Clinical education is central to all of Michener’s full-time and part-time programs. With clinical partners located across Canada, you’ll gain hands-on, experiential training everywhere from academic and community hospitals to private laboratories, clinics and community health centres. Working under the guidance of clinical supervisors and educators, you’ll have the opportunity to interact directly with patients, and use the latest diagnostic and patient care equipment and technology that you’ll encounter in the field.

hen they were needed most, Michener respiratory therapy students made the leap from their clinical placements and quickly entered the workforce at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.

For Eba Basith, completing her clinical year at North York General Hospital during the pandemic was physically and mentally challenging, but it was also a rewarding learning opportunity amid highly stressful conditions.

“After this, I know we will come out being able to handle any situation thrown at us,” she says.

“Michener provided me with many opportunities to use my theoretical knowledge of respiratory therapy in a hands-on environment,” adds Alexandra Connolly, who completed her clinical training at St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto before joining the respiratory therapy teams there and at Toronto General Hospital.

“I see beauty in the respiratory therapy and multidisciplinary teams that I am a part of,” she says.

“The solidarity of the healthcare community has been awe-inspiring.”

Our Credent The Michener Institute has a variety of pathways for full-time or part-time degrees, diplomas and certificates across our program offerings.

MASTER’S DEGREE (full-time, two years) Michener offers the first and the only Master’s of Science degree program in Cardiovascular Perfusion. Entry to this program requires completion of a bachelor’s degree for admission and provides pathways towards doctoral-level programs.

tials Helping Michener students realize their potential W ith multiple postsecondary and graduate degrees under her belt, and most recently an Advanced Diploma in Respiratory Therapy, some would call Kaitlyn Evers a lifelong learner.

Kaitlyn initially pursued a career in teaching, but after an intense reconstructive knee surgery in 2017, she took an interest in the anatomical and physiological side of her rehabilitation. She decided to complete a degree in kinesiology, where she took an interest in disease states — what she describes as the “what goes wrong and why” aspect of healthcare.

Kaitlyn started to look into other programs where she could pursue this interest, which brought her to the Respiratory Therapy program at Michener.

“By pursuing healthcare, I am now in a position where I must do everything in my power to help my patients,” she says.

“By doing so, I finally feel that my career choice, personality and aspirations are more aligned.”

Kaitlyn was the 2023 recipient of the Dr. Diana Michener Schatz Scholarship. This award is presented to a student who has undertaken a career transition while achieving academic excellence, exemplifying innovative thinking in their chosen applied health profession and contributing to the betterment of the Michener community.

“Receiving this award shows that the hard work I’ve put in and the many late nights studying were beneficial to my success. I’m humbled to receive this award and endlessly grateful for the recognition.”

DIPLOMA (full-time or part-time, two years) Like our advanced diploma programs, Michener’s diploma programs offers hands-on experience in clinical settings on top of in-class learning. Students in diploma programs may opt to complete the programs on a full-time or part-time basis. Courses taken from our diploma program may offer pathways towards the advanced diploma programs.

GRADUATE CERTIFICATE (part-time, one and a half or two years) Graduate certificates programs at Michener offer healthcare professionals the ability to pursue specializations in a related discipline to their field of practice.

Entry to the graduate certificate programs require completion of post-secondary education and work experience in select regulated healthcare professions.

CERTIFICATE (part-time, one semester or more) Our Continuing Education certificate programs caters to healthcare professionals who would like to expand their skills and upgrade their knowledge.

A one-of-a-kind program directly into MRI Using their knowledge of anatomy, physiology and pathology — along with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) physics and methods — MRI technologists operate MRI scanners to create images of patients’ bodies, which physicians use as an aid for the diagnosis of injury and disease.

Michener’s MRI 1st Discipline program is a full-time, hybrid program open to students directly out of high school. You’ll be trained to provide effective and compassionate care for patients while carrying out diagnostic medical imaging procedures. Through this program, you’ll be encouraged to develop the necessary technical, critical-thinking and problem-solving skills to complete and adapt MRI procedures based on a patient’s medical condition.

Medical Science Collaborative, hands-on learning within a simulated clinical lab Medical laboratory technologists are central to the health system. Often working behind the scenes, they perform lab analyses and complex procedures on tissue specimens, blood samples and other body fluids. These lab results are then used by physicians to diagnose and treat patients, and monitor and prevent disease.

