W
ith Thanksgiving and Christmas just around the corner I started thinking in two completely different ways. One, I’m thankful for so many things related to Snowmobiling and ORV so here’s a few notes of thanks: 1. The engineers that create amazing new features year after year for all our tow vehicles and the toys they pull. Next time you have a few minutes, just take a moment to hear the smooth, intense power in our sleds and trucks… pretty marvelous. 2. The Snow Show in Novi, the Vintage Sled swap meet in Auto City (and Marion???). We’re already planning for next year… can’t wait. So many opportunities to
meet and talk in person and gain new insights for the next ride. 3. The many, local organizers that put on incredible events from the Saints of St. Charles to the I-500 in Sault Ste Marie. Hope you have 3, 4 or more plans in place to get out and enjoy our local communities. 4. Places and people like Charlie and Marilyn at the Michigan Snowmobile museum. Friendly people with a passion for the history of our sport. The musuem gives us an opportunity to step back in time and see all that has been accomplished all while giving us a great place to gather to support our favorite sport. 5. First responders. Hard to be healthy enough or safe enough to enjoy our sport without this band
of folks. My hometown, just like many others in Michigan, is protected by Volunteer Firefighters. Let’s hope none of us find ourselves in need of their service on the trail, at the cabin or home this year. But, I’m awfully thankful, they are around – just in case. So after being thankful, I started dreaming of which sled I’d like to ride this winter. There’s everything from vintage to the latest and greatest. I always catch myself being nostalgic for my first sled. A 1996 Polaris Indy 500. Snappy, fast, sleek and just right for someone without a bunch of upper body strength. This winter however, there’s a good chance I’ll be lucky enough to borrow my brother’s sled. Like many folks this last year, we haven’t had the greatest of luck finding a used sled to
fit our needs at a price we like. Lots of competition among the buyers on places like Marketplace. So if you have a used sled you don’t use much, this might be the year to get the best price. Food for thought. After Santa has taken care of the dream sled, or a dream borrowed sled is in the trailer – I start dreaming of the places to go. On the bucket list is Mackinac Island via the snow bridge, a ride along the shores of Lake Superior, a ride with my cousins in Grayling, and a ride with family and friends from St. Charles to Bay City. Hope Santa and friends help our fellow sledders with gift cards from our local businesses and everyone gets out and has a chance to ride one of your own bucket list trips. fter being cancelled last year due to coronavirus concerns, the largest snowmobile trade show in the Midwest opened it’s doors promptly at 5:00pm (EST) on Friday 5 November 2021 at the Suburban Showplace in Novi, Michigan, and although only slightly compressed from those in years past, enthusiasts were lined up early in anticipation, anxious to see what’s new in the wonderful world of snowmobiling. I say the show was slightly compressed, not because of attendance which, by the way, was as strong as ever, but due to a slight decrease in vendor

participation. Why?? Those I’ve been able to reach that normally were present at previous shows have said it was due to lack of product to sell or display and no other reason. In fact, I did see some of my dealer
acquaintances in the crowd during Saturday’s opening and had a chance to chat a bit about inventory shortfalls, not only for snowmobiles and equipment but for apparel and accessories as well.

For those vendors that did participate, most had after-market products and safety equipment that doesn’t go out of style year by year, and it’s always great to have the factory reps on hand to discuss the technological advances. I had occasion to do just that with Mr. Ron Pattyn, owner of Stud-Boy traction products and was amazed at how far that industry has come over the years, remembering the cleated tracks and “star cleats” from back in the good old days to the newest in carbide-tipped studs and shaper bars in use on today’s sleds. The folks at the Amsoil

