from the editor

Today is Friday, December 23, 2022 and Michigan delivered one of the best winter weather days! At least for those of us that love snow – we’re having a jumping out of our boots kind of day. Hope the sled is tuned, fueled, oiled, on the trailer, or better yet on the trail and ready to rock. My son, husband and friends tore up our yard last night

enjoying the first few flurries because all them were scheduled for work this morning, but I guarantee once 5 o’clock hits the shed door will be flying open and the sleds will be out again.

Truly today is a beautiful winter wonderland for all to enjoy today. I can remember being about 4 or 5 years old and being driven to Florida to visit my grandparents. We

left Michigan just after a storm much like this one. I can remember feeling sorry for our southern neighbors because they didn’t have snow like us! Little did I know, that many of them were quite happily living without all this frozen glory! But honestly to this day I would not trade places in order to live in a warmer climate. I am a Michigan girl to the core. I love to travel our nation but for me there is no place quite like home.

I kinda feel much more secure once the car or our truck enters the roads surrounded by our Great Lakes. Don’t know what it is, I just feel a bit safer and settled in my bones…I doubt that will ever change.

Hope each and everyone of you has a place that makes you feel the same. Whatever your day ahead has in store for you – hope it includes a great trail, great friends and an amazing ride! We look forward to seeing everyone at local events, chapter meetings and volunteering in support of Michigan Snowmobiling and ORVs. To find a local chapter in your area, visit the MISORVA website.

Until our next issue, be safe, enjoy the trails and remember to keep our veterans and first responders in your thoughts and prayers.

As alway, you can reach out to us at Michigan Snowmobiler at scottd@faragoassoc.com

The students of Houghton’s Michigan Tech University not only endure the 300 or so inches of snow that fall each year, they actively celebrate them with their annual Winter Carnival, set this year for February 8-11. This is the 101st year for the event, which is hosted by the university’s Blue Key Society. Though much of the fun takes place on Tech’s campus at Houghton’s south end, the fun sprawls out all over town and even across the canal into Hancock.

A winter celebration like no other that is sure to impress!
our town WINTER

Winter Carnival has changed and grown over the past century, but some old favorites still reign supreme, particularly the snow sculpting contest. Tech’s fraternities, sororities and other student organizations spend weeks building giant structures and dioramas that are astounding in their detail. (Then again, this is an engineering school after all.) No less elaborate are

the sculptures crafted in a group frenzy during the festive All Nighter. Both events are judged and bragging rights are taken very seriously.

Hugely popular each year are the Catholic masses held inside the impressive Ice Chapel of Our Lady of Sorrows, which is specially constructed each year for Carnival. If you choose to partake, dress warmly, come early to snag a spot and be prepared to stand throughout the service.

Other activities include human dog sleds, tug-o-wars, speedskating competitions, snow volleyball, curling and broomball, a hockey/ soccer hybrid played on ice that’s all the rage on campus. While much of the fun is student-centric, visitors are welcome to roam around and soak it all in.

The carnival atmosphere stretches throughout Houghton’s picture-perfect downtown of historic sandstone buildings. Sledders are seen just about everywhere — and the scent of exhaust is not unwelcome in shops and restaurants.

Among Houghton’s more popular downtown establishments are the Ambassador (splendid vintage murals and stained glass), the Downtowner (about as no-frills as you can get), and Joey’s for seafood. Suomi is a local’s favorite for breakfast, and craft beer lovers shouldn’t miss the Keweenaw Brewing Company or the

A snowmobile trail runs right along the Portage Canal a block off downtown Houghton, over the dedicated sled trail on the Portage Lift Bridge and through downtown Hancock – then all the way up further into the Keweenaw Peninsula and its

200-plus miles of trails. Mont Ripley provides a dramatic backdrop to the festivities, especially when lit up for nighttime skiing and tubing. This is the site of a Winter Carnival highlight, a breathtaking lighted torch run followed by fireworks (tentative date at press time is February 11). Hitting the Spot

Nothing works up an appetite like a day on the trails, and the Keweenaw Peninsula does not disappoint when it comes to options for meals. Here’s a look at two mainstays that are popular with both locals and tourists.

GINO’S

Not only is it right next to a popular trail, its sign even features a vintage snowmobile to let sledders know they are welcome at Gino’s in downtown Hancock at 800 Quincy Street.

