from the editor

A

t Michigan Snowmobiler and ORV the excitement of the 55th running of the I-500 is in the books! However, as I write this editor letter, the race is still 10 days away. I’m hoping all race enthusiasts have as an amazing of a race to watch as last year’s photo finish. You can’t even think about this year without remembering the “made for movie” photo finish of the 2023 race. Hours and hours of year long preparation come down to the 9 hours of racing on February 3, 2024. Hope you found your own way to enjoying this Granddaddy of all oval ice racing events. Many of us are already preparing for 2025! So keep checking the I-500 website for updates and watch our Under the Helmet series for information on your favorite team. As usual, we try to pack each issue with all things Michigan, Snowmobile and ORVs. But this issue is special to all of us as we pay tribute to our long-time writer Jim Duke. I hope as you read the article written by Jim’s daughter Karyn that you become inspired by his spirit of family, community, service to our nation and volunteerism. The loss of friends is difficult, but in this case try not to dwell on the loss but look for motivation to become more than you were today. There

are so many ways to serve and volunteer, whether it be for the Snowmobile and ORV community or not. Always strive to be more than you were today. Your efforts could matter to so many. If you were out and about in Michigan – volunteering, traveling or just looking out your window – the weather this week was breathtaking. In our area and anywhere North – the snow on the trees made each drive I took this last week a masterpiece in Michigan beauty. I hope you were as lucky to see the impressive displays that mother nature provides. As we close out this issue, all of us at Michigan Snowmobiler and ORV are thinking of all those who will be traveling to enjoy the I-500 as a volunteer, race fan, Board Member, Race Team, Race Announcer and members of the media. We are looking forward to seeing everyone soon. As always, please remember to keep our veterans and first responders in your thoughts and prayers. Be safe and enjoy the trails until next issue.

As alway, you can reach out to us at Michigan Snowmobiler at scottd@faragoassoc.com

team owner

Chris Richter

Who got you into snowmobiling and when; and what was their influence on you with regard to the sport? It was my mother and father that turned me on to the sport of snowmobiling. I grew up hearing stories of how my mom went snowmobiling for the entire day, the day before I was born. She says the riding was amazing, and the snow was good, so being 9-months pregnant didn’t stop her at all. So, one might say, it is truly in my blood. I have memories of riding with her as a little kid, but I first really started riding snowmobiles around the age of 8, about 1979, when I would ride my dad’s 1971 Ski-Doo Olympic at my aunt Arlene’s property. Dad would haul it out in the back of his pickup, and my cousins out there had other snowmobiles and we would ride them back and forth across a hay field on their property for hours on end. At least that’s how I remember it. Then at age 10, my mother surprised me with a used 1969 Arctic Cat Panther for my birthday present, and I’ve been hooked ever since. As far as influence goes, it was my good friend Toby Javin, another accomplished snowmobile racer today, who continued from page 8

had the most influence on why I love the sport today. Before I was blessed with that old ‘69 Panther, Toby would invite me over to hang out at his house, where his dad Joe was a huge Polaris snowmobile fan, and who was also a racer, and back then as a kid, he was like a hero to me. Someone who knew snowmobiles and had actually raced one!! I remember looking at his pictures and listening to his stories; he could talk the talk, and from what I know, walk the walk. Toby and I would ride double around his house on an old Polaris Colt, (Colt, if I remember correctly), changing drivers and trying to show each other up, and with every lap we imagined turning laps on the once famous TC 250 track. Toby would tell me stories of his dad, and then show me how it was done. We were superheroes in

our minds, and those days seemed to last forever. When did you start racing and what is your proudest achievement so far on the track? Well, my snowmobile racing days started as a snow cross driver back in 1997, but since this interview isn’t about me as a driver, I’ll save all those stories for another day. The day when I really started racing as a team owner was the day that I brought Kyle home a brand-new Arctic Cat Kitty Cat; back in 1998. He took to that sled with nothing but passion and would spend hours and hours, and hours circling our yard. Eventually he learned to jump snowbanks and then I knew it was on. I loaded him up and took him with me racing every weekend, where I entered him in all the Kitty Cat races at my continued on page 10

