an you believe that Memorial Day has already been celebrated? Every year goes by faster. This last month Scott and I were enjoying breakfast at one of our favorite local restaurants. We eat there so often, we have gotten to know not only the staff, but many of the customers as well. Anyway, as we were leaving, I happen to notice a fellow patron about to get into a well loved, older, lifted, Chevy 4x4 Square body. On the windows were several stickers including a Vietnam Veteran, Harley Davidson and one referring to snowmobiles. Couldn’t help but wonder what stories that truck and the driver could tell…next time I see him, I’m going to make sure he gets a copy of this issue. Hope you spent Memorial weekend out on the road enjoying our awesome state of Michigan, saying hello to a veteran, eating at a local restaurant, finding a new trail and dreaming of what great adventures this summer will bring.
HERE’S A FEW HIGHLIGHTS FROM THIS ISSUE: 1. Our cover shot was taken at “Twisted Trails” in Copemish. Scott and I met three new friends from Dirt Dudes UTV (check them out on You Tube) willing to share a photo op and conversation with us. Dom Santino describes this 400 acre park and the incredible variety of events planned at Twisted Trails in his article on page 25. This is a great place to visit and have a ton a fun at. 2. On page 2, Melissa Sullivan reminds all of us some simple, easy to imple-
ment safety tips to make sure the fun continues for all BRAAAPers on the trails. Hand signals, fire extinguishers and knowing local ordinances can make a weekend trip not only fun, but safe. 3. On page 3, Drummond Island, Gem of the Huron and Jeeps, do we need to say more? 4. Make sure to read Backroads and Waterfalls page 6. Jim Duke will have you warming up the SXS and gearing up the family for a ride any number of waterfall sightseeing trips. For Scott and I, a trip to Tahquamenon Falls is always a family favorite. 5. Check out Coyote Crossing on Page 10. Scott and I are looking forward to visiting owner Julie Finch, hopefully within the next 10 days. As I read this article, I could picture our family enjoying the bands, food and lodging Coyote Crossing has to offer. 6. As always, we try to bring articles from East Jordont to Copper Harbor to the Mounds and everywhere in between! If you have a favorite spot you would like us to feature, please let us know. We are always looking for great ideas and love to hear from our readers. Backroads and Waterfalls BY JIM DUKE CONTRIBUTING WRITER
A
s the seasons change and the weather warms, as the snow melts and gives way to soft ground and mud puddles, and as the snowmobile enthusiasts put away their sleds and get out their summertime toys, all thoughts turn to new and exciting adventures. Reaching out to my many snowmobiling acquaintances that also enjoy the great outdoors when the snows have melted away, I asked what other forms of recreation are of interest, taking into consideration which state they are from and what recreational opportunities exist. Beginning with the question of what the most popular and up-coming recreational pursuits is, the answers were quite varied, primarily due to the type of outdoor activity and whether motorized or self-powered. Topping out as the most popular in the non-motorized was mountain biking and hiking while the most popular by far in the motorized category was side-by-side ORV touring with riding quad-runners coming in a close second. I was amazed that in almost every state the trail touring to seek out waterfalls was a high priority. While there are plenty of options for a good story in any one of the categories mentioned, my preference has been touring via side-byside and have decided to do both research on the topic and some extensive field work as well.

