At Michigan Snowmobiler and ORV, we are at the beginning of our third year of ORV season! To start ORV season Scott and I went back to Silver Lake State Park with our son Nick and an evolving group of about thirty friends. This is our third annual dunes trip as close to opening weekend as possible. The weather was cold, but mostly sunny and awesome. We are again highly recommending to everyone to head on over to Mears, MI this summer for
at least one trip or two. The only thing that could have made the weekend better was if the Chicken Shack had been open. Because we visit so early in the season, the dunes are not quite so busy as during the middle of summer, but that is exactly what Scott and I prefer. The only downside is that some of the gift shops and a couple of the restaurants are not open for the season yet. Everything starts to be back in full swing by midMay. For us, just another reason to visit again.

While Gaylord, Michigan, is renowned for its exhilarating snowmobile trails during the winter, the fun doesn’t stop when the snow melts away. In fact, Gaylord transforms into a vibrant outdoor playground in summer, offering activities that cater to adventure seekers of all kinds. While snowmobilers may initially associate Gaylord with powdery trails and frosty landscapes, they’ll be pleasantly surprised to discover that the town’s natural beauty and recreational opportunities extend far beyond the winter season. From hiking and kayaking to fishing and hunting, Gaylord’s picturesque surroundings and pristine wilderness beckon snowmobilers to trade in their sleds for hiking boots, kayaks, fishing rods and hunting gear.
Gaylord is a wonderland for hikers and bikers alike, with endless miles of trails that wind through lush forests, meander along rivers, and lead to panoramic vistas.
Backpackers flock to the Jordan Valley Pathway and it’s breathtaking valley views during the warm season. This 18-mile loop offers shorter segments or can be tackled in a rigorous two-day stretch. The campground at the halfway point offers refuge, as dispersed camping is not allowed in the Jordan Valley. Shorter segments can be easily completed in one day and four separate trailheads allow easy access and varied opportunities for outdoor exploration.
You can also venture into the remote wilderness of the Pigeon River Country State Forest, just north of Gaylord, where over 114,000 acres of unspoiled state land beckons you to escape into the wilderness. Here, you’ll discover one of the largest free-roaming elk herds east of the Mississippi and endless opportunities for backcountry adventures. Home to the Shingle Mill Pathway and High Country Pathway, these rugged trails

offer river and forest views you won’t forget. Rustic campgrounds are available and dispersed camping is allowed, should you choose to challenge yourself for the ultimate off-the-grid adventure. Stretching over 80 miles, the looping High Country Pathway can be covered in 7-10 ambitious days on foot.

ANGLER’S
With over 90 inland lakes and the headwaters of five major rivers, Gaylord is a mecca for anglers
seeking to reel in their catch of the day. Otsego Lake, the county’s largest, is a favorite destination for serious anglers in search of trophysized fish. From pike, walleye, bass and robust panfish to the elusive lake sturgeon (which can grow over seven feet long), these waters teem with life.
Another enticing spot to cast a line is Heart Lake, known for producing perch and largemouth bass that will give you a fight. Small but mighty, Heart Lake is only 63 acres in size but reaches depths of 117 feet, making it the deepest in our county.
Along with our endless array
of lakes, the Gaylord area is home to the headwaters of several streams full of the north’s famous trout. Headwaters for the Manistee, Black, Sturgeon, Pigeon and AuSable Rivers all flow from Gaylord. Take a short drive in any direction and you’ll find rivers teeming with trout for eager anglers.
Whether you want to just dip your paddle to create a ripple or go high octane and make waves, Gaylord’s waterways welcome you to dive in! You’ll see the full summer

assortment of watersports on sprawling Otsego Lake, where jet skis and speedboats share the fun with pontoons, kayaks and paddleboards.
Public access sites with paved parking, restrooms and modern docks include Big Lake and Dixon Lake, two local favorites. Thumb Lake just north of Gaylord covers 484 acres and has plenty of room for boating enthusiasts to the west side and sunbathers to the east.
Find full descriptions for these lakes and more at www.gaylordmichigan.net.
Otsego County has earned a well-deserved reputation as a hunting hotspot, thanks to its central location, vast tracts of state land and variety of game.
Hunters will find an abundance of state land where they can set up camp and embark on rugged hunting expeditions reminiscent of days gone by. With acres upon acres of wilderness at your disposal, there’s plenty of room for everyone to enjoy the thrill of the hunt in Gaylord’s untamed wilderness. With its vast expanses and thick forest cover, the Pigeon River Country State Forest is a hotspot for hunting during every season.

