Welcome to THIEF RIVER FALLS
A letter from the Mayor
As we look ahead to 2026, I am proud of the progress our city has made and excited about what’s still to come. Housing remains a priority as we work to provide options for families, seniors and young professionals. We are also making important investments in infrastructure that will set the stage for long-term stability and opportunity. Thief River Falls has always been known for its strong community spirit and today that same spirit is helping us grow in ways that benefit both residents and visitors. We are committed to keeping Thief River Falls a welcoming place to live and visit. You’ll experience it in our scenic parks and trails; our thriving local businesses; and in the energy found at community events that bring people together year after year. Whether you’re here for the first time or returning to see what’s new, I hope you feel the pride we take in our community. Thief River Falls is a place where tradition meets progress and where you’ll always find a warm welcome. Thank you for visiting. We can’t wait to see you again! Mike Lorenson, Mayor of Thief River Falls

IN THE
early days
In spite of the rather provocative name of this community, the City of Thief River Falls has a long history of being a pleasant and secure place to live. In its earliest days, it was home to a small trading post (at the west end of what is now First Street Bridge) owned by John Baptiste LaBree with his family of 12 children. He had completed a homestead here in the early 1880s and, within the next
20 years, the townsite had grown considerably to boast a large sawmill, which employed up to 900 men at one point. Already the home of a depot for the Great Northern Railway, the city gained prominence in 1904 becoming a hub for the Soo Line Railroad and soon the starting point for an Electric Railroad that reached to Goodridge. Thief River Falls on the west side of the Red Lake River merged in the early days with its sister city on the east side of the river, Red Lake Rapids, and become the county seat of Pennington County in 1910 when its citizens broke loose from Red Lake County. With the closure of the sawmill in 1914, the future of the high school was briefly in doubt, so the school became a “Putnam School,” emphasizing a wide range of vocational training projects, such as agriculture, metal work, carpentry, office work, and home economics. This leaning has led to a Technical college program that has met the demands of the future in areas such as “unmanned aerial systems (UAS).”

DISCOVER YOUR CREATIVE SIDE AT SERENDIPITY ART HUB When you think of Thief River Falls, you might picture rushing rivers or outdoor adventures. However, tucked into the heart of town, Serendipity Art Hub offers something different: a welcoming place to play, explore, and unleash the creative spirit. Founded in 2021 by visionary artist and art-medicine practitioner Gail Ose, Serendipity Art Hub is built on a simple yet powerful idea: art is for everyone, regardless of skill level. Whether you’ve picked up a paintbrush before or this is your first time, you’ll find a program, class, or walk-in experience designed to invite curiosity and connection. From glass-fusing and ceramics to painting, mosaics, team-building workshops and even meditation-infused creative sessions, the Hub is more than a studio, it’s a community space. Drop in during walk-in hours, join a scheduled class, or book a private event (think birthday parties, corporate team outings, or a girls-night-out with a paint and sip twist). What sets Serendipity Art Hub apart is its focus on growth, healing and community through making. The tagline on their site emphasizes “promoting healing, personal growth and a sense of community through engaging in the arts.” Gail brings her own unique blend of creative practice and mindfulness to the space, from studio coaching to instinctive meditation sessions aimed at unlocking authentic expression. For visitors to Thief River Falls, Serendipity is the perfect stop whether you’re looking for a little creative downtime or want to bring someone back a truly one-ofa-kind souvenir. Imagine crafting your own fused glass keepsake, painting a custom piece, or simply browsing the space to soak up inspiration. With classes available for kids ages 5 and up, teens, and adults, you can plan a family visit or a solo escape. Whether you’re a seasoned artist or someone who just wants to try something new, Serendipity Art Hub welcomes you to pause, create, and connect. Because sometimes, the best travel memories are not just about
where you go, but what you make along the way. 708 Davis Ave N | 218-689-1029 serendipityarthub.com | Follow us on Facebook

THE MOST NORWEGIAN CITY IN AMERICA In 2012, the mayor of Thief River Falls issued a proclamation declaring a week in May to be Norwegian Heritage Week in recognition of the city’s distinction as the “most Norwegian city in America.” According to the U.S. Census Bureau, almost 50% of city residents are of Norwegian ancestry. The Sons of Norway Snorre Lodge #70 served as the impetus behind the proclamation and each year plans a week of festivities and activities designed to increase understanding of our Norwegian heritage, arts, culture, and traditions. In honor of our Norwegian heritage, we have placed uniquely HAND-CARVED TROLLS throughout our city. Have fun trying to locate them all. What a great photo op! 13 1