Michener’s labs are outfitted with the latest equipment, so you’ll learn on a variety of automated lab analyzers, highquality microscopes, double and five-headed microscopes and augmented digital technology.

From behind the scenes to the spotlight P rior to 2020, few people knew what PCR tests were. But following the COVID-19 pandemic, they’ve put the work of laboratory professionals like Dean Maxwell in the spotlight.

A 1997 graduate of Michener’s Medical Laboratory Science program, Dean leads the COVID-19 team and all other viral genetic testing as Laboratory Manager for Public Health Ontario.

“I started my current role in February 2020 – just as the pandemic was beginning,” says Dean. “At first we had a team of 20, and in six months it grew to a team of 200 dedicated lab professionals.”

Between December 2020 and February 2021, they were processing as many as 25,000 PCR tests a day. In total, the team has processed more than five million diagnostic tests for COVID-19.

Aside from COVID-19, Dean and his team test for numerous viruses and respond to different kinds of outbreaks regularly. From monkeypox and the flu to measles and mumps, they test for anything that’s emerging and act quickly with the lab response.

Dean knows that his unique professional experience plus balancing high demands on the job started with his Michener education: “Michener has been so valuable for me over the years. Going through that program helped me prepare right at the beginning of my career. I wouldn’t be able to lead my team today without all the collaboration in my program.”

Respirato Therapy Contribute to a world where your patients can breathe easier Respiratory therapists support patients whose ability to breathe has been compromised due to trauma or acute care needs, or because of disease and other health conditions. As a respiratory therapist, you’ll be part of a large, interdisciplinary health team that provides life-saving care to patients during critical illness or injury, through to rehabilitation.

Extending the frontlines beyond hospitals W

hen we think about respiratory therapists during the COVID-19 pandemic, we might imagine ICUs at capacity with COVID patients. But Chelsea Mott (Respiratory Therapy 2019) the respiratory therapy frontlines extend beyond just hospitals — these specialized healthcare workers are often in the community assessing patients in their homes.

Chelsea Mott is one of those respiratory therapists. A 2019 grad of the Michener Respiratory Therapy program, Chelsea travels to patients’ homes where she performs complex care such as oxygen therapy, tracheostomy tube changes and assessing patients on ventilators.

“A lot of patients want to be out of the hospital and at home,” Chelsea says.

“We’re trying to keep patients in their community.”

During the pandemic, the ability to assess patients at home was an essential way to manage hospital capacity and open up beds for patients who needed full-time critical care.

“We were able to take over the care for these patients and keep the workflow moving for the doctors. I worked with COVID patients who had been discharged from the hospital but still needed oxygen, and it was so clear that they appreciated being in their own home.”

As a graduate during the pandemic, Chelsea had to navigate her new role quickly, but she was prepared to take it on. “Our Michener instructors always said that we are all colleagues,” she recalls. “Our situation in COVID takes a team effort, and my program really emphasized how important it is to work together across teams. I’ve had to jump into new teams in COVID, but I felt confident doing it.”

Cardiova Perfusio Be the heart — and lungs — of the operating room As a cardiovascular perfusionist, you’ll control the equipment that manages heart and lung function of patients in the operating room. From open-heart surgeries to lung transplants, you’ll work with surgeons, anesthesiologist and nurses on an interprofessional operating room team.

The only Master’s level Cardiovascular Perfusion program offered in Canada, this program includes robust training on state-of-the-art heart-lung machines you’ll encounter in the operating room, principles of pharmacology and hemotherapy, as well as applied research opportunities through the completion of a capstone project.

Cardiovascular Perfusionists work in hospitals that have cardiac surgery programs. The majority of their time is spent in the cardiac operating room, but they also work in other critical care areas such as the ICU and Cath Lab. Supporting fellow technologists — halfway around the world M

ichener alumni are known for their leadership, but stepping up for fellow healthcare workers halfway across the globe is exceptional, even by Michener’s high standards.

Ken Pui was part of the first graduating class of Michener’s MRI program in 1999 and he now works as the MRI Charge Technologist at Scarborough Health Network. In 2016, he received a call from a colleague who was volunteering at a hospital in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. She needed advice on an MRI machine that was donated to the hospital.

“She was asking me questions about scanning a patient, and I couldn’t just explain what she needed over the phone,” says Ken. “The next day, I booked a flight to Addis Ababa.”

