from the editor

As I write this month’s editor letter there is snow on the ground in lower Michigan, after quite a cold snap and a decent snowfall to start our winter season! Hope this weath er has you in the winter spirit. The Snowmobile USA Show (Snow Show) held in Novi, MI the first weekend of November was excellent this year. We had the pleasure of sharing our booth with Ryan Spencer #21 Cadarette Collision driver and Chris Reames from MIRA . Every young

person that wanted to check out the sled and get a picture with the victory flag – definitely got their chance. These guys love to share the sport and are all about promoting fun and adventure to the next generation. We had a great time talking with so many of our readers, former writers and contrib utors. What a privi lege it is to be a part of this sport. Thank you to each of you for taking the time to speak with us. Towards the end of the evening on Sat urday there was one twenty

something guy (so sorry I didn’t catch your name) that walked up. He had just moved to Michigan from Montana. He was asking how to find out about snow mobiling race events… We were thrilled. How often is it that a person can walk up at an event and instantly be connected with THE people that run the events that they are hoping to go to… So Scott and I introduced this young man to Chris Reames and Chris connected him with Ric Federau from the I-500. It was quite an amaz ing moment.

If you haven’t already done so – I hope you just made up your mind to join us next year on the first weekend of November, 2023 in Novi at the 31st annual Snowmobile USA Show… It’s well worth your time. If you have a ques tion, the folks you need to talk with are there. All you need to do is ask. And, of course all the gadgets, gear, clothing, snowmobiles, ac

cessories, trailers are there for you to look at, dream of, price out, perhaps pur chase…and it’s just good family fun.

As always at Michigan Snowmobiler and ORV, we hope this issue has our readers dreaming of Mich igan adventures! We look forward to seeing everyone at local events, chapter meetings and volunteer ing in support of Michigan Snowmobiling and ORVs. To find a local chapter in your area, visit the MISOR VA website. From the home page, scroll down to the map of Michigan with the nine different districts listed, then click on your district for a listing of clubs in that area.

Until our next issue, be safe, enjoy the trails and remember to keep our vet erans and first responders in your thoughts and prayers.

As alway, you can reach out to us at Michigan Snowmobiler at scottd@faragoassoc.com

Experience Gaylord is a winter wonderland just waiting for you to explore
Alpine High
our town

Gaylord, Michigan is known as the Alpine Village, and once you experience our dramatic elevation changes, you’ll understand why. Our inland sweet spot at 1,348 feet above sea level perches us right in the middle of the snowbelt, where we count on an average of 152 inches of snowfall each year. What does that mean for sled heads? More lake effect snow than anywhere else in the Lower Peninsula throughout the entire season.

You’ll find some of the best riding conditions in our entire state right in Gaylord. From December 1 through March 31, our trails are expertly groomed and maintained by skilled volunteers with the Gaylord Area Snowmobile Trails Council. The Gaylord Tourism Bureau staff is in daily contact with groomers for up-to-date trail conditions and riding reports, which are available 24-hours a day by calling 800-345-8621 or visiting www.gaylordmichigan.net.

Jerry Beattie, owner of the Sled Shed and long time Gaylord Area Snowmobile Trails Council member, stated, “Our club grooms more miles than any other in the Lower Peninsula year over year. We have more snow than most areas and high demand for grooming due to the number of sleds riding our trails daily. We’re lucky to have such a dedicated group of volunteers working behind the scenes with the Trails Council and running our groomers.”

Like Beattie, the Gaylord community embraces winter and its adrenaline-seeking patrons. Our dealerships represent all 4 major brands of sleds and have the latest technology and gear you’re looking for. You’ll have no trouble finding aftermarket parts for repairs, along with knowledgeable service departments ready to get you back on the trail. The best part? Most of our snowmobile-related businesses are conveniently located near one another, including The Sled Shed, Extreme Powersports and Mega

And don’t Let’s not forget about our friends in the untamed forests surrounding Frederic and Grayling to the south. Newbies may find this all a little overwhelming, but don’t worry, there are free Snowmobile Trail Maps available through the Tourism Bureau that will get you where you need to go!

If we’re going to pick favorite routes (and you know we are), we’ve got a few to share. One can’t miss option is the North Branch, a seemingly

never-ending story of snowmobiling, funneling riders south to Kalkaska’s well-known Blue Bear Trail, west to the heavily forested Jordan Valley and east to Lewiston’s Lovells Trail. To top it off, this sprawling route has multiple connector trails and access to free-range National Guard land that is open to riding.