The restaurant marks 100 years in 2023 but you’d never suspect that due to its contemporary feel. It’s gone through lots of changes through the decades, not all of

them for the best, and was shuttered in 2017 to the community’s dismay. But it’s charted a steady path forward since June 2018, when Daryll and Tracie Williams, along with a few other family members, gave it a much-needed overhaul.

“We always liked this place and one time I opened my fat mouth and said, ‘if it ever comes up for sale, we should buy it,’” Daryll says. “We had to do quite a bit of work to get it up to snuff.”

Indeed, the eatery had fallen on hard times and the previous owner lasted just two years before giving it back to the bank. But Gino’s is now a thriving business with dependably good food and service in a warm and friendly

atmosphere. The outdoor patio is especially popular and it’s not unheard of to see it open on unseasonably warm days, even in the dead of winter.

The restaurant features salads, burgers, sandwiches, wraps and homemade raviolis and signature marinara sauce; a “half and half” of spaghetti and meat or cheese ravioli is a longtime favorite.

The clientele is a mix of locals and visitors; Daryll has noticed quite a few sledders from Iowa and Illinois. “We try to make it a fun, clean environment where you can come and have a good time. We’re more on the family side than anything,” he says. “We are not just a bar.”

Word of mouth is responsible for the brisk business the restaurant does with sledders. “We are a member of the Keweenaw Snowmobile Club and sometimes have their events here,” Daryll says. “A lot of networking goes on on the trail. We have found that if you treat people good, they will spread the word.”

And what about that iconic sign? “It was there from previous owner, probably since the 1960s,” Daryll says. “It doesn’t light up anymore, so we will probably, eventually, get it rewired.”

THE HUT

Anyone who drives by The Hut on Highway 41 in tiny Kearsarge about a mile north of Calumet can’t help wondering about what’s inside. But you kind of have to see the sprawling Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired site to believe it.

The landmark restaurant dates to 1952 and has been added on to over the years. The result is an interesting hodgepodge of several dining rooms beneath a low wooden shake ceiling. There are walls made of rocks or wood planks, a lighted tunnel that leads to the back portion (duck if you’re taller than 6 feet), and a small pond and waterfall that are now, alas, empty as they await repair.

The décor is one of a kind dominated by relics from the mining days and vintage shiny booths. Each tabletop has unique surprises under its glass top. Some display old photos from the mining era or vintage postcards of Lake Superior lighthouses or freighters. One features the

Upper Peninsula rendered in pennies, and another showcases old menus (a root beer float in frosted mug was 25 cents, and a “Hut Dog Deluxe” could be had for $1.60.) It’s all quite charming and cozy, and the coffee is arguably the best in the Keweenaw.

The extensive menu offers up pasta, sandwiches, burgers and salads – but no alcohol. Of note is the Grasshopper Pie -- mint ice cream in an Oreo cracker crumb crust with whipped cream and hot fudge. Or, if you’re feeling especially daring, try the five-pound Lucchesi Burger. Named for a man who polished it all off in a halfhour, it costs $50 (and an extra $6 for cheese), but if you can match that feat, it’s free – and you even get your name on a plaque! •

SOO “I-500” AND FAST LANE ANTICIPATION

Hey!!!... Are you ready? I mean. this is it.  This is the time where we enter into our pre race mode of excitement and most of all. Unparalleled anticipation. It’s like. Going to a major concert or sporting event and you’ve been standing in line for hours knowing that you’re gonna get inside and you’re gonna witness the spectacle that you’ve wanted to see for weeks on end. In a matter of a few short days. We’re all gonna be embarking on the greatest snowmobile spectacle associated with Oval

ice racing and we’ll be where others only wish they could be.   Does it get any better than the SOO I-500?  At this point we’ve published a lot of articles over the past few months about the SOO I-500. We’ve tried to cover many things to keep you informed about the event. Some of the history. Some of what’s going on today in the world of Oval ice racing at the I500. And just a general synopsis of everything that it entails for your planning when considering what lies ahead for your enjoyment and excitement. We wanna

give you the experience that you’ll carry and remember for years to come.  We want this event to bring you back each year so we can share our passion and you’ll share imaging. with others.   So, read on and throughout your time reading this article, it’s time for YOU to do some imaging yourself.  It’s a natural thing to do. When you’re about to experience something exciting., you really want to do it and you really look forward to it. It’s the driving force that builds each and every individual’s personal track to

anticipation.  How does imaging relate to the SOO I-500? It affects everybody whether you’ve been here once, twice, 30 times, Or if you’ve never been here at all.   It allows y’all to manifest what the whole week of excitement is going to be like.  If you’re a snowmobiler or even a winter sports enthusiast, at some point. You’ll learn about the SOO I-500. and all it has to offer.  We’re hoping it will become one of the primary objectives for your future bucket list.  Let your imagination run wild, right?  Let me preempt the 54th running of the SOO  I-500 by simply stating this.... “No matter what your imagination lets you manifest about attending the SOO I-500. We can assure you, you’re gonna get way...... more than what you imagined.