There are literally hundreds of thousands of waterfalls Munising Falls, across this great land, divided and spread among every an interesting attraction at the NPS one of the 50 states. Not too surprising, research reveals Interpretative Center the three states with the most waterfalls is situated along on Sand Point Road, the west coast, with Washington state being blessed Munising, MI with the most waterfalls, numbering more than three thousand while Oregon is second with fifteen hundred and California coming in third with just over a thousand. Getting a bit closer to home, I checked out the Midwestern states and found an abundance of waterfalls as well, but to list them all would be much too time consuming, however, my bucket list holds hopes of putting together a road trip to visit at least one in each state, listed in alphabetical order rather than by sequence. Since it will be much easier to do a short road trip within Michigan, that will not be included here but as a separate entity. In Illinois, one of the most popular waterfalls is Lake Falls in LaSalle County some 95 miles west of Chicago. In Indiana, it’s the upper & lower Cataract Falls, found in Jennings County in the southern part of the state. But with all the interest generated in these other states, I must confess that our own great state of Michigan holds the record (just my opinion) for the most beautiful and impressive waterfalls to be found anywhere. In doing some research on the subject, primarily for this story but partly also for a planned waterfall tour via SXS with a group of like-minded folks from the local club, I found more than 200 named waterfalls with all but one located across the wide expanse of the Upper Peninsula. There are, however, many unnamed attractions in both the lower and the upper peninsulas, some that fit the description of a waterfall and some that barely deserve to be considered a series of ripples. is the Ocqueoc Falls near Onaway and is the largest to be found in the lower. It is unfortunate that in order to visit and view this impressive one must possess a recreation passport or purchase a day pass. That is because it has been designated as a state scenic site. There are at least nine other locations ranging from the north to the south, most of which are manmade and created by a dam or other obstructions and won’t be considered as part of this story. Instead, I’ll concentrate on a few of the most popular ones located in the Upper Peninsula, beginning in the far western part of the U.P. and look at Bond Falls, one of the most picturesque waterfalls located near Paulding just east of US Hwy-45. It‘s assessable by regular vehicular travel as well as via snowmobile and/or ORV. A little further east and a bit north, we can find a series of five scenic and very impressive waterfalls and a few others that won’t receive recognition at this time. Usually known as the Waterfalls of the Black River, but actually each of the five has a name of it’s own. Beginning just north of Bessemer, the main five falls are all

within the last three miles as the river makes its way toward Lake Superior, the first on the list is the Great Conglomerate Falls, followed by the Gorge Falls and then the Potawatomi Falls. It should be noted that there is a parking area for each of the falls although the second & third do share one. The final two Falls are the Sandstone Falls, located about a half-mile from the Gorge Falls and the Rainbow Falls about another half-mile further. To see these two falls will require a bit of a walk, so plan accordingly. In the eastern-central region of the Upper Peninsula, Alger County alone has dozens of known waterfalls and the majority of them are truly impressive but listed here are just a few that can be reached fairly easy without too much travel along backroads. In fact, the first three mentioned can be viewed quite well without leaving your vehicle. Probably the most visited annually is Alger Falls, located just outside of Munising on the east side of state highway M-28. Scott Falls can also be seen from M-28 and is located between Christmas and Au Train. Wagner Falls is found on state highway M-94 slightly south of Munising, and although it can be seen from the parking area near the roadway, it can best be viewed by a short and easy walk inward toward the falls. Of the many waterfalls in the Upper Peninsula, both those named and the several without an official name, the most popular, I believe, is the

Tahquamenon Falls is probably one of the most popular waterfalls in the state, is actually within the state park of the same name, located in the eastern Upper Peninsula in Chippewa County.
Tahquamenon Falls, located just west of Paradise, Michigan on state highway M-123, sometimes referred to as little Niagara Falls. To view this attraction, however, since it is within a state park, visitors must have a recreation passport for their vehicle or pay an entry fee. This facility has several other amenities available such as a restaurant & micro-brewery, and gift shops. As much as most of the waterfalls listed can be visited by conventional vehicle and /or a short hike, many are also along backroads or on the state designated trails system and are popular stops for ATV riders and Off-road touring groups. In some cases, they are more assessable and easier to get to using the OHV option. Regardless of how we choose to visit these beautiful waterfalls and other attractions in our state and federal forests, the trip will be well worth the effort and highly recommended. Whether it’s via snow machine in the winter months or by ATV in the warmer ones, running the backroads and searching out waterfalls is a wonderful pastime. •

he Huron Manistee Natl. Forest Service has recently legalized OHV (off-highway vehicles) usage on forest roads which have 4-digit markers. With Coyote Crossing Resort (CCR) being located in the heart of the Huron Manistee National Forest, they’re excited for the opportunity to offer food and lodging to people wanting to ride these trails. y husband Chris and I have spent a lot of miles on the trails and experienced many different types of situations you can end up in. We also see how quickly the sport is gaining popularity meaning a huge increase of trail traffic over the last two years. Having fun BRAAAAPing is always a high priority, but safety should always be the highest priority. It does not matter if you enjoy the trails on two wheels or four, by