While the North Branch may seem like every snowmobiler’s dream come true, Gaylord has even more to give. Hit up the North Central State Trail, a former railroad corridor that serves as a popular bike path during the warmer seasons. Ride for 73 glorious,

The story behind the hottest aftermarket product in snowmobiling: “Helmet Safety Lights”
in
Safety A
IDEA

business spotlight

Let’s face it, as snowmobilers we are passionate about our sport and are always on the lookout for the next best thing to come along. Whether it’s the latest in engine or suspension technology from the manufacturers, or just simple aftermarket products that help make snowmobiling more convenient, we all love the latest innovations.

This season I bought a pair of heated gloves and lace free BOA style boots. Both of these items for me will solve two of my biggest frustrations. First, keeping my hands from getting cold when I am not riding my sled, and second, as my beer belly always seems to get in the way, eliminating the tugging and bending of tying the laces on my old boots.

As the founder of BITEHARDER Products our current logo tag line says it all; “SHARPER, SAFER, SMARTER SNOWMOBILING”. Our company takes pride in conceiving, developing, and bringing to market products that allow snowmobilers to get the most performance, and the safest ride every time you head out on the trail.

“Their helmet safety lights are no gimmick. They are from the highest quality components available, for years of trouble-free operation. The lights come in five different colors – red, amber, blue, green and pink, allowing users to color coordinate with their equipment. They can help identify other members of your group/family who are using the same color lights.” — Intrepid Snowmobiler

Located in Laconia New Hampshire, we always attend and promote our products at the New Hampshire “Race Into Winter” event (locally known as The Grass Drags). It is the east coast’s version of Hay Days that brings in close to 45,000 people over the three-day event.

“I wish everybody had one of these on their helmet. It’s much easier to see than a tail light, helmet or jacket when following somebody.” — Lance Meyer, Snow Goer Magazine

Each year at the Grass Drags I would notice a small booth with a product being sold as the “Snow Dust Buster Helmet Light”. Lenn Johnson, a local electrician, avid snowmobiler, and Polaris Ambassador, took “off the shelf components” and fabricated an LED light that mounted to the back of your helmet, to help other snowmobilers see you in the snow dust that we are all familiar with.

“After affixing one of the snowmobile helmet safety lights to my helmet and utilizing it last winter, I liked it a lot. After lending my helmet to somebody else and

following that helmet through snow dust both day and night, I grew to love it! I wish I could mandate it for everybody I ride with.” — Lance Meyer, Snow Goer Magazine

As crude as it was, it did work. The initial concept was designed to allow passing snowmobilers the ability to see the high mounted light (over your snow mobile’s snow-covered tail light), avoiding a potential accident.

“I was skeptical at 1st. Ordered 4 different colors for myself, my husband, and our 2 teenage kids. We tried them out on the trails in Michigan in Feb of 2021. Have to say that my family and I were very impressed! It makes it much easier to keep track of everyone in the group, especially with the different colors. My kids love them because no matter how far ahead my husband gets from us, we can still see him. I was impressed how visible they were in daylight. The weekend we rode was very cold and our snowmobiles kicked up a lot of snow dust. The helmet light was easily visible and I never lost track of my husband. Everywhere we stopped, people came up and asked about the lights. Not skeptical anymore!” – Kim Johansen

From my perspective this was a safety product that fit perfectly into BITEHARD ERS’s product offerings. Ultimately, it was agreed that BITEHARDER and Lenn would work together to bring the product to a national level, rebranded as BITE HARDER’s Helmet Safety Light.

“Love the lights, we have everyone in our group running them. Huge safety deal!” - Glen Sabatine

We immediately went to work rede signing the product which was released during the 2020/2021 season. Future improvements were also made for the 2021/2022 season and the product was re-released as our generation 5 helmet safety light. With its simple low-profile design, it mounts to any helmet within minutes and gets its power through a splitter block, using your heated visor’s cord, that not only sends power to your heated visor but to the helmet safety light as well. Riders who do not use heated visors can also use the product.