snow cross events. He was a natural on that thing and he now has many trophies on his shelf from these events, which I credit to fueling the program we have today. I supported him through the 8- to 10-year-old 380 fan classes, the 10- to 13-year-old 380 and 440 fan classes, and finally at the highest Junior level 14–16-year-old 440 factory liquid cooled race sleds. We started racing in the ASRA (American Snow Cross Racing Association) and the CSRA (Canadian Snow Cross Racing Association), and then the Michigan Sno-X Racing Association series, and then WSA and WPSA, and we finally closed out this chapter racing both the ISOC regional and national series in 2009. So, while all of this set the stage for where we are today with RCI Racing, my proudest achievements on track didn’t come until just 2 seasons ago, when Kyle and O’Ryan, as second year rookies, and first season teammates drove our # 62 RCI Racing

sled to a their first top 10 Pro Enduro finish, 9th place at the Kinross UP Merchants 250, and then when I got to watch Kyle walk across the stage at the MIRA awards banquette and collect a plaque for finishing 10th in season Championship Points for the year. Two top ten accomplishments in just their first season together as codrivers, and all the while surrounded by well-seasoned Pro Enduro drivers and teams. Some of them who they grew up with as their hero’s! These two guys, Kyle and O’Ryan are now my heroes! I admire, respect, and love both guys for every accomplishment they’ve made. What is your career goal as an owner? Well, if racing is truly in your blood, then there is nothing more important than winning, and since racing is in my blood, my career goal as a team owner, father of a driver, surrogate father to my other driver, I want nothing more than to see this

team and these two amazing drivers and young men to win one of the MIRA Pro Enduro events, and the Soo I-500. I know this is a huge goal, but anything is possible with hard work, commitment, and lots of GOOD luck! What were the driving factors to start the race team? As crazy as this story might sound, it was COVID that was the single most influential factor in me starting this team. After seeing the world change during the pandemic, and blatantly realizing that there are only so many days in any person’s life, my attitude toward doing what we want to do really shined through. Kyle and I had just finished one of our 14-hour workdays, and we were both grumbling about not living life the way we wanted to. We talked about the good old days of snow cross racing, and how much it

shaped us, how much we loved it, and how much we missed it. Well, with regional snow cross not being a big boom at that time, and a desire to try something new. We had only been to the Soo I-500 a few times, but we knew that this was a race we always wanted to run. So, overnight we decided we were going to race the Soo I-500; Afterall, life is short, so why not jump right in? The only problem was that it wasn’t that easy. I called and talked to Bill Cryderman, who informed me that since Kyle hadn’t been on a race sled since 2009 (some 12 years past), and since he had never drove on an ice oval, let alone never drove a Pro Enduro Mod Sled, that he would need to compete in a couple of 1/2 mile MIRA events before being approved to drive in this Pro only event. Well, that’s when it got a little more complicated. Now we need to not only build a Soo sled, but we needed to figure out how to make one go around a 1/2-mile track. And guess what, it was September already! So, my next call was to Ben Hayes at the Polaris Factory to see if I could get some help. While Ben was most helpful, he informed me that all the 2020 600R’s were already sold, and that he didn’t even have enough parts to build a Soo sled in his shop. So, as determined as I was, I found a 2020 600R through the snow cross scene, and we jumped in the truck and raced to Wisconsin to pick it up. Once back home, I again reached out to Ben and asked him to get me everything he had available. I knew he was hesitant, because he kept encouraging me to wait for a season and get a new 2021 with the Soo kit, but I explained my situation and he jumped on board. Over the next few weeks were able to secure everything we needed to build what we thought was an ice oval enduro sled was. And we were close! Well, sort of close. Ugh. We showed up at Eagle River for the season opener, and when we put that thing on ice, I wasn’t sure whether to run and hide, or stay and fight, but I’m glad I chose the latter, because this one event is what has made our team so strong. Our ability not to give up. Our ability to accept failure is a part of obtaining our success. We had so many great and exceedingly kind people offer to help us, but in our minds, we needed to learn what not to do, in order to learn what to do to find the success I believe we have been blessed with. In the end, my passion for racing and winning races is the driving factor in owning this #62 RCI Racing Pro Enduro Team.

