CROSSING THE BORDER

Located about 140 miles from Winnipeg, Thief River Falls is a convenient drive from the U.S.-Canada border. Be sure to have the necessary travel documents ready for a smooth crossing at one of the nearby border checkpoints.

Visit Thief River Falls promotes the Thief River Falls area as a destination for conferences, conventions, events, group tours, and leisure travelers, thereby enhancing economic growth of the area. They are funded by the 3% lodging tax that is collected from overnight visitors at all seven hotel properties in Thief River Falls, as well as the city campground.

ON THE COVER

The bridge at Hartz Park spans the Red Lake River, forming a scenic connection within the city’s Riverwalk trail. Funded in part by a federal grant in 1994, the bridge helps link Hartz Park to other parts of the riverfront, making it a key asset for both recreation and community events.

IN THE

early days

In spite of the rather provocative name of this community, the City of Thief River Falls has a long history of being a pleasant and secure place to live. In its earliest days, it was home to a small trading post (at the west end of what is now First Street Bridge) owned by John Baptiste LaBree with his family of 12 children. He had completed a homestead here in the early 1880s and, within the next

20 years, the townsite had grown considerably to boast a large sawmill, which employed up to 900 men at one point.

Already the home of a depot for the Great Northern Railway, the city gained prominence in 1904 becoming a hub for the Soo Line Railroad and soon the starting point for an Electric Railroad that reached to Goodridge. Thief River Falls on the west side of the Red Lake River merged in the early days with its sister city on the east side of the river, Red Lake Rapids, and become the county seat of Pennington County in 1910 when its citizens broke loose from Red Lake County.

With the closure of the sawmill in 1914, the future of the high school was briefly in doubt, so the school became a “Putnam School,” emphasizing a wide range of vocational training projects, such as agriculture, metal work, carpentry, office work, and home economics. This leaning has led to a Technical college program that has met the demands of the future in areas such as “unmanned aerial systems (UAS).”

THE

Jefferson Highway

When Americans first began to embrace the automobile in the early 1900s, a new era of long-distance travel was born. Before the interstate system and even before paved state highways, communities banded together to create “auto trails”—named routes that helped early motorists find their way across the country. One of the most ambitious of these was the Jefferson Highway, often called the “Pine to Palm Highway” because it stretched from the pine forests of Canada to the palm-lined streets of New Orleans.

2,300 miles through seven states, connecting Winnipeg, Canada, to New Orleans, Louisiana. It was envisioned not only as a means of travel but also as a symbol of unity, linking northern and southern communities. The route became one of America’s first great cross-country highways, predating Route 66 by more than a decade.

Thief River Falls, Minnesota, played a notable role in this story.

The highway entered the United States from Winnipeg and made its way through northwestern Minnesota, passing directly through Thief River Falls on its journey south. For a growing community like Thief River Falls in the 1910s and 1920s, being on the Jefferson Highway meant connection, commerce, and prestige. Travelers stopping in town needed fuel, meals, and lodging, and local businesses proudly advertised their proximity to the route.

The Jefferson Highway also served as an early marketing tool for communities along its path. Towns like Thief River Falls

emphasized their location on this international road to attract visitors and investment. As tourism and automobile ownership grew, so did the significance of being linked to a national highway system.

Though the Jefferson Highway was eventually replaced by the numbered U.S. and state highway systems in the late 1920s, its legacy endures. Today, modern travelers can still trace portions of the old route through Thief River Falls, where it followed stretches of what is now U.S. Highway 59. The highway is remembered as a pioneering effort that brought the promise of mobility and modernity to communities like Thief River Falls and helped lay the foundation for America’s love affair with the open road.

HISTORICAL LANDMARKS IN THE FAMOUS ROUTE Ralph Engelstad Arena (REA): The site of Minnesota’s first Jefferson Highway historic marker, the REA opened in 2003 and serves as a central community venue in Thief River Falls Peder Engelstad Pioneer Village: Although established later, this living-history museum recalls early 20th-century life in the area—including the era when the Jefferson Highway brought motorists and commerce through town Historic Soo Line Depot (City Hall): Built in 1913 as a passenger rail station, this Craftsman-style depot would have been a visible neighbor to early highway traffic and is now preserved as the city hall.

Our trip to Thief River Falls was a magical blend of nature and stargazing that we’ll always cherish. We kicked off our adventure at the Parker Pool Observation Deck, where the vibrant sunset gave way to a stunning display of stars! We climbed the fire tower on Co Hwy 7 the next morning, feeling exhilarated by the panoramic views and wildlife, where we spotted bald eagles! We relaxed in a peaceful spot and soaked in the beauty of the stars after learning about local wildlife at the visitor center. This trip truly showcased the breathtaking landscapes and celestial wonders of the area, making it a memorable escape into nature.

Our trip to Thief River Falls was an unforgettable adventure filled with hiking and exploring nature. We enjoyed three amazing trails: the Maakstad Trail, which offered challenging terrain and stunning views; the Rodahl Trail, with its vibrant woods and serene streams perfect for reflection; and the Headquarters Hiking Trail, where we encountered playful deer and enjoyed picnicking amidst beautiful scenery. hometown pride ON THE RINK

What if the forward from your favorite hockey team was also your neighbor, or maybe the owner of that hardware store you love, or perhaps the dad that’s coaching your kid’s hockey team? We all love pro sports teams, but the players might as well live on a different planet. Players for the Twins, Vikings, or Wild live behind the gates of exclusive communities (if they live locally at all), removed from the everyday lives of their fans.