booth, although always a busy place, took time to explain the newest innovations in synthetic oil products and how best to protect the newer high-performance sleds. It’s always great to look over the vintage and antique snowmobiles on display too, and take a walk down memory lane, at least for those of us that have been involved in snowmobiling from days long past. I enjoyed a few minutes with Charlie & Marilyn Vallier at the Top of the Lake Snowmobile Museum booth, looked over the wide variety of items they always have for the antique sled enthusiasts, and commented on their recent induction into the International Snowmobile Hall of Fame. In fact, throughout the three-day show, there were several ISHOF inductees in attendance, and on Sunday six of us got together for a quick photo-op. The Snomads Snofari Club did another outstanding job of hosting the Snowmobile Safety Course and certified about forty students. The course is
sponsored by the Department of Natural Resources and all young riders ages 12 to 17 must complete the course prior to being legal for solo operation of a snowmobile. As part of the program Christine Jourdan, Executive Director of the American Council of Snowmobile Associations administered the International Snowmobile Manufacturers Association’s “Take the Pledge Campaign” pledge to the group. Briefly, in four parts, those taking the pledge 1) promises to ride off-trail only where it’s legal and accepted; 2) to check before going off-trail if unsure; 3) to protect access for future generations by doing the right thing; and 4) to protect access by encouraging riding companions to take the pledge also. As I visited the several booths and vendors at this year’s show, it was gratifying to see more clubs present as well as several Chambers of Commerce, Visitors Bureaus, Resorts & Lodging facilities from both Michigan and our neighboring states but at the same

Grand Marais Harbor of Refuge Turned Snowmobiler’s Dream BY KIM KISNER CONTRIBUTING WRITER
Grand Marais was named by French voyagers in the 1600s and translates roughly to “Great Pond, Used as a Harbor of Refuge” and was justly named, as it was the only lifeline a sailor had along the dangerous shipwreck coast of Lake Superior. Located in Alger County, on the south shore at the eastern gateway to Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, it is still the only Harbor of

Refuge between Marquette and Sault St. Marie. Albeit small, with a population of just 300, Grand Marais’ offerings are massive for anyone who enjoys outdoor sports and unspoiled nature. Beyond the endless snowmobiling opportunities, Grand Marais also offers cozy and luxury lodging, eclectic dining, and the very best of winter.

ituated on several of the most pristine DNR Snowmobile trails in the state, many refer to Grand Marais as the true mecca of snowmobiling in Michigan. With an average of 232 inches of snow per year and nestled within 300 miles of marked and meticulously groomed trails, it - in fact - offers some of the best snowmobiling not only in Michigan, but in the world.
LET’S BEGIN WITH THE TRAILS… There are ten snowmobile trails in the county, all groomed every evening to knock down snow moguls and smooth out every mile. Why at night? The cold temps help freeze a smooth base before riders hit the trails the following day. Riders can travel to all parts of the county, visiting lakes, streams, falls, forests, and seemingly endless scenic sites. The trail system reaches from Shingleton to Grand Marais, Seney, Deerton, Chatham, Manistique, and Rapid River, and also connects with trails from the surrounding counties, allowing for trips of various lengths. This area has continued to maintain a lead over the rest of the nation in snowmobile trail renovations. WHERE TO STAY? If you are looking for amazing views of Lake Superior, a homey feel plus a delicious hearty breakfast, Agate Cross Bed and Breakfast is a great choice. Another option is Sunset Cabins with amenities to house up to 12. Close to the trails, and within walking distance to the downtown area, Sunset Cabins are welcoming and inviting. Looking for a little bit of luxury? there to work, at least in part, with the snowmobilers and serve in some manner to improve the trails system for the betterment of the program. In most cases the relationship was one of mutual respect with interests in snowmobiling activities being the common fabric bringing us together, but occasionally it becomes one a little more personal, and in such cases the acquaintance becomes a friendship with someone who really and truly cares. I would like to think that over the many years I have known Paul E. Gaberdiel, we have developed not only a mutual working relationship, but a strong friendship as well, and when he finished his duties and retired on November 12th, he left a huge hole in

uring the past forty plus years since I rode my first snowmobile and soon after became involved in organized snowmobiling, I have been privileged to become acquainted with a good many individuals whose employment placed them in a position of management of sorts, within the snowmobile programs. Some were employed by the state Department of Natural Resources and some by the federal government, but regardless of their position they were