driver

Kyle Richter Who got you into snowmobiling and when; what was their influence on your regard to the sport? My Father, Chris Richter introduced me to racing in 1998, but I believe he got me the Kitty Kat in 1997… I can remember riding that Kitty Kat for hours on end. I would ride that thing until it ran out of gas, then fill it up and ride some more... it was somewhat of an obsession. All winter long we would watch Snocross on ESPN and the most influential racers at the time for me were Chris Vincent, Blair Morgan, and Toni Haikonen. I looked up to those guys and it was my dream to be a professional snowmobile racer. Mark Ranshaw, my Uncle, was also a huge influence and support to my racing career… we rode almost every weekend in the winter when we weren’t racing, and he managed to be at the majority of my races. It was always my Dad, Uncle Mark, and I… without those two, I wouldn’t be racing snowmobiles today. I can’t forget how incredibly fortunate I am to have my Mom, Lisa Richter, and three sisters; Brittany, Lily, and Daisey as huge supporters of my racing career… they are always there, pushing me to be better. When did you start racing and what is your proudest achievement so far on the track? I started racing in 1998 in the ASRA and CSRA Snocross circuits, racing in the Kitty Kat Class. From there I raced all the way up to the junior 16-17 class in 2010. A combination of poor winters and a declining economy inevitably led to me hanging up the racing dream, until 2021. My proudest achievement to this date has to be making it into the 2nd World Championship Pro Enduro at Eagle River. It wasn’t continued on page 12 MICHIGAN SNOWMOBILER + ORV • FEBRUARY • 2024

necessarily glorious, but I managed to put the #62 sled into the show by winning the last chance qualifier for a 21st place starting position out of 22 starting sleds. O’Ryan Bosek and I managed to finish 13th in the WC Pro Enduro that year and 10th place overall in the MIRA points series. What is your career goal? At this point, my biggest goal would be to just finish the SOO I-500. I have been to the race two times as a driver now, and have not managed to finish the race. It definitely takes a lot more effort than most people will ever realize. You hear hushed talk from other teams about the gremlins at the SOO, but you have no clue what they are talking about until you experience them yourself. Pretty much anything that can go wrong, will go wrong when you’re at that race… you just have to be prepared

to fix it. We are hoping to have a different story to report at the end of the 2024 race. How did you become part of this racing team? Well, 2019-2020 was pretty rough… Covid really put a stop to the whole world. My Dad and I were pretty bored, nothing seamed to be going on and we needed a new hobby. Snowmobile racing has always been in our blood and we have watched the I-500 for years. Racing at the SOO was something we had always talked about and the boredom we experienced from Covid was enough encouragement to make the dream a reality. We went to Wisconsin, bought a used Snocross sled, and started trying to figure out how to build an ice sled, as neither of us had any experience in the roundyround world. It was quite a learning

12 | FEBRUARY • 2024 • MICHIGAN SNOWMOBILER + ORV

curve, but my Dad definitely has an amount of perseverance unmatched by most and we managed to build our first enduro sled. With the help of co-driver Scott Odom, we raced our first MIRA season in 2020-2021 when the I-500 was canceled. Scott helped me race my first pro season by driving as the primary starting driver… this allowed me to earn my pro-driver status. By gaining my prodriver status, I now had a chance at racing the SOO. Most people do not know this, but the SOO is pretty strict with their requirements of who can actually race the legendary super oval. During that year, we met the Bosek family which led to the #62 RCI Racing team finishing off the season with myself and O’Ryan Bosek as the active drivers. The Bosek family has been an instrumental part of the successes we have had so far. continued on page 14

driver

O’Ryan Bosek Who got you into snowmobiling and when; and what was their influence on you with regard to the sport? My Dad (Jim Bosek) purchased the family a Kitty kat when I was 4 years old. I drove it all the time and I put numbers on it to make it a race sled. My Grandparents, my dad and most of his siblings raced snowmobiles. Listening to those race stories and watching snowmobile racing has always been a huge influence on my desire to race. When did you start racing and what is your proudest achievement so far on the track? I started racing Minnesota Cross Country in 2017 and my first MIRA enduro race was in 2020. My proudest achievement is when Kyle

and I put our RCI Racing sled in 9th place at Kinross. What is your career goal? My career goal has always been to win the Soo I-500. Soo I500 has been part of my family’s winter past time for as long as I can remember. I have been attending the Soo I 500 as a spectator sitting on the snow banks in the pits and then becoming old enough to help in the pits. Being just a part of the Soo I 500 is an achievement in its own. Kyle and myself with RCI Racing are proud to have been able to race the past two years. How did you become part of this racing team? During Covid the Minnesota Cross Country schedule was limited because of MN

14 | FEBRUARY • 2024 • MICHIGAN SNOWMOBILER + ORV

restrictions. However MI was still allowed to have races. So I started racing Semipro enduros on Nate Schramski Pro enduro sled in MIRA. At my first MIRA race in Gaylord is where I met Chris and Kyle Richter. Over the next few races we hung out and talked alot about my Cross country racing and the adjustments that I have done to my snowmobile to help with handling. Right before the last race Chris contacted me and asked if I would want to race the Pro enduro in Lincoln. I said yes sounds like fun! Kyle and I had a really good first race together. After the season Chris and Kyle asked if I wanted to join the team and race MIRA and the Soo I500. I really enjoy racing for RCI Racing and look forward to improving the team this year. •