Ken saw an opportunity to share his knowledge not only on how to operate an MRI machine and read scans, but also on clinical readiness and communication in a healthcare team.

“I wanted to give this group knowledge that they could then pass on to their colleagues and future technologists,” says Ken. The team learned through Ken’s images and guidelines, and used them as quick references to see what they were supposed to follow. Ken focused on the leadership skills that he gained over his career and encouraged the group to self-correct as they learned – an aspect of teaching that he learned at Michener.

A small group of technologists shadowed Ken for two weeks, and by the end of that time, the group was able to perform routine scans and examinations on their own.

When he thinks back to the lessons he learned from the experience in Addis Ababa, Ken says to never hesitate when an opportunity comes up: “I made up my mind quickly to go and support this team, and I’m so glad I did.”

What can I expect from the CASPer test? How do I register?

CASPer is an open-response, situational judgment test that evaluates aspects of your social intelligence and professionalism such as ethics, empathy, problem-solving and collaboration. The test requires both video and typed responses. Depending on the program you have applied for, the test takes about 90 to 110 minutes to complete. Applicants who are invited to take part in the CASPer assessment must register via Acuity Insights at acuityinsights.app/dates-times as early as possible as slots are limited.

Overcoming obstacles par for the course for international students Starting a program at a new school is always tough. But imagine beginning a program when you’ve recently arrived in Canada from abroad, leaving behind your family, friends and a career you’ve worked so hard to Susana Coronado Diagnostic Cytology, 2017 achieve. Now take it one step further and think about what it would take to then win an academic award based on outstanding achievement, especially when many of your classmates are Canadian-born students who already know the city, the language, the culture.

It sounds almost impossible, but this is the story for many students at Michener. “I hit many obstacles before I applied to Michener,” says Susana Coronado, who arrived from Lima, Peru in 2005.

When Susana was a student in Michener’s Diagnostic Cytology program, she received the Dr. Hugh Curry Diagnostic Cytology Scholarship for academic achievement, an award given to the student who has attained the highest average in certain cytology courses.

Before she applied to Michener, Susana wrote the certification exam for the Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Sciences in order to work in Canada as a Medical Laboratory Assistant (MLA). “I didn’t pass the exam the first time because I didn’t have enough knowledge of the field,” Susana says. “The Canadian exam required knowledge that wasn’t a priority in my training in Peru. I realized that I needed to train in a Canadian way.”

Susana then learned about Michener’s Diagnostic Cytology program, and was accepted on her second attempt. “I was about to give up on my career path when I got my acceptance letter,” she says. “I feel very lucky because I know that Michener is the right path to get my career back.”

STUDENT PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT GRANT

Michener offers more than 70 scholarships and awards to students who embody academic, clinical and other healthcare-related excellence.

BURSARIES

For students looking to enrich their personal and professional experiences beyond the classroom, the Student Professional Development Grant provides financial support for students to present at or attend a conference, represent Michener at an academic competition, or volunteer, among other activities.

Full-time students with demonstrated financial need may apply for a general bursary. Applications are open twice per year, in the fall/winter and summer semesters.

WORK-STUDY OPPORTUNITIES

CLINICAL RELOCATION BURSARY With clinical placements located throughout Canada, the Clinical Relocation Bursary is available to help cover the costs of a significant move for a clinical placement.

Students who need to relocate 50km or more for their clinical placement, and who have demonstrated financial need, are eligible.

Building a community of support through Michener’s Student Awards P

aragon Orthotic Laboratory in Victoria, British Columbia is a family business that was founded on the idea of giving back to the community. That’s why it was a natural step for Paragon and its President, Sean Cornwell, to support a Michener chiropody student starting their career.

“My dad was a podiatrist, and he started the company out of our family garage almost 50 years ago,” says Sean. “I guess I was his first employee when I was a kid.”

As the company grew and focused on prescription orthotics across Canada and the UK, Paragon stayed true to its roots and the Victoriabased business never lost sight of its priority to take care of others in need and help communities grow.

“Most of our staff are immigrants and refugees with families,” says Sean. “This isn’t temporary work. We hire workers with the idea that we’re creating craftspeople and giving them a career.”

The sense of community support at Paragon extends to education, and supporting Michener’s chiropody program through the annual Student Awards fit well with Sean’s vision.

“Michener’s student body is a very diverse group, and it’s important to me to foster diversity in the Canadian workplace,” he says.

