COMCAST RISE In June 2020, Comcast NBCUniversal announced the development of a comprehensive, multi-year plan to allocate $75 million in cash and $25 million in media over the next three years to fight injustice and inequality against any race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, or ability. Starting March 1, 2021, qualifying businesses may apply for the Comcast RISE Investment Fund.

INDUSTRY 4.0 DEMO GRANT FUND Industry 4.0 Demo Grant Fund – $110,000 Available for MBEs (apply before April 2022): The technology readiness demo fund is part of a larger initiative, backed by the State of Michigan, to help Michigan’s small and medium manufacturers embrace and adopt Industry 4.0 technologies and ideologies. Companies are encouraged to work with Automation Alley and MMTC who are in the process of completing ‘Industry 4.0 Readiness’ assessments. The I4.0 accelerator team helps MBEs identify opportunities to leverage cutting-edge industry 4.0 technology and works with each manufacturer to understand what a ‘successful’ implementation looks like. When there is an opportunity identified, manufacturers can apply for matching funds (up to $5,000) to support the initial installation and demo.

Continental AG, a German multinational automotive parts manufacturing company was looking to expand their Mexico facility plant operations. Commercial Construction Incorporated (CCI), a Michigan-based industrial contractor had the privilege of serving as the rigging general contractor. CCI was responsible for performing multi phases of machinery dismantling in North Carolina and transportation and reinstallation in Mexico. With experienced crews and specialty equipment, CCI has the ability to self-perform rigging projects locally and nationally. In addition, CCI’s strategic partnerships in Mexico offers their clients a comprehensive turnkey solution. The project will serve to enable around 20,000 square meters of space for a production floor. With this expansion, San Luis Potosi will be the largest automotive plant in the world for the Hydraulic Brake Systems (HBS) business unit. “Our ability to deliver and lead projects nationally along with the relationships we have built in Mexico were key components in the overall success of this project.” - Robert L. As we commemorate Latin American Heritage month, MMSDC recognizes a few of the many powerful contributions of the Hispanic/Latinx community, which currently comprises approximately 18 percent of the US population.

1966 Cesar Chavez, general director of the National Farm Workers Association, leads 75 Latino and Filipino farm workers on a historic 340-mile march from Delano, California to the state capitol in Sacramento. In solidarity with Chavez, millions of Americans stopped eating grapes to support farm workers.

2010 Mexican business magnate, investor and philanthropist Carlos Slim Helu is ranked as the richest person in the world by the Forbes business magazine.

2020 National Museum of the American Latino established at the Smithsonian.

1960 Roberto Clemente becomes the ﬁrst Latin American and Caribbean to win a World Series as a starting player. He was also inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1973, making him the ﬁrst Latin American and Caribbean honoree.

MONICA L. MARTINEZ The MMSDC is proud to honor the memory of a well-respected diversity trailblazer Monica L. Martinez, a National Community Affairs leader for Comerica Bank. Her unexpected passing took everyone by surprise, especially the many colleagues and associates who valued her support and dedication.

Many of her colleagues attended the funeral mass in Michigan including Curtis Farmer, Comerica chairman and CEO. The bank also placed a full-page ad to show reverence for her commitment to the community. “Monica provided unwavering support and advocacy for diversity, particularly in Southeast Michigan, said Gloria Oldani, MMSDC board member and Comerica Bank Director of Corporate Procurement. “Monica was a friend and ally to many that knew her, and her leadership and commitment will be missed by Comerica Bank as well as by the people and groups she positively influenced.” Born in Southwest Detroit, Monica, learned the traditions of her Mexican heritage and was taught Spanish by her grandmother. She carried the love for her culture throughout her career. Martinez earned a bachelor’s and master’s degree from Eastern Michigan University.

She had a 10-year tenure at Ford Motor Co., before joining Comerica Bank in 2006, holding several positions. Most recently, she managed Comerica’s external community initiatives and partnerships, 19 Diversity Business Resource Groups, corporate volunteer program focusing on low- and moderate-income communities and continued to serve as Comerica’s National Hispanic Business Development Manager. Monica’s involvement in the community was undeniable and an inspiration to all. “The impact Monica made in the community is immeasurable,” said Irvin Ashford, Jr., Comerica Chief Community Officer. “She will be remembered for her integrity and admirable rapport with philanthropic partners and business associates that will create opportunities for generations to come.” She also served on several nonprofit boards and received countless honors and recognitions over the course of her life.

SIDENT’S CORNER I’d like to take a moment to salute the Latino members of the MMSDC, thank them for their partnership and congratulate them on being astute business people. According to the 2020 State of the Latino Entrepreneurship Report, a study by the Stanford Graduate School of Business, Latino Owned Businesses (LOB) that leverage formal business organizational networks are more than twice as likely to experience funding success as those that did not engage in any networking activities (63% versus 28%). Their data show that businesses that leverage organizational and personal networks are more likely to come in contact with capital providers, which may provide opportunities to build the relationships needed to facilitate funding requests. Our own deep dive into the state of minority business, released earlier this year, offers that among Latino owned businesses with annual revenues greater than $1 million, funding was scarce, with only 29% of Latino-owned businesses approved for loans, compared to 76% for white-owned businesses (WOBs). Black and Hispanic businesses lack access to capital that fuels many high-growth industries today. For example, in 2020, Black and Hispanic businesses received only 2.6% of all venture funding. MBEs also start with lower start-up capital than white-owned firms and are less likely to receive credit from banks. Corporations can leverage their cheaper access to capital to provide easier access to MBEs without diluting owner equity. The challenge to attaining economic parity is unquestionably complex, and the solutions are not always known or easy. But the responsibility to act boldly to make a meaningful difference remains. Corporations must act urgently to address the racial wealth gap that persists in the US economy. In this issue of the Gazette, you’ll learn more about our Latino member business leaders and how the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) is changing the business landscape in North America. Commemorations like Latin Heritage Month should give us pause to think about how financially healthy ethnic and immigrant communities make our country better. This exciting program will assist minority students in Michigan to achieve their academic and professional goals while providing the business community access to a talented pool of students from which to recruit and employ. To Apply, Students Must meet the Below Criteria: • Applicants must identify as a minority as defined by the National Minority Supplier Development Council(African American, Asian-Pacific American, Asian-Indian American, Hispanic American or Native American) • Applicants must be a legal resident in the state of Michigan with a valid driver’s license or state ID, or have graduated from a High School located in Michigan • Applicants must attend a two or four-year accredited College, University or Community College, or be a graduating senior in High School • Students must be pursuing a degree with a focus in Science, Technology, Engineering, Agriculture, Mathematics and Medicine (STEAM) and Business curriculums (Inclusive of Finance, Management, Marketing, and Supply Chain) • Applicants must have a GPA of 3.0 or higher • Displaying a willingness to contribute your time to various community activities and initiatives is strongly encouraged
