The 2013 National Health Care Team Challenge (HCTC) was held on June 14 in Vancouver, BC. This interprofessional event promotes teamwork and collaboration amongst students across Canada. The challenge is designed to provide students with the opportunity to “walk the talk” in a real-life clinical setting, while facilitating the development of student leaders in interprofessional education. Students gain exposure to a variety of core values and competencies, including communication and reflection skills, while developing a mutual respect, openness to trust, and willingness to collaborate with others.
Each student team is provided with the same case to work on, with the goal of developing a collaborative interprofessional patient/client-centred plan of management. On the day of the event, student teams present their plans to an audience of clinicians, academics, community members, and other students, and are judged on both the quality of the management plan and level of team collaboration. Members of Michener’s team, The Michener Interprofessional Applied Health Students’ Association (TMIAHSA), reflected on this year’s experience: continued on page 2
