At this year’s MMPC, the theme is “40 and forward - A history of resilience…A future of brilliance.” As an attendee, you will have the opportunity to hear from guest speakers that will discuss how history has changed the world we live in today, as well as having the opportunity to take a glimpse of what the future holds, through some promising start-up companies. If the past year has taught us anything, it is that resilience is the key to survival and that we must be ready and prepared for constant change, even when the change might not be something we are comfortable with.

As Chairman of the Michigan Minority Supplier Development Council (MMSDC) Board, I am proud of the dedication and commitment to supplier diversity Stellantis continues to demonstrate. Each year we look for different ways of expanding our inclusion and outreach to diverse owned businesses.

Our efforts were recognized by the National Minority Supplier Development Council for the second year in a row, as we were awarded Corporation of the Year for Class IV. I would like to thank Michelle Sourie Robinson and the MMSDC staff for their tireless efforts to bring this event to you virtually, for a second year. Adopted in 2019, the City of Grand Rapids’ Strategic Plan contains six strategic priorities that outline what we as a City strive to achieve. One of these priorities is Economic Prosperity and Affordability including the specific objective to support the creation, retention and growth of businesses.”

Through this Strategic Plan and our Equitable Economic Development and Mobility Strategic Plan, the City has committed to leveraging its resources and influence to increase contracting opportunities for Minority Business Enterprises (MBEs), Woman Business Enterprises (WBEs) and Micro Local Business Enterprises (MLBEs). Additionally, as a part of our Strategic Plan, the City is committed to increasing the number of MLBEs registered to do business with the City, and since July 1, 2020 has added 28 MLBEs to its approved list of contractors.

In June 2020, the City launched its Hyper Local Purchasing Policy Pilot to increase MLBE bid discount percentage from 3% to 9% when bidding on City opportunities. The City continues to recruit and register new MBE vendors to bid on City projects. Our Office of Equity and Engagement and the Economic Development Office continue to collaborate on programming to both increase demand for MBE and WBE contractors in private development projects, while also providing technical assistance to those firms to reduce barriers to growth and increase their capacity.

As we continue to grow and evolve at the City of Grand Rapids, I hope that this conference provides you with ample opportunity to do the same.

For 40 years our signature conference has brought together minority businesses, corporations, government agencies, and educational institutions in a forum designed to help businesses reach their highest potential. Ours is among the largest conferences of its kind, attracting industries across the globe who are vested in their MBE partners.

Our theme for 2021 is 40 Forward – A History of Resilience – a Future of Brilliance. It is fitting that the ruby, a stone of courage, represents 40th anniversaries, and it is said anyone wearing one can walk through life without fear. After a year marked by a global pandemic and global racial unrest, courage is required as we cautiously begin to reenter the world.

The events of the last year have brought into stark focus the need for parity and equity across every sector of our lives. The MMSDC has undertaken research to document growth among MBEs and what it will take to move toward that parity, by looking at companies with at least $1M in revenue. What we found is, despite a growth rate of 26% over the past five years, more than 10 percentage points ahead of majorityowned businesses, it will take minority-owned businesses 333 years to reach parity with their majority counterparts. Let that sink in, parity is more than three centuries away.

If we act decisively and purposefully, we can exponentially reduce the time needed to attain economic parity. Our second virtual conference has been curated to be both impactful and results-focused, and it is replete with resources designed to help your business reach its highest potential. We open our conference with a conversation with Dr. Bernice King, daughter of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, and CEO of the King Center. Rev. King’s dream was grounded in the fact that racial equity could not be divorced from economic inclusion.

This session focuses on employee mental health and wellbeing related to working from home. Working from home has become the new normal. Instead of commuting to the office everyday, employees have now gained more time during their workday. As a result of this, many employers have instituted flexible policies for their employees. Kenny Tubby is the President and CEO of Choctaw-Kaul Distribution Company (CK) which is a company he put together by acquiring Kaul Safety International and merging it with Choctaw Glove in 1998. The integration of glove maker with a North American safety product distribution company fit like a glove. In bringing the two companies together, production volumes increased, throughput cost was reduced and the bottom line improved for Choctaw-Kaul and our customers because we were able to be more competitive as an integrated manufacturer and distributor. The foundation of CK’s business was built on helping automotive manufacturers protect their employees from injury and illness with our gloves and safety products.

Kenny has expanded CK’s product offerings to include general industrial supplies such as maintenance, repair and operations (MRO) materials, hand and power tools, janitorial supplies and electrical and gas distribution equipment to become a comprehensive material integrator for our customers.

Andrey focuses his practice on representing employers in labor and employment law cases, as well as in business matters. He concentrates much of his practice on assisting human resource professionals tasked with drafting and implementing policies to be fully compliant with the permutations of the ADA, FLSA and FMLA.