At this point, let’s keep the article rolling. It’s time to get on a fast track to excitement and what we’re about to embark on in the few short days ahead. If you read some of the past publications over the past few months,

we hope that you took our advice seriously. Hopefully you’ve made plans for attending the 2023 I-500 race week.  We’ve tried to express all the I-500 has to offer.  It’s a vacation destination for the whole family.  All of us are at a time in our lives when the cost of living., fluctuating price of fuel, the expenses of food and lodging determines where you can go and get the most for your money and investment.

The SOO I-500 is a perfect resolve for your quest to spend time doing something unique, fun and  worth every cent spent.   It’s why we can’t stop speaking about how YOU can have it all in one setting for the whole family,   You’re able to snowmobile from most hotels on some of Michigan’s most outstanding trails and return to your hotel for an evening of fun every single

day of your vacation.  You and thousands like you will come together for a week of fun and thrills and can be a part of the SOO I-500 experience and series of events hosted all week long leading UP to the main I-500 race.

You want high octane fun?.......  When you witness these professional race teams on the track in a “pack” only split seconds apart and flying at speeds in excess of 100mph, you’ll be blown away.  When you see the thousands of spectators lining the track sides it will make you feel you’re truly a part of something special and unlike anything else in the world.  And YOU are a part of it all.   We urge you to review some of our past articles about this outstanding event and all it is.  We hope our insight and sharing of knowledge about this historical race has been entertaining and

16 | JANUARY • 2023 • MICHIGAN SNOWMOBILER + ORV

educational as well.

The SOO I-500 gets a five star rating by those who have been here time after time or for the first time ever.  Some of the responses we get when asking people “ So what did you think of the I-500?”  their responses are spot on.  Here are a few of the responses we’ve received.....

“ Holy Crap! those things are fast”....” I never had any idea how cool this is until coming here now”....” OMG, thousands of people, it’s so cool”... “There’s so much to do and it’s all so much fun”....” This place is awesome and the race is so huge”..... “ Never knew how big this track is, it’s  bleep’n awesome”...

“ Man, it’s so much fun here...”,  “ This race is brutal, these guys are tough! “..... “ We’ll be back, the race is amazing and the track color is beautiful”.... “Seriously? We thought the race was on snow. The ice is so cool”.....

And the number one response goes to...... A  couple dudes from Ohio who said ... “ The people here are so friendly. .. the race is great and the party is even better”.

Something to be said about the community that pulls together when hosting this magnificent event.  It’s the integrity of the people from Sault Ste. Marie and surrounding communities that need to be recognized.  Their family history for volunteerism and commitment to the community and events are priceless.

The same goes for our partners from the north

across the river in the sister city of Sault Ste. Marie, Canada.  Snowmobiling is a way of life in these areas.  Building the SOO I-500 seems natural for the surroundings and environment.  These people want to share their passion and hospitality with others knowing it will bring people together as it has within their own lives.  Little did a handful of guys setting in a local restaurant have any Clue as to how their imaginations would influence so many winter sports enthusiasts. They had no clue and only imagined that maybe someday. their own I-500 mile race would gain national exposure. Thus becoming known as the “granddaddy” of oval ice racing worldwide.  These few men had no idea how much their imaginations would affect the winter sports recreation world. They proved to be snowmobile racing pioneers with a vision that only a few people  Could wrap their minds around.  For these guys, it all started with a passion for fun and a thrill they shared for riding snowmobiles.  Collectively, their imaginations and dream became a reality.  They found support from family, friends and commercial businesses who understood snowmobiling as a way of life and before long.... it became a community event which now has become the largest single event hosted in the Eastern U.P. region and the oldest, longest, fastest and toughest snowmobile endurance race on

earth.  Today in 2023, it is recognized as a world class professional race no less important than NASCAR or any other professional race.  It’s gone from being a backyard event to being streamed worldwide on major networks.  It’s a mainstay in racing history in a class of its own that runs parallel to other professional races and is a total volunteer project.  The ONLY professional race hosted by volunteers.