As a reader, you must be a race fan. It seems the title of this article has captured your attention. And that’s exciting. So let’s carry on the article whereby you’re going to learn how an auto race venue sponsors the world’s most prestigious, exciting, toughest, most. grueling snowmobile race. How did that happen? How did it come about? And where are we going from here with this? It’s very unique that an auto race venue would sponsor a professional snowmobile race. But it’s not unique that race fans are race fans and in the racing community it doesn’t matter if it’s automobile, Snowmobile, motocross or any other type of racing. Racing is just racing. So step back, get comfortable. I’m about to tell you how this whole story came about.
This whole story started during the COVID period as COVID shut down the I-500 snowmobile race for a year due to the fact that the I-500 did not want to become a super spreader during Covid times. Having to take a year off and not host the race created a lot of frustration for us all. In an effort to recover the board Of directors for the I-500 decided to promote our professional snowmobile race by taking it on the road during the offseason and set up a vendor’s booth to promote the International 500 and the sport of oval ice endurance racing. A unique part about this Is the fact that the I-500 track announcer happens to be the track announcer for many auto race venues throughout Michigan as well as other states. So the phone call was made to our track announcer ( Matt Prieur)
continued from page 13
whereby we discussed the potential to visit race venues throughout Michigan where he is the track announcer and possibly set up a booth to promote the International 500 race and the sport of Oval ice racing. Matt agreed this would be a great idea and collectively we decided to title the summer tour “ The I-500 PURE-MICHIGAN SUMMER TOUR.”
So let the tour begin...... Collectively, we started scheduling auto venues throughout the whole state of Michigan covering the mitten from bottom to top each week from June through September. The Fall season is when auto racing closes its season and snowmobile racing begins. Race fans can go from one racing season right to the next and never miss a corner of racing excitement. What’s really cool about this is that many drivers who race autos at all the auto race venues we visited also race snowmobiles at the I-500.
Race fans who follow auto racing throughout the summer and into the fall can follow their favorite race drivers right into the racing season for snowmobile endurance racing.
As you can imagine the “I-500 Pure-Michigan Tour “ plan sounds pretty cool and a logical thing to do for promotion of the I-500, sport of oval ice racing, auto racing and it’s great for race fans as well. The tour proved to be a success and brought the overall racing community together. One of the many visits we made during the I-500 Pure-Michigan Summer Tour was to the Owosso Speedway which is located between Owosso, MI and Ovid, MI. on scenic M-21. The Owosso Speedway is owned and operated by Mr Rex Wheeler and his staff. While at the Owosso Speedway promoting the International 500 I was given the opportunity to meet Mr. Wheeler whereby I could thank him for allowing the I-500 to promote our event and the sport of
snowmobile endurance racing. Throughout our discussion, it was easy to see Mr. Wheeler’s passion for racing and how much he was deeply involved in reconstructing the Owosso Speedway to be one of the most prestigious short track venues in America. His demeanor and enthusiasm for racing in general was obvious and contagious. He’s a good listener and due to his overall love for racing he wanted to learn more about the sport of snowmobile endurance racing.
With Mr Wheeler’s interest to learn more about the I-500 we decided to meet a few more times whereby we discussed the I-500 and snowmobile endurance racing in detail. His infatuation Is to give race fans the ultimate experience of racing on a year round basis while
continued on page 16
promoting both venues, meaning the International 500 and Owosso Speedway. After many meetings a sponsorship ensued on behalf of the Owosso Speedway and Mr. Wheeler. Therefore In an attempt to bring race fans the ultimate year round racing experience through both racing seasons we want to promote both sports and both venues. Hence,” Owosso Speedway” has become the title
sponsor of the International 500 snowmobile race.
It’s a combined effort on our behalf to promote both styles of racing in hopes that fans will visit both race venues to enjoy racing at its finest. Racing doesn’t stop when the leaves fall. My recommendation is for you as a race fan, check out the summer schedule for the Owosso Speedway to enjoy the ultimate
experience in short track auto racing. Once the auto racing season comes to a close in the Fall, then it’s time to ramp up and make plans to attend the International 500 snowmobile race hosted at Sault Ste.Marie Michigan the first Saturday in February each year. •
he international snowmobile race is attempting to bring race fans from auto racing and snowmobile racing together to enjoy the ultimate experience in professional racing. In 2023 the International 500 decided to hit the road on a summer tour titled the, “ I-500 Pure Michigan summer tour”. This tour was designed to visit a number of race venues throughout Michigan during the offseason from snowmobile racing in an effort to promote the sport of snowmobile oval ice endurance racing and the I-500. It’s an attempt to bring race fans together so they can go from a summer fall racing season and move

