The catalyst for our grants was seeing and hearing about the tremendous impact of COVID-19 on entrepreneurs who are women. We want to dedicate some of our knowledge and time to help. While this is a business website, we are trying to help other business owners with our grant program. In support of this goal, we have disabled our normal calls to action/contact forms on grant pages and replaced our normal header images. We do not want your money. with
Grow with Google has been actively working on ways to support communities and small businesses in the United States and around the world. In 2020, Google announced the $125 million Grow with Google Small Business Fund as one way to offer support. But more specifically, as part of our effort to support the Black community, our CEO Sundar Pichai expanded the program by adding $45 million in loans to the fund and $5 million in Google.org grants with a specific focus on Black communities. This brings Google’s total support for CDFIs and the small businesses they serve to $170 million in loans and $10 million in Google.org grants. Since announcing the Grow with Google Small Business Fund, Google has worked to create a holistic program that includes low-interest loans, funding for cash grants, Ad Grants and digital skills training through Grow with Google, our economic opportunity initiative. Google will continue to work to underwrite and fund loans to additional CDFIs, which will then lend to thousands of small businesses. Through this partnership and program, we hope we can do our part to make sure small businesses remain the heart of the U.S. economy. SIDENT’S CORNER Fall is my favorite time of the year – it brings family fun, college football, and delicious food. And with Fall there are also new opportunities to celebrate and highlight the great programming our team has worked so hard to cultivate at the Michigan Minority Supplier Development Council (MMSDC). One such program is our Native American Business Initiative, that is fittingly subsidized by the country’s largest American Indian-owned business, Andra Rush of Rush Group. November is Native American Heritage Month and our great staff is honored to offer special outreach to Indigenous communities to ensure they are fully included in our work. The Native American business program was created through our Campaign for Inclusive Growth, an ambitious campaign we created in 2017 that allowed the council to step out of the box to create and test cutting-edge programming for our MBEs over a three-year period. Our focus was corporations, but we were honored when two MBEs (Andra at Rush Group and Shad Khan of Flex-n-Gate) also saw value in creating sustainable programming for other MBEs. They contributed alongside major corporations and foundations to help us shift the paradigm for MBE programming. Recognizing that minority suppliers are not growing as fast as they should to close the wealth gap within the next few centuries, we knew we had to create programs well beyond the normal training class or event. Our campaign was wildly successful and has ushered in new programs and service areas like workforce development which now helps MBEs secure more than $1M annually in training subsidies, as well as Magnify mastermind, an intensive six-month program that equipped Black and Latina entrepreneurs from 10 states to compete using EY’s 7 Drivers for Growth. In addition, our six-yearold MMSDC Academy now features research-based education and mentoring to equip corporations to run stronger supplier diversity programs, and MBEs to run stronger businesses. Together, we are shifting the paradigm and getting results. Lastly, our new and improved Matchmaker365 portal is now open. It allows corporate buyers and decision-makers to curate sourcing opportunities according to their detailed specifications, literally 24/7 and 365 days of the year. Matchmaker365 is a simple yet groundbreaking tool to support MBEs and corporations in closing the revenue gap, and registration and automated searching is a free service to our corporate members and MBEs. With a 1% increase in MBE spending each year by all corporate and MBE companies, we are confident the 333 years to reach parity can be reduced to just 15 years. Prosperity, through out of the box thinking and new strategies creates entrepreneurial success and generational wealth building that ignites economic equity. Our work continues.