the snowmobile program that the DNR will have a difficult time filling. Paul is a fairly private individual and is usually reluctant to talk about himself, but his love of the great outdoors led him to take advantage of an employment opportunity back in 1987 and thus began his long-term position with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, lasting, buy my count, of some thirty-four years. He was hired as a forest fire officer and spent many years learning about fire suppression and training on how best to control them. He says preventing them in the first place is always better than battling them, and then working on the damage control. Working for the state wasn’t Paul’s first employment, however, he says between his high school graduation in 1976 from the Tahquamenon Area Schools and his achieving a Bachelor Degree in Forest Management Science from the Michigan Technological University in 1980, he had several short-term jobs such as over-the-road semi driver, worked for a while at Watson’s Marina in Curtis, and at Louisiana Pacific in Newberry. As already stated, Paul began his career in 1987 at a Forest Fire Officer located in Seney at the Field Office and worked in that position until receiving a promotion to Forest Fire Officer Supervisor in 1998 and transferring to the Newberry Field Office. In 2001 he became Incident Commander for the Eastern Upper Peninsula Incident Management Team, better known simply as ICT3.
Over the years, Paul has gained experience with a large variety of forest fires, and says that none are ever the same, except for the extreme heat and the damage they cause. Partially because of this and his exceptional training record, he qualified as a Situation Unit Leader for out of state assignments & deployments since 2008. Although he was involved with recreation programs to some degree during most of his career, he says his promotion to Forest Fire Supervisor back in 1998 at the Newberry Management Unit gave him the authority to manage a large recreation program including, but not limited to, campground operations, cross-country ski-trails and pathways, snowmobile trails and grant sponsors, and a roads & bridges program. Rounding out his career. Paul was promoted to the Eastern U.P. Trails Specialist in 2015, a position he has held until his retirement. He says he was excited to take on the challenges that come with being a Trails Specialist and feels fortunate to have had this opportunity. He believes in the “Quality over Quantity” concept and tries to use it and a positive approach to every situation he is tasked with. When dealing with people, Paul says the positive approach inspires all involved to do their best and the results are almost always successful. Paul says his retirement from the DNR doesn’t mean he will become a couch potato by any means. He plans to pur-
sue his many hobbies a bit more aggressively and as often as possible. Those at the top of his list include snowmobiling, taking rides along local trails in his ORV, hiking, hunting, and fishing, so if he kept up with all of them equally, there wouldn’t be much free time for anything else. But he is also an active volunteer to the community and participates in that community service as an EMT for the Luce County Ambulance Corp, and he remains as the Fire Chief for the Columbus Township Fire Department so he will need to schedule his recreational endeavors around his community obligations. Paul is, and always has been a snowmobile enthusiast, he rode his first snowmobile at the tender age of eight on an old 1967 Evinrude Skeeter and as soon as he got his first Polaris you could find him racing that machine at any event where he could qualify, and he was only twelve at the time. He and his Father had a family Polaris dealership from 1985 until 2000 when his Dad retired, but he still does snowmobile and ORV repairs from time to time and says he enjoys wrenching on them occasionally. So as he finishes up his career with the state, he will still remain active in snowmobile and ORV activities and he says we haven’t seen the end of him… not by a long shot. Good Luck in your retirement Paul, you have definitely earned it. You have been a positive asset to the snowmobile community for many years. •

Who got you into snowmobiling and when; and what was their influence on you with regard to the sport? I have had love for snowmobiling since I was a kid, we used to go to the i500 years ago as a spectators and always thought how cool it would be to race there, Our kids are on snowmobiles and my two boys race the younger classes at MIRA. When did you start racing and what is your proudest achievement so far on the track? We started back in 2010 as partial sponsor pulling the semi race trailer and morphed into what it is today, In 2018 we finished 5th place at the I-500, which for us was a great achievement. What is your career goal as an owner? Our goal is always to win, we have made a lot of progress with our race program over the last three years and want to finish a year as points champions, also another goal of our team is take first place at I-500. What were the driving factors to start the race team? At the time we weren’t looking but I had a energetic strong willed Grant Vermeersch convinced us that we needed to be a part of MIRA and his current race team. His love for racing, perseverance to keep the sport going and drive to build a championship race team has kept us wanting to do better, as for him, our great drivers and a team with a great cohesiveness and drive for the same exact goals will get us to the championship soon! •

Who got you into snowmobiling and when; and what was their influence on you with regard to the sport? My dad (Grant Vermeersch) got me into racing when I was 2 years old. It was Albright shores race and he got me a kitty kat to race. My dad religiously tells the famous story of how I pinned the throttle and was first into the corner, from there I let off the gas and finished dead last. My dad is my role model, he was my number 1 person I have ever got to race with (nothing against Eric Churchill who I race with now, there’s just something special about racing with your dad) We we’re not only teammates as I grew up through the year but he built sleds and put me first in everything racing. He’s the best and smartest racer I’ve ever encountered, and now I’m fortunate enough to have him as my crew chief. He has taught me so much about how to set a sled up to handle, how to pick different lines to pass, how to save your goggles and strength when your racing. So many little things that others never get the chance to know or learn. I know I’d never be where I am today without him. He’s pushed me to never settle for 2nd and to keep pushing, he’s taught me how to win the right way, to respect everyone