“One of the guys in our group bought one of these last year. I must admit, I picked on him. Then we rode. What an amazing difference! It was not only nice to keep track of your group out on lakes, but the visibility through snow dust when you can’t really see the taillight is where it really shined. Great product and great quality. Almost everyone in our group has one now.”
— Sean T.

Since that time, and to our amaze ment, our helmet safety light has grown in sales over 5000%. With 6 color offerings (red, green, blue, amber, pink and our newest color aqua), our helmet safety light has not only been a visible marker for single riders who are being passed by other riders, but has grown into and essential piece of equipment for groups of 2 to 20 or more riders that want the ability to stay together on the trail. Families, ride groups, snowmobile clubs, and tour groups find them invaluable in taking the stress out of staying together and being able to see the rider you are following at all times regardless of the snow dust, snow storms, during the day or especially at night.

“The lights – just wow! Was a bit skeptical at first when I saw them, they are REALLY bright. In snow dust you couldn’t see tail lights but you sure could see them! Way brighter than taillights, even when braking. A few of the guys had oxygen helmets

– couldn’t see their lights but sure saw these! Great product. Highly recommend. Will be putting these in family members stocking at Christ mas for sure!” – Kathleen Hedley, Intrepid Snowmobiler crew rider

Every now and then, a simple after market snowmobile product comes along that significantly helps make the sport of snowmobiling better. Let our snowmobile helmet safety light

make a believer of out of you like the thousands of other riders who are using this product.

Seven Days In A snowmobiling adventure

ALGOMA

Every adventure has to start somewhere, and that somewhere often is months before we push the go button. Our seven-day plan to explore Ontario’s Algoma Country by snowmobile is no exception. With the early March date set well in advance, it was nail-biting time watching the weather toy with the conditions.

Happy to say, as we pull the sleds from the trailer, that the Lake Superior lake effect snow machine has done its job delivering the usual 12 feet of snow on Algoma’s 2,000 miles of groomed snowmobile trails. And the weather forecast is looking stellar.

Just as a plan has to start somewhere, the actual ride needs a home base, and for us, it’s the Fairfield by Marriott in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. A long-time favourite with snowmobil ers, it checks all the boxes. Easy access from the U.S.A., around 5 hours north of Detroit along I-75. In Canada, accessible via Trans Canada Highway 17 from east or west. Parking for truck and trailer, check. Comfortable rooms, nearby eateries, nightlife, gas stations, check, check, check. But most importantly, the trail head to some of the best snowmobiling trails anywhere at its doorstep.

DAY ONE AND TWOTHE 395-MILE NORTH SHORE LOOP

Quickly the city limits fade behind us as

the trail narrows and twist and turn through a snow-blanketed forest. We don’t see anybody for hours; it’s as if we have the whole place to ourselves. At Black Creek Outfitters, we refuel the body with a hot lunch, top up the gas tanks, and point the sleds east toward Elliot Lake. Along the way, some impressive ups and downs make for spectacular views. We drop our bags at Dunlop Lake Lodge just in time for dinner and the evening’s live musical entertainment.

Welcome to the north, where everyone wears many hats; last night’s lead singer is now the

breakfast cook. We make our way south towards the North Channel of Lake Huron before turning west. On paper, the day’s ride looks easily achievable, but with views of the North Channel to distract, side trails to local communities and a noticeable lack of straightaways, time ticks away. We stop for a late lunch at the famous Bobbers Restaurant in Bruce Mines, then cross over to St. Joseph Island for a look around. At one point, the end was in sight, as we could see the hotel, probably 15 minutes away as the crow flew, but the trail had a different plan. A cou ple of hours later, we pull in in the dark with low-fuel lights glowing.

DAY THREEWE EMBRACE PLAN B

The original plan was to head out from Sault Ste. Marie on the All The Way There Tour, but that option was no longer avail able. After breakfast, we hop on the sleds and tick off the 120-mile Soo Highlands Loop through the old-growth forests of the Soo Highlands. Then load the sleds for the two-hour drive to Wawa.

The Wawa Motor Inn, our home for the night, is another snowmobiling favourite where sleds often outnumber cars in the parking lot. I will say, I am a motel fan. I love having our sleds parked outside the door and a chance to mingle with fellow travellers as we prep for another day out and about.

