A
s we approach the second half of the summer, the action around Northern Power Race Park only continues to get hotter. The second season of summer events at the park has continued to build the action. This summer, the park has added an official points-paying series to its schedule. After a few test events last year, the Side-by-Side races have been made into a championship circuit. The season will conclude with a big weekend at NPRP on August 28-30. “We’re excited about our SXS state championship weekend. It is a threeday event with practice Friday, the final round of short course on Saturday, and an enduro race on Sunday. We will be open for racer and spectator camping that weekend, and we will also have a variety of food vendors and other activities during the weekend,” said NPRP Director Rene Maier. continued on page 8

As the park starts to prepare for the big weekend, four drivers are looking to claim their first championships. Emily Blake has won all three main events at NPRP this summer in the Women’s division. However, she holds a slim four-point lead over Alaina Daniels in the standings. The division has featured five full-time drivers, while nine drivers have appeared in the class over the summer. Blake has also proven that she is
not just one to beat in the Women’s division. She also currently holds down the lead in the Sportsman division as well. Blake holds a sixpoint lead over Martin Hendler in a field that has 14 entries on the season. In the other two divisions, Blair Miller holds the points lead in both Pro NA and Pro Turbo. Miller holds a lead of six and five points, respectively, over Kyle Bassett and Matt Henning. The Pro NA division has seen 11 entries line up this

season, while the Pro Turbo has had 17 entries on the starting line. The summers and winters are starting to look similar around NPRP. They have a main series to focus on and a trial event that has taken off to levels never predicted. In the winter, Snocross is the series of focus; however, Ditchbangers have exploded to the point that they have become a points-paying series over the last two seasons. They will make the trip to the fairgrounds in Traverse City to compete as a grandstand event at the Northwestern Michigan Fair. “We’re excited to bring NPRP Pit Bike races to the fair. It is the perfect fair event, as they provide plenty of entertainment and are a fun event to compete in, said Maier. The fair will be a great opportunity for the races to get some eyes on the park and see what the action is really about. The riders will have a stadium feel for their final race of the season, as they compete in front of the fairgoers. •

ome bucket list locations are one-and-done vacation spots. Others have a way of pulling you back, again and again. It’s the charm, the adventure, and maybe even a little bit of magic that makes you start planning your next visit before you’ve even left. The White Lake Area, made up of the sister communities of Montague & Whitehall, is one of those locations. Not meant to merely check of on a list, but to experience again. Around here, you’ll notice the phrase “Live White Lake” everywhere you go. It isn’t just a slogan. It’s a way of embracing everything this area has to ofer. Experience White Lake. Hike White Lake. Dine White Lake. Bike White Lake. Ride White Lake. The White Lake “It” is whatever you want it to be, and out here, it’s an entire mindset. The William Field Memorial Hart-Montague Trail, also considered a state park, stretches 23 miles north from Montague. The White Lake Pathway includes art sculptures along the way, and turns into the Berry Junction Trail headed south into Muskegon. Other great trails can be found at Clear Springs Nature Preserve, Duck Creek Trails, and Duck Lake State Park. ome people lose their love of recreation long before they stop riding. Not because the trails disappear. Not because they can no longer enjoy the outdoors. But because every conversation about their recreation becomes another retelling of an old disappointment. There is a kind of prison with no bars. It is built one memory at a time. Every disappointment becomes another brick. Every conversation replayed over the years adds another layer. Long after the people involved Karen Middendorp have retired, changed roles, or even passed away, Executive the wall remains. Director I have watched this pattern develop within our MISORVA recreation community. It rarely introduces itself as bitterness. More often, it wears the mask of anger. Perhaps someone felt ignored. Perhaps a decision years ago genuinely disappointed them. Those feelings may have been completely justified. But when disappointment becomes the
lens through which every future event is viewed, something changes. • Every success is questioned. • Every volunteer effort is viewed with suspicion. • Every accomplishment is interpreted as manipulation or a money grab. • Eventually, history itself begins to change. When the Michigan Snowmobile Association was first formed, many riders felt betrayed because new regulations restricted where they could ride. Yet those same changes ultimately produced tremendous gains in where snowmobilers could legally ride. What felt like a setback at the time helped create one of the nation’s premier trail systems. Legitimate disappointment can slowly become lifelong resentment, even though the volunteers serving today may have had nothing to do with decisions made decades ago. They simply inherited the responsibility of protecting and improving the recreation we all enjoy.