It’s hard to pick my proudest achievements so far, I’ve had many great things happen including, my top finish at the SOO I-500 “4th place” in 2017, winning rookie of the year in MIRA in 2014 and also influencing the young generation of snowmobile racing like my nephew Carter. What is your career goal? My career goal would be to win the SOO I-500.

and ended up winning the points championship for the pro enduro. I also won every class I ran that year but nothing compares to that win at Drummond island and the points championship in the pro enduro. What is your career goal? I would love to set pole at the SOO I-500 so my dad can stop rubbing it in my face that he has done it multiple times and I’ve never done it. I would like it even more if we could win the race! Something we have tried for so long and have yet to achieve. Winning Eagle River world championship would also be a bonus. We have not won a race with our Team since we started and I’d really love to get them that taste of victory this year for sure. How did you become part of this racing team? I’m not even sure how it all came about. Everyone at the track is like family, we started talking to the Russell boys that help us race now and we all got together and started racing. We brought there buddy Eric Churchill on the team and started grooming him
for enduros and now myself and Eric race together. Somehow we became family and dad got a friend from work to come help, now I even have my father in law helping and many others. Somehow Joel Fiebig owner of Countryside Sales and Service stepped up to take over the team after years of support and now we are known as Countryside Motorsports. He believes in us enough to buy us the best equipment available, and I just hope we can return the favor of kicking some butt this year. We have top notch equipment, Top Notch crew and We have no excuses to not be a top contender every single weekend. So Thank you to everyone involved, they let me live my dream of racing and I know Eric is just as appreciative. And I know there’s no question where I can throw in a thanks to my wife for putting up with me being gone so much working on sleds. She’s expecting our 3rd child at the beginning of December and yet she still supports me. So I need to say thank you to her and the kids for letting me be gone so much and still putting up with me. •

f you are looking for some Michigan mid-winter merriment, TIP-UP TOWN USA will not a disappoint. For the past 71 years, folks and families from all over the state and beyond have converged on Houghton Lake in late January for what started as a small get together on the ice among fishermen, and is now the area’s biggest and most talked about winter traditions.

Spanning across two weekends (this year, January 22 - 23 and January 29), the festival kicks off with a parade, and is packed with snowy shenanigans and just plain fun for all ages. “We get about 10,000 people between the two weekends and we work hard to create interactive and engaging events and entertainment for all,” says Jay Jacobs, Executive Director of Houghton

Lake Chamber of Commerce. For the snowmobilers and ice-fanatics, there is plenty to love. The event features snowmobile drag racing, radar runs, and an antique snowmobile display. There is also a Side-By Side race. For the kids, the ice slide is a big draw, along with the Family Fun Tent featuring live entertainment, a photo booth, face painting, games and
more. Kids sixth grade and younger get into the festival free of charge. If you love ice fishing, true to the festivals origins and the area in general, it’s quite a big deal. “We run a large ice fishing competition with prizes. It’s free to enter, and it’s all in fun, but it does get a little competitive!” says Jacobs. The festival also features the infamous Polar Bear Dip. With temperatures