DAY FOUR TO SEVENDESTINATION HEARST

At around 251 miles between Wawa and Hearst, it’s a day ride for those that enjoy ticking off miles on their odometer. We, however, are here for a good time, not a fast time. A late start in Wawa and a lengthy lunch at the Sports Bar & Grill in Dubreuilville, then on to Hornepayne, where we top the day with a tasty burg er at the Hungry Bear Pub & Diner and settle in for the night at Agich’s Riverside Cabins. Hard to believe, but I don’t recall seeing any other sleds on the trail all day; amazing.

Day four plans are to get to Hearst and explore some of the local trails, but by

the time we pull into town, a snowstorm is brewing. Applying our good time, not a fast time, approach to the trip, we park the sleds in the heated garage at Companion Hotel-Motel and pull up a barstool at the on-site sports bar.

On day five, the fresh snow overnight makes for fun riding and challenging navi gation. We are back at the Hungry Bear Pub & Diner in Hornepayne, this time for lunch, then on to Dubreuilville – Magpie Relay Motel. Owned and operated by snowmo bilers, you will find a heated garage for your sled and racks in the rooms to hang and dry your gear and helmet. We spend the evening reliving our adventure so far over pizza and beer in the motel’s social gather ing spot, aka the Man Cave.

Day seven, the ride is not over until it’s over as we set first tracks in fresh snow on a silky-smooth trail under sunshine and blue sky, a perfect ending to a fantastic adventure.

2023 SEASON UPDATE

According to the latest information, Halfway Haven will not be open this season for fuel, food, or accommodations. However, the snowmobile clubs will be grooming the trail, and it will be open. The ride between Sault Ste Marie and Wawa or Sault Ste Marie and Chapleau is long, and carrying extra fuel is strongly advised. •

My father and uncle. They started racing in the late 1960’s. The only race my Dad missed was the day I was born.

When did you start racing and what is your proudest achievement so far on the track?

1996. The Michigan Cat 500, the first Enduro race that I won with my own race team.

Who got you into snowmobiling and when; what was their influence in your regard to the sport?

I went to a couple MIRA races in 2005 and really enjoyed them. In 2009 I went to a few more rac es and was working with Brent Vermeersch and Ryan Kohl on their race team. I was mainly assisting

Kevin Vermeersch

Who got you into snowmobiling and when; what was their influence in your regard to the sport?

My family has raced since the late 1960’s. Dad, uncle, cousins and brothers. So, I’ve been around it my whole life. But I would say if it wasn’t for my brothers, Brent and Kurt, I might not be racing.

When did you start racing and what is your proudest achievement so far on the track?

My proudest moment has to be a second place finish at Soo, but also finishing each race is some thing to be proud of. I know winning is the ultimate goal, and I want to win each race I’m in, but I also know how much hard work goes into getting ready for each race.

What is your career goal? I’d like to win an Enduro race and points championship.

How did you become part of this racing team?

Charlie Wiltse and Brent Vermeersch had established the team and I was at a race helping out. They needed someone to race a sled so I jumped on and haven’t stopped. Now the race shop is at my house and my part has grown into being co-owner of the team. We have a great group of guys that race and work on sleds and our families give us great support as well.

financially but I loved everything about the sport. This relation ship stirred a conversation with Kurt Vermeersch and myself one night in Oscoda during the Lincoln race weekend. WV was formed that summer and we were racing in MIRA for the 2010 season.

I raced for the first three sea sons. I had a few good spriny finishes and a couple good semi-pro endure runs, but I didn’t like to use the brakes and ended up crashing quite a bit. This is when I felt my strength would be better trying to build the race team and also be a leader on the MIRA administra tive side and also during race operations.

What is your career goal?

Career goal is to win a MIRA Pro Enduro points champion ship and a I-500 win.

How did you become part of this racing team?

Driving factors are I love snow mobile racing. I love the inten sity of competition on these fierce machines on a complete ice oval and great people in our racing world. We also knew we could create a team of awe some racers, mechanics, and support staff (wives, girlfriends, teammembers children) that are loyal to WV and all work hard for the team.

What is your career goal?

Points championship and I-500 win.

How did you become part of this racing team?

Family and friends, wives, girlfriends, kids, and the great people that are involved. It’s a family tradition and I couldn’t imagine not being at the races.