ATV or SXS, the potential dangers of riding can be reduced with proper maintenance, using trail etiquette, and taking appropriate safety precautions. Lately we have noticed that we feel safer on the racetracks than we do in the trails simply for the lack of oncoming traffic. If everyone does their part to be safe, responsible, and respectful when trail riding it is sure to be an exciting time for everyone. That is why we thought it would be import-

ant to review some tips on being safe and responsible when you BRAAAAP. KNOW THE LAWS & REGULATIONS The most important thing for any trail rider to do is look up the ORV rules and regulations for the area that they will be riding. These laws help protect you, the trails, and others using the trails. They also protect the ability to off-roading to continue in a certain area. Ignoring or-
dinances and rules can lead to injuring someone, a ticket, and potentially jeopardizes riding opportunities for all in that area. Where we BRAAAAP, in Roscommon County’s St Helen & Houghton Lake Trail Systems, we have a local ordinance allowing ORV traffic on county roads. This allows riders easy access to food & gas. It is also beneficial for the local economy that visitors can ride into town to eat, shop & play. The follow-

It is also important to verify that you have accurate information on legal trail systems for the ORV that you will be driving. PROTECT YOURSELF WITH PROPER SAFETY EQUIPMENT I remember the days that Chris and I used to BRAAAAP without our helmets. We always wore them at the racetrack but in the trails, we did not think we needed them, after all we had goggles and cage. We were safe right? Wrong, even strapped in the cab of an SXS, a collision, or rollover can still result in a head injury—especially if you are not wearing helmets. We proved this when we tipped over our SXS at the top of the St. Helen Free Area. I hit my head on the roll cage and got knocked out cold. That and the fact that we have been
in two head on accidents, is why we put them on every ride now. Depending on the ORV that you drive, wearing a helmet may be required by law. We have prepared a guide specifically on safety equipment that we use when we BRAAAAP in the trails or on the track: GEAR FOR YOU • Full-face helmets, such as Motocross style, are recommended for off-roaders. • Goggles provide required eye protection. Your vision can be impaired if dust or sand gets in your eyes. If your ORV does not have a windshield, they provide protection from rocks flung from tires. • Riding gloves improve your grip and protect your hands against chafing and debris. • Long pants, longsleeves, and closed toe shoes are also recommended when off-roading in a SXS. Riding pants, boots, and further protection may be required depending on the type of ORV you are riding.
• Prepare for the weather, it’s Michigan. Rain suits or heavier-duty shells may be advisable to pack depending on the weather conditions and the season you’re riding in. SAFETY EQUIPMENT FOR YOUR ORV: • Mirrors will help improve your visibility navigating terrain. They are also helpful to keep an eye on other riders behind you in your group. • A fire extinguisher mounted with a quick release mount. Having one handy can allow you to get a person out of an ORV that is on fire. You can also use it to help control the spread of fire, preventing a wildfire. Consider mounting it inside the cab should you find yourself in a situation you need it and are on your own. • Upgrade from stock seat belts harnesses. A four-point harness has one strap over each shoulder and two more across your lap. In a five-point harness, an additional strap runs between your legs. Make sure you are comfortable continued on page 14

operating the harnesses and belt locks with gloves and helmet that limits your vision. • Window Nets are required at most racetracks and offer a bit of added safety on the trail. They prevent branches and debris from entering the cab. In the event of a rollover, they also help keep arms inside the vehicle. • A First aid Kit is always great to keep on hand for yourself or another injured BRAAAAPer. CHECK YOUR ORV EVERY RIDE Whether it’s your first or your 100th ride on your ORV, I always recommend you thoroughly look over your vehicle before a trail ride. A good once-over can reveal issues that would get in the way of your day on the trails. This is one of those simple steps that can pay off big time in terms of preventing breakdowns and injuries. • Check fluid levels and look for any signs of leakage. • Check your tire pressure and inspect tires for wear, or punctures. • Ensure wheel and axle nuts are tight. Rock tires to