The Queen must represent a charitable organization and participate in an interview regarding that charity as part of the selection process. The Hometown Hero is a veteran. “We’re proud of our local veterans. inter’s coming, there’s chill in the air, and I-75 is calling your name. Yes, now’s the time to start planning your northern snowmobile adventure – and no trail riding is more epic than Ontario’s Algoma Country. Just steer your rig onto I-75 and trailer about 5 hours north (from Detroit area) to Sault Ste Marie Ontario, the vibrant Canadian city that’s your gateway to over 2,000 miles of the best trail riding you’ll ever experience. As an avid snowmobiler, I’ve visited all the top trail-riding destinations across North America and I’m a big fan of Algoma Country. Here, the snow’s deep, reliable and long lasting. Their easy-riding snowmobile trails criss-cross the iconic and unspoiled Canadian Shield wilderness. These snowy corridors are wide-open, sweeping and breath taking. They are also regularly groomed and well marked. Visitors can always find their way around conveniently, and visit their many trail-accessible, hospitality services. What’s more, Michigan riders used to constantly crowded trails will be amazed at how little traffic there is. Algoma Country’s snowmobile trails simply swallow up 1,000s of sleds into its 28,000 square miles of hinterlands in the blink of an eye. I’ve never had to line up for lunch or fuel in Algoma Country. Best of all, Algoma Country offers plenty of memorable sledding choices in both Algoma East and Algoma North. I’ve snowmobiled both areas many times, so this article shares details of my favourite rides to help you plan your own Algoma visit. suits your preference, here in Ontario’s Snowmobile Paradise! UNDERSTANDING TRAILS IN ALGOMA COUNTRY As many Michigan snowmobilers have already discovered, member clubs of the Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs (OFSC) operate snowmobile trails in Ontario. Their trails fall into two main categories, Trans Ontario Provincial (TOP) Trails and club trails. The distinction between these two trail categories indicates their primary purpose within the OFSC trail system; the category has nothing to do with trail quality; all are equally well signed and groomed. Trail Categories: TOP Trails are the primary Ontario touring routes that run in and through multiple regions and across the province. Club trails are more localized in and around communities, and are often access routes to services. They show in orange on maps and signs, and are designated by the initials of a club name and a number (e.g. SSM4, operated by the Sault Ste. Marie club

as access to TOP D from a parking/ staging area). Types of TOP Trails: TOP Trails have three different sub-categories, Trunk, Connector and Feeder. Trunk trails cross multiple regions and are the longest continuous corridors. They are colored Red on trail guides and signs, and are designated by a letter (A thru F). The three trunk trails running thru Algoma Country each originate far to the east in other regions. Within Algoma Country, they are TOP A (Hornepayne to Hearst), TOP D (Spanish to Marathon) and TOP F (Spanish to Black Creek). TOP Trails that link two trunk trails are called “connector” trails. These are displayed in Green and designated by a letter-number-letter, where each letter indicates one of the trunk trails at either end of the connector (e.g. TOP D108A, running between Dubreuilville and Hornepayne in Algoma North, and linking TOP D to TOP A). Feeders originate within various areas and provide access to trunk trails. Their color is blue and desig-