There is an important difference between disagreement and a grudge. A disagreement allows people to say, “We see this differently.” A grudge takes up permanent residence. It requires constant maintenance. It must be fed with fresh interpretations of old events or it begins to fade. Social media can make that maintenance easier, where opinions—both informed and uninformed—circulate endlessly. One season, the criticism is directed toward the ORV community. The next season it is snowmobiling. Sometimes one program appears to be receiving more attention than the other. The common thread is often not examined because the focus remains on the latest grievance rather than the larger picture. Comparison fuels this cycle. It creates the feeling that someone else received something we deserved, whether that is actually true or not. MISORVA works to represent all forms of motorized recreation. At times, one issue naturally demands more attention than another, but protecting trail access, improving funding, and strengthening recreation benefits everyone. Motorized recreation contributes to the economic fabric of Michigan. Riders support small businesses, restaurants, hotels, gas stations, and local communities from the southern border to the Upper Peninsula. Every successful trail system strengthens communities across our state. Most importantly, it gives families and friends the opportunity to discover those quiet places that make every ride memorable. Comparison will always find something to resent if that is what we are searching for. It does not require injustice. It only requires attention pointed in the wrong direction. Psychologists describe a process known as narrative reconstruction. Human memory is not a perfect recording. Every time we revisit a memory, our current emotions influence how we remember it. Someone who is angry today may genuinely remember an event differently than they remembered it twenty years ago. That is why two people can sincerely say,

“That isn’t what happened.” Sometimes one person is remembering the event itself. The other is remembering the story that has been repeated over the years. Many riders quietly carry the belief that our recreation would be better today if someone decades ago had simply made different decisions. Perhaps some decisions truly could have been better. But remaining anchored to those decisions gives yesterday’s problems authority over today’s opportunities. Volunteers who have spent years brushing trails, installing signs, attending meetings, completing paperwork, raising funds, and advocating for riders sometimes find themselves recast as villains in a story they spent their lives trying to improve. Acts of service are interpreted as attempts at control. Good intentions become viewed through the filter of old resentment. Meanwhile, the work continues. Snowmobilers and ORV riders also face a choice. We can measure ourselves against one another, or we can recognize that stronger motorized recreation benefits us all. When one local club succeeds, that success should be celebrated—not viewed as proof that another group somehow lost. Progress is not a limited resource. Advocacy requires accountability, and accountability works in every direction. MISORVA strives to provide that accountability by maintaining strong relationships with legislators, encouraging transparency, and representing riders at key decision-making points. It is important to remember that our elected legislators provide oversight of the agencies that manage our recreation programs. When riders speak respectfully and constructively, those voices matter. The most dangerous prison is the one built from old grievances. Its bars are made from memories. Its locks are made from resentment. The key is personal responsibility. That key has often been within reach all along. The question is not whether the door can be unlocked. The question is whether we are willing to leave the familiar cell behind and help build the future of the recreation we all love. Time to get on board with shaping the future! ■

very successful club, state association, and national organization has one thing in common: volunteers. They are the foundation upon which organizations are built, the people who dedicate their time, talents, and energy to something bigger than themselves. Volunteers are the boots on the ground who get the work done. They are the individuals clearing trails, organizing events, conducting safety training, raising funds, maintaining equipment, serving on committees, recruiting new
members, and representing the interests of their communities. They are also the volunteers behind the scenes who spend countless hours planning meetings, managing finances, preparing reports, coordinating communications, writing grant applications, and working through the administrative details that keep organizations functioning. In many ways, these dedicated men and women are the unsung heroes of clubs and organizations everywhere. They rarely seek recognition, and often their work goes unnoticed by the very people who benefit from it. Yet without their commitment and dedication, many organizations would simply cease to exist. The Backbone of the Motorized Recreation Community
This is especially true within the motorized recreation community. Whether your passion is
snowmobiling, ATV riding, UTV adventures, dual-sport motorcycling, off-road recreation, or other forms of motorized outdoor activity, volunteers are the reason many of these opportunities are available today. The average rider may only see the finished product: a well-maintained trail system, a successful event, a detailed trail map, or a fun group ride. What they often don’t see are the hundreds—sometimes thousands—of volunteer hours invested to make those experiences possible. Volunteers spend evenings and weekends: • Maintaining and improving trails • Installing and repairing signage • Clearing downed trees and brush • Grooming snowmobile routes • Organizing rides and community events continued on page 22