Yeah.... don’t tell me the SOO I-500 isn’t something special.... There’s nothing like it anywhere.  I’d like to take a moment to share the bright side of one volunteer’s  I-500 experience and how he got here. This man is a legend within the snowmobile racing arena. He’s known for his racing ability and good will he spreads throughout the industry.  He is also our own SOO I-500 race flagman.  He sets high above the I-500 track in the flag tower along the front straightaway.  His name is Roger Britt.  He has been oval ice racing since 1971 and has numerous championship winnings to support his career in racing.  His first race at the SOO was in... 1971.  His last race

was in 2012 where he won the senior classic hosted at the SOO and Eagle River Track in Wisconsin.  He has flagged the SOO I-500 for 20 consecutive years.  His commitment to the sport and ability to be a spokesperson for the sport in general is well respected.

His home town is AuGres, Michigan. His whole family has been involved in racing for decades.  Even his father who raced with only one hand.  Roger is retiring from his duties as our flagman.  I wanted to share this because it shows that no matter where you’re from, if you want to become a part of the I-500 family of volunteers, simply get on our web site and let us know.  It also is a statement supporting the family history behind the sport in general.  So many people involved in snowmobile racing have a family history that has brought them full circle and to the I-500.  Being from the SOO or not, volunteering on an individual basis or from a community standpoint, the support is there at the SOO  and it’s something the whole community and State of Michigan can be proud of.

It’s amazing how one community

has pulled together over 54 consecutive years on a total voluntary basis thus building a world class event that represents their way of life for fun and excitement.  The commitment to the community as individuals says a ton about the integrity of citizens and the commercial sector U.P. people. These are people who had imagination and a passion to share and it obviously continues to this very next race.  Take no one and nothing for granted.  These people are special and their hospitality is second to none.

Where do we stand at this point?  How are things shaping UP?  Will there be enough ice to run the I-500?  These and many more questions are coming to mind.  Here’s where we are at and where we’ll be going soon. By the time you read this, our track building crews are deep into building the best track possible for SAFETY and racing.  We’ve been packing the ground with our recently acquired snowpacker.  Packing beats the frost into the ground and once we’re done with that,  We’ll commence putting water down to build the ice-track.  Our opening ceremonies are in the

Who got you into snowmobiling and when; what was their influence in your regard to the sport?

My brother-in-law & co-owner of KMW Racing was the most influential in getting me into snowmobiling. We used to ride out to his deer camp not long after my sister and Keith started dating. I started out on a Yamaha Bravo when I was about 12 and quickly moved my way up to a 1992 Arctic Cat EXT 550. It was a nice summer night in 2015 when I stopped in for a quick visit with the Krentz family. As we sat around the table Keith looked at me and said “I’m starting up a race

Keith Krentz

Who got you into snowmobiling and when; what was their influence in your regard to the sport? My father, as he took me to every race locally including the I-500 virtually from the time I could walk.

When did you start racing and what is your proudest achievement so far on the track? 2016, getting the Soo I-500 Pole Award.

What is your career goal? Winning the MIRA points championship, and winning the Soo I-500.

team.  I’ve sat on the outside of turn 3 in Lincoln long enough and its time to move into the infield.” As I gathered my thoughts I responded with, “Well I can lend you my toolbox for the winter months.” Not long after that Keith and Luke took delivery of our first race sled. 30 days after that I found myself hooking onto a 34 ft Haulmark Race Trailer. Once I had the trailer I decided to purchase a replica toolbox and duplicate all of my tools just for the race trailer.  Needless to say my initial offering of just loaning Keith my toolbox for the winter months kind of snowballed…no pun intended. To add to the complexity of that summer, my wife was pregnant with our second child. She often reminds me

of it when life gets busy with, “Hey, remember the time you started a race team when I was pregnant.”

When

did

you start racing and

what is your proudest achievement so far on the track?

So funny story, I’ve never raced a snowmobile. I actually have never even taken a full speed lap with a helmet on any of our race sleds. I am purely a wrench and a problem solver.

What is your career goal?

I get a lot of satisfaction with consistent incremental improvements with our race team, but in the end I would like to win a MIRA Championship as well as the I-500.

How did you become part of this racing team?