The Man, the Mentor & the Legend

Jim Duke J

ames Wallace Duke, age 86, died peacefully at home surrounded by his family on October 10, 2023. He was born on May 18th, 1937 to Josephine and Thomas Duke and raised on a farm with his 2 brothers and a sister. The family made the move from Texas to California during his school years. In high school, James joined the California Cadet Core, and so began his love of the military. As soon as he graduated, he enlisted in the Navy. It was during this time he met the love of his life Constance Marie. After 2 weeks they were wed. James retired from active duty after 20 years of service in September of 1975. After his military career ended, he found he still had a love for the uniform, so he joined the police department. First in Groton Connecticut, and then continuing on to Oxford, MI where the family ended up moving. He continued working with law enforcement throughout his years even during his time with General Motors Security, when he finally retired and moved to the Upper Peninsula in 1991. James did many things in his life, including the rodeo, and car racing with trophies

he was beyond proud of. He made many friends along the way. But his biggest passion in his life ended up being snowmobiling. He started the Snomads Snofari Club in the early 80’s, was VP, and President of the Michigan Snowmobile Association, and then went on to the American Council of Snowmobile Associations where he also served as VP & president. He was always looking for ways to improve the sport and make it better and safer for generations to come. In September of 2013, James was inducted into the International Snowmobile Hall of Fame, an honor he always said humbled him beyond words to be recognized among the greats. He also loves writing articles for the Michigan Snowmobiler Magazine for many years and getting the truth out, and a few tall tales. He was active in the Alger County Sorva until he could no longer serve. To say he’s a legend in the snowmobile community would be an understatement. Another area dear to his heart was his Masonic family. James was a life member of the Oxford Lodge, even though he was unable to attend after moving. He and continued on page 20

A Different Kind of Off-Roading BY JIM DUKE CONTRIBUTING WRITER

Getting ready for the climb.

T

he majority of acquaintances in my little circle have the same opinion of what off-roading consists of, either an ATV or the more popular Side-by-Side UTV, and both used primarily on two-tracks and forest roads for recreation in the great outdoors during the warmer months. But there are a few that “think outside the box” so to speak, and these are the folks who will be featured in this discussion. The

most common name given to this particular group of motorized recreationalists is “Jeepsters”, that actually generalizes the group, and the majority of Jeep owners do not participate in the activities of “off-roading”. The sub-group that does, however, is widely recognized as Wrangler owners and will get muddy at the drop of a hat! That being said, playing in the mud is just one of the more popular activities these fun-loving individuals enjoy

because there’s a group within this group that regularly engage in a more dangerous activity, one known as “rock crawling”! It would be futile for most off-road jeeps to attempt such a precarious activity, at least without having some serious work done to the vehicle to “beef up” the suspension, add a much stronger skid plate, and make sure a roll cage is installed that can support the weight of the vehicle, if (more likely when} it fails to complete

the crawl and ends up on its top in a ravine. A close acquaintance that does this kind of activity on a fairly regular basis said anyone even contemplating activities had better have some good insurance and plenty of financial support. Having attended one or two of these events, I’ve noticed that there are any number of various makes & models of vehicles modified for the rigorous conditions they are likely to encounter, but the most popular vehicle at such venues is the Jeep. But as mentioned previously, don’t even think of taking one of the lot and expecting it to perform with any degree of success, and more likely expect to bring it back with some damage. I was told that most rock crawler enthusiasts have a repair facility where the vehicles, similar to race cars, are brought in after each event and gone over with a fine-toothed comb, where the slightest bend in a tie-rod or the lightest wobble in a wheel must be analyzed and defective parts replaced. They either do this work by themselves or, at the very least, have a seasoned mechanic on-hand to advise and assist. As popular as “rock-crawler” activities seem to be, there are few places that are actually designed and sculptured for such events. True, most state lands are open to all recreational activities including rock crawling but knowing where the terrain is most challenging or even available can be continued on page 24

