At Michigan Snowmobiler and ORV, we had quite an emotional month. We spent one weekend with family celebrating the life of a loved one in a truly incredible tribute, but still saying goodbye. The following weekend was one of the most fun, happiest weddings we have ever attended. Both groups of people have had a tremendous, positive influence on Scott and I and this magazine. But for this letter I’d like to focus on the first group. When I was in high school, I had two English teachers describe me as a virtually unteachable writer. So, for this issue, I am paying tribute to our “Aunt Patti Drzewiecki”. She would not let Uncle Jerry read our magazine each month until she had at least read my editor’s letter. So, for this first letter he reads this month, this is for them. Her encouragement helped me forget the unkind words said to me all those years ago.
To all of you talented Sled and ORV enthusiasts – whatever your skill set is – if you know a kid that needs encouragement, a little help getting
to the next skill level, and you are a skilled person – step up. My Aunt and Uncle did that for me. I write to support our sport, but there are so many other ways that we can inspire and support each other and our kids. Looking back – I dreamed of pursuing a variety of careers. My kids laugh when I say I thought of being a mechanic or a truck driver (they just can’t picture me any other way than who I am now), but there were a few

Cadillac, Michigan is a snowmobiler’s paradise, and with 200 miles of groomed trails, it’s been a destination for adventure in the snow for decades. Now, the area is expanding its offering and extending the fun by featuring a new kind of excursion that’s a gamechanger for visitors, locals and businesses alike.
With 299,195 licensed ORVs in the state as of September 2022 (up 20 percent from 2019), the Cadillac Area Visitors Bureau (CAVB) saw an opportunity to also position the region as a destination for ORV recreation to capitalize on a trend of lengthening recreation shoulder seasons and expanding visitation year-round.
So on May 1, the CAVB along with state, regional and local business leaders dedicated a new 100-plus-mile ORV Scenic Ride along open Wexford County roads and U.S. Forest Service roads — increasing connectivity to neighboring roads, trails, and communities, and providing a tremendous addition to Michigan’s statewide trail network.
“The scenic ride offers so many opportunities for exploration, says CAVB Executive Director Kathy Morin. “Whether you want to go deep into the woods, explore scenic overlooks, seek out a restaurant, or go from point A to point B, it has something for everyone and is safe and easy to navigate.”
She also points out that the ride is designed to accommodate any length of time, and is ideal for a twohour family fun ride, an allday expedition, or anything in between.
Funded through a $48,000 United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Rural Development grant and an additional $52,000 by the

CAVB, the Cadillac Area ORV the Scenic Ride is a culmination of almost two years of hard work and collaboration between the Cadillac Area Visitors Bureau; federal, state and local agencies; and ORV user groups and a critical goal in its development was safety.
“The mission is to help visitors enjoy the region via ORV while doing so responsibly and safely,” Morin explains.
To that end, comprehensive mapping and printed brochures are available, including a
dozen points of interest such as restaurants, lodging, gas stations, stores, and scenic overlooks. Four kiosks with mapping, safety, and education are positioned at key intersections along the ride, and eight are located at businesses along the ride. Numerous U.S. Forest Service markers also adorn USFS roads to help people navigate the area.

Adds Kelly Wolgamott, interim vice president of Travel Michigan,“ORVing is a growing recreational experience in Michigan and a great way to explore the state’s 13,000 miles of trails. As we inspire travelers to ‘Keep It Fresh’ in Pure Michigan this season, we applaud the Cadillac area’s dedication to making ORVing an enjoyable, approachable and safe activity.”

Along the route sit a plethora of unique and charming restaurants and stores that riders can enjoy including the Boon Country Store and the Meauwataka General Store.
“The Boon County Store is famous for its cheese selection, and the Meauwataka General Store is family-owned and serves great food made from scratch,” said Morin. “Ellen’s Corners is great too. There are so
many quaint and friendly stops along the way.”
ORV rental is available locally through Bigfoot Epic Adventures, Greater North Powersports and Rental or West Side Rec Rentals.
In closing, Morin says she’s most excited about bringing new people to the area to experience new things.
“The Cadillac area has hosted snowmobile enthusiasts for decades,” she said. “The addition
of a great ORV ride now makes the area even more desirable, and the region is ready to embrace visitors and provide a great experience.”