pinpoint loose fasteners or worn bearings. • Make sure all lights, switches, and gauges are operating correctly. • Check fuel levels. It is always better to head out with a full tank of gas. Avoid carrying fuel if you can get fuel along your route. • Check that all leaked fluids, sticks & packed debris are cleaned from skid plates and around the engine and exhaust. Certain areas of your ORV get hot enough to catch dry grasses and debris on fire. USE YOUR HEAD USE YOUR HANDS Oncoming traffic is a reality on many popular trails systems, so we encourage all riders to learn and use the special hand signals used for oncoming traffic. When two groups of riders approach each other on the trail, the leader of each group should use their left hand to signal how many riders are coming after them, and each following rider does the same. Five fingers mean five or more riders, four fingers mean four and so on. A fist
held in the air is the signal for last rider. If there are more than 5 in your group, say 8, the leader of a group will hold up five fingers, and the 2 riders behind them will also hold up five. The fourth rider will hold up four, the fifth rider will hold up three and the sequence will continue until the last rider holds up a fist. So if you ever wondered why everyone was waving on the trails, now you know they weren’t just saying “hey”, they were looking out for your safety. These aren’t the only hand signals you need to know. Signals like “slow down,” “oncoming riders,” “stop” and “obstacle.” Are important for leaders to share with riders behind them. It is also important when traveling on roads with your ORV that you are safely letting traffic know when you are turning. Traveling in a group requires communication. RESPECT WHERE YOU BRAAAAP Enjoying the great outdoors is one of the main reasons that people enjoy off-road riding. It is every rider’s
responsibility to respect that environment and trails in every way you can: • Don’t damage plants and landscaping by riding off the trail or in non-designated areas. • Watch for wildlife animals that you encounter, as the sound of engines can spook them into the trails make them unpredictable. • Use 4WD to go up a hill rather than two-wheel. Excessive tire spin, damaging the trail’s condition. • Take any food wrappers, trash and/or broken gear back with you. Littering damages the environment and other people’s enjoyment of the trail. Pack It In Pack It Out! BE A RESPONSIBLE LEADER If you are leading a group of friends for a trail ride, take it seriously. The leader of a group of riders takes responsibility for the rest of the group’s safety. The leader should watch the trail for obstacles and oncoming traffic and alert riders behind them. They should also make sure that they are keeping continued on page 16

My friend George and I checking on the drivers and calling 911 just moments after we drove up on the accident. It was important we got the trail cleared right away this was the crest of a hill right after a blind 90 degree corner. Luckily we were on a mail trail just off of M-55 and Richfield Department of Public Safety was on the scene quickly to assist and shut down the trail.

track of all riders, choosing when to stop for breaks, and choosing a route appropriate for all rider’s skill levels. It is also important to educate new riders on trail etiquette and safety by sharing tips and setting a good example to follow. Step up where you can and do your part to protect our sport. My husband and I work with businesses in the St. Helen and Houghton Lake areas to display banners reminding trail riders to “Take every corner like someone is coming!” and showing them important hand signals. A lot of people come to these areas to ride so we have the opportunity to get the safety information to a lot of riders this way! We also got permission from DNR to introduce trash barrels at the St. Helen Free Area to encourage people to clean up the trails. They are not trash cans, we encourage people to pick up trash they see laying around and get it to the barrels. Weekly one of us or another volunteer empties the barrels. No matter where you are riding or who you’re riding with, following ORV rules and trail etiquette, and respecting the trails will help make everyone’s ride better.
I love living where everyone comes to play but sometimes it scares me. We have been in two head on accidents ourselves riding and I’ll never forget the day that I rode up on this accident and had to call 911. It was very scary to come up on one this in the trail. I was afraid of what I was going to see... The Gator driver was pinned and the X3 driver was at first too. the Gator driver saw the x3 coming and was almost at a stop when he was hit. No major injuries but 911 had to be called to clear the trail and separate the machines to even get the one driver out. I personally knew of two other head on collisions that happened on the same day. The ORVs keep getting bigger and the trails are not. I LOVE meeting new people in the trails but NOT like that! I think the chance of accidents being so high riding is what led us to racing. Speed, experience, dust & so many other things affect your safety when you are on the trails. I don’t want to scare everyone, but I want everyone to be aware of the dangers and take off roading seriously as you would driving a car! •