a daunting task. The caveat here is to make sure you aren’t on private property, any restricted or wilderness designated areas. A search of the internet of locations where rock crawling is permitted didn’t turn up much, even though I’m told there are several venues throughout the state where that activity is permitted and even encouraged, just not well advertised beyond word of mouth from one enthusiast to another. I have it from a very reliable source that there is some really great locations on Drummond Island for rock crawling, and is one of the reasons an annual Jeep Jamboree is scheduled there. I’m also told that some of the recreational areas downstate have lots of areas where climbing is allowed but more with sand or dirt than rocks. The one place that welcomes rock crawlers with a monthly, and sometimes weekly, events is the Twisting Trails Off-Road Park located on the west side of the lower near Copemish, Michigan. This facility is designed with the rock crawlers as a priority. It encompasses around 400 acres of hills, mud, rocks, challenging trails, and much, much more. There is a fee for using this facility and daily hours of operation. The planned opening for Twisted Trails Off-Road Park is September 2nd. In summary, every recreational endeavor provides different levels, considering age, experience, and durability of both operator and machine. Whether it’s a passion for rock crawling, trail riding, mudding, snowmobiling, skiing, or simply observing, it is always recommended to do it at each individuals own capability, never exert oneself or the limitations of the machine beyond what they were designed, or prepared for, and engage in the activity safely and with proper caution. •

Just two and a half hours away from the Michigan border in Algoma, and north on highway 108, Elliot Lake appears like a rider’s oasis. To start, nearly 200 miles of OFATV insured trails are just begging to be explored. These trails extend through the extraordinary landscape of this unspoiled part of Northern Ontario and take you past racing rivers, ancient rock escarpments, and transition forests that offer more than just the

Whether you’re a seasoned rider or a newbie, you can enjoy them all as the trails are suited for riders of all skill levels. he Keweenaw Peninsula is adorned with snowmobile trails spanning from Copper Harbor to the Southern Keweenaw (Sokë) in towns like Mass City, Rockland and Twin Lakes. This network allows for travel through the Western Upper Peninsula and across the Wisconsin border by snowmobile. Crossing into Michigan unlocks more lake effect snow and hundreds of miles of groomed trails. You’ll find striking sights of Lake Superior and tall pines calling you north. With a solid sled network, you can leave your truck and trailer below the border and ride in. In the high terrain of Ontonagon and Houghton Counties the Superior Snowmobile Club grooms over 100 miles of trail taking you through some of the most rural and untouched land in the Midwest. This trail system also connects to Houghton via the Bill Nichols Trail, or Trail 3. Here, you’ll ride through the southernmost Keweenaw towns born during the Copper Country’s mining boom. Explore this below-the-Portage stretch and ride the Sokë trails to discover new parts of the Keweenaw. Take on the frozen forest and spend time around Greenland. Or, make the long haul north to Copper Harbor and Brockway Mountain Drive.

WHERE TO GO IN SOKË The Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park invites snowmobilers to its peak. Take Trail 11 from the south or come in from Silver City on Trail 1 to reach Lake of the Clouds. This dreamlike viewing plateau lifts you 1,000 feet above Lake Superior and gives you a bird’s eye view continued on page 36

Feel Mother Superior’s winds embrace you atop this icy peak. Snowmobile is the only way to reach it during winter, unless you’re looking for a long, chilly hike uphill. Photo taking is a must here. leads you right to a place like home called Rousseau Bar. It’s a convenient stop off Trail 12 east of Mass City. Owner Angie Foley says the place is vibrant in the winter especially during “Snowmobile Saturdays” when things get busy. Foley says Rousseau gets a lot of traffic from Wisconsin, Illinois and Ohio as well as folks riding within Michigan. She says the Rousseau is a must-stop, known for its “crooked floors” and it lets you leave your signature on

Snowmobile Experience

It’s just the sound of you and your sled in the Keweenaw SUPERIOR SNOWMOBILE CLUB

Foley’s final must-see: The Gorge. It’s by the Silver River Reserve south of Alston on Trail 12. Keep your eyes peeled for this outcropping with breathtaking views. It’s a feature of the Sturgeon River Gorge Wilderness Area which holds some of the Keweenaw’s wildest corridors. From the rim of the Gorge you can see thousands of acres of gargantuan old growth trees, streams and rocky formations. Backcountry snowshoers could use this spot as a break from snowmobiling if they’re looking for a new place to explore. The natural, wooded landscapes and frozen features will refresh your eyes and satisfy your urge to escape busy city life. If you’re looking to leave your truck and trailer below the border and ride into Michigan, there are park and rides from Hurley, Eagle River and Florence. If you’re going north or coming from Houghton, it’s about a 2-3 hour ride from the Portage Lake Lift Bridge to Mass City. It’s another 2-3 from Copper Harbor. With so many lodging options and restaurants along the way, it would be easy to make it an overnight trip. Or, a whole week’s vacation if you wanted to put some miles on your machine. Given the elevation and proximity to Lake Superior, fresh flakes are a given during winter months. Many of the towns will have something for you to stop and check out