There are just so many aspects to this world class event that go beyond simple recognition of the sport and style of racing.  I’m going to speak about a couple that are some of the driving forces behind building excitement. Let me start by sharing some of the things people talk to us about who show sincere interest in the sport of oval ice racing and all the fun that goes with it.  Historically the I-500 has been around for 54 years. Yet we find that many people throughout the state do not know much about it.

This past November, we attended the Novi snowmobile Expo in Novi, MI.  It’s one of the nation’s largest snowmobile trade shows,  with thousands of people attending. I was amazed at how many people didn’t know much about The SOO I-500 snowmobile race. Ob viously over the course of 54 years people were missing out on something special, basically because they weren’t educated about it and all it has to offer.

I decided to think of a question that I could ask people that would gener ate a response that might hopefully entice them to come to the I-500. I simply started asking people who were attending the

show. The following question......“ What would it take to get you to attend the I-500.”

The responses were ex tremely diversified. People responded with questions about lodging, dinner locations, fuel cost, what other things are there to do within the community? Are there places at the race to keep warm?  Is the venue close to riding trails? Can we park our sleds there?  There were so many questions about the event, that people were not aware of. Even though for 54 years the I-500 has been and still is marketed and advertised throughout the whole state of Michigan and beyond.

Jim Cantore of The Weather Channel network, who visited the I-500 a couple years ago to do live coverage, made the comment..... “ This even is one of professional racing’s best kept secrets.  Someday some major network is gonna find this and they are going to embark on something new that is gonna excite the world.”  His comment is simply conducive to the way we feel as pro moters of this world class event. We’re just anxious to share I-500 information with as many people as possible.  It’s very com mon among us humans to want to share information about our passion. Once we started speaking about the I500 to others we found out how willing they were to listen.  The end result of sharing our infor mation usually provides answers to the simple question “ what’s it going continued on page XX

Another interesting aspect of the I-500 boils down to a couple simple terms felt by every single person who is attached to the SOO I-500 be it a spectator, driv er, volunteer worker, team owner, team members, OEM’s, I-500 directors and more.... such ter minology as “Anticipation” & “ Excitement” to name a couple. As we enter into Decem ber we’re only weeks away from the event.  “Anticipation” commences to set in with our track building crews, the whole shape of the I-500 is being formed by the hundreds of volunteers it takes to make this event possi ble. The vendors start “anticipating”, vol unteers come out of the woodwork to start working on helping the event come togeth er. Travelers are visiting “Welcome Centers” and picking up printed materials about the I-500.  Race teams start meeting more often to prepare for the big one. More and more the anticipation hits every single aspect of this event as we get closer to the excitement becoming a reality. So many aspects that anticipation touches and most people of the general public never give much thought to. Safety of everyone attending the week long series of events, medical assistance, numbers of police agencies, power compa ny, Insurance covering everything, parking, officiating the events all week. So many officials from the U.S. and Canada.

Timing staff, Track building crews, vehicle maintenance people, announcing and media relations and more. EVERY aspect of this week-long series of events is preceded by “anticipation”. It’s the world’s ONLY professional racing event that is totally operated and generated by volunteers, totally.... That’s unheard of in any professional sport. It’s a classic story in and of itself.     Once anticipation is experienced and we move closer to the week’s events, every

one considering the I-500 is anticipating “Excitement”.  This is what it’s all about to hundreds of fans and people involved. This event and all it has to offer is extremely “exciting.”

The planning for those who will attend the I-500 starts the Sunday after the race is over. People are taking our suggestions related to being prepared if you’re consid ering attending the SOO I-500 and are following our lead. Again... building excite ment and memories that’ll last a lifetime.

Drivers, team members and their respective support ers are all anticipating the ex citement they’ll be enjoying throughout race week. You cannot exaggerate “Anticipa tion” or “Excitement” related to attending the SOO I-500. The simple challenges of planning and attending are supported by purpose. Just being at the world’s oldest, longest, fastest and toughest snowmobile endurance race, bar none.

Earlier in this article I men tioned it’s almost December and that’s when things start to really speed UP in prepa ration for attending the 2023 International 500 race week of events. I-500 Directors

and officials meet by-weekly in December and then week ly throughout the month of January.  Remember.....  One of the most asked questions about the SOO I-500 is.... “ When is it each year?” The SOO I-500 has historically hosted the granddaddy of all snowmobile races, FIRST SATURDAY in February each year. That will NEVER change it’s a date that peo ple can count on, and make plans around knowing that it’s going to be held the first Saturday of every February every year.