Fall colors erupt from each and every leaf in Michigan’s Western Upper Peninsula come fall. Remote, truly untouched and strung together by hundreds of miles of historical railroad-grade ORV trails – this part of the Upper Peninsula promises firework views of the season’s change. In the Village of Ontonagon, where the town’s river meets Lake Superior, a special tradition brings the senior community together through ORV camaraderie. People in the Upper Peninsula take care of one another which fuels the spirit of the MI-TRALE Senior Fall Color Ride. This year’s gathering falls on Thursday, Sept. 26.
Free to those who sign up, a large network of volunteers bring sideby-sides and ATVs with plenty of room for senior passengers. Then, everyone embarks on a scenic fall color tour across more than fifteen miles of Ontonagon and Houghton County’s ORV trails. A long ride works up an appetite, so lunch is on the house too! Event organizers say in large years they’ve had as many as 70-some folks in attendance. Trail riding is a unique experience and for most people it can be a freeing and enjoyable time. continued on page 26
If you’re looking for an extra scenic trail after the ride, try the Pioneer Trail which runs through the Ottawa National Forest.
continued from page 24
“When folks get older they may not have the ability or means to get out and see fall colors,” said Dave Bishop, MI-TRALE Treasurer. “The whole idea is to take them on an ATV which a lot of them have never been on before and go out in the backwoods and the trail and show them the fall color.”
MI-TRALE is a regional nonprofit trails alliance that helps manage over 550 miles of ATV and multi-use trails across the Western Upper Peninsula. The group promotes safety and responsible use of trail systems in Michigan. The trip takes riders close to history, abundant beauty and offers striking fall views at high elevations of dense forest and flowing rivers.
“The route we have been taking all these years is the easiest route for us,” said Bishop. “We leave the Fairgrounds in Ontonagon County, which is the Bill Nichols Trail. We take it all the way to Twin Lakes. We cooperate with Twin Lakes State Park and they let us use their pavilion and
we serve a pasty lunch to everybody from Krupps Mini Mart. We take our time going up there and stop on the triple trestles. Most people get out of their ATV and wander around on the trestles looking at the view.”
The triple trestles Bishop refers to are worth the trip alone. Being a historical railroad-grade, the wooden and metal flat surface bridges extend for a spectacular 1,400 feet over deep gorges in the forest. Each of the bridges pass over one of three branches of the Firesteel River near Greenland. They were originally built by the Copper Range Railroad in 1899 and were owned by the Copper Range Company.
Once the group reaches the trestles – they’re in for a short demonstration by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR). A representative will be waiting to give a nice presentation on what gives us our fall colors and why they’re the best in Upper Michigan. Bishop says you can see

for a mile or two from the Firesteel bridges. Take in the sights and enjoy this natural beauty. At this time of year in the Upper Peninsula, it can get chilly in the woods. Make sure you pack some layers to stay warm (or cool!) on the ride.
“When you’re not driving, you have so much more time to see what’s going on,” said John Fourez, MI-TRALE Vice President. “Our average speed rarely gets above 15 miles per hour on the 18-mile trail. We’re not in it for speed, we’re in it for beauty. The railroad grades, you can just ride forever. It’s not unusual for people to ride 200 miles in one day and not ride the same trail twice. We have four electric charging systems in the area for those with electric UTVs as well.”
The ride has two sessions. One half of the group will depart on ORVs from the Ontonagon Fairgrounds, while the other half will take a bus to Twin Lakes State Park. Once everyone meets up
and has lunch, the first half takes the bus back to Ontonagon and the second half gets to ride ORVs back.
“They all say thank you and they talk about it for a while. It’s just something we do for our senior citizens and we cover all the costs,” said Bishop. “We get a lot of volunteers with their side by sides too that go with us and help transport all these people. Everybody comes together and makes this happen.”
If you’re convinced you our your beloved senior wants to ride: send an email to Bishop to register for free at mitrale49953@ gmail.com. Or call at (906) 884-6617. MI-TRALE encourages people to bring their own ORVs as well to help bring people along. They just ask you register for a head count and for how many pasties to pick up! Twin Lakes State Park is a great location for campers and has an excellent shoreline for fishing. If you’re traveling from out of the area, consider booking a campsite.
Starting and ending in
Ontonagon, riders arrive in a small town with big culture and a rich history. ORVs are prohibited on River Street (US-45) but the rest of Ontonagon is open to ORV traffic. The trailhead plants you right next to the Ontonagon River and downtown business district. Take a stroll down the beach and enjoy fresh Lake Superior Views at the mouth of the river. You can learn the area’s farming, logging and mining story at the Ontonagon County Historical Museum downtown.
A unique exhibit at the museum is a restored iron lung. It was brought out during the earlier COVID pandemic as a demonstration piece of devices used to combat polio. Additionally, folks can view an original fresnel lens from the Ontonagon Lighthouse. Which, is the westernmost lighthouse in Michigan for the lighthouse enthusiasts.
If you need breakfast before the ride, get the hottest coffee and the most delicious pancakes in town at Syl’s Cafe. It’s open from 7:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. every day and has homestyle hot plates to feed the hungriest of riders on the trail. In the afternoon, head into Roxey’s Bar & Grill for a cold beer and hot french fries. Mingle with locals and you’ll be sure to get even more recommendations.
If you’re looking for a deeper adventure – look to the Adventure Mine in neighboring Greenland. Experiences here range from easier walking tours to rappelling down to a lower level of the mine. Though – note that most of the tour options may be
difficult if you have limited mobility.
Seniors and families should come out this September and ride with MI-TRALE. The ride fosters a great sense of connection and is fun for all. The vastness of Michigan’s Western Upper Peninsula is waiting to be discovered and will reward you with intense fall colors. For more information, visit the MI-TRALE website or follow them on social media. Don’t miss this chance to experience the breathtaking beauty of fall in the Upper Peninsula and create lasting memories with the MI-TRALE Senior Fall Color Ride. •
