As Chairman of the Michigan Minority Supplier Development Council (MMSDC), it gives me great pleasure to welcome you to the very first virtual Ambassadors Champion Excellence (ACE) Awards. For more than 37 years, MMSDC’s ACE Awards have celebrated corporations and individuals for their commitment to supplier diversity and honored minority business enterprises for excellent service, value and quality. The event this evening looks a lot different than it did last year, as this year has been like no other. Our honorees have faced unspeakable challenges and were forced to innovate and re-think their day to day business operations and personal lives. I applaud the hard work and dedication that all of these amazing leaders and corporations have done in order to keep the lights on, while continuing to support the community and diversity businesses as a whole. Their accomplishments are inspiring and it is wonderful that we can celebrate with them tonight. I would like to thank Michelle, the board and the MMSDC staff for their steadfast commitment to pivot time and time again in order to bring relevant and timely education and content to all of our members. ear MMSDC Corporate Members, Certified MBEs, Sponsors, and Participants, On behalf of the Michigan Minority Supplier Development Council, our Board of Directors, Staff and the Signature Events Committee, it is my great pleasure to welcome you to the 2020 Virtual ACE Awards.
2020 has certainly been a year unlike any other with the world facing unprecedented issues, previously unthinkable in our lifetime, brought on by a global pandemic. The long-simmering racial divide in our country then erupted with the killing of George Floyd, forcing a mostly captive global audience to engage on issues of race with new fervor. It was as if blinders had suddenly been removed for many and the world could see more clearly the far-reaching impact of systemic racism - no one truly wins when everyone isn’t fully included. The fact is all businesses have been impacted and once again, minority-owned firms face a disproportionate crisis with more than 40% at risk of closure. Marketing without sustainable results must no longer be tolerated in minority supplier development. Instead, we must all seriously assess the legacy WE are creating. At last year’s ACE Awards you may recall we honored legends who had literally changed the face of minority supplier development because they leveraged their positions of influence – they got uncomfortable, took some risks, deployed unconventional approaches, ruffled some feathers …. and in the process they made an indelible impact for their companies and their communities. In fact, you and I still enjoy the fruits of their labor more than 20 years later as most of our largest suppliers today can be traced back to the key courageous corporate leaders who spoke up and took a chance decades ago. So, I ask again, What legacy are WE creating? Our work is more critical than ever and it is against this backdrop that we come to recognize and celebrate those who have worked to deliver quality products and services, and those who have shown commitment to minority supplier development through their advocacy, mentorship, and purchasing power. Whatever your role – I ask you to press in, challenge yourself and do MORE! May tonight inspire you as an entrepreneur, corporate advocate or executive. As is our custom, tonight we will celebrate the previous year’s accomplishments of individuals and companies. In addition to celebrating these 2019 successes and in light of all that has transpired in 2020, the prestigious President’s Award, our organization’s highest individual honor is dedicated to the many individuals, organizations, or companies that have significantly impacted our communities during the 2020 pandemic. A special 2020 Community Impact Award has also been created to highlight 10 outstanding community leaders. Yes, these are unprecedented times. While we cannot be together in person, we can continue to celebrate, elevate, and commemorate, not the challenges, but the resilience that is inherent in each of us. Like diamonds, we are resilient and 2020 has reminded us that we don’t just expect better times; together, WE will create them. Her daughter is a physician, and when COVID hit and there was a shortage in masks, Mrs. Berry-Lee learned how to make them, and she began making masks for her daughters’ entire practice then continued to support others in need.” - Chareese Williams

“During the early days of COVID there was a shortage of masks for Doctors and nurses in the hospitals. Kevin designed, 3D printed and sourced supplies to donate 160 N95 like masks. These were donated to Beaumont, St. Josephs, and Ascension hospitals throughout SE Michigan. After schools started, Kevin received a notice from several middle and high school teachers that there was a big concern with students being able to play the flute in light of covid-19. Working with another group, he designed a protector that significantly reduces the spread of droplets while playing the flute. Kevin printed, assembled, and distributed 120 sets of flute protectors for local students.” - Brian Moore