rummond Island is known as the Gem of the Huron and it doesn’t take a visitor long to realize how it got its nickname. Your journey begins when you cross the Mighty Mac, as you drive the 5 mile suspension bridge across the Mackinaw Straits, you can breathe a little easier. I don’t know if it’s the clearer air of the UP, the beautiful views from high above the straits, or the fact that Drummond Island isn’t much further. Nestled at the eastern tip of the upper peninsula, in the north end of Lake Huron lays an ORV enthusiast’s paradise. Excitement builds as you follow M-134 east along Lake Huron through the Les Cheneaux Islands region, trying to catch the boat to Drummond! But have no fear, the car ferry operates year round, hourly from 5:40 am to 12:40 am! The ferry ride is an adventure itself! Drive right on, and enjoy the short one mile ride to paradise. When you arrive you will be treated to picturesque forests, and plenty of room to roam. Drummond Island is the second largest freshwater island in the United States, consisting of 87,000 acres. With a yearround population of a little over a thousand people, Drummond is the perfect place to get away from it all. Although a world away, the Island offers plenty to make you feel right at home. From gas, to groceries, auto repair, to a variety of lodging, we have you covered. But you came to the largest closed loop ORV/ATV system in the state to RIDE! With over 100 miles of trails there is a lot to explore! There are trials for experienced off roaders, and those just starting out alike. The Drummond Island Tourism Association (located at four corners), Drummond Island Resort and Conference Center, and several other local businesses offer free ORV/ATV trail maps, which show

the relative difficulty of the various trails. For those just starting out I highly recommend taking a ride out to the famous Fossil Ledges. Located on the north shore of the Island the off road trail opens up to a breath taking rocky ledge beach, a remnant of eons past. Take a bit of time to stretch your legs and look closely at the fossilized remains of a salt water coral bed; if the weather is right this is also a great place to take a dip! Just be careful as the ledges create some deep drop offs. Remember to tread lightly, the journey to the ledges is a fun ride, but foot traffic only on the beach, and be sure to take only pictures, and leave only footprints. If the trail to Fossil Ledges wasn’t challenging enough, check out the rocky road to one of Drummond’s signature landmarks, Marblehead. The largest challenge of the ride to the dry non-acid cliff is the final obstacle, the steps! Traversing these makes the view even more spectacular. Overlooking the North Channel, 100 feet above Lake Huron, you will be on the eastern most part of the island, on a clear day you will even see Cockburn Island, Ontario! The plant life found on this rare limestone cliff is unique! Take a moment to enjoy one of Drummond’s thirteen plus ecosystems. With Fossil Ledges being one of the least challenging rides, and Marblehead one of the most difficult, don’t forget there are lots more trails to explore, with some great destinations like Glen Cove Beach, and Shale beach. But as a true off road enthusiast will know, the journey IS the destination! With the off road trails darting in and out of the boreal forest landscapes, flirting with the rocky shoreline of Lake Huron, here are some of the most scenic trails in Michigan. It seems that one could ride for days and not explore it all. To challenge yourself and your ride even further, check out the off road park, Turtle Ridge. Within Drummond Island Resort and Conference Center’s large property lies a challenging off road experience. With an upper and lower section for varying skill level and vehicle modification, you can try out the carved limestone trails that are sure to put your vehicle to the test, and provide memories that last a lifetime. When its time to take a break from the trails don’t fear Drummond hasn’t much to offer aside from its rugged terrain and off road challenges. Make sure to pack your paddling gear, and enjoy kayaking part (or continued on page 22

