Acknowledgment of the Land For thousands of years it has been the traditional land of the Huron-Wendat (wen-dat), the Seneca, and most recently, the Mississaugas of the Credit River.

Today, this meeting place is still the home to many Indigenous peoples from across Turtle Island and we are grateful to have the opportunity to work and learn on this land.

Just as important as acknowledging the significance of this land is recognizing the history that brings us here and the measures taken to reconcile Canada’s troubled past. We urge you, as future Canadian health care practitioners and leaders, to please make yourselves familiar with the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action – especially the seven related to health care – and practice your profession in that spirit.

Honorary Diploma Recipient The Honourable Dr. Kirsty Duncan, PhD, a distinguished Canadian scientist, academic and five-term Member of Parliament, served as Minister of Science, Minister of Sport and Persons with Disabilities and Deputy House Leader in the Government of Canada.

She chaired the inaugural Standing Committee on Science and Research, sat on Canada’s COVID-19 cabinet committee and contributed as Lead Author for North America on the Intergovernmental Panel

The Honourable Kirsty Duncan,

on Climate Change – which was jointly

PC, Ph.D

awarded the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize with former U.S. Vice-President Al Gore.

Before taking office, Dr. Duncan worked as associate professor of health studies at the University of Toronto Scarborough Campus, research director at the AIC Institute for Corporate Citizenship at U of T’s Rotman School of Management and associate professor of geography and earth sciences at the University of Windsor.

As a scientist, she led an expedition to the Arctic to discover the cause of the 1918 Influenza. An accomplished author, her book, Hunting the 1918 Flu, was nominated for a Canadian Science Writers’ Award.

Dr. Duncan also advised corporations on pandemic and emergency preparedness and executive leadership, and was an avid marathon runner, dancer and dance teacher. She received numerous awards and recognitions from academic, scientific and political institutions.

Governor General Academic Medal Bronze Collegiate The Governor General’s Medal, established in 1873, is one of the most prestigious awards that a student in a Canadian educational institution can receive for exceptional academic achievement. The Collegiate Bronze medal is awarded to a student who has achieved the highest average upon graduation at the post-secondary diploma level. The award will be presented on behalf of the Governor General of Canada, and the recipient will be recorded by the Office of the Governor General in the Chancellery of Honours in Ottawa.

Michener’s Coat of Arms SHIELD The most important element of a coat of arms is the escutcheon, or shield. Michener’s blue and gold shield represents the lifelong service of the Rt. Hon. Roland Michener, Canada’s twentieth Governor General, after whom The Michener Institute is named. On this border are placed, at the upper left, upper right and in the base, three closed books in blue with clasps of gold, symbolizing education.

CREST Above the shield and resting on a helm (helmet), The Michener demi-lion, a classical symbol of strength, holds the rod of Aesculapius, representing medicine. It rises out of a circlet of trillium flowers representing Ontario. The body of this lion is set with narrow gold rectangles on the vertical – a heraldic symbol for computerization and technology.

SUPPORTERS The stag and doe supporting the crest and shield represent the men and women who are teachers and students at The Michener Institute.

At the neck, each carries a collar of blue cord with a circular blue pendant; on the pendant is a gold flask symbolizing applied research.

MOTTO The Michener Institute’s motto, “Through knowledge to health”, translated into Latin (Per Scientiam Ad Salutem), provides the foundation for all other elements within the coat of arms.