Over the past few months Snowmobile / ORV has featured several articles about the I-500 and all that goes on behind the scenes. We tried to share information about various aspects of the I-500 that we think you might find interesting about this event. And we hope that our information will trigger your interest to the point that when you’re asked “what’s it going to take to get you to the I-500?”  You’ll simply respond by saying “we just have to pull some friends together and make going to the I-500 part of our snow mobile bucket list”.

Ya know.... There are so many cool things about the

Snowmobile enthusiast, race fans, sled heads and those who like winter sports in general can enjoy attend ing I-500 race week. There’s virtually something for everyone of all ages. It’s a world class event that will build individual and family memories that will last a lifetime. The SOO i-500 has become a winter sports enthusiast vacation desti nation.

It’s December, folks the month whereby we enjoy giving and sharing in cele bration as we move towards another new year. It’s a time when we enter into our final approach for hosting one of the world’s most spectacu lar snowmobile events. With

only a handful of Saturdays left before the next race we’re recognizing we’re entering our final approach for hosting the 54th running of the famous SOO I-500.  It’s time to push the throttle down a little harder and to crank up the speed with regards to planning and get ting your I-500 trip in order to attend the 54th running of this wonderful event. It’s time to pull your people together, confirming your lodging is in order and your plans are set for attending the 2023 I-500 race week.  It’s what we do to enhance “anticipation” towards building “excitement “  for YOU to have one of the best snowmobile times of your life.  We’re certain once you’ve been to an I-500 race, you’ll be back........

inter brings the snow to northern Michigan, and there is plenty to do during the winter months in the Houghton Lake area. Whether you enjoy snowmobiling, cross-country or downhill skiing, snowshoeing or ice fishing, ice skating or winter festivals, Roscommon County is a winter wonderland.

With roughly 200 miles of groomed snowmobile trails in Roscommon County, Houghton Lake is the perfect stop for the snowmobile enthusiast. With northern Michigan’s extensive trail system, abundant snow and exciting terrain, it is the perfect setting for a snowmobiling adventure for all

ages. The Houghton Lake area also offers plenty of lodging and snowmobiling friendly pubs and taverns and terrific dining as well.

Houghton Lake is the perfect base for accessing Michigan’s 6100 miles of snowmobile trails. Maps are available at various locations throughout the county, including Houghton Lake Tourism Bureau, and the Chamber of Commerce offices in Houghton Lake and Roscommon.

Roscommon County is also the home to a number of winter festivals, as well as ORV and snowmobile events.

TIP-UP-TOWN U.S.A. It’s a tradition each January to head to

Houghton Lake for Tip-Up-Town USA, Michigan’s longest running and largest winter festival. This winter’s event will be held Jan. 21-22 and 28, 2023.

Named after the tip-up, an ice fish ing device used to signal when a fish has taken the bait, and the ice shanty towns that pop up when the fish are biting, Tip Up Town was established in 1951.

According to a 1952 newspaper, “for the festival last weekend they had roads scraped through the snow on the lake to make “streets” for Tipup Town (sic). It has been suggested that routes of travel should be maintained all winter long to fishing spots on the lake.

“…TUT is such a bustling and

buoyant community that it is hard to realize it simply doesn’t exist during most of the year.”

What began as a fish ing contest, has become much more. The festival expanded and through the years was moved off the ice onto the southern DNR boat launch, off of M-55 at 2439 Town Line Road. Plans for 2023 include carnival rides, games on the stage and in the village, food ven dors, live music, family fun tent, and a bull riding rodeo. On the ice, in addition to the fishing

contest, will be the polar bear dip, Side by Side (SXS) races and snowmobile drag races.

The adult beverage tent is two blocks from the festival site, and opens on Friday nights.

Free parking is avail able at the High School and library with free shuttle service to and from Tip Up Town. A $10 Badge is required to enter the festival grounds.

Saturday, Jan. 21, 2023, the SXS Grudge races / test & tune event will be held on the ice near the Tip-Up-Town

60 Years of History

The World Championship Snowmobile Derby will cel ebrate 60 years of historic snowmobile racing with 10 days of exciting action in Eagle River Jan. 12-22.

The event is billed as the “Indianapolis 500 of Snow mobile Racing,” drawing the best ice oval racers from the United States, Canada (now open to cross the border this year) and Europe to Eagle River.