Another crew member, Ryan Stevens and I were NASCAR fans at a young age and would regularly go to the races at MIS. I also enjoyed wrenching on vehicles, dirt bikes, & snowmobiles. I’ve always had the idea of wanting to be a part of a race team from a young age.  It just took an opportunity to cross my plate to make the idea come to life. I grew up about 20 miles away from the Lincoln track and went to high school just down the road from it.  I would find myself going to that race even though I didn’t know anyone personally in snowmobile racing.  It really took that one night with Keith to rope me in and make it happen.

How did you become part of this racing

team?

To step from the outside of the track to the inside after a lifetime of watching.  Having a son, brother in law and a crew dedicated to high end competition took this endeavor from a dream to a reality.

Dustin Schwandt

My name is Dustin Schwandt I am a driver for the KMW #7 Enduro race team. I guess first off a little about myself. I’m 33 years-old from Fox Lake, Wisconsin. My family consists of my  wife Becca, and daughter Harper. Now to answer some of your questions.

Who got you into snowmobiling and when; what was their influence in your regard to the sport?

As for how I got into snowmobiling, growing up in Central Wisconsin my family has always had snowmobiles. When I was younger my family did quite a bit of trail riding. We were lucky and made a few trips up to the U.P. also. To me it was like being a kid in a candy shop there. This is what got me hooked to the sport.

When did you start racing and what is your proudest achievement so far on the track?

Growing up my uncles raced sleds In the late 90’s and early 2000’s and I thought it was the coolest

thing ever. As I got older I always wanted to be like them. When i was able to afford to race I got myself a race sled. After trying snocross for a year I found out that I was past the peak for that already being 25 years old. My uncle Todd who previously raced told me if I wanted try racing cross country he’d try it with me. So for the past 7 years Todd and I have been running the Cor Powersports cross country series all over northern Minnesota and Wisconsin. He has been my biggest mentor and without him I wouldn’t be where I am today.

There has been many big highlights in my race career. Probably the one that may not be the biggest but means the most

driver

Luke Krentz

Who got you into snowmobiling and when; what was their influence in your regard to the sport?

I remember going to the Michigan Cat 500 with my dad and grandpa for as long as I can remember, sitting on the center council to see over the dash down to the track. Fast forward 15 years and I am sitting on a different seat, from a different perspective , looking up to see my grandpa watching from the same truck, in the same #1 parking spot in turn 3 we always watched from was a truly wild experience for me.

The annual Soo I-500 trip with my dad also holds place to some of my favorite memories growing up. It’s a weekend I looked forward to the whole year.

When did you start racing and what is your proudest achievement so far on the track?

I believe we started racing in 2016 in the Semi-Pro class. My favorite racing memory has got to be setting the pole at the soo last year. As a kid I remember getting off the school bus and running to the computer as fast as I could to watch the live stream qualifying and always counting how many Arctic Cats were qualified that year. I never in a million years dreamed I would be there doing that let alone setting the pole. That truly was a wild experience.

What is your career goal?

My career goal would be to win the I-500 for sure. It’s my biggest dream and I think about it every day.  I feel like we have all the pieces in place to do so now it just takes alittle luck. continued on page 26 continued on page 26

Ryan Trout

Who got you into snowmobiling and when; what was their influence in your regard to the sport?

My dad bought a kitty cat for me when I was 19 months old and started riding alot and he entered me into my first race at 22 months old. It was a radar run and I got First place and ever since I have been hooked.

When did you start racing and what is your proudest achievement so far on the track?

I started racing more seriously at 4 years old and I not only raced snowmobile but also quads. I don't really have one moment that stands out as far as my proudest achievement but I would say leading

the soo 500 my rookie year for 70 laps and then getting third in the race is one of my top or winning Semi pro class in the I-500 by putting 18 minutes on the field with 102° fever on the second day of the 3 day race.

What is your career goal?

I really only have one goal left that I want to achieve in racing and that is to win the Soo 500

How did you become part of this racing team?

I have been a factory arcticcat rider for a long time and wanted to stick with the Brand and they are one of the few at the soo the race the arcticcat.

How did you become part of this racing team?