all!) of the Heritage Water Trail around the island. There are even some shipwrecks that are visible on a calm day. With many peaceful coves off of ORV trails, paddling becomes riding’s perfect mate! Don’t be afraid to stretch your legs either, all of the ORV trails on the island are hikable as well! This can provide the perfect opportunity to take in some of the Island’s many bird species and prevalent wildlife. If you aren’t sure how to get the ball rolling and meet other ORV enthusiasts here on Drummond Island, look into joining one of the many off road events hosted annually on the Island. The official kick off to the season is brought to us by the annual Jeep the Mac event, held this year May 6-8. With nearly 700 jeeps crossing the Mighty Mac and making their way to the Island, this is the perfect event for beginners and seasoned jeepers alike. This year we had a great time welcoming in Summer with the poker
run, Jeeps and Java at Drummond Island Resort, and, of course, an all day party with vendors, music, and thrills at the mud bog! We are looking forward to hosting the 29th Jeep Jamboree on the Island over Father’s Day weekend. With an expected 300 participants looking to enjoy a weekend of riding and friendship, this year is sure to be a wild ride! Many participants will look to earn their Jeep Badge of Honor on the Marble Head Trail. If you don’t have a Jeep, no problem! Stock ORVs and 4x4s can handle most everything the Island throws at them, however, it is recommended that you equip your vehicle with skid plates. There’s a reason one of Drummond’s nicknames is ‘The Rock’. Though utility style quads and 4x4s tend to be the vehicles seen most often on the rugged Drummond Trails, side by sides and all varieties of off road vehicles have ample trails to explore.

Today – 43 years later and after shifting to ORV and equipment sales in 2014 - that business ranks #1 in Yamaha Snowmobile sales in their District and #2 nationwide. It is Pat’s Motorsports, located in Greenland, MI, now owned and managed by the original owner Pat McIntyre’s son, Kip McIntyre. Pat’s is a full service dealer offering new and used snowmobiles, ATV’s, side by sides, snow bikes,
lawn mowers, trailers and power equipment. They also run a robust rental business. Says Kip, “Growing up, my mother was an LPN and my dad worked in the Copper Mine for 16 years. After being laid off twice due to the unstableness of the mine, my parents started dabbling in the car sales business, got their dealer license and the rest is history.” In 1985 the business moved into the building they are still in today. Kip took over the business in 2014, shifting from car sales to ORV and equipment sales. His wife, Trisha plays an integral
role, running the day to day operations. About their success, Kip points to their committed and skilled employees, saying “our techs are well trained and highly experienced – they are the backbone of the business. And, being a family business, our staff is truly
an extension of and part of the family. They tend to stay with us so we have great longevity among our whole team.” He also sees their way of business as an ‘old school approach’ of putting service in front of sales. “For us sales is the continued on page 24

Another thing unique to Pat’s is that they take walk ins, and turn them around quick. Situated in the heart of the Ontonagen Trail, and not far from Bruce Crossing, the Bill Nichols trail and many others, Pat’s is surrounded by some of the best off road riding in Michigan and, arguably, the world. They are also heavily involved in the community, the area and everything it represents. “In a town of 100 people, it’s just really important to look out for each other and for the area,” he says. To that end, the business has donated funds to reopen both the Copper Peak Snowmobile Hill after 13 years, a treasured Ski Hill. They support Nick Keller and the Keller Family Community Foundation by offering parts and service pro bono. They also donate 1/22/3 - WI equipment to the Superior Snowmobile Club to help maintain the trails and are heavily involved with the Michigan Snowmobile and ORV Association (MISORVA,) offering ATV safety training classes, discounts on equipment and more. So, what’s in store for Pat’s in the future? Kip says the focus is to keep doing what they are doing and to continue striving to get better. “I have no plans on going anywhere,” he says. •