• Conducting safety and education programs • Working with landowners • Coordinating with public agencies • Raising funds for equipment and operations • Recruiting and mentoring new members • Promoting responsible recreation These efforts not only enhance the riding experience but also help ensure that motorized recreation remains safe, sustainable, and respected by the broader public. Protecting the Right to Ride
Perhaps one of the most important— and least visible—roles volunteers perform is legislative advocacy. While many riders focus on enjoying the trails, volunteers at the local, state, and national levels are often hard at work protecting access and defending the future of the sport. Legislative and regulatory issues can impact where people ride, how trails are funded, what equipment requirements exist, and whether access to public lands is maintained or restricted. Without strong representation, important
decisions affecting recreation can be made without the voice of the riding community being heard. At the local level, volunteers attend township, city, county, and land-use meetings. They work with elected officials, parks departments, and landowners to address concerns, develop new opportunities, and maintain positive relationships within their communities. At the state level, volunteers and association leaders monitor legislation, attend hearings, meet with lawmakers, and advocate for policies that support motorized recreation. They help educate elected officials about the economic impact of recreational tourism, the importance of trail funding, and the value that organized recreation brings to local communities. At the national level, volunteers work through larger organizations that advocate for access to public lands, sensible regulations, recreational funding, and policies that ensure future generations can continue to enjoy the outdoors. These organizations often represent the collective voice of thousands of riders and clubs across the country.
Most riders will never attend a legislative hearing, testify before a committee, or meet with lawmakers. Yet every rider benefits when volunteers step forward to do so. These individuals often spend countless hours researching issues, building relationships, and advocating for the interests of the recreation community. Simply put, the trails we enjoy today may not be available tomorrow without dedicated volunteers willing to fight for them. More Than a Hobby
Volunteering is about much more than meetings and maintenance projects. It is about protecting a way of life. It is about preserving traditions, creating opportunities for families, and ensuring that future generations can enjoy the same experiences we enjoy today. The friendships built through volunteering often become lifelong connections. Volunteers develop leadership skills, learn how organizations operate, and gain a sense of pride and accomplishment that comes from making a meaningful contribution. ■

Passion The volunteers who power the I-500 all year long

M
any times people ask the question. When do you start preparing for the I-500? The answer is immediately after the last race is completed. That’s right. Over five decades of racing, the I-500 has grown to the point where we have to work all year round now. This isn’t simply a seasonal sport. As you read this article keep in mind the I-500 is the ONLY professional race in the world operated by volunteers who aren’t paid for their efforts. Five decades of dedicated volunteers now work year round to make this event possible and what it is today. So let’s take a look at some behind-thescenes committee work that happens during the off months as we prepare for the next I-500 week-long series of events and the unselfish commitment from the many volunteers who are true race fans and community minded people. This isn’t limited to the individuals who volunteer. It also includes the volunteering of local businesses willing to help in any way possible. This true collaboration of year-round work pays tribute to the history of I-500 volunteerism at the SOO. It’s time for me to share some of the “OFF-SEASON” volunteer efforts most I-500 followers know nothing about. It starts with the Board of Directors. Each

of the nine I-500 Directors is assigned committee work. The committees developed are the life-line of the event. Every committee is equally important to the project. Each committee recruits volunteers to assist with its work and objectives. So we’ve established that the I-500 is a project where every committee is essential to each race and it’s not limited to volunteering for one week of racing. It’s a year-round plan that considers what projects can be accomplished in various weather conditions, how much time each project will take, volunteer scheduling, and so on. The planning is actually endless, starting from the end of the previous race in February until the “green flag” drops on the first Saturday in February each new year. Let’s look closer at some examples of the Standing committees mandated to ensure the event’s success. Let’s start with “Race Logistics.” One example of many is partnering with the I-500 Race committee to enhance various aspects of what works and what doesn’t from the drivers’ perspective. One thing the I-500 management does in this regard is The I-500 management team schedules a “Spring Drivers” meeting. During the off-season, race teams travel to the SOO to attend this meeting, which allows them and the drivers to share thoughts continued on page 26

on how the I-500 can improve the racing experience for everyone. In addition, if teams have information they want to share that wasn’t discussed at the “Spring Meeting,” they can contact our race liaison who represents I-500 management side of things. This committee also works hand-in-hand with the community during the off season regarding venue work, etc. Promotion, Media, Public Relations, Sponsorships, NonRace activities: Obviously, these areas of committee work are never-ending. An example is the I-500 “Summer Tour” project. Visiting auto race venues is part of a plan to bridge summer and winter racing thus giving race fans year-round race information and the opportunity to learn
more about Oval Ice Endurance Racing. This committee also includes the I-500 Social media production. Traveling to do interviews, meetings with potential sponsors, planning parade attendance, and other scheduled events around the state during the summer months. Building and Grounds: This committee gets little rest. You can imagine the time and effort required to maintain the venue grounds and buildings during the off-season. Mowing the whole venue is a major undertaking and takes a lot of man-hours. It also includes maintaining the equipment needed for the work, vehicle maintenance, shaping the track, ensuring each building is maintained and performing any necessary