To avoid confusing the closures, take only the Bill Nichols Trail, or Trail 3 between Mass City and Toivola. This will avoid any wrong turns. A small

section of Trail 13 is still open but only south out of Greenland and up the hill to Rockland. Superior Snowmobile Club President Brad Sturtevant says you’ll find a beautiful ride wherever you go in the Western U.P. “For people who don’t ride here,” said Sturtevant. “The spine of the Keweenaw, which runs from Copper

SPEND TIME IN GRAND MARAIS THIS WINTER!

vintage sled

1977 Skidoo RV BY BRIAN VOGT CONTRIBUTING WRITER

S

o, this is the story of how I got my 1977 Ski Doo 340 RV and what I had to do to restore the sled. At one of our club meetings at the Ogemaw Hills snowmobile Club in West Branch Michigan, I was talking to Don, and he said his son has an RV in a trailer at his place that he talked about getting rid of one day. He asked if I wanted to go look at it and I was

more than happy to. I always wanted a 79 Blizzard 7500, so I was willing to look at this sled. After seeing this sled, I decided that this was one that I wanted. So, I got his son’s number and gave him a call. We talked for a while, but I soon found out that he was not ready to let it go. He had plans on fixing it and racing the sled. I kept asking his dad year after year if he had done anything with it and the answer was always no. Then one day I was talking to Doug who heads up our vintage show and he told me that Don had contacted him, and his son continued on page 44

wanted to donate the sled to the club. Doug told him that it would only be fair to talk to me first since I have been wanting the sled for several years. I then contacted his son to see if I could make a deal to get the sled. After we talked for a while, a deal was struck. I was finally going to get the sled I wanted for several years. One Saturday after the club meeting, I went to pick up my sled. I took it to my buddy Chucks place as I was going to be going to a sled show the next day with him. We pulled it out of the trailer into the barn and started looking it over. It was a complete sled but needed a lot of attention. The belly pan was full of

leaves, the seat was torn, and it was filthy. As we started to clean out the leaves there was a mouse still in there that jumped out and ran off in the barn. Well, we got him that night on the trap. Now it was time to take it home to start the restoration. I started taking the sled apart. As you all know I was finding more that was wrong than I originally expected. The hood had some damage around the front where the hinges were, and the fiberglass belly pan had been hit on the bottom and broke out several pieces. Once the sled was stripped down, I focused my attention on the belly pan. I looked at some continued on page 46

other sleds to make sure I knew what I had to do to make it look good again. So, after grinding out the bad spots, I got out my fiberglass kit and started remaking the bottom of the pan. It took some time to recreate the original look but after a lot of sanding and molding of the fiberglass, I finally got it to look great again. Now on to the top edge of the pan where I also had to put some glass to make it look right. After I finished that I sanded the hood and filled the cracks in the front of the hood where the hinges are. The suspension was taken apart, cleaned, and put back together. Onto the big task of polishing the aluminum tunnel and bulkhead. What a job to polish this all out to make it shine again. I spent several days doing this to make sure that it looked like it was when it was new. I did a rebuild on the motor to make sure it was fresh and new when it went back in the sled. It received a fresh coat of paint on the hood and belly pan. The skies were also sandblasted, and they also received a fresh coat of paint. A new sticker kit was ordered along with

a new seat cover. There was a lot of striping that went on the hood, and it came in several strips. It took a long time to put the stickers on as they all had to be lined up evenly. A new windshield was put on the hood and now it was ready to be reassembled. The belly pan was held on by many large rivets that had to be put in one at a time. Then it was on to the suspension and track, skies and then flipped it over to start putting the motor in along with the handlebars, hood and the new seat. What a great sled to see but upon finishing the sled I found out that the guy I got it from had passed. It was sad to know that he didn’t get to see his sled redone. So, at the next meeting I took the sled to the club and revealed the sled to the family to see their son’s sled. It was a wonderful moment for them to see the sled all done in his honor. Then at our vintage show his dad rode the sled around the parking lot as we did to start the event ride. It was a proud moment to lead everyone on the ride for his son. This sled is dedicated to him and his family. •
