SCHOLARSHIPS AND GRANTS

GRADUATION SPEAKER

JAMES L. FROHMADER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIPS

Usually awarded to top students, male or female, who will continue training for the preaching or teaching ministry. Given in memory of James Frohmader, a 1977 MLS graduate who was enrolled at Northwestern College but died as a result of an accident at the Michigan State Track Meet.

PRESIDENTIAL ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT

CONRAD I. FREY MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Usually awarded to a student based on GPA who will continue training for the preaching or teaching ministry. This grant is given in memory of Rev. Conrad Frey, the second president of MLS. Pastor Frey also served as president of Dr. Martin Luther College.

MARTIN R. TOEPEL MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Usually awarded to a student based on GPA who will continue training for the preaching or teaching ministry. This grant is given in memory of Rev. Martin Toepel, the third president of MLS.

O. J. R. HOENECKE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Usually awarded to a student based on GPA who will continue training for the preaching or teaching ministry. This grant is given in memory of Rev. Otto Hoenecke, the first president of MLS.

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE

ADOLF SAUER MEMORIAL GRANT

Awarded to a student who will continue training for the preaching or teaching ministry. This grant is given in memory of Adolf Sauer, who taught science and religion at MLS.

CHUCK BEACH SCHOLARSHIP

Charles “Chuck” Beach served as the head of maintenance at MLS for more than 40 years. Though Chuck was not a called worker, he was a minister in the truest sense of the word. This scholarship was established by his family and friends to honor Chuck’s many years of faithful service. It is awarded to a graduating senior (or seniors) who exemplifies Chuck’s selfless, servant attitude and will be attending MLC to prepare for the public ministry.

FRED AND ARLENE WENZEL MEMORIAL GRANT

Ron Wenzel’s appreciation and enjoyment of music in the church led him to establish this grant in memory of his parents. Awarded to students who have demonstrated an interest in music and will be continuing their training for the teaching or preaching ministry.

GEORGE W. SCHMIEGE SCHOLARSHIP

The George W. Schmiege scholarship was established by his family in honor of the many hours he spent volunteering at his WELS church and at MLS. During his lifetime he generously supported students preparing for the ministry. This scholarship is awarded to a student who intends to continue training for the preaching ministry.

HANNAH M. KIETA MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Hannah Kieta was a member of the MLS class of 2013. This scholarship was established in 2019 by friends and family to honor her memory. It will be awarded to an MLS senior who has successfully completed at least four semesters of German and who intends to continue studying German at MLC. If no students are available who meet the criteria for German, it may be awarded to a senior who has successfully completed at least four semesters of Latin and who intends to continue studying Latin at MLC.

LLOYD & EDITH THOMPSON GRANT

This grant is given in honor of Coach Lloyd Thompson and his wife, Edith. It was established by family, friends, and colleagues on the occasion of Lloyd’s 80th birthday. Awarded to students who will continue training for the preaching ministry.

MAXINE L. HENSLER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

This grant is given in memory of Maxine Hensler by her husband Dale Hensler. Dale has a strong desire to help MLS students and encourage them to continue their training for the preaching or teaching ministry at MLC.

MLMH KORTH MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

The distribution shall be split between male students currently enrolled at MLS for the upcoming year as a sophomore (1 scholarship); junior (1 scholarship); senior (1 scholarship) with interest in the pastoral ministry and to a male senior graduate enrolled at MLC and continuing training for the pastoral ministry. These scholarships will be given as an encouragement to young men and their families to continue training for the full time pastoral ministry. These young men should also show gifts for serving the elderly whom they will shepherd upon the completion of their studies.

MLS FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP

This scholarship fund is available for those who wish to contribute to scholarships for graduating seniors but for whom no named endowed scholarship exists. Scholarship distributions will be given to one or more graduating MLS students who are continuing their studies at MLC.

PASTOR JOHN F AND RUTH BRENNER MEMORIAL GRANT

This grant is given in memory of Pastor and Mrs. Brenner to a student who will continue training for the preaching or teaching ministry. Recipient will be one who has by word and example encouraged fellow students toward the ministry.

PROF. ARMIN SCHULTZ MEMORIAL ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP

Established by the family of Prof. Schultz for students who intend to continue training for the preaching or teaching ministry. Prof. Schultz served at MLS from the time he was called as a tutor in 1938 until his retirement in 1974. During this time he taught numerous subjects; including shorthand, Geometry, and German. The county girls’ track meet was named in his honor. He served as athletic director and coached track, cross-country, baseball, and basketball. He also served as vice president, and acting president. This scholarship will be awarded to a graduating MLS senior to be applied toward his or her tuition at MLC.

RAY & HELENE VASOLD GRANT

This grant is given by the Vasold family in honor of Mr. and Mrs. Ray Vasold, who volunteered countless hours to MLS and other agencies of Lutheran education since the 1960s. Awarded to students who will continue training for the preaching or teaching ministry.

REV. STEPHEN L. KORTH MEMORIAL CANTATE DEO GRANT

Established by the Saginaw Valley Lutheran Chorale. This grant recognizes students who have actively proclaimed God’s Word through music while at MLS and who have the potential to serve the Lord’s Church with his or her musical gifts.

REV. W. D. KETURAKAT MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

This grant is given in memory of Rev. William D. Keturakat, who served in the WELS from 1910 until 1945, by his son Bud Keturakat. Awarded to students who will continue training for the preaching or teaching ministry.

ROLAND & ESTHER BODE GRANT

This grant is given in memory of Mr. & Mrs. Bode, both Dr. Martin Luther College graduates, by their family. Mr. Bode taught Christian day school for 24 years. He worked for AAL, directed area choirs, and played organ at local congregations. He also served as office manager at LACE for 12 years in his retirement. Awarded to students who will continue training for the preaching or teaching ministry.

SCHREINER FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP FUND

The distribution shall be given to student/s graduating from MLS and attending MLC. Priority shall be given to student/s who are members of St. Paul Ev. Lutheran Church in Saginaw, Michigan. If no student/s meet that criteria, it may be awarded to any MLS graduate who is attending MLC.

SPAUDE/THOMFORD MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

This endowed scholarship was established in memory of longtime MLS professor, Rev. Jerome Spuude, and James & Arlene Thomford. The annual distribution is awarded to an MLS senior who is continuing his studies at MLC in the pre-seminary program.

SUSAN POST MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

This grant is given in memory of Susan Post who served on the MLS campus for 31 years. During her years of service she coached softball and taught English & Physical Education. She ended her service at MLS by serving as Dean of Women. Awarded to students who will continue training for the preaching or teaching ministry.

TRINITY LUTHERAN CHURCH OF ELKTON SCHOLARSHIP

The Trinity Lutheran Church of Elkton, MI Scholarship was established in 2022 in thanksgiving to God for the 130 years of grace serving the Elkton community. After the difficult decision was made to discontinue the ministry in Elkton, the remaining congregation members wanted to continue to support future ministers of the gospel by establishing this scholarship. This scholarship is to a student who intends to continue training for the teaching of preaching ministry.

RECOGNITION AWARD

THE ROBERT KASCHINSKE DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD

This award recognizes a senior boy and senior girl who returned to MLS the greatest measure of “selfless service” while they were students. Both recipients receive a plaque. If the selected students are enrolled at MLC, a monetary graduation grant will also be received.