repairs. Any additions and overall general maintentance of buildings, grounds and more. Again, keep in mind the element of “Mother Natureru” which means scheduling the work within a short window of a few months before the weather prevents certain tasks from being done. There is a time-line for everything the grounds and building crew must consider. Track and Pit Area: Volunteers spend hundreds of hours mowing the track and ensuring the pit area is well maintained. This committee and its volunteers work hard to maintain clear track boundaries. This includes maintaining the fencing around the track, mowing the track, and ensuring the entry chutes for sleds getting onto the continued on page 28

track and entering pit row are ready. This includes replacing any underground wiring that needs it and installing safety lighting. Basically, any aspect of maintaining the track area and pit row along with other track related work is done through this committee. Like other committees’ work, getting work done while weather conditions allow is critical. There’s no time to waste and it doesn’t stop when the leaves fall, it’s all done right UP to race day the first Saturday in February. Security, Medical, Emergency Facilities & Safety: During the off season, Security measures are reviewed. Meetings are scheduled with I-500 representation, law enforcement, medical teams, and emergency services. I-500 committee members meet to review safety standards. The committee volunteers are scheduled to help maintain the various security stations, scheduling times for any needed work to be done for improvements and betterments that enhance every aspect of safety, security, and medical needs throughout the year at the I-500 venue. Information and Technology: This committee hardly gets any sleep during the summer months. They are always working at the track making improvements or updating our many systems. Be it wiring changes at the track, P.A. system work, camera staging areas, internet services work, ensuring all communication equipment is up to par and this list goes on and on. Food Services: During the off-season, the volunteers working with this committee contact and visit the many local businesses who so kindly feed our volunteers year-round. Local food businesses donate food for volunteers working at the track. This committee will schedule food donations for the volunteers working at the track. Food scheduling covers both summer and winter volunteering efforts. During the off season, it’s important to ensure volunteers are fed. The same is done anytime people volunteer for the I-500. V.I.P. Committee: Meeting during the summer months and researching and planning to ensure our V.I.P. Sponsors and hot seat guests experience firstclass hospitality during their visit. Improvements and enhancements are made during the off-season so everything is in order when race week arrives. Race Committee: During the off-season, track officials travel to get trained and certified as I-500 track officials. Countless hours are put into making this event the safest race possible. Rule changes are made during off-season. Basically, volunteers put in incredible hours on this committee. They meet yearround, discussing and physically making changes at the track to ensure it is SAFE. W
hen my husband Chuck and I first looked out across the dense, snowheavy pines of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula decades ago, we didn’t just see just a beautiful landscape. We saw a playground, a sanctuary, and a way of life. Both of us were raised with the throttle in our hands, spending our childhoods chasing winters on vintage snowmobiles and summers and navigating the woods: hitting hill climbs, playing in the sand and mud. We knew early on that the U.P. wasn’t just a place to live; it was a region meant to be
actively explored, respected, and shared. That shared lifelong passion is exactly what drove us to establish Renze Power Sports. Today, our business has grown into a multi-location gateway for outdoor recreation, spanning across our headquarters in Munising, our gateway location in Newberry, and our lakeside hub in Manistique. But no matter how much our showrooms expand, or how advanced the machinery becomes, our core mission remains unchanged: to help both locals and visitors experience the absolute best

BORN FROM A LIFELONG PASSION To understand why we do what we do, you have to understand what riding means to us. Chuck and I have always believed that there is a distinct freedom found on a backcountry trail that you cannot replicate anywhere else. Whether it is the quiet hush of a fresh powder day in the Hiawatha National Forest or the thrill of kicking up dirt on an
ORV route in mid-July, powersports are the heartbeat of the Upper Peninsula. When we entered the dealership world, we didn’t want to build a sterile corporate showroom. We wanted to build a community hub—a true basecamp where riders could gather, share trail conditions, swap stories, and find the reliable equipment they need to get home safely. We intentionally chose our locations to align with the finest riding networks in the country. Our Newberry facility acts as what we proudly call the “southern gateway to the Tahquamenon Falls” area, while our Munising location places riders directly at the doorstep of hundreds of miles of designated public trails through the Hiawatha National Forest. We treat the U.P. as our backyard, and our customers as our neighbors. CURATING A FLEET WORTHY OF THE WILDERNESS We know that a trail ride is only as good as the machine underneath you. Because of our deep roots in the sport, Chuck and I have always been incredibly selective about the brands we bring into our dealerships.