“The 60th Derby will feature many new and exciting ac tivities to highlight this year’s events,” said Tom Anderson, CEO of the group that purchased the track, all its facili ties and properties in 2018. The property has since been rebranded as the World Championship Derby Complex (WCDC) to take advantage of all the facility has to offer for a year-round operation.

The Derby Complex has already hosted several wed dings, USA Hockey Pond Hockey, muskie tournament banquets, Relay For Life cancer fundraiser, a Mud, Sweat and Cheers race, Rotary Club Antique Show, dealer meet ings, swap meets, rock concert and other local events.

LONG HISTORY

The World Championship Snowmobile Derby is the oldest and grandest event in snowmobile racing, dating back to the first race on Dollar Lake in 1964. The race grew in the late 1960s and ‘70s under the direction of the Eagle River Lions Club, which moved the race to a track between Highway 45 and Pleasure Island Road. Dozens of snow mobile manufacturers helped draw thousands of people to the event.

The Derby Track then was purchased by the Decker family, who built viewing suites, an expo hall, food service stands and a host of other infrastructure facilities.

Today, the facility boasts 30-plus acres of grounds, a famed half-mile banked oval race track that was totally reshaped this summer, a separate youth race track, 15 corporate inside heated viewing suites, a 10,000-squarefoot expo hall, heated and cooled enclosed viewing stands on the home straight, full food and liquor licenses with several bars, and 50-plus flat-screen TVs to bring the

HIGHLIGHTS

Under the direction of the new owners, the festive 10day Jan.12-22 show will include world-class ice oval racing beginning the first weekend with Vintage rac es. By the end of the second weekend, fans will have witnessed professional oval racing, Kitty Cat racing, motorcycle racing, a 100 lap enduro and two underthe-lights shows billed as Friday Night Lightning and Friday Night Thunder. The second weekend will include Badger State Winter Games opening ceremonies complete with the lighting of the BSG Olympic style cauldron culminating a two-day snowmobile ride from Wausau carrying the torch.

Last year, the new FIII World Championship Class was won by Jay Mittlesteadt of Reedsburg, WI taking home a Top Ten ring, a coveted Eagle River WC trophy and $5,000 in cash. This year look for 35-40 entries vying for the WC title as this FIII class brings new names and color to the top class. Arctic Cat, Yama ha, Ski Doo and Polaris are offering contingency monies in the amounts of $7,000, 5,000 and 3,000 for first, second and third place finishes by their brand. It will be the first time in over 20 years that all four brands will be competing for the WC title.

“The top 10 field is so incredibly competitive that it is impossible to predict who might emerge as the new World Champion,” said Craig Marchbank, Owner and Race Direc tor, who brings a long and highly suc cessful career of racing experience to

the new owner group.

“It could be one of the racers who made it to the final last year taking home the World Championship,” said Marchbank. “But then, we also saw several new, young faces on the starting line last year. So, it could just as well be any one of them as we expect upwards of 35-40 FIII entries in this new WC class.  It all adds up to great racing action on the famed Derby oval.”

This summer saw the one-half mile oval totally reworked and updated. GPS systems guided the dozers, loaders and grading machines to produce a perfect track surface ready for icing and racing.

VINTAGE STARTS FIRST

The 2022 event will actually be a 10-day show that opens Jan. 12 with Vintage racing, culminating with the Vintage World Championship Sun day, Jan. 15. Promoters are calling it “Snowmobile Week at the World Championship Derby Complex.”

“What started out to be only a couple of Vintage races on Derby Weekend 22 years ago quickly grew into a separate and complete Vintage weekend of racing action that gets a green flag to open the 10 days of exciting racing action on Thursday this year,” said Marchbank. “Vin tage entries and fan popularity have grown so large that Vintage racing now claims its own four-day event. We are expecting upwards of 900plus entries,” said Dan Peck, General Manager.