That won’t be the case in 2026 with a hockey team coming to Thief River Falls.

The Minnesota Northern Lights will join the Federal Prospects Hockey League, known as the FPHL, a league now entering its 16th season. As Shawn Jones explains, “It’s kind of like single-A baseball. These guys are at the start of their minor-league careers, trying to develop and aspire to the NHL.” He serves on the league’s expansion committee and helped bring the project to Thief River Falls.

Until now, the FPHL has been strongest along the East Coast and in the South. The Minnesota Northern Lights will be part of a push to build a true Midwestern division. “We’ve got two teams in Michigan, one outside Indianapolis, and one in Topeka,” Shawn adds. “Thief River Falls was really critical for us to get done, and it’s done. It kind of gets the snowball going for the Midwest.”

“Thief River Falls is a smaller community, a great hockey town, but we’ll need Crookston, East Grand Forks, Bemidji, and the whole area to come in for a weekend game.” Shawn envisions a Friday-through-Sunday series that gives families a reason to make the short drive, enjoy the arena, and spend time together during the long Minnesota winter.

That regional support isn’t just talk; it’s already happening.

“The DigiKeys, Arctic Cats, and Sanford Health, they’re all in,” Shawn notes. “They said, ‘Hey, we want this. We want to see this happen.’ And you need that corporate support.”

The mayor and arena leaders backed it too, recognizing how the team could fill an underused building with energy and community life.

Just as important is what fans will see on the ice. “Minnesota is the hockey state,” Shawn affirms. “I would venture to say our roster will be about 90 percent Minnesotans, including players and coaches.” Those hometown faces won’t vanish after the final buzzer, either.

“We stress getting our guys out there into the schools, the hospitals, the local barbecue joint.

That’s how you build fans. A kid meets a player who reads to their class, and the next day the kid is begging their parents to go to the game.”

That kind of accessibility is part of the FPHL’s design. “Our league really does a bang-up job of interacting with the community,” Shawn adds. “And we keep it affordable. Mom and Dad can bring the kids, have a hot dog and a beer, maybe buy a hat or t-shirt, and not have to mortgage the farm to go.”

Affordable family fun, local faces, and real community engagement; that’s the vision for the Minnesota Northern Lights. When the puck drops in 2026, it won’t just be about hockey.

It’ll be about neighbors, families, and fans coming together for something that feels like their own.

THE MOST NORWEGIAN CITY IN AMERICA In 2012, the mayor of Thief River Falls issued a proclamation declaring a week in May to be Norwegian Heritage Week in recognition of the city’s distinction as the “most Norwegian city in America.”

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, almost 50% of city residents are of Norwegian ancestry.

The Sons of Norway Snorre Lodge #70 served as the impetus behind the proclamation and each year plans a week of festivities and activities designed to increase understanding of our Norwegian heritage, arts, culture, and traditions.

defines the surrounding community, and much of that character shows up in what it means for students and staff to “live unified.” The district’s Unified movement is built on inclusion, making sure every student feels valued, respected, and connected, whether they have intellectual disabilities or not. Unified activities pair students together in shared experiences ranging from Special Olympics bowling and bocce to soccer, flag football, volleyball, skating, and classroom projects centered on kindness and collaboration. The goal is simple: create a school culture where everyone has the right to play, learn, and thrive in the same spaces.

That sense of belonging is matched by an equally strong sense of identity. For generations, Thief River Falls students have grown up as Prowlers, a name that carries real meaning in the community.

“Our brand is called Prowler Pride,” Angie Dahlen, Executive Assistant to the Superintendent, explains. “We’re proud of our city, our community, our schools.

There are 1,662 students enrolled in the Thief River Falls School District for the 2025-2026 school year. The district invests heavily in students who need different learning environments. The Northwest Area Learning Center provides individualized

attention

and

credit

recovery options for students who don’t thrive in traditional settings. Student Service Programs such as American Indian Education, English Learners, Section 504, Health Services, Title I, Mental Health, and more are also available.

Academically, the district offers a broad range of options. Lincoln High School provides seven Advanced Placement courses, ten College-in-the-High-School courses, extensive PSEO opportunities, and more than 85 electives. Franklin Middle School engages students with electives like STEM Challenge, Industrial Tech, Culinary Arts, Money Management, Animation, Interior Design, Procreate Plus, Choir, Band, and Orchestra.

The mascot that once evolved from the town’s name is now synonymous with unity and hometown pride, and it weaves itself through academics, activities, and daily student life.

Career and Technical Education also plays a major role in the district’s offerings.

Students can explore agriculture, metal fabrication, small engines, and Family and Consumer Sciences, along with a wide range of technical and academic courses through the district’s partnership with

Northland

Community

and

Technical College. These offerings, from automotive technologies and welding to drafting and electronics, create practical pathways

into

associate

degrees,

certifications, or direct workforce entry.

The

district

has

over

partnerships

that

offer

business

internships,

job shadowing experience, and career pathways.

The district’s learning objectives stretch beyond

content

and

coursework.

Programs like Freshman and Sophomore Seminar helps students prepare for college, trades, the workforce, or military service.

In every building, program, and pathway, Thief River Falls Public Schools works to give students not only strong academics and opportunities but also a true sense of belonging and what it means to live unified and to be a Prowler.