I guess I don’t really have an answer to how we formed this team. It kinda just happened. So I’d like to take this question and thank the people that make this all possible, especially my family. The sacrifices they make is incredible. To our generous sponsors that support us. And to the team that spends time away from there families to be at the track, at the shop, or both. We pride ourselves in sportsmanship outside the trailer and inside of the trailer no person is more important than the next, it’s an all of us or none of us type attitude.

to me would be winning the factory stock race at the world championship race in Eagle River. My uncle has won there back in the day when he raced there. It had always been a dream of mine to win and have a Eagle of my own. Now I can check that off as the proudest moment.

What is your career goal?

What are my goals? I guess probably the biggest one for me is making it through the season healthy and no injuries. I’m just your average guy that needs to be at work on Monday. Second I’d really like to win a pro Enduro race. We’ve been close just haven’t quite been able to seal the deal yet. Also finish all 500 laps of the SOO-I500 is a goal of mine.

How did you become part of this racing team?

Over the last few years I have been focusing on ice racing (oval and cross country). In 2019 I took my first crack at Enduro racing.  I ran the first Enduro race held at the Eagle River with my stock cross country sled finishing 2nd. After that I knew Enduro racing was something I’d like to try more of. That following summer I received a email from Mike Kloety who is our race director asking if I’d be interested joining the KMW Enduro team. I was ecstatic to say the least. After discussing it with my teammate/uncle I decided to commit to running with them full time. I’ve now been part of the team for the last 3 years. It has been a amazing experience with the best group of guys. Looking forward to what this season has in store for us.

Jim Adema’s Twin-Engine 1972 Thunderjet (story here a few days ago) at 108 mph? While impressive and the engineering was incredible for what they did in a short amount of time it’s not. WAIT!  WHAT?

This is a story of a man, his family, and friends out to break the Guinness World Snowmobile Speed Record, they used a Sno-Jet Thunderjet as the starting point. And for good reason— light and well designed. Then they made it their own. But first, a little about the man behind the effort.

When it comes to Michigan Snowmobile History Detroit Metro’s Lynn Hicks left his mark on not only the state, but the world.  He was on the Massey-Ferguson Detroit based Ski-Whiz Development and Design Team with Thomas Denny and Jack Rose. Lynn worked with the famous Bob Bracy and John Drawe as Chief Field Test Engineer for Leisure Vehicles Incorporated (Raider snowmobiles). Elsewhere, Lynn was often called upon for his business savvy, technical expertise, and he had of wide range of talented family and friends in many different technical aspects of motor and powersports to help out with complex engineering issues.

Also, to top all this off, Lynn owned Hicks Engines and Engineering in Northville—one of the largest Hirth engine and parts distributors in the world. They say idle hands are the Devil’s workshop, Lynn was on the go 24/7, but never sacrificed quality over quantity.

Lynn had a very successful career racing, building snowmobile race engines, and helping other racers. At the peak of it all somehow the timing was right for a new challenge—break the world’s snowmobile speed record.

He, his family, and friends over a couple of years turned the Thunderjet into a force to be noticed and feared in Speed Run Circles. Lynn

did most of the engine work himself. A lot of magic with many different Hirth parts. Just glancing at the photos you think it’s just a Hirth 793cc Honker Triple built up. That is not the case (pardon the pun)!  Lynn custom made a super monster Hirth 975cc Triple by using Twin Free air Hirth 650 parts. Wow! He had friend and expert machinist Ray Hitchcock from Portland (Michigan) engineer and craft two Hirth 650 engine crankshafts into a triple crank. Lynn ported and polished Hirth 650 cylinders (325cc each). Two stroke motorcycle and snowmobile racers often take the term, “There’s no replacement for displacement.” with a grain of salt. The

real secret of creating ultimate power from a two-stroke engine is in the exhaust. Lynn was a wizard when it came to designing and hand making custom exhaust systems— he even had his own Dyno for testing engine performance! Next came an issue that most wouldn’t think of, how do you get the correct amount of fuel into a custom engine? Lynn

testing aerodynamics.

Lynn named the sled “Thunder Chicken.”

Donald Pitzen was tapped to drive the sled in the record attempts. Pitzen had a lot of snowmobile racing experience and was darn good at it. He was cool under pressure. Lynn liked and trusted him.

Santo’s Polaris with the motor set-up by wellknown engine builder Jerry “Doc” Bork. In the end, they all learned much. It was a good day.

After another couple tries over two years on Anchor Bay Speed Runs and other events Lynn felt it was best to find another location for a myriad of reasons.  After some research Union Lake was chosen.  The lake was known for consistent smooth ice and being just shy of 1.5 miles long it worked because not only

was Thunder Chicken fast, but it was also quick. February 27, 1977, would be a day to remember.

