The Un iver sit y of Michiga n will of fer more in-person classes t his fa ll t ha n prev iously expected as st udent vaccination rates climb a nd public hea lt h rest rict ions expire. 93% of underg raduate classes are expected to be fully in person, 5% hybrid a nd 2% f ully remote, according to a Tuesday morning ema il f rom U-M President Ma rk Schlissel to the ca mpus c o m m u n i t y. P r e v i o u s l y, t h e Un iver sit y had pla n ned for la rge lect ures to be f ully remote by default. If t he st udent body hits a 75% self-repor ted COV I D -

19 vaccination rate a nd COV I D -19 ca ses on ca mpu s r e m a i n l o w, t h e U n i v e r s i t y will lif t the current facecovering requirement for vaccinated st udents in cla ssrooms. 55% of st udent s have self-repor ted their f u l l COV I D -19 vacci nat ion status, according to a new dashboa rd on the UM COV I D -19 data website. A d d i t i o n a l l y, i n i t i a l d a t a on the dashboa rd shows zero new COV I D -19 ca ses on ca mpus out of over 600 tests in t he pa st week, a f irst since t he pa ndemic began. On the heels of this m i lestone, t he Un iver sit y is strongly encourag ing st udent s to cont i nue selfrepor ting t heir vaccination stat us as soon as they

St udent prizes include U-M spor t ing event t ickets, a Ba r nes & Noble tex tbook schola rship, farmers ma rket tokens a nd Blue Bucks, Schlissel w rote in his email. “I tha nk ever yone in our communit y who has

repor ted t heir vaccination information to the u n i v e r s i t y, ” Schlissel w rote. “This information is helping us hone our fa ll pla ns for a n in-person experience, a nd t he more people who sha re t heir information, t he bet ter we c a n pla n .” The Un iver sit y i s look i ng for wa rd to a positive a nd mostly in-person fall s e m e s t e r, w i t h d o r m s a n d dining ha lls at nea rly f ull c a p a c i t y. Schlissel also added t hat t he Un iver sit y w ill continue to monitor t he Delt a COV I D -19 va r ia nt d u r i n g t h e f a l l s e m e s t e r, but sa id Michiga n Medicine research indicates that c u r rent ly approved COV I D 19 vaccines protect aga inst new va ria nts.