Twisted Trails Off Road Park Get Down...Get Dirty...Get Twisted W

hether you are looking for a place to take your ORV, an outdoor adventure or a good time with some music, Twisted Trails ORV park has it. The park is located in Copemish just off Cadillac Highway. Copemish is located northwest of Mesick and southwest of Buckley. The park is the largest privately-owned ORV park in the state of Michigan, covering a total of 400 acres. The park is owned and operated by siblings Dale and Donna Humphrey. Dale and Donna are very committed to making sure you get the best experience out of your time at their park. They offer options that appeal to everyone, from slow trail riders to the fun and adventurous mud boggers. The property includes items such as sand drags, numerous trail rides, mud bogs and three different rock formations. The rock formations are affectionately referred to as Holy Moley, Picker Valley and Twisted. The park also features the Twisted Trails Off-Road Park Campground. The campground offers rustic
camping for RVs, trailers and tents. The sites are spacious and set in a nicely wooded area with easy access. Running water is available on the property, while only a few sites offer electric hookup. The campground is generator friendly and open from May to October. Several upgrades are planned for the campground in 2022 including an expansion of the number of campsites and a bathhouse. The park is also going to start an off-road tours program, allowing people to rent side by sides or quads. Providing another great option for people who would like to visit the park but do not have their own vehicles to do so. While there are plenty of things to do at the park to enjoy your time. The biggest draw and staple of the Twisted Trails ORV Park is the 20 or more events that they offer throughout the season. they are grouped by either Off Road or Race Events: OFF ROAD EVENTS Mudathon - The park has had quite a few events already this year. Next on the schedule is the Mudathon. The event will kick off with some mudding on Friday night. On Saturday, there will be a 4 wheel beater race. As described, you can basically bring any 4 wheel drive vehicle to compete. On Saturday evening the fun continues with a freestyle mud pit challenge. The festivities conclude with some action on stage as Peacemaker performs some rock and roll favorites. WTCM Country Campout - A brand new event in 2022, the Country Campout is piggybacking off another very popular campout event later in the year. In partnership with Midwestern Broadcasting Company, Twisted Trails will host a charity event, while giving an option

for up-and-coming country artists to perform. The event will run from June 24 – 26. The concert stage will open at 5:30 on Friday evening through 10:00 pm. The park on Saturday will host a cornhole tournament, a freestyle mud pit, concert performances and an after-hours bonfire. The weekend will conclude on Sunday with a Country Gold breakfast from 8 am though 1 pm. The park will host the Summer Dog Party on August 5-7, which features mud and trail riding. Along with camping, music and fun. The big draw for the Summer Dog Party is the poker run which starts at 9 am in the morning and includes a trip through the Copemish Heritage Days Parade. On August 13, the park will be changing out motor vehicles for running shoes. As they will host the DK5K. Which is a tough run obstacle course. The goal of the 5k is to raise awareness for vet-

erans that go through challenges every day. If you are interested, you can visit DK5K.info. The park has many other events, including Kamp Omelet also in partnership with Midwestern Broadcasting Company and which has enjoyed massive success in previous years. The camp will run from September 9-11. The park is still working on details for the Pumpkin Run which is from October 14-16. The park will feature a customer appreciation day on November 5, where the park will be open from 9 o’clock in the morning until 9 o’clock at night. The park also has a few events through the winter months as well. Spring events to watch for in 2023 include the Spring Fling and Keep Jeepin. Be aware of the challenges of not knowing what to expect with Northern Michigan weather changes. The Spring Fling

