And as Jones looked out over the Pigeon River Valley, all he saw were the tops of trees, a green canopy all the way to the horizon. Jones told owner Harry Melling to call the course Treetops. The first five holes are fairly level with the entrance road from Gaylord. Then you get to the sixth tee and it's Wow! It is, as the state's TV brag spots go, Pure Michigan. The resort already had a name, Sylvan Glen and the Jackson businessman and his family spent ski vacations there for years. So with Rick Smith, in his first head professional job, they named the course “The Masterpiece” in honor of the world's No. 1 post-war golf course architect. But Treetops was too good a name to not get top billing. After all, everyone was calling it Treetops so Sylvan quietly was dropped. The whole complex, with four 18 hole courses plus the nine hole Threetops par 3, became Treetops Resort. The course had its grand opening on July 16, 1987 and Director of Golf Kevin McKinley said the 25th will be a season-long celebration. On the 25th of each month, April to September, the greens fee, with cart, will be $25 on the Masterpiece. The 25th isn't the only thing on the Treetops calendar. McKinley came up with a Treetops Cup idea two years ago, a Ryder Cup-style match pitting the United States versus Canada and it has grown as though it was on steroids. “We had 16 players in 2009,” McKinley said, 10 Americans and six Canadians. To even it up, two fellows from Columbus, Ohio, said they'd play for Canada. It's three matches, bestball and alternate P. 2

shot with two man teams, like the Ryder Cup, and then singles on Sunday. “Everyone had such a good time that they told their buddies and we had 68 players last year and the U.S. won again. And the two guys from Columbus said they wanted to stick with their Canadian friends so they've become honorary Canadians. “I'm expecting 100 this year (July 8-10) and we will cap it at that. The way it's grown I think I'll only have 30 open spots because everyone from last year said they'd be back. And the Canadians said they were going to host the pairings reception with Canadian beer. Participants have to show McKinley a handicap card and he said he matches similar handicaps. The charge is $340 for two nights lodging, three rounds of match play, two “uniform” shirts and a cap, the pairing reception on Friday and a group dinner. McKinley has a silver trophy, somewhat similar to the Ryder Cup, and figures he's going to need a base to put it on because all the winning team members' names will be engraved each year. He may wind up with a cup that's more like the Stanley Cup with all the players' names. But wait, through the magic of Internet television you can revisit some of those moments. Don't you just love it? Click on to http://michigangolfer.tv/archives.html and enjoy these fine and informative shows. Arcadia Bluffs Arcadia Bluffs, GM, Bill Shriver discusses the new lodging now available at the resort. *** Michigan Cup Two of Michigan golf's emerging instructional stars are Brian O'Neill of Boyne and Jason Guss of The Otsego Club. As stated, O'Neill's mentor was the legendary Jim Flick, while Guss studied under Rick Smith. The two have decided to test each other's rising new student stars, by establishing The Michigan Cup. The Michigan Cup will be targeted toward junior golfers and run under a Ryder Cup format. The first match will be on the Heather course at Boyne Highlands in August. *** Bucks Run Jon Conklin, head golf professional at Bucks Run, is now in his third year. The Cyber-Geezer discusses Facebook with Al Lynch of Club Cars/ *** GAM The 100th Anniversary of the Michigan Amateur With the absence of any major tournaments in Michigan this year, the one tournament that has probably the most cache is the 100th Anniversary of the Michigan Amateur. Jack Berry chats with GAM COO, David Graham about the upcoming tournament and festivities. *** Golf or Take in the Spa at GTR&S Kris Runkle was doing a brisk business at her booth as golfers and spa goers alike were checking out the packages available this year at Grand Traverse Resort & Spa. Runkle has been with GTR&S for years and has one of the top Michigan golf products to sell. She works mostly with corporations and associations. *** Island Resort Championship - Sweetgrasss Oops, I meant to say that aside from the Island Resort Championship, that is highlighted by the return of the Future's Tour, the 100th Michigan Amateur might be the top tournament in Michigan. Certainly, the top professional tournament will be held at the relatively new Sweetgrass course in Harris. Sweetgrass head professional, Dave Douglas, talked with Jack Berry, about the first of a three year commitment for the event. *** LochenHeath Golf Club LochenHeath is Back and Beautiful - New LochenHeath GM, Mike Husby, has landed the job of his life with the purchase of this northern gem. Husby has always drawn golfers to whatever course he represents, he should be even more successful

