MMSDC: LEADING THROUGH THE CORONA VIRUS PANDEMIC:
ACCESS TO PPP FUNDING MMSDC was among the first to provide credible information less than 24 business hours after the CARES Act was passed. By engaging former Lt. Gov. Brian Calley who deciphered the legislation and answered questions live, MMSDC brought key access to our constituents in the early stages. By partnering with SBA and SBAM, MMSDC assisted more than 600 MBEs and connected them to lenders.
MATCHMAKER365 LEVERAGED FOR BUYERS & SELLERS At the onset of COVID-19MMSDC pivoted immediately and formed a team to connect buyers of products and services with sellers of products and services throughout the nation. MMSDC staff set up a War Room and worked with all 35 MBDA Centers throughout the country, as well as 21 NMSDC affiliates to assist MBEs, state governments, and corporations. Some MBEs reported over 100% increase in sales.
DISTRIBUTION OF PPE SUPPLIES The MMSDC responded to the call by helping minority owned businesses return to work safely amid the pandemic that crippled the world. As the lead, MMSDC coordinated an effort including multiple community non-profits. Over 1,000 kits valued at $250 each were donated by DTE for Detroit businesses. In addition, the Michigan Chinese America Coalition and Lowe’s donated products that the council continues to distribute throughout the state.
MMSDC: DRIVING GROWTH IN SPITE OF THE ECONOMIC CHALLENGES
COLLABORATIVE GROWTH INITIATIVE Our Collaborative Growth Initiative continues to make progress and yields opportunities for participating MBEs including a one MBE who competed and won a $75M opportunity for growth. We will continue to build upon this pilot program as we drive sustainable growth for all MBEs.

DEALMAKER SESSION MMSDC partnered with Kyyba Inc. to create a platform that allows Buyers to hear pitches for specific contract opportunities. Over 100 applicants resulted in 20 finalists, with 5 winners. Opportunities are valued at over $7M in contracts.
PLUG AND PLAY BY AMPLIFYD Batch Zero of our new mobility incubator in partnership with Silicon Valley’s Plug and Play has now launched with Founding Partners ranging from FCA, BorgWarner, to MEDC. Other founding partners will be announced before Batch One. The select pool of start-ups vying for the final spots includes 47% minorities and women.

MICHIGAN MINORITY PROCUREMENT CONFERENCE MMPC was moved to September via a virtual format. The programming for the event received high marks, most notably the session featuring Mrs. Harriet Michel, Dr. James Lowry, and Dr. Len Greenhalgh, true icons in minority supplier development. Not only did they provide a first-hand glimpse at history, but they challenged all of us to leverage this unique moment in time to change the face the supplier diversity so that it is truly effective in building wealth throughout minority communities.
MMSDC had another great year in certification, as we continued to certify qualified MBEs to fulfill the sourcing needs of our corporate members. We’ve certified over 63 new MBEs as of August and we have retained 95% of MBEs year over year. By leveraging technology we have increased pre-certification briefing participation by more than 50%.
MMSDC: FOSTERING GROWTH THROUGH ACCESS & SUPPORT
SECURING WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT FUNDING FOR MBES MMSDC assisted MBEs in securing $1,100,000 in grants that went directly to MBE firms. In addition, the council hosted a Virtual Career Fair to help MBEs and Corporate Members secure strong minority talent.
MMSDC CIVIC ENGAGEMENT: THE BUSINESS OF VOTING VIRTUAL DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES The MMSDC hosted more than 23 webinars for various aspects of Paycheck Protection Program to ensure MBEs had access to these much-needed fees. In addition, 13 webinars were delivered for workforce support, and an Innovation Summit hosted in partnership with Automation Alley.
Continued our popular Meet the Candidate series, attracting all candidates in major races for the U.S. Senate and U.S. House ranging from forums Senators Stabenow and Peters, Candidate John James, to Congresswomen Lawrence, Slotkin and Stevens. This forum once again allowed our constituents to converse directly with policy makers. We also compiled online resources for MBE firms to help them and their employees navigate the voting process.
BUSINESS FUNDING & RESOURCES Our primary goals during the current pandemic have been twofold. First, to protect our constituents, employees, and their families. Second, to do our best to serve the entrepreneurs and corporations we support during this unprecedented time. Our team will continue to gather funding opportunities, resources and helpful articles including recent legislation, free webinars, CDC recommendations, SBA assistance, and other helpful articles and resources. A few recent opportunities include those from Siemens Minority Business grants being awarded this month, as well as the State of Michigan Small Business Survival Grant funding being awarded by February 28, and the SBA Shuttered Venue Operator grant. In addition, one of our own MBEs, Ewie Companies has graciously created a fund to assist MBEs that need assistance with MBE certification fees. WHAT MINORITY BUSINESS OWNERS NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE PAYCHECK PROTECTION PROGRAM ROUND 2 - MMSDC PPP BRIEFING As a part of our DESIGN series, MMSDC facilitated several informational webinars to educate minority business enterprises and corporate members on topics to drive business growth. “What Minority Business Owners Need to Know About the Paycheck Protection Program Round 2” this webinar updated our minority business entrepreneurs on the latest guidance, process, and provide other tips to ensure all businesses have access to this vital supplemental funding.
UHY: LEARN HOW TO PROCESS & MAXIMIZE YOUR PAYCHECK PROTECTION PROGRAM LOAN FORGIVENESS MBEs learned the key to maximizing the PPP loan forgiveness while maintaining their operations and understanding how loan forgiveness will be impacted by workforce actions taken – both headcount and compensation actions. This webinar explored the requirements outlined in the loan forgiveness application and how the requirements should be analyzed to maximize your forgiveness while maintaining sound operations.