When asked how he feels about supporting future healthcare workers and relieving some financial stress in a student’s life, it’s an easy answer for Sean: “There are a lot of opportunities to build on what my father and I have created. It feels terrific and I hope to do more.”

A place to reflect and honour Shkagamik-Kwe (Mother Earth) UHN’s first Indigenous healing garden has taken root at The Michener Institute of Education at UHN.

From design to implementation, the garden is Indigenousled, following the practices and protocols for planting a Gitigan (the Anishinaabemowin word for garden) that have been passed down through generations.

“The garden is a place to reflect and honour our Indigenous culture, our history, our stories, our language, our traditional medicines and how all of that is interconnected within the healthcare and education system, the teachings and values,” says Ashley Migwans, Program Coordinator, Indigenous Health & Population Health and Social Medicine at UHN. Ashley was part of a group that designed and planted UHN’s first Indigenous healing garden. The group incorporated plants that would not only thrive in the space, but also benefit Michener programming.

For example, the garden is home to dandelion, which can benefit the Diabetes Educator continuing education certificate program, as it’s traditionally used to help steady blood sugar levels for someone with diabetes. It’s also home to plantain, which can be used by the Chiropody program, as it’s traditionally used in compresses for foot sores.

Ashley also sees the garden as an opportunity to include Indigenous health and wellbeing practices into Michener programming, so that students have awareness and understanding when working with Indigenous patients.

“It’s meant to be a learning opportunity,” says Ashley. “There’s all different kinds of uses for all of these plants and this will provide an opportunity to have people understand why they’re so important.”

• Do not pick the plants, medicines or flowers.

• Learn about the plants and their medicinal purposes.

From student to CEO J

ake Tran, a Michener grad and now President and CEO of Toronto Grace Health Centre, always knew his future would lie with health sciences.

Since completing the Respiratory Therapy program at Michener, Jake has been part of many healthcare teams in many different capacities, and proven himself to be a leader in healthcare.

After graduating from Michener in 1997, Jake worked in home care, acute care, owned his own business and taught in the Respiratory Therapy program at Michener. He eventually entered management with Toronto Grace Health Centre , where he served as a frontline respiratory therapist, managed a patient care unit and started the Respiratory Unit before becoming the hospital’s President and CEO in 2018.

Jake’s passion for helping respiratory patients has gone beyond his professional dedication. In 2003, when the SARS outbreak was sweeping Jake Tran the nation, Jake was working in the acute care unit of his hospital when he Respirartory Therapy, 1997 contracted the virus. Having experienced such a severe respiratory virus as a respiratory therapist, he was able to more deeply understand all aspects of diagnosis, treatment and recovery for patients, which he is applying now to those affected by COVID-19.

“Not only is the immediate response an important factor in treating patients, it’s important to consider the patient’s future in their care plan,” says Jake. “Having been in care for an extended period of time, some patients may face challenges when they return to their lives after they’re discharged from hospital.”

Jia Inacio Radiological Technology, 2009

Michener grad looks back on her path to leadership J

ia Inacio entered the radiological technology field working in fast-paced clinics with a focus on women’s imaging. Now, as Diagnostic Imaging Manager for the Scarborough Health Network, Jia still works in women’s health, but in a leadership role sparked by her continuing education and an interest in improving healthcare processes.

Jia began her career at Princess Margaret Cancer Centre’s Breast Clinic in Toronto, where she learned from some of the toughest cases.

There, she was introduced to the world of process improvement, which set her on the course towards a career in management and leadership. “I was particularly interested in how to do things better and more efficiently for our patients,” Jia says.

After completing an MBA — as one of the few healthcare workers in the program — Jia was offered a leadership position at Humber River Hospital to help build a new breast imaging clinic.

“This job played right into my strengths,” Jia says. In this role, Jia used her business and clinical skills, and collaborated with oncology and surgery teams, to lead the launch of the breast health clinic.

Today, her vast experience has led Jia to a management position at Scarborough Health Network. As the Diagnostic Imaging Manager, Jia oversees day-to-day operations such as staffing and budgets, and she’s playing a key role in setting up the radiology module (Radiant) for EPIC, a digital platform that manages patient records and clinical information for seamless care.

Michener students frequently complete their clinical placements in Jia’s department, and she knows what to expect from them.

“These students are our future colleagues,” she says. “And when Michener grads apply for positions, I’m confident that they’re clinically competent because I know Michener’s standards.”
