A

t Michigan Snowmobiler and ORV we are enjoying the full fun of summer as we head into the month of August. Hope your plans include one of the amazing events Michigan has to offer. Check out the QR code on page 22 that will link you to MichigansBackyard.org for all sorts of great Michigan adventures. We sure love our state and it is our priviledge to bring you stories every month to motivate families to get out and have fun together in one of our many, beautiful trail systems. Case in point, early this spring Scott and I spoke with a family from Dirt Dudes at Twisted Trails. I’ve honestly been looking forward to writing this editor letter since meeting this family. It’s families like them that make working for Michigan Snowmobiler and ORV so much fun. This young family makes a commitment to spend most of their free time together riding, camping and having a blast together. I had a great conversation with the mom who mentioned they were getting ready to move in order to be closer to her husband’s job and to get into a better school system for their daughter. That’s commitment. After all, Mom’s and Dad’s are the original first responders for our future riders. These two parents sure seemed to have it figured out. If my memory serves me correctly, the move was going to allow the family about

an extra two to three hours per week together. The mom and dad had already spent quite a bit of time discussing which school in the area was going to be “the” new one. Important decisions being made in such a fun environment. Then, dad and daughter jumped into the side by side for pictures and perhaps another adventure as Scott and I left to head back into the office to create another issue. I wonder if they had any idea how much inspiration they provided. What a great day! As you read through our issue and get great ideas for truly fun August adventures – keep our schools, parents and kids in your thoughts and prayers this month. We sure want our future riders safe and ready to keep our trails preserved, maintained and here for all the future generations to come. As always at Michigan Snowmobiler and ORV, we hope this issue has our readers dreaming of fun! We look forward to seeing everyone at local events, chapter meetings and volunteering in support of Michigan Snowmobiling and ORVs. Please remember to keep our veterans and first responders in your thoughts and prayers. Please feel free to reach out to us. We love to hear from our readers. Be safe and enjoy the trails until our next issue.

As alway, you can reach out to us at Michigan Snowmobiler at publisher@michsnowmag.com

xtending out into the deep waters of Lake Superior at the very tip of the Keweenaw Peninsula sits Copper Harbor, the northernmost permanently populated community and northernmost point of mainland in the state of Michigan. Here, snow falls 80 days out of the year between October and May, with annual accumulations averaging 22 feet. Over 230 miles of pristine trails link riders to an additional 2,500+ miles through the Upper Peninsula. It is a snowmobilers or ATV enthusiasts dream come true.

With seemingly endless incredible side loops and backcountry jaunts, no two rides are ever the same. And the unique and fun attractions, breathtaking views and cozy one-of-a-kind stops make it hard to narrow down what the next ride will be. Here are just a couple examples of the many great excursions the Copper Harbor area has to offer. Take Trail #3 from Mohawk up and over Brockway Mountain. This beautiful route offers plenty of places to stop and stretch your legs. Enjoy a Vollwerth’s footlong hot dog grilled to perfection at The Cliff View Bar & Cabins,

If the Mud Ain’t Flying

you Ain’t Trying… BY DONNA SULIVAN CONTRIBUTING WRITER

W

here else can you have fun 7 days a week with mud, trails, campfires, racing, and some down and dirty fun on 400 acres…well if you haven’t been to Twisted Trails then you are missing out on all the fun! Twisted Trails is owned and operated by siblings Dale and Donna Humphrey who were born and raised in the area and started off roading at a young age. Dale even had his senior picture taken with his prized mud truck and was featured in 4 Wheel Magazine with one of the rigs he built. You could say it runs in their blood. This passion has grown to them having the largest Off Road Park in Michigan with 400 acres of trails, sand, swampy areas, rocky terrain for

10 |

a challenge, a gravel pit, an a huge mud pit area currently in the process of expansion. Check out the half mile short course track for some jumps and curves to race your buddies on. Coming soon is another one for kids under 12 for the next generation of off roaders. The nice thing about the trails is that you don’t have to be the professional rider there are trails for everyone, you can check out the scenery with a leisurely ride on the easy trails all the way to testing your skills on the extreme trails where we recommend winches and lockers; either way you get miles and miles of trails with beautiful northern Michigan scenery in addition to the fun mud and dirt of an off road park. This 400 acre park is now open