InFuse is a new program developed by the Michigan Minority Supplier Development Council’s Corporate Development Committee. Our goal is to promote the progression and development of corporate supplier diversity professionals with corporate leaders facilitating conversations, sharing best practices and knowledge, and collaborating new ideas; ultimately chartering the course to minority business success. This is for active corporate members. Individuals who have Supplier Diversity responsibilities are eligible to be mentored through the InFuse Program. This includes, but is not limited to: - Supplier Diversity Professionals - Buyers - Purchasing Managers - HR Professionals - Diversity & Inclusion Professionals.

Collaborative Growth Initiative (CGI) – CGI is intended to drive business growth for highperforming MBEs with the support of corporate member “champions.” We are continuing to build upon this pilot program as we drive sustainable growth for MBEs. The Phase I CGI cohorts have rated the program “effective,” and we have extended for 6 months due to COVID-19, continuing through June, 2021. Phase I Corporations include automotive OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers, and indirect supplier MBEs. Phase I participants continue to progress, including one MBE who won a $75M contract. Phase II is launching in Q2 and will include nonautomotive corporations and indirect supplier MBEs. Some corporations for Phase II have already been selected and we are currently meeting with other potential participants. We will select top MBEs for this program based on corporate member interests and supply chain needs.
Magnify Mastermind is a peer-to-peer program accelerating the Growth of Minority Women Entrepreneurs. Magnify Mastermind is the MMSDC’s latest update to Mastermind programming it began four years ago. Magnify Mastermind is designed specifically for Latina and Black Women Entrepreneurs. Business owners are curated into dynamic peer learning groups. Each group meets regularly for six (6) months to discuss challenges, devise solutions, and gain resources and insight to drive market leadership and growth.

PERSEVERANCE UNDER PRESSURE: HOW DIAMONDS ARE MADE A VIRTUAL CELEBRATION OF SUPPLIER DIVERSITY Unprecedented times did not damper the spirit of excellence that permeated throughout the 2020 ACE (Ambassadors Championing Excellence) Awards ceremony on December 3, 2020. This year’s theme, “Perseverance Under Pressure: How Diamonds are Made,” was especially befitting, as 77 ACE Ambassadors were recognized and celebrated for their extraordinary commitment to supplier diversity despite immense pressure imposed by the current pandemic and social/political landscape.
recognized some of the local individuals, companies, and corporations who surpassed their normal duties to serve their communities during the pandemic. This coveted distinction was awarded to a total of ten recipients, including one that was awarded posthumously. Desha Johnson-Hargrove - the widow of dedicated husband and father of six, Mr. Jason Hargrove - courageously accepted her husband’s posthumous recognition. Mr. Hargrove, a front-line worker who served his community as a DDOT bus driver, sadly succumbed to COVID-19 in April 2020.
The ceremony, traditionally held in-person, actually took place in a creative and dynamic virtual space in 2020. The first virtual ACE Awards ceremony was emceed by MMSDC Chairman’s Scholarship alumn Aaron McClendon, and the virtual reception and post-event afterglow were provided courtesy of the talented DJ Breeze.

ONE MMSDC SEPTEMBER 2021 TBD ONE MMSDC is designed to assist corporate personnel and community stakeholders in learning the keys to building sustainable minority supplier development programming. This event works to explain the value and impact that supplier diversity has on its community. The intended goal is to connect-the-dots and explain how working together can assist communities with the greatest needs. The program also ensures that our constituency is aware and knowledgeable of current and future initiatives supporting sustainable MBE growth and scale opportunities. The event is tentatively scheduled for September 2021, however, in the coming months, please be on the lookout for the Michigan Minority Supplier Development Council to announce the official date, time and location of 2021 ONE MMSDC. ABOUT MBE CERTIFICATION When it comes to certification, we provide our corporate members with assurance. We validate that each certified MBE is truly controlled, owned, and managed day-to-day by a qualified ethnic minority. Second, our mission is to connect qualified MBEs with our corporate members so they may gain access to opportunities within the supply chain of those companies. This, in turn, provides minority owned businesses the opportunity to grow their operations, hire more employees, and ultimately, creates wealth. Certification is available to an independent for-profit business that is majority-owned and managed day-to-day by qualified ethnic minorities. We validate the applicant through a thorough application and vetting process that includes screenings, interviews, and site visits. MBE certification is intended to validate that an applicant’s business is at least 51% controlled, owned, and managed by a qualified ethnic minority who is a U.S. citizen. In the case of the MMSDC, the business must be domiciled in the State of Michigan. Recognized ethnic minority groups are African American, Hispanic-American, Native American, Asian-Pacific American, and Asian-Indian American. As part of the review process, we consider the financial viability of the business and the potential to scale.

DAILY MANAGEMENT
The MBE must be able to operate independently without dependence on any other company or individual. Control must rest with the minority without any restrictions.
Minority ownership requires that a qualified ethnic minority owns a majority interest in the company.
The minority must oversee the day-to-day operations of the company. Although the minority may not be proficient in every area of the business, they must possess expertise in the critical operational areas for them to be able to guide the direction and management of the company.
Our ultimate goal is to connect our corporate members with MBEs capable of providing a quality product or service at a competitive cost with on-time delivery. We achieve this objective through our thorough vetting process and programs designed to serve our MBE constituents while also enhancing our corporate members’ diversity initiatives.
