Hello Fellow Wolverines We are very excited for the 2017 SWE/TBP Career Fair and hope you are too! Over 350 companies will be in attendance at this year’s fair, waiting to talk to you. And with so many talented Wolverines looking for jobs, we are confident that it will be a success.

This is the 4th edition of the Resource Guide, and our goal is to provide you with an all-in-one guide including dates of corporate information sessions and workshops, advice, and tips to help you make the most of our career fair. This guide contains information from recruiters, the Engineering Resource Center, and fellow students. We hope this guide is helpful in making your career fair experience more enjoyable and successful.

The weeks prior to the fair can be stressful and overwhelming. Right now you are probably cleaning up your resume, editing your cover letter, and rehearsing your elevator speech. We know exactly how you feel, as we are also looking for jobs. However, we are enthusiastic about the fair and the attending companies, and excited for the job opportunities that they bring. These recruiters have traveled from all over the country and are very eager to hire Michigan engineers like you, so go out there and find your dream job!

Organizing and directing the 33rd Annual SWE/TBP Career Fair has been an amazing experience and we wish you the best of luck at the fair. Remember that as a Michigan engineer, you have endless opportunities, and whatever it is you want to do: The sky is the limit!

Networking for the Career Fair Receptions Receptions are great, informal networking events that happen Sunday and Monday evening the week of career fair. This is the best place to build a connection with recruiters in an environment with less pressure and no resumes. The next day, the recruiters will recognize you and probably smile when they see a familiar face. Talk to recruiters about their company, position, job, college background, hobbies, pets, anything to show you are interested in speaking with them and want to learn about their company.

As a bonus you can register for career fair there and avoid the line the next morning!

Corporate Information Sessions Many student organizations host corporate information sessions around the time of the career fair.

At the information sessions, companies will often give a short presentation on their company and what type of opportunities they have for students. There is generally a question and answer session and some companies have more interactive sessions with games such as jeopardy. There is often food at these sessions and they are a great way to learn more about the companies you are interested in and a chance to talk to recruiters again. Some of the corporate information sessions are on the next page. These sessions are subject to change so check out the calendar on our website, umcareerfair.org, closer to the career fair for updated information.

Advice for the Big Day Before Arriving at Career Fair Arriving at the career fair feeling confident and prepared starts long before you wake up that morning.

Here is a checklist of things to do in the weeks leading up to career fair: Update your resume and get it reviewed by the ECRC or a company Update your LinkedIn profile, make sure to include what you did this summer Create an account on ENGenius.Jobs, many companies will schedule interviews through here Research companies thoroughly and make a list with the companies you want to talk to most Attend career fair prep workshops, the ECRC and companies host many of these in the weeks leading up to career fair about elevator pitches, interviewing, resumes, and more Apply online to companies before you speak with them. This will show the recruiters you are eager to work with their company. Even if you just begin the application beforehand, it will give you a chance to ask questions about it and submit it after Highlight a few companies that you are extremely interested in, and start reading news articles or current events regarding the company. Recruiters will find it very impressive that you are aware of the recent merger of Company ABC or the new plant opening of Company XYZ

Elevator Pitch Guidelines Keep it short.

It should only be 30 to 60 seconds. Make sure to include your name, year, and major.

Follow these four topics to pull it all together:

State why you want to work there and what you want to gain.

Career Fair Dress Code It is important to make a good first impression on employers. Dressing professionally is a great way to accomplish this. Here are some tips on how to dress for the career fair.

Clothes Wear a business suit in a conservative color (navy, gray, or black) For Men: wear a dress shirt and tie For Women: blouse that complements the suit; neckline no lower than collarbone; skirt hem should be no more than two inches above the knee All clothes should be clean and pressed

Shoes For Men: wing tips or loafers with dark socks For Women: low/medium heels or flats

Hair Off your face Clean and styled Facial hair should be groomed

Accessories Wear minimal jewelry Only one pair of earrings Use a good quality portfolio or briefcase to hold papers Cell phones should be away and silent “Wear

comfortable shoes! You'll be on your feet for hours.

General Tips for Talking to Companies Talk to companies you are not extremely interested in first to shake your nerves.You will start realizing a pattern of what works for you in getting your point across. However, don’t wait too long to speak to companies you are very interested in, because they will often give out next day interviews to some of the first students they speak with.

BE PATIENT. Waiting in line can be tiring and boring. Make the most of that time. Rehearse your elevator pitch or look up more information on the company you are about to talk to. Try to be proactive even in your downtime!

Send follow-up thank-you emails to the recruiters that you speak with. This is a simple act of professional kindness and gratitude that speaks volumes for your character.

Interview Tips Talk to friends about the types of interview questions they have had in the past. If you feel comfortable with a friend, have him/her ask you some questions. You don’t even have to answer, but take notes on how you would answer the questions. Here is a list of some of the most common interview questions that interviewers ask. Prepare yourself by thinking of how you would answer these beforehand.

Why are you interested in working for our company?

Where do you see yourself in 5 years? 10 years?

Tell me about a time you had a conflict with a peer/co-worker. How was this resolved?

When have you made a mistake and how did you react?

How do you handle pressure?

Tell me about your leadership experiences.

What are your strengths and weaknesses?

What questions do you have for me?

Sites like Glassdoor.com can be a great resource to learn about companies and their interview techniques.

Then you will know if you should be expecting a technical or behavioral interview and you can prepare accordingly.

Companies can ask you curve-ball questions that you aren’t ready for. Remember, DON’T PANIC. Most of the time they are just trying to see your thought process. Ask questions if necessary before answering. At the end of the interview don’t be afraid to ask about the next steps in the company’s hiring process. It gives you peace of mind in terms of when you will hear back about the job, and further shows your interest to the interviewer!