right into winter racing with the International 500.
The success of the “ I-500 Pure Michigan Summer Tour” for 2023 was over the top. Visiting the summer auto racing venues gave the I-500 the opportunity to promote the I-500 race while bringing race fans together for year round racing enjoyment and to share information about the I-500; We advocate that racing doesn’t stop when the leaves fall and it’s our objective to have as many people as we can learn more about our event. It’s our intention to share information about the I-500 in hopes of getting more people interested in attending the race in person. Plus... it’s an initiative to share information about the sport of oval ice endurance racing.
All this being said, We’re now announcing the schedule for the. 2024 “ I-500 Pure Michigan Summer Tour” campaign.
We hope to see a lot of you race fans at one of the following venues on our summer tour schedule. Team drivers and snowmobile race sleds will be on hand to meet & greet race fans. Please stop by and say “ Hey.”

Nestled off of US 23 just north of the small town of Fenton, MI (pop. 11,700) you will find Unlimited Offroad Centers Inc, a well known aftermarket shop specializing primarily in Jeeps and other full size 4x4s. Unlimited’s niche lies in upgrading stock SUVs & truck’s offroad capability so that their owners may more fully enjoy a variety of ORV trails, not only here in Michigan, but nationwide!
Unlimited’s owner, Adam Shoemaker, started the business out of a single bay garage behind his mom’s in 2005. The business grew, and it wasn’t long until he had to move to a larger building, just down

the road from Unlimited’s current location. Demand for quality offroad work continued, the business continued to grow, and they had to move again to their current location on W. Thompson Rd about 10 years ago. And to accommodate growth in 2021 they added an additional shop and storage space when the building next door became available!
Unlimited’s main location is their 10,000 sq. ft. building which is home to their main offices, 1,300 sq. ft. sales floor, a 6-bay shop, as well as shipping, receiving, and marketing areas. Their newest building next door provides 5,000 sq. ft. of additional shop space with four more bays as well as much needed storage for inventory and work-in-process.
Staffing Unlimited Offroad is a group of folks committed to Unlimited Offroad’s mission. At any given time Unlimited has a
total staff of between 15 and 20 employees with an average tenure between ten and fifteen years! This includes the usual office, sales, marketing and other staff. Their shop is staffed by five certified techs all certified in at least three (or more) of the following disciplines: suspension, brakes, engine, and drivetrain. Unlimited employs only certified techs in the shop!
Unlimited’s forte & passion is clearly the full-size truck & SUV off road aftermarket, particularly Jeeps, and Ford/Chevy/Ram pickups. They offer a broad range of aftermarket work from simple cosmetics such as running boards and lighting, to ‘full blown’ dedicated trail vehicles. A good piece of their bread and butter though is the ‘middle of the road’ aftermarket of vehicle lifts, wheels and tires, with bumpers and winches common add-ons.
A solid sign of a successful enterprise is growth and repeat business, and Unlimited has great numbers on both. Approximately 60% of their business is repeat customers – a great indicator of the quality work that they do. In addition, through 2020 they were experiencing about a 10% annual growth rate. And then Covid hit! And business exploded! To quote Adam: “Everyone had two handfuls of money and they wanted to spend it!” Business shot up 40%! Since the covid bubble bump sales have ‘calmed down’, but sales are still growing consistently, and Adam is happy with where they’re going.
Fueling this market is a strong demand for outdoor motorized recreation. This is evidenced by soaring ORV license sales, the emergence of new venues such as the Holly Oaks ORV Park, and continued on page 26