“The vintage machines of today are meticulously restored, engines are high-tech tuned and very reliable,” said Marchbank. “The competition is highly reminiscent of the good old days. We expect to see a very colorful showing of many brands of sleds on the track, including Arctic Cat, Ski-Doo, Polaris, Yamaha, SnoJet, John Deere, Rupp, Mercury and many more.” They will be competing for over $15,000 in added purse

The Vintage World Championship will open Thursday night on January 12th as well as racing under the lights for a spectacular Friday Night Lightning show on the13th. Then on Sunday, January 15th, fans will see more finals, reaching an exciting conclu sion to the Vintage weekend with the super-fast Vintage World Champion ship Snowmobile Derby title race in the Super Mod 440 Class at 3 p.m. Matt Goede, a perennial favorite, will be there to defend his WC title won last year aboard his exceptionally fast Polaris leafer.

THE BIG SHOW

But the event that puts Eagle River on the world map starts Thursday, Jan. 19, with all-day practice ses sions for oval racers in dozens of classes, including Kitty Cats, Juniors, Amateurs and Pro Ovals. Admission is free on Thursday.

“It is a great opportunity for fans to observe their favorite racers in action and to see who might be emerg ing as a strong competitor in each class,” said Marchbank.

Friday will be a full day of qualifi

cation racing in Oval classes. Then on Friday night, fans will once again pack the Derby Complex grounds for the most exciting and highly popular event — the Friday Night Thunder show.

“This is absolutely the finest and most entertaining show in snowmobile racing as the under-the-lights show features races in oval classes, juniors, motorcycles and side-byside racing,” said Dan Peck, General Manager. “We will rock the night with all kinds of ‘thunder’ sounds of racing and excitement, showcasing the best snowmobile racing action in the world.”

The top World Championship qualifiers go head-to-head under the lights to determine who will sit on the pole in Sunday’s championship race. This gives fans a heads-up on who is fastest, who has the handling and who could be the new 2023 World Champion.

“We’re going to take the top 16 qualifiers, run two heat races with eight machines in each and pull five racers from each heat for the final,” said Marchbank. “The winner is automatically qualified in the top 10 and will sit on the pole position for

the final. The winner won’t have to duel it out in qualifications Saturday afternoon.”

Saturday morning will bring more qualifying in Oval classes. As in the past, Saturday afternoon will include qualifying the top 10 finalists for Sun day’s World Championship event.

Sunday, billed as “Championship Day,” means finals in the most competitive Oval classes as thousands of spectators surrounding the track watch and cheer for their favorites.

The World Championship lastchance qualifier will be held early Sunday afternoon for the two backrow spots on the starting line for the 60th running of the World Championship, which will run promptly at 3 p.m.

After earning the checkered victory flag, the new World Champion will be honored in the newly created Ultimax Winner’s Circle in front of thousands of race fans. The SnowGoer Cup, inscribed with the names of all past WC winners, will be hoisted in victory for the Derby photographers. “The World Championship race is the single most important snowmobile race of the year for the racers,” said Anderson. “To win the World Cham-

LAP PRO ENDURE

But the championship racing isn’t finished. Immediately following the Derby WC festivities, the track will see over 30 driv ers competing in the 100 Lap WC Pro Enduro. It’s a long race for the Enduro drivers, most of whom are racers from the Michigan International Racing As sociation (MIRA) who are starting their 2023 season at the Derby Complex.

“They put on a great show last year and we are thrilled to have them back for this year,” said March bank. “Both the drivers and the sleds take a beat ing in this grueling race. Thirty-plus sleds all racing at once create nonstop racing action.”

WORLD SERIES WEEKEND

Then, Feb. 24-26 will see the return of the World Series of Snowmobile Racing featuring both vin tage, late model and en duro sleds in competition starting Friday evening Feb 24th, featuring US SA’s late model classes. Then on Saturday we will run both USSA and the vintage sleds from PVA to showcase both eras of sleds. Sunday is anoth er “BLAST” day with a mixture of PVR, MIRA and BEVRA classes. It’s an event for fans to see both vintage and late models in one weekend.

“We have combined Pro Vintage Racing (PVR), United States Snowmo bile Association (USSA), Michigan International Racing Association (MIRA) and Big Extreme Vintage Racing Association (BEV RA) into one very exciting

Our dining group was well impressed with how the tables were set up as the double tables with chairs all the way around them aloud for communication without being limited to just talking to a couple of people. Our group included Randy Smith, Jamie Bishop as well as Dan and Robin Taylor and Phil and Cheryl Alvesteffer. And of course our favorite girl Carla Buchan out on an evening dinner with us, since Tom was gone trout fishing. It was truly a great evening of food and drink along with some great fellowship with family and friends.