10am-6pm daily with extended hours for special events on Fridays and Saturdays generally from 9am to 10pm; come to ride the off road park and camp or hit up one of the many events throughout the entire year. Their on-site rustic campground allows you to ride your off road rig right into the park so the convenience of being able to take a break or roll into your campsite after a long day is definitely a plus. Kick back around the bonfire for a little R&R after a long day of riding. They currently have a few electrical sites and hope to expand in the future but don’t worry if you don’t get an electrical site you can kick on the generator during your stay. They continue to make improvements including the current expansion

project they are working on of the new 40x72 ft General Store with bathrooms, showers and a new dump station. It’ll be nice to clean off after a hard day of riding the trails. August is a full month at Twisted Trails with lots of special events and fun for everyone. The month kicks off with a jamming Summer Dog Party August 5-7 with Drew Hale, Jesse Jefferson and Headwind Blues Project rocking out on the stage, trail riding, mud racing, poker run, and joining in on the Copemish Heritage Days Parade. A weekend of fun for everyone! The park then shuts down for a full week to work with the 22 2 None Organization to set up for the DK5K Tough Mudder on August 13th, a 5k on foot obstacle through the park with teams of volunteers there to cheer you on the whole way getting you to the finish line. This year there is a MV-22 Osprey set to land, exciting and something you definitely don’t want to miss. All the proceeds from this event go to help veteran’s combat suicide. August is still not over because the local Dirt Dudes begin their invasion of the park August 19-21st with Crashapalooza 2.0 with events, live music, giveaways, and a lot of fun you definitely never want to miss out on. Check out these guys pushing their rigs to the limits and having fun on their home turf. If you missed Crashapalooza last year you missed out and you need to get your tickets because you don’t want to miss another one! If you thought all the fun was in August you would be wrong because September Twisted Trails kicks

off the month with KLT’s Kamp Omelette September 9-11 that benefits the local Cherryland Humane Society and Charlie Golf One with more fun. Bands rock the stage all weekend with Detroit Rock City, Scarkasm, Sunset Blvd and the Liki Titi Band, corn hole tournaments, campfires and more. What’s better than having fun and benefiting a great cause in the process??? After hitting up the stage we need to hit the trails on September 18 and get those motors rev’ed up and racing, endurance style; one and a half hours of pure adrenaline rushing through your veins on over 4 miles of trails to see if you have what it takes to not only finish but finish first for the last Trail Master Challenge of the season. Twisted Trails works with the RBOR for over 60 racers from all over the country so they can test their skills from stock, modified, unlimited and SXS classes to compete to say they finished and came out on top. Tickets at Twisted are very affordable at only $20 per person for the Off Road Park, $10 per person for rustic camping and event tickets vary per event. For all their ticket pricing; 5 and under are free and kids ages 6-15 are half off adult pricing. They also have a Stay and Play Package that gives you 25% off when you stay at least 2 nights and play at least 3 days so make a weekend or more of it and save! The Emerald City

BY KIM KISNER CONTRIBUTING WRITER

I

ncorporated in 1901 this small UP city was named after the then-called Monistique river running through it. A spelling error on the city charter led to its current spelling – Manistique - and now the spelling of the river. Speaking of names, Manistique is nicknamed “The Emerald City” for the emerald green waters of the nearby Kitch-iti-kipi spring, the largest spring in the state of Michigan. The Manistique Area Schools athletic teams are referred to as the «Emeralds.» Several local businesses include «Emerald City» in their names. The city lies on the north shore of Lake Michigan at the mouth of the now-called Manistique River, which forms a natural harbor that has been improved with breakwaters, dredging, and the Manistique East Breakwater Lighthouse. The simple yet stunning red lighthouse was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2005. Now, on to the snowmobile and ORV trails. With 165 inches of snow per year, access to over 2,000 miles of connected and groomed snowmo-

bile trails, and warm, welcoming people, the city is quite a destination for snowmobilers, ORV enthusiasts and anyone interested in spending some relaxing time in the beautiful outdoors. Spend a day, weekend, week or a season snowmobiling through the Great Lakes, into the inviting forest and over hundreds of miles of scenic spots, streams, and falls. The snowmobile trail system extends to and connects Manistique, Shingleton Grand Marais, Marquette, Chatham, Seney, and Rapid River. The surrounding areas have so much to offer. Manistique is situated on the south end of Michigan’s first Rail Trail, the Haywire Grade Trail/ Trailhead #41. This railway was used to haul lumber from the Hiawatha national forest – some of which was used to rebuild Chicago after the great fire of 1871 that destroyed over 300 miles. A ride on this unique trail out to Shingleton and back is well worth it. The north winds from Lake Superior make for 32 miles (one way) of fantastic snowmobiling.

Viewing raft at Palms Book State Park. The state park contains Michigan’s largest spring Kitch iti kipi which is Native American means Mirror of Heaven.