increased ORV traffic at other public venues like Drummond Island and Silver Lake. In addition, it has been estimated that 70% of all new Jeep owners are spending money on upgrades to their new Jeep within the first 90 days of purchase.
Although Unlimited has a wide variety of clients with rigs ranging from 4x4 SUVs to 4x4 pickups, and from Jeep brand to Toyota, about 85% of their business is Jeep related. Big Jeeps, little Jeeps, new Jeeps, old Jeeps! Adam estimated that Unlimited turns out about 200 vehicle builds per year. Unlimited’s most common modifications are suspension lifts combined with a wheel and tire upgrades. And
as noted, these are accompanied many times with bumpers, lights and winch upgrades.
In order to accommodate their clientele, Unlimited keeps a large inventory of Jeep parts, tires, wheels, and other popular aftermarket parts in stock so that when Mr. Client shows up Unlimited can deliver. Pre-Covid it was not uncommon for shops to carry minimal inventory and order up parts and material as needed. It’s not a secret that supply chain issues have been rampant since the Covid bump, and what used to take a couple days to get delivered to your shop now takes a couple weeks – if you’re lucky! Adam admitted that keeping a
large inventory flies in the face of “lean business” models (he shared that his accountant went through the roof!!), but for Unlimited it pays off because he doesn’t have to delay – or even turn away – business.
We also asked Adam if Unlimited does anything in the side-by-side market (also known as a “UTV” or “Utility Terrain Vehicle”). Adam responded that when side-by-sides first started becoming popular Unlimited ‘tested the waters’, but soon learned that Unlimited’s niche is really in the full-size market. That, combined with the fact that the side-by-side market was already being well served by the existing dirt bike/ ATV/UTV ‘power sports’ shops, made it an easy
call to pass on that segment.
Unlimited also has a pretty elaborate ‘road show’! As a part of their marketing program, Unlimited brings their merchandising trailer to about a dozen different events every year, and usually with some of their recent builds. You can purchase a wide variety of parts and accessories, as well as sportswear and other branded merchandise. You can pick their expert’s brains, and even book shop time. If you enjoy trail riding in Jeeps or other full sized 4x4s and SUVs, and you want to squeeze a little more or a lot more out of your vehicle, Unlimited is the place to go! Check them out at www.unlimitedoffroad.com •
In the world of off-road racing, adrenaline-fueled adventures often come with an element of risk. For one resilient individual, Joseph Plowman, a passion for ATV racing turned into a life-altering experience after a devastating accident left him paralyzed. However, this is not a tale of defeat; rather, it’s a story of triumph and the indomitable spirit that defies physical limitations.
Joseph, was an avid ATV

Instead of succumbing to despair, Joseph chose a different path. Determined to defy the odds, he embarked on a journey of physical rehabilitation and mental resilience. Though the road to recovery was challenging, his unwavering spirit shone through. “It took quite a while but I got over my fears because of my love for racing.” He wasn’t ready to let go of his love for the sport. With a newfound perspective, he discovered adaptive offroad vehicle that could accommodate his needs. “I bought a 2013 RZR 900xp to see if I would like driving one, I fell in love with it. “

Enter the Polaris RZR 900, a high-performance off-road vehicle that became his ticket to freedom. Customized to meet his specific requirements, that RZR 900 provided him with the means & confidence to get back on the track and pursue his passion for off-road racing. “I drive with two driving sticks, one for gas and one for brake, [that are] made for cars and trucks. Super easy to install

and much lower cost than a custom set up and available on Amazon. They are called QuicSticks®. “
Being behind the wheel of that SXS, he not only regained a sense of freedom but also returned to the racing scene with newfound determination. “I was itching to get back into racing when I had stumbled upon The Trail Master Challenge at Twisted Trails. So I grabbed my friend Kendall Van Putten as a co-pilot and dad Joe Plowman was the pit crew/ mechanic(the man who made it all possible) and we headed to Copemish Michigan.”
The Trail Master Challenge is where I had the pleasure to not only meet Joseph, but race with him. We were about to head out on a 7mile track through the woods with varying terrain. I was quite nervous myself and I’ll never forget the moment I realized his situation.
I was in complete awe of the ability for someone with such a “disadvantage” to try something so challenging. I had to meet him and after talking to him, I was completely inspired! He was nervous just like me but his excitement and spirit were unlike anyones I had ever met. Here I was thinking driving a NA 1000 YXZ on 27” tires against turbo RZRS was going to be a challenge… How about doing it in an even more underpowered, smaller SXS, driving with sticks?!
“I was very nervous but after the first challenge started, I fell in love with side-by-side racing. It felt natural to be back on the tracks since I started racing at 10 years old. Fast forward to today, I’m still
racing, hitting the dunes, trails, and thankful that I still have my arms to participate in this awesome sport that gives me my freedom back.” . We have raced SXS together several times since that first race and he always can be found in the pits smiling and positive, regardless how the race goes.
“My most memorable moment would be my first Red Bull Snow Scramble. It was a bone chilling day in February with huge snow drifts and a slick icy course. My dad rented a U-haul box truck for the three of us to make breakfast and stay warm. We had no studs in the tires (everyone found out we could use them about an hour or so before the lineup). We almost finished that race but lap 4/5 broke an OEM ball joint and we had to be towed back.”
In the face of life-altering adversity, his story is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit. His journey from tragedy to triumph, powered by a love for off-road racing stands as an inspiration to us all. As he continues to tear up the tracks in his Polaris RZR 900, he not only races for victory but also for the countless others who find strength in his story. Every lap is an inspiration to others facing similar challenges (or any challenge), proving that resilience and passion can triumph over adversity.
“No matter what happens in life, it still goes on. You just gotta keep looking forward towards those checkered flags.” •