have developed the Fabulous Fifties, The Amazing Race, The Treetops Cup and the Patriot Golf Tournament for the resort. While the resort benefits from these events, the community does as well as portions of the proceeds are earmarked for a variety of charities that benefit from these activities. This is a fun event and the place was jumping this past weekend. http://glsp.com/treetops ================================================================================= GOLF PROFESSIONAL OF THE YEAR, FRANK MCAULIFFE, JOINS KENDALL ACADEMY AT MILES OF GOLF ================================================================================= Two of the Michigan PGA’s top award-winners for 2010 are joining forces at Kendall Academy in Ann Arbor, MI, in 2011. Longtime head pro Frank McAuliffe, the 2010 Golf Professional of the Year, is joining the acclaimed instructional team of Kendall Academy headed by Dave Kendall, the 2010 Horton Smith Award recipient. After 29 years at Ann Arbor Country Club, McAuliffe is excited about continuing his passion and commitment for golf and teaching at Kendall Academy. “To be able to continue what I love to do— teach and coach golf—is a tremendous opportunity,” said McAuliffe, a 16-year veteran as the boy’s golf coach for Dexter High School as well as the new men’s and women’s golf coach for Marygrove College in Detroit. “Knowing Dave for a long time and realizing what a top-notch facility Kendall Academy at Miles of Golf represents, I couldn’t be more thrilled,” said McAuliffe. “Kendall Academy is known for its great teachers who really care about their students and I’m honored to be joining the team.” "Having someone of Frank's stature and experience be a part of Kendall Academy is a huge plus for all involved and most especially for area golfers," said Kendall, a two-time Michigan PGA Teacher of the Year. "In the Michigan Section where he serves on the Board of Directors, Frank is widely respected not only as a golf professional and player but also as an outstanding teacher and coach.” While at Ann Arbor CC, McAuliffe was lauded for exemplary membership service while also giving back to the PGA Section via numerous leadership positions and to the local community in his coaching and volunteer stints. “I want to thank the membership of Ann Arbor CC for its support and kindness shown to not only me but my entire family over those many years,” said McAuliffe. “I will always be indebted to the club for giving me my first head golf professional start.” In addition to his teaching and coaching stature, McAuliffe is an accomplished player. Three times with partner Jeff Gniewek, McAuliffe won the prestigious Shanty Creek Classic but he’s most proud of another team victory at the 2007 Michigan PGA State Pro-Am at Boyne Highlands. There he partnered with his son Frank IV, a standout player for Oakland University, and the duo took home the trophy for the 36-hole better-ball event.

In regard to his teaching philosophy, McAuliffe believes fundamentals govern every golfer’s game. “But not everyone can swing the club the same way, so it’s my job to evaluate and work with the player and see what he or she can do with it,” said McAuliffe. “I’m also a proponent of listening to and assessing a player’s goals and aspirations. A player who wants to improve but who can only practice once a week is much different than a high school or college player wanting to get to the next competitive level.” Offering year-round instruction, Kendall Academy is located at Miles of Golf, a comprehensive golf operation offering a retail store, practice and teaching facility, and club-fitting center. (Another Kendall Academy location is at the Great Lakes Golf Center in Auburn Hills.) Miles of Golf is located at 3113 Carpenter Road in Ypsilanti, just 1.5 miles northeast of the US-23/I-94 interchange. While at the various clubs throughout his career, he has amassed the knowledge of all facets of clubs operations from golf course maintenance to food and beverage. Having been with Troon for over 3 years, he brings with him a commitment to service excellence and an uncompromising attention to detail which aids in delivering a member and guest experience that he hopes will exceed expectations. Top 10 Things Golf Does Not Need in 2011 - Brad Shelton The 2011 Tour of the Year - LPGA - Bill Shelton Remember, April 1, no foolin' ================================== MINZEY'S MUSINGS: BRITISH HUMOR ================================== ALERTS TO THREATS IN 2011 EUROPE BY JOHN CLEESE The English are feeling the pinch in relation to recent terrorist threats and have therefore raised their security level from "Miffed" to "Peeved." Soon, though, security levels may beraised yet again to "Irritated" or even "A Bit Cross." The English have not been "A Bit Cross" since the blitz in 1940 when tea supplies nearly ran out. Terrorists have been re-categorized from "Tiresome" to "A Bloody Nuisance." The last time the British issued a "Bloody Nuisance" warning level was in 1588, when threatened by the Spanish Armada. The Scots have raised their threat level from "Pissed Off" to "Let's get the Bastards." They don't have any other levels. This is the reason they have been used on the front line of the British army for the last 300 years. The French government announced yesterday that it has raised its terror alert level from "Run" to "Hide." The only two higher levels in France are "Collaborate" and "Surrender." The rise was precipitated by a recent fire that destroyed France 's white flag factory, effectively paralyzing the country's military capability. Italy has increased the alert level from "Shout Loudly and Excitedly" to "Elaborate Military Posturing." Two more levels remain: "Ineffective Combat Operations" and "Change Sides." The Germans have increased their alert state from "Disdainful Arrogance" to "Dress in Uniform and Sing Marching Songs." They also have two higher levels: "Invade a Neighbour" and "Lose." Belgians, on the other hand, are all on holiday as usual; the only threat they are worried about is NATO pulling out of Brussels . The Spanish are all excited to see their new submarines ready to deploy. These beautifully designed subs have glass bottoms so the new Spanish navy can get a really good look at the old Spanish navy. Australia , meanwhile, has raised its security level from "No worries" to "She'll be alright, Mate." Two more escalation levels remain: "Crikey! I think we'll need to cancel the barbie this weekend!" and "The barbie is canceled." So far no situation has ever warranted use of the final escalation level. -- John Cleese - British writer, actor and tall person P. 16