The trails are managed by the Schoolcraft County Motorized Trails Association, who keep them fully groomed and pristine. During peak season on a Friday or Saturday, a groomer can pass over 250 sleds on the trail. A MUST SEE An absolute must-see between or after riding is the afore-mentioned Kitch-iti-kipi (The Big Spring). The largest natural spring in Michigan - at 40 deep – it remains at 45 degrees all year round, so it is never frozen. Over 10,000 gallons of clear water per minute gush from the fissures in the underlying limestone, which can be clearly seen from a large glass-bottom raft that can be used year-round. continued on page 16 MICHIGAN SNOWMOBILER + ORV • AUGUST • 2022

WHERE TO STAY The Jack Pine Lodge is a favorite. Legend has it that Blaine Brannon won the original Jack Pine Lodge in a poker game in 1936. Then in 1945, he built a new lodge only a few feet from the original one. Located directly on the Haywood Trail, trailhead #41 (Haywire), the lodge offers a restaurant pub with a full menu, rental cabins, and a great “lodge” atmosphere. Coming in to Fish and Hunt? Check out the only motel in downtown Manistique – the Harbor Motel. Just ½ block from the marina, restaurants, bars and more, the motel also houses a fish cleaning station and two freezers to freeze your catch. Coming in for fun beyond the trails? Check out the Gray Wolf Lodge at 6770 West US Highway. With a heated pool and spa, Three Seasons Restaurant next door, private beach lake access, nearby casino and snowmobile rental, this lodge has it all. WHERE TO EAT Clyde’s Drive-in has a very cute old time feel. You can sit in your car, at picnic benches or continued on page 18

4FEST EVENTS The Detroit location is one of four events that take place throughout the country. While Detroit and Elk River, Minnesota are the only two listed on the schedule for this year. The group has gone to Idaho and Austin, Texas as well. As the events have taken place, they had racked up 41,405 trail miles driven and had 21,300 guests come through the gates. A very successful run of events over the past four years. Each event has its own unique opportunities that you must go and check out. As the group has made certain partnerships, it has opened the door for different things to happen at each event. Such as Travis Pastrana, Nitro Circus and Nitro Rallycross will be at the Elk River event later this September.

GENERAL INFORMATION The Holly Oaks ORV Park is located at 14551 Shields Road, Holly, Michigan 48442 and just off of I-75. The gates will open at 9 o’clock on both Saturday and Sunday. You can register online at www.4festevents.com/detroit. There are six different registration options available starting with the simple guest spectator pass for $10. All the way

Making the Best of What We Got! BY JIM DUKE CONTRIBUTING WRITER

T

o say it’s been a good summer so far would more than likely be challenged by a large majority of folks that look forward to spending maximum time outdoors with friends & family, enjoying the recreational activities of choice and without the several distractions that may or may not actually materialize. In most cases, we just make do with what we get and make the best of it. In discussing what a perfect day is like, I was somewhat surprised to hear many folks think dry and dusty trails are better than those where a recent rain has fallen. Maybe dry & dusty would be the case for the unit in front, but certainly not for any of those following. But in the second case there needs to be marginal rain for the area and not the gully-washers

we’ve seen in many parts of the Upper so far this year. According to one longtime rider who knows most trails in the area very well, a well-dampened trail surface is ideal for any size group of units, just enough to create a no dust / no mud condition. He was quick to add, however, that such conditions are more rare than common. At a recent unofficial meeting of a group of ORV riders that had stopped for a lunch break at a local eatery, I had the opportunity to visit with several of them and discovered most were from other parts of the state, and two were visiting from a neighboring one. It seems they had all become acquainted within the last few days and had decided to team up, so to speak. All but one couple were staying at a campground

near Grand Marais, so it was only fitting that they were all drawn to a large campfire in a common area of that facility. As one fellow put it, “we’ve made some new friends that will be a long-lasting friendship for sure.” The group was just finishing their break and getting ready to get back on the trails, so I didn’t get the chance to get their names or exactly where they were all from, but I did manage to determine that they considered this part of the Upper Peninsula to be best for their riding style and the number of trails sufficient to permit several days of touring without too much backtracking. The assumed leader of the group said he & his mate had made several trips up to this locale, and it was one of their favorite spots to come, camp, and ride.

Their afternoon itinerary was to head back east toward Curtis and hopefully a final fuel stop in Seney before returning to their base camp. I was invited to stop up join them later in the evening, but prior obligations would prevent that from happening. I did offer business cards to them and suggested they get in touch if it should become necessary that they might require some local help. As they made their way out to their units, I watched them preparing for their next adventure and remembered what one of them had said during our recent conversations. He said, “Time is short to try and wait for the perfect day… we’re making do with what we got.” I don’t believe it could have been said any better, and I wholeheartedly agree! •