The team and the sled were ready; coordination with timing officials to be there went great—the big day came. Lynn never let the sled go 100% for the first couple practice runs. They started out with a Lynn standard then they wicked it up each run. Once the sled was on near final dial-in the only minor issue was keeping the snowmobile on the ground because

too much air was getting under it. Minor issue? To the talented Lynn Hicks and his team they quickly worked through it. Now was time for that 100%.

The local snowmobile club was called the Union Lake Snow Owls.  No Owl was going to catch Lynn’s Thunder Chicken that day—they did it!  With ice in his veins Pitzen blazed pass the timing gate at just under 136 mph to break Yvon’s 1972 Guinness record. WHAT A RIDE (that must have been)!

Later that summer after Guinness office review of methods and standards it was official, Lynn’s Thunder Chicken team held the Snowmobile Speed Record.

Next year Lynn’s team tried to up their record. However, it wasn’t

in the cards. Soon after Snowmobile Speed Run sleds became very exotic due to rule changes, most really didn’t looked like regular snowmobiles. The team proud of what they accomplished just went on to other interests.

Lynn is sadly gone, but his competitive snowmobile spirit lives on through his relatives — Michigan’s Brownlee family of snowmobile racers and Brownlee Boys Ice Oval Race Team on the MIRA Circuit who also compete at the Soo I-500. •

Huge thank you to the Brownlee and Hicks families for allowing access to their extensive photos and documentation.  This story is in honor and lasting memory of Lynn Hicks. If anyone has more to add please reach out to Michigan Snowmobiler + ORV. Thanks!

OGEMAW HILLS Snowmobile Club

Snowmobiling in 1967 was a new and instant hit in the winter wonderland we all proudly call home that is known as Michigan — more specifically the great Ogemaw Hills of West Branch Michigan. There were dealerships popping up all over the placeheck in many cases if you bought 3 or 4 sleds of a new brand you could get a much better deal if you agreed to become the local “dealer” and hang that shingle out and sell sleds to all your friends. What with over 300 brands of sleds being made by the early/mid 70’s –there were dealerships in garages, party stores, lawn mower shops, major brand stores like Sears, JC Penny’s , Montgomery Wards , tractor dealerships, car dealers- you get the point.

West Branch was no different — except for a place called “Frank Alley Sales Ski Doo,” which in the early 60’s was one of the first large scale Ski Doo brand dealers in the

state right here in West Branch Michigan. It was built by Frank Alley and his family. Frank and a bunch of his fellow sled nuts and friends also decided it was time to organize a formal Snowmobile club in the area- so they all met on Dec 10th 1967 and finalized and formalized their efforts by starting the Ogemaw Hills Snowmobile Club (OHSC).

OHSC, for the last 55 years, has continued to grow and serve our local sport and community at the same time. We have never had a break in service and are currently one of two snowmobile clubs in the state that have been in continuous service since starting in 1967.

Some highlights from the past; OHSC was the first club in the state with an on site “pavilion” that was built at the south end of our current location, with outside BBQ grills and an “official” DNR style outhouse, so this became a gathering place

to park and ride from but also to stay and have an outdoor winter (or summer too) picnic and share in the days tales from the trail.

OHSC was also one of the first clubs in the state to have a formal “warming hut” out on the trail- and this remains a pride and joy of our club to this day. The club works hard every fall to cut, split and stack umpteen face cords of good dry firewood for use all winter long at the OHSC “Bob & Noretta Humperts Memorial Beanpot Warming Shack” on trail 6. The fire pretty much burns nonstop for 4 months, warming up riders from all over the snow belt. They can also grab info sheets on our club and even join the club

from the bulletin board – or just double check the map to see where they have been or where they are going. We host a “free hot dog roast” at the warming shack most years, and this goes over very well too.

Speaking of trails, the members from OHSC work very hard to maintain almost 110 miles of some the most picturesque and fun trails in the middle of the mitten! We have lots of elevation changes, curves, several distinct changes in the surrounding geological and natural features, some hidden gems such as a few overlooks that you’d swear you are in upstate N.Y., and lots more. All while enjoying some of the best maintained trails in the state.

OHSC has always been a very community service driven organization too, our history books are filled with countless examples of the club doing great things for the local West Branch and Rose City communities – as well as supporting our sport along the way too.