nation is letter-number (e.g. D130 “feeds” snowmobilers from Sault Ste. Marie to TOP Trail D). So, now that we understand how to navigate the trail system in Algoma Country, let’s explore riding opportunities… BASING OUT OF SAULT STE MARIE Algoma East Loops: Michigan riders can choose Sault Ste Marie as a base for several nights of your visit to enjoy the restaurants and nightlife. Day rides from the Sault into Algoma East include the 120-mile Soo Highlands Loop northeast of town through the old growth forests of the Soo Highlands. Or try the 190-mile Island Getaway Loop to the east, which takes in a scenic circuit through a St. Joseph Island deeryard. Algoma East also offers two-day rides on the 395-mile North Shore Loop (clockwise or counter-clockwise), with its rugged, hilly and panoramic trails, especially the hill country between Aubrey Falls and Elliot Lake. Alternatively, you can ride only
the loop’s southern trails, a 265-mile journey east to Spanish, returning on parallel trails connecting the numerous snowmobile-friendly communities along the North Channel of Lake Huron. Where I’ve Stayed in Sault Ste Marie (trail accessible with truck & trailer parking): Ambassador Motel, Fairfield by Marriott STAGING FROM SAULT STE MARIE Algoma North: You can also stage a multi-day saddlebag tour out of Sault Ste Marie to explore the more remote Algoma North. This vast area runs north from the city between the eastern shore of Lake Superior and the Town of Chapleau, and all the way north to Hearst. In fact, that’s where this 470mile ride from Sault Ste Marie to Hearst got its name – the “All The Way There Tour”. All The Way There Tour: Many of its trails are on logging roads, cut lines and utility corridors, perfect for racking up the miles. No doubt, this northern Algoma Country wilderness ride can make you feel like you’re in the middle of nowhere. Partly that’s because, since it’s such a huge area, you won’t see many road crossings other sleds. But it’s certifiably one of the most incredible rides I’ve done in Snowmobile Paradise Ontario – truly what many refer to as “God’s Country”. It’s the very best of the Great White North, with an endless, groomed ribbon of trail stretching for mile
after mile to far beyond every horizon. The All The Way There Tour follows TOP Trail D from north of Sault Ste. Marie to Dubreuilville (where it turns west for the 150-mile ride through White River to Marathon). There’s no fuel stop on the 120-mile stretch on TOP D between Goulais River and Halfway Haven. So after departing Sault Ste. Marie, be sure to top up in Goulais River, but it’s always a good idea to carry extra fuel anyway – just in case you run into a fresh snowfall. Speaking of Halfway Haven, that iconic rest stop (positioned at about the mid-point between Searchmont and Wawa) will be open this winter for gas and lunch! From Halfway to Wawa is another 90 miles, with 55 miles more to Dubreuilville. From there, take TOP D108A 89 miles to Hornepayne, and then TOP A for the final 107-mile leg into Hearst. Each of these snowmobile-friendly towns offer trail accessible fuel, food and lodgings. To add even more distance as you go, you can also explore Hornepayne’s 60-mile Bobcat Loop or the 109-mile Missinaibi Expedition Tour on Club Trails north of Hearst. Hot Tip: If you’re planning to overnight in any of these communities, remember there’s a gold-mining boom in many areas, so book your room in advance! STAGING FROM SEARCHMONT Another Algoma Country option for Michigan snowmobilers is to trailer to Searchmont and stage your saddlebag tour from there. Yes, your drive north from Sault Ste. Marie is a little farther (29 miles), but if you fill up your tow vehicle and sleds before arriving in Searchmont, then the first northbound leg of the All The Way There Tour to Halfway Haven for fuel is only 97 miles or so. North Shore Loop: You can also access the North Shore Loop from Searchmont via TOP Trail D north to TOP F to the next fuel at Black Creek, which is about 100 miles. Black Creek is the northern-most stop on the North Shore Loop. From there, you can continue southeast on TOP Trail F to complete the circuit counter-clockwise, returning to Searchmont via Club Trail SSM5 north off TOP Trail D. Just be sure to gas up in Thessalon or Bruce Mines before embarking on this final 85-mile ride back to your truck & trailer at Searchmont. Friends of Snowmobiling BY JIM DUKE CONTRIBUTING WRITER
T
he term “Friends of Snowmobiling” is rather ambiguous and might be applied to any number of businesses, or social organizations that support that particular wintertime recreation. Certainly, clubs and councils that gain some sort of benefit from the activity would be considered friends of snowmobiling, but what about common citizens who may, or may not, occasionally engage in

snowmobiling activities? In my several miles of travels and from the many interviews with individuals within the several snowbelt states, I was amazed at the number that have absolutely no concept of how their wintertime recreation of choice is constantly being challenged by an even larger number of individuals opposed to the very popular motorized sport of snowmobiling, and that number is