Copper Harbor Incredibly beautiful no matter what time of year, Copper Harbor is an amazing playground for the outdoor enthusiast. BY DOM SANTINA CONTRIBUTING WRITER
I
f you want to go to the farthest north place you can go to the state of Michigan. Then you will find yourself in the city of Copper Harbor, Michigan. The town is located on the tip of the Keweenaw Peninsula. The city has about 100 current yearly residents, while it moves close to 300 residents when there is no snow. The Copper Harbor is the furthest city away from an United States Interstate, at approximately 5 hours. Which makes it the perfect place to find room on the asphalt and take your ORV on to some trails. The downtown area

is 10 blocks long by 3 blocks wide, which makes it walkable from about any location. The main downtown area of Copper Harbor features shops, restaurants, a microbrewery and a grocery store. Since the city only has roughly 100 year-round residents, all of the restaurants and shops are locally owned. This allows the retailers to embrace the genuine Upper Peninsula hospitality that they are known for. Copper Harbor is anchored by Fort Wilkins State Park to the east and Hunter’s Point Township Park to the west of town.

The city also features quite a few different lodging options which range from renting a cabin to motels and resorts. The Mariner North Resort and the Lake Fanny Hooe Resort are open as year-round resorts. There are other options available and can be found at copperharbor.com/placesto-stay. ORV RIDING When you are five hours from the nearest Interstate, it makes it possible to have a lot of room to break out your ORV and have some fun. The Keweenaw Peninsula has ORV trails that run throughout the Peninsula. The trails come out to a total of 160 miles. Many of the trails offer a variety of different sights along your ride, that can be from the shore of Lake Superior to driving

through ghost towns. Most of the trails have taken over railroad grades that were once made for transporting wood or iron ore. One of the most picture perfect places, comes when you take the trail to High Rock Bay from Copper Harbor. This trail will take you to some amazing views of Lake Superior. The trail is very rarely used by tourists and takes you through old logging trails for that perfect photo op location. Copper Harbor also has multiple locations for fueling up your ORV, which will conviently get you on your way to explore and enjoy this pristine area. peninsula.These lonely outposts once thrived during the mining era but have since almost disappeared back into the their primative surroundings. While exploring old mining towns and gorgeous scenery make sure to include the many waterfalls throughout the area. WATERFALLS Manganese Falls - A waterfall that is not far from downtown, Manganese Falls allows for some easy sight-seeing. The waterfall is located on Second Street, just a half mile south of Gratiot. There are other trails that parallel the falls, which allows for some awesome spectating. While the falls are smaller, they can still provide a beautiful view. Silver River Falls - is located 9.5 miles away from Copper Harbor on the Silver River. An easy trail and a few walking steps lead you to a nice cross bridge as well. The upper falls offers a pretty impressive display with over a thirty foot drop. Jacob’s Falls - At almost double the length of Silver River Falls, the 18 mile hike west of Copper Harbor can make for a longer day. The waterfall is located just beyond Great Sand Bay. The falls can be seen from the road, but are more impressive in person than from a vehicle. Eagle River Falls The river spans over continued on page 30

Eagle River falls continued from page 29
60 feet wide. The actual location of the falls is on the original Lake Superior Fuse Company. The falls flow over rocks and rejoin the river at the deep gorge. Haven Falls - A remote but easy to get to waterfall. The falls are fed by Haven Creek and are located on Lac La Belle. The waterfall area also is nice for a picnic area and rustic restrooms as well. The falls are roughly 20 feet high. Montreal Falls - The falls are located right on the Montreal River and make their way to Lake Superior. The falls are more rugged and cascade over volcanic rocks. The waterfalls continue to have amazing views that not only let you see the falls but all the area to the south. The park also offers a few flat ground camping sites on the shore of the waterfall. The camping area includes fire rings and a beach for kayakers.
Copper Falls - the final waterfall of the tour is the Copper Falls waterfall, which is roughly 200 feet. The falls make up a bulk of Owl Creek as the creek makes its way to Lake Superior. There is an old mine entrance which is not big enough to look in or to fall into. The creekbed continues to move downstream with multiple rock formations and tiny tributaries. When going upstream from Eagle Harbor Cutoff Road, has a number of drops, including wide plunges over slanted rock and some broken spurs. When you go downstream, the river deepens. So whether you are hanging out and just relaxing, to just going for the casual cruise in your ORV, to rugged off roading or want to explore other area attractions, Copper Harbor has all those options to offer you and more. •
