked me to come to the SOO the year he was racing with Cardel Potter to help with mechanics. I did Rookie practice that year and after the overall experience of the race, I was hooked ! LOL, Gabe Bunke warned me that I would get hooked on the sport so it’s all his fault.

Ric: How many team members do you have for each race sled?

Ryan: We have about seven people per sled to “Pit” sleds. These are people who may or may not touch the sled at every pit stop, it depends on what kind of work we are needing at that particular pit stop.

We have a few team members that have other support roles such as radio’s and lap counting.

Ric: How many drivers do you have per sled, what are their names and for fans, what sled number do they ride with?

Ryan : We race two (2) sleds at the I-500. The #28 sled driven by Justin

Ric: Fans are brand loyal, what O.E.M. sleds do you race?

Ryan: We race on Polaris 600R’s Ric: The International 500 hosted at Sault Ste.Marie, Michigan on the ONLY mile oval ice track in North America is certainly the most coveted snowmobile race of its type and there isn’t a bigger stage anywhere worldwide. For

obvious reasons it’s known throughout professional snowmobile racing as the “ONE” oval ice endurance race all teams want to win. It’s the Grand-Daddy of all snowmobile endurance races bar none. That being said, what do you and your drivers like most about racing the International 500 at Sault Ste. Marie?

Ryan: It’s an amazing challenge and experience. I think the draw for our team is that it’s a total team effort so everyone relies on each other to do the job they do in order to win the I-500. Collectively it’s a TOTAL team effort.

Ric: Can you express what it means to you and your team to win the worlds most prestigious professional snowmobile race (The I-500)?

Ryan: It’s surreal to win the I-500. It is the one race all teams want on their resume. It’s humbling one you continued on page 36

run the I-500 and figure out what it takes just to be able to finish the 500 mile race let alone win it. The preparation, strategies and luck it takes just to get to the end of the race in one piece against some of the best competition in snowmobile racing makes it really special. It’s like no other race in the sport of snowmobiling.It truly is NASCAR on ice.

Ric: Speaking of NASCAR and auto racing, I’m sure you’re aware that over the past three off seasons and beyond, I-500 representatives traveled weekly throughout Michigan promoting the sport of oval ice endurance racing. The project was known as the “I-500 Pure-Michigan” summer tour. The objective being to promote the sport of oval ice racing and the I-500 race itself to true race fans thus “bridging” summer racing into winter racing. n the heart of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, where snow blankets the pines and trails stretch for miles, a unique winter tradition is gaining momentum — and changing lives. From February 19–21, 2026, the small town of Hulbert will host a trio of events that blend adrenaline, artistry, and heartfelt purpose: the Tiki 600 Mile Challenge, the Sno Shu Inn Snow Sculpting Festival, and the beloved Tiki Charity Poker Run. At the center of it all is The Iley Knight Initiative, Inc., a nonprofit born from personal experience

and driven by a mission to support families facing lifelong pediatric health challenges. In 2025, the organization raised over $20,000. This year, they’re aiming even higher: a $30,000 goal to help families stay afloat during medical crises.

THE RIDE THAT RALLIES HOPE The Tiki 600 Mile Challenge is not your average snowmobile ride.

Held over three days, February 18–20, this invitation-only event sends riders across more than 600 miles of Michigan’s

eastern Upper Peninsula. Each participant raises pledges to join, and their progress is tracked online — turning every mile into a message of support. The ride is managed by a seasoned, all-volunteer crew, with 100% of proceeds going directly to families in need.

SCULPTING JOY FROM SNOW New for 2026, the Sno Shu Inn Snow Sculpture brings a touch of magic to Hulbert. On February 20–21, champion snow sculptors will transform towering piles of snow into breathtaking creations —including a one-of-akind sculpture designed to drive your sled on and take unique photos. Visitors can enjoy live demonstrations that reveal the artistry and technique behind each frozen masterpiece, offering a rare behind-the-scenes look at this incredible craft.

The Sno Shu Inn, a cozy hub for snowmobilers and outdoor enthusiasts, serves as the festival’s home base. With rustic cabins, wood stoves, and trails just steps away, it’s the perfect setting for a celebration of winter and community.

POKER, PRIZES & PURPOSE On Saturday, February 21, the Tiki Charity Poker Run invites riders of all kinds to join the fun. Starting at the American Legion in Hulbert, the route winds through Brimley, Strongs, Trout Lake, and Rudyard.

Registration is just $25 per hand, and participants can check in online from anywhere. The evening wraps up back at the Legion with prize announcements, door giveaways, and a 50/50 raffle — all in the name of helping families.

WHY IT MATTERS The Iley Knight Initiative is named after 14-year-old Iley Knight, who was born with congenital heart disease (CHD) and continues to face serious health challenges. Her story is the heartbeat of the organization. continued on page 44

WHEEZY Wheezy 440 TX restoration

I

n August of 1974 my dad (Jim Blain) then 21 purchased his first brand new snowmobile, a 1974 Polaris TX 440. from Lockwood Marina in Lake, MI. He nicknamed it Wheezy after the sales lady who sold him his first sled. I am thankful that my dad who does not throw anything away, and I do mean anything, still has the original sales receipt and canceled check from the purchase.

Wheezy was rode from 74’ to 92’ before my brother (Jimmy Blain) blew up the engine in 1992 the year I graduated high school and joined the Army. Wheezy had a long pause in her snowmobiling life after that and sat under tarp in the barn till 2016.

After retiring from the Army in 2014 I now had

some new found time on my hands which re-sparked my dad and I’s coming love and intrest for Vintage Snowmobiles and vintage racing!

Now with the invention of the internet and Snowmobile Facebook groups we where able to find a brand new never ran 440 engine in Canada for $500. This was going to be a cheaper option than sending both cylinders off to be re-chromed.

As mentioned in a previous edition My dad (Jim Blain) worked at Magnus Tractor sales in Clare, Mi. as a Mechanic working on everything from small engines to mid and large size tractors, from 1978 to 2000 His real passion however was “Snowmobiles” and Magnus’s as you may have guessed was also continued on page 48

It was really exciting to see it all strarting to take shape and comeing back to life again like I remembered when I was a kid growing up. The nice thing was that most of the rest of the sled was in really good conditions still, so we did not have to hunt down a lot of extras, The seat is even all original minus my mom (Pam) dieing the seat belt black again as it had faded a bit over the years. My Mom who also has an eye for detail put the new pin striping down the side of the tunnel as you can see in the photo. (photo of Mom pin striping the tunnel) & (mores restoration photos) I have to tell you it brought tears to my eyes to hear Whezzy fire back up again for the first time after 24years! Alot of memories as a kid and new memories that were made spending time as an adult with my dad in the garage together bringing a timeless family treasure back to life. My Dad says its like having a brand new sled again, Just like it was when he first bought it back in 1974!

For those that may be wondering “yes” my dad as I mentioned earlier does not throw anything away does still have the original engine, with the damaged cylinders. We may have to consider restoring it one day? It would be a really nice addition to have the original engine all restored and polished up and display along side Whezzy when we take her around for shows and rides. •