This continues to this day, with our club doing many very positive things to help support our local neighbors and friends, as well as to help keep growing our sport at the same time. Our recent donations are listed below.

Another really fun way we have continued to grow our club over the last 11 years has been with our annual OHSC Vintage Show, Ride and

Open House- which is held the last Saturday in Feb- this year it’s Feb 25th, 2023 - celebrating our 55th Anniversary. This show and ride have grown in to one of the ‘must attend” shows with a guided ride in the state. We have had over 1000 people and over 300 old sleds in attendance the last few years and it continue to grow each year. We also gain on avg of 10- 15 new members from this event every year too.

This is simply a fun family filled outdoor old snowmobile day in Michigan’s great white winter wonderland here in the Ogemaw Hills. We have a huge bonfire, with our world famous “rake dogs”

36 | JANUARY • 2023 • MICHIGAN SNOWMOBILER + ORV

for everyone to enjoy (donations welcome of course) We have the club house all heated up if you need to get in out of the cold for a spell- heck sit down and enjoy the big screen with of course old sled videos playing too. Or you may want some of the hot chocolate and coffee that our hard-working team keeps fresh (also donations welcome here too)

I would like to thank you for the Choko jacket and bibs.  It looks great!  I look forward to using it on the snowmobile rides next season. My husband and I rode in the Cadillac area and the UP from Newberry to Paradise when our kids were young.  My husband pulled a sleigh behind his snowmobile with 2 of the kids in it, while i rode two-up with the other.  We had many good times with the kids on the trail.  Now that we are empty nesters  we still love to ride in the Munising, Grand Marais and Seney areas.  We

You can also shop at our OHSC gear display and stock up on the latest really cool OHSC gear from any era- old and new styles both! But you really must get one of our black and white OHSC Vintage Beanies- they are spotted at events everywhere you go in the winter seasonand everyone smiles when you comment about them.

Our event runs all day and is a non-judged show- bring what you have and have fun. We have a formal Flag Raising and National anthem at 1000am, then mid-day we have a short ceremony to honor our

recent fallen members who helped get us here. Then we draw the winning ticket for the annual “youth snowmobile raffle” and pick the name of the best grandma, grampa, mom day etc. of the year who get to give the winning sled to the family to enjoy our great sport. We raffle off a nice shape youth 120cc youth snowmobile that we have made sure is in great working order- and the ticket sales are held at our event and others throughout the year. This is our main source for community money so everyone buys lots to help their chances.

lighthouses.  Thanks again. Kim Fredenburg

And then the guided trail ride is next in the day’s agenda. Usually, 100 or more old sleds join us on the ride, with all going out and enjoying the guided ride through our beautiful Ogemaw hills. We have a good sized crew of helpers following behind to drag back those that can’t make the full trip- but everyone comes back with nothing but smiles and some great stories of the ride (people, stories and memories are the heartbeat of this hobby).

The mens Snowmobile suit Winner was Joel Reeves of Franksville, WI.

Our club continues to grow and expand in many other areas too- including helping support our summer dirt sports of all kinds. We dirt groom several times a year and continue our hard work and pride in keeping our trails in excellent shape. The last couple of years we have also hosted a brand new sport to our club grounds- and that continued on page 38

The races were composed of racers from Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania and a group of Canadian riders. The group made up one of the biggest 200cc classes in series history with 18 total riders. While also seeing some decent numbers throughout other classes including the beginner class.
The day was made up of two qualifying rounds and then the finals for the overall win. The early qualifying rounds were controlled by some of the Canadian riders. As Jack Gelinas picked up 5 total qualifying wins, with one coming in in his transition 8-11 class and swept his 200cc heat races in the 6-9 age group and won both rounds in the 10-13 age group. Jade Bidinot and Connor Muir picked up qualifying round wins in their Open Outlaw 120 class.
In the three biggest classes of the day, Sam Conaway swept qualifying in the Pro Women’s class. While Kenny Goike made the jump out to Pro Lite and Pro Class and opened some eyes.

Our dining group was well impressed with how the tables were set up as the double tables with chairs all the way around them aloud for communication without being limited to just talking to a couple of people. Our group included Randy Smith, Jamie Bishop as well as Dan and Robin Taylor and Phil and Cheryl Alvesteffer. And of course our favorite girl Carla Buchan out on an evening dinner with us, since Tom was gone trout fishing. It was truly a great evening of food and drink along with some great fellowship with family and friends.