growing at an alarming rate. Much of it is due to a conflict of opinions for who should be allowed to use any public lands and to a lesser degree, some of it is due to those folks that simply don’t like the sound or smell of a combustion engine. But history tells us more than half the time, the opposition is brought about by the disrespectable and inappropriate actions within our own ranks.
What is also surprising is the number of snowmobilers who have no idea that they may be violating a state law or local ordinance just by riding their snow machines where, or when, it’s prohibited. In discussions with law enforcement officials, most say they try to be compassionate and right the wrong without legal intervention, unless the infraction has caused physical or material damage or, in a few isolated cases, the offender is rude or combative and thinks attempting to argue their way out of a citation is their best defense, which by the way never works. Almost as often as the question arises about where anyone can legally
NAUBINWAY ride, the question of by which agencies authority is specific lands restricted from recreational use, and in some cases access is completely prohibited. Researching this issue I’ve found that authority overseeing public lands may fall on multiple agencies, and is always referred to as “what best serves the common good” and/or “what is best for overall preservation of the environment”. Basically, it all boils down to location and, is it by community ordinance, county statute, state law, or federal regulation? In many cases, there may be permission by one or more while being restricted by others, and for the same piece of real estate. Regardless of which agency is responsible, there will always be those, as mentioned in the first paragraph, that simply doesn’t want motorized or mechanized conveyances to invade the sanctity of the wilderness. In most snowmobile clubs and associations, these individuals are referred to as greenies, tree-huggers, or just radicals, but what many are not aware of is the clout they can muster when they band together! Once they establish an anti-motorized agenda and initiate litigation, it may be only a matter of time until snowmobilers and other motorized recreationalists find themselves on the outside looking in! That’s when we discover we need some help, but who can we turn to? The answers may be as varied as the questions, and as it is with the majority of snowmobilers
who just want to get out on the trails or backcountry and play, the task of doing legal battle is left to the few who realize that the value lies in organized clubs, councils, and associations. But as important as it is to support the local and state clubs and associations, those organizations seldom have the contacts or clout to deal with such problems beyond their own state borders or within their own state legislatures. If, for any reason, the regulatory agencies that control recreational activities on public lands is unwilling or incapable of resolving the conflicts, it might be time to expand the arena and get the national snowmobile organizations involved. As reluctant as the local and state associations may be to ask for help, assistance is always available and just a phone call away. The American Council of Snowmobile Associations has dedicated dollars in a legal defense fund for just such occasions, and when the legal battles escalate from state courts into federal jurisdiction, their contact list at the federal level, and of friendly lawmakers is invaluable. Not all elected officials are snowmobile friendly, and many are openly opposed to any kind of motorized recreation and almost always side with the radical groups, so to make sure at least some of the legislators at the federal level recognize snowmobiling as a viable recreational activity enjoyed by millions of individuals across the country, snowmobilers have united and formed a

he Keweenaw Snowmobile Club needs your help! Before we get into the specifics and the exciting new plans for the Keweenaw Snowmobile Club, I wanted to talk a bit more about the Keweenaw and the impact this area has had on me. As a child I had a real affinity for the weather, especially winter. I especially enjoyed watching the weather channel for potential snow storms and to see how winter weather was impacting other areas of the country. One day, late in the 1996-97 winter season while watching the weather channel

and peering outside into a relatively warm and snowless Northern Illinois backyard, they cut to a picture of a winter wonderland that still had massive amounts of snow in Marquette, MI. With winter seemingly done in my area, it seemed like a great time to try to convince my parents about a quick adventure where I could see all this snow and possibly do a bit of snowmobiling. With a bit of convincing, thanks mom, my dad and I headed out on our first trip to the Upper Peninsula. The Upper Peninsula, and later the Keweenaw, quickly became our

go-to destination for snowmobiling as we evolved with the sport. There was just something about the Keweenaw that resonated with me, with its elevation changes, scenic views, and ample amounts of glistening Lake Effect Snow; This was truly a unique place. The snowmobiling was always excellent, with many miles of well-maintained trails throughout the Keweenaw to explore and many miles beyond this that were all seamlessly connected. With each trip I learned more about the area, its rich history, and the wonderful people who help to make this such a great
place. This truly became a special area to me, and it all started with my first snowmobile adventure. Fast Forwarding to today. I now find myself as a resident of the area, along with my wonderful family, and I currently volunteer on the Keweenaw Snowmobile Club Board. The organization currently maintains and grooms over 200 miles of snowmobile trails in the Keweenaw Peninsula. It truly takes a team effort to make this operation successful, with our groomer operators providing pristine snowmobile trails throughout the season to help make great snowmobile memories for our many visitors. As we look to the future, and the long-term viability of the Keweenaw Snowmobile Club, we need your help. We are in dire need of a new groomer barn to help store and maintain our fleet of 5 groomers. The current facility is in incredibly poor shape and doesn’t have adequate space to store the groomers; along with a lack of proper heating. The facility and its poor condition make groomer maintenance very challenging and contributes to an increased level of equipment breakdowns. In order to maintain excellent trails throughout the winter season a groomer barn would provide the needed facilities to keep the groomers on the trails making the trails great for everyone. I t’s difficult to write anything specific about my dad because his life’s achievements could fill more volumes than I could ever recount, several years of which he is reluctant to discuss or even talk about. Those would be mostly times during his years of military service which began in the last months of the Korean conflict and ended shortly after the Viet Nam war. He has said most of his career was spent in the “Silent Service” but he also had stints of other duties that, to this day he refuses to divulge. My Dad is none other than “the real” Jim Duke. He can be stubborn at times and has a stronger willpower than anyone else I know of, so once his mind is made up you can bet it won’t be changed easily. Equally strong is his passion for the sport of snowmobiling, and I’m proud to say that I share that passion. I was born just one month shy of a year before he chose to retire from the U.S. Navy, in the town of Groton Connecticut while Dad was stationed at a facility on the Submarine Base there. Shortly after he retired, he took a position as a Patrolman with the Groton Long Point Police Department, studied at the University of New Haven and received an associate degree in Criminal Justice, and graduated from the Connecticut State Police Academy. Although he was very happy with his post military employment choice, both he and

Snomads has grown in membership, I’m told, to over two hundred members. Although most of his early rides were pretty much limited to just male members, my dad wanted to get the family involved as well, and always made sure we were included in as many activities as possible and insisted the kids get the safety training and state certified at the earliest age possible. I, personally, took the safety class a couple of years before I would be the minimum age for certification, but on my 12th birthday, Dad presented me with my card and patch, and said I could now legally ride a snowmobile on my own. My brother and both my sisters enjoyed these same benefits, but I don’t believe they ever had the same passion my dad had instilled in me, except maybe with my sister Judi. Some of the fondest memories of my childhood were when we would all go on a trip snowmobiling, regardless of where it was or for how long. As I grew up and started a family of

He always kept enough snowmobiles available to accommodate the entire family on our many rides. Becoming aware of issues concerning snowmobiling and his desire to always make things better, he became more involved in the state snowmobile association and DNR administrated programs, working on various committees and eventually becoming Vice President and then President of MSA. He also served early on with the Snowmobile Advisory Committee (SAC) and remained active throughout the many years that followed. When Governor Granholm

abolished the SAC and established the Michigan Snowmobile & Trails Advisory Council (MSTAC), my dad was appointed to represent snowmobilers and citizens of the Upper Peninsula. When the “S” was removed and the organization became just the Michigan Trails Advisory Council (MTAC), he continued in that position until his term was completed just over a year ago and Governor Whitmer declined his request for reappointment. He did remain on the Snowmobile Advisory Workgroup (SAW), becoming Chair of that group in February of 2020, retaining that position until he decided to retire and step down in December of 2020. My Dad’s philosophy has always been “use me or lose me”, saying if he can’t be involved and work at making things better, there’s no place in any organization for him. I can truthfully say that he has always lived by that saying and has, in my opinion, made a difference in every club, association, fraternal organization, and even in the few occupations throughout his life. As for his snowmobiling achievements, there are many, not
only for his founding of the Snomads Club in 1982 but also his leadership roles in the Michigan Snowmobile Association back in the mid-1990’s. As President, he was the delegate to the International Snowmobile Council’s Midwest Chapter and once his term with MSA was done, he remained active and became Vice Chair and then Chairman of that Chapter. As he became more involved he also became much more knowledgeable about snowmobilers concerns, both at the national level and those affecting the sport internationally. He was the state delegate at the 1995 Congress when the national organization was formed and was the one who suggested it be named the American Council of Snowmobile Associations. When his term as the Michigan delegate was completed, he was elected to the position as the ACSA Vice President in 2001-02 and then served as President in 2003 & 04. He remained active with the both the state and national associations, serving on a number of committees including bylaws and the parliamentarian. He has since stepped back from duties in the state association but is a Life Member and keeps up to date on state issues. My Dad has been a member of many snowmobile clubs, councils, and state associations throughout the years, not only in Michigan but in several other states as well and has assisted in

1973 Polaris Starfire 440
T
his 440cc triple cylinder free air TX Starfire was discovered in Bay City, MI. The gas tank was modified for endure racing and the machine has the rubber endure track. The 1973 TX Starfire came in four free air Starflame Fuji engines sizes: twin cylinder 295 (294cc), 340 (335cc) models and the triple cylinder 440 (439cc) and 650 (649cc) models. A few special 800cc kits were available to modify the 650 engines. All engines were CDI ignitions This machine also used the light weight Equaliberator slide-rail suspension, has disc brakes, all aluminum welded chassis, CDI ignition, and has a quick change front drive shaft. Two tracks were available; the standard cleated 15” track and an all rubber track for endure racing. The 1973 TX Starfire is still popular today in vintage racing. •
