Bigger, better and cooler than ever, the Kool Deadwood Nites 2024 Auction is the destination for classic car aficionados looking for their next dream ride.
This year marks Kool Deadwood Nites’ 30th anniversary as the Black Hills event dedicated to classic cars and classic music from the 1950s and 1960s. Kool Deadwood Nites runs from August 20 to August 25.
The Kool Deadwood Nites 2024 Auction is scheduled for 1 p.m. August 22, 9 a.m. August 23, and 9 a.m. August 24 at the Deadwood Mountain Grand Event Center.
McPherson Auction & Realty Company runs Kool Deadwood Nites’ classic car auction, which is known as the largest classic car auction in the upper Midwest. Bidders can expect a dazzling variety of about 250 vehicles, with cars, trucks and potential buyers attending from all over the United States.
A 2023 Dodge Demon is one of the many outstanding vehicles at this year’s auction. Only 3,300 of the powerful muscle cars were produced.
“We’ll have a little bit of everything,” says Kevin McPherson, who co-owns McPherson Auction & Realty with his brother, Todd. “There’s just a huge variety of very desirable, collectible units.”
“We’ll have street rods. We’ll have modified cars. Most of the vehicles will
be either originals or restored. I doubt we’ll have any project vehicles. Most everything will be show ready or parade ready, or (ready to) go have fun on a Sunday cruise,” Kevin says.
Each day’s auction will open by selling approximately ten pieces of vintage memorabilia such as signs and a CocaCola machine.
The McPherson family is proud that the Kool Deadwood Nites auction is “on the

“It’s grown to be a major car auction in this part of the country, and we’ve worked hard at it. It’s continued to grow and it’s a very successful operation,” Kevin explains. “The number of people keeps growing, and the quality of the vehicles keeps increasing. People travel from across the country to see our collection of cars and memorabilia.”
Bidding takes place live and via online simulcast, drawing classic car collectors from around the world.
“It’s not uncommon for us to have buyers from nearly
South Dakota’s reputation as a tourist destination, and the state’s growing population in recent years, has contributed to the growth of Kool Deadwood Nites auction, Kevin says.
Much of what keeps people coming back year after year are the friendships they build with others who share a passion for classic vehicles — and seeing familiar faces year after year is part of the fun for Kevin, too.
“Each year, it’s just kind of like a huge family reunion with a lot of people that are into cool cars. We do a lot of repeat business with people, and often it’s a time of year when we look forward to seeing people come in from all across the country,” Kevin shares.
“For some of them, it’s once a year (that they come), so it’s similar to a family reunion.”
“The auction is a fun atmosphere, with people having drinks, laughing with friends and buying cars,” Kevin adds. “We look forward to coming to Deadwood and seeing our friends every August.”
Family is at the heart of McPherson Auction & Realty Company year-round, and especially during the Kool
Deadwood Nites auction. The McPherson family all pitches in to make the auction a success, Kevin says.
McPherson Auction & Realty Company is based in Rapid City. Founded in 1949 by Kevin’s father, Dale McPherson, McPherson Auction is proud of its 75 years of experience conducting auctions throughout the Black Hills.
McPherson Auction has been a family-run business from the start, as Dale ran the business and Dale’s wife, Dorothy, did the clerking for more than 50 years. Though Dale passed away in 2023, his sons Kevin and Todd continue to operate McPherson Auction & Realty Company with their children. We appreciate all of Bergan’s help on the auctions, and all of the family pitches in to help on the large, ANNUAL EVENT. It is truly a family affair with each generation lending a hand in the success.
Kool Deadwood Nites’ nostalgic mix of classic vehicles and music has made it one of Deadwood’s signature annual events, and Kevin
says McPherson Auction & Realty Company is pleased to be part of it.
“We are fortunate to have a great relationship with the City of Deadwood, the Chamber of Commerce and the Deadwood Mountain Grand,” Kevin says. “The Chamber considers Kool Deadwood Nites to be the City’s single largest event of the year, and we’re proud to be part of the festivities.”

I believe that the 1932 Ford seems to have grown to be one of the most popular cars to build a street rod out of in America because of its one-year body re-design. I also think the 1933/34 redesign had become just as equal with desire when it comes to building a hot rod of any kind going back since their beginning. I can underline that statement with the fact that I believe they are the most re-created cars by manufacturers in America today with companies building

Funny how that thought is when you realize it is just a pile of tin shaped a certain way and put together to create an image that is appealing. Everything humans touch is based around a designed shape as well as function. And here is another thought to ponder on and a question I am putting out there because of my 75- year- old age. With technology growing at

Then in November of 2022 after scouring the internet for quite a while, he found a 1934 3-window coupe for sale in Lakewood, Colorado. It was a very well documented build starting with slew of paper work noting everything used to build the car right down to every nut and bolt. Because of what I was saying earlier in my article, I believe it was the pictures John saw showing the car from all angles that told him he had to have the car and bought it shortly thereafter. Besides the Aluminum headed 351 Ford Windsor with all kinds of highperformance internals topped with a Holley Sniper EFI, a C6 transmission controls the gear changes that pass to a 3.50

Pretty much everything a new car has and more with the list of goodies going on with too many to mention. John told me this was the most expensive old car he has ever bought, but even knowing that, he admitted he couldn’t build it for what he paid for it considering everything underneath is updated to today’s standards, but still with the appealing old car looks along with the updated wheels and a chopped top.
John is one of my many friends who buys a car without seeing
kind of bugs me. He showed me the car after it arrived after being shipped to his home and asked me what I thought. Looking at it top to bottom on the outside and under the hood and trunk, everything was very thought out as far as the build which is well done, until I tried to get inside the interior. It was a struggle, because of the way the seat was mounted, even with it way back, it was way too close to the steering wheel for me. John told me he had the same issue. I told John when I have built cars for other people in the past, it is
and out of, but also comfortable to drive. After looking at the interior a bit, I told him to get rid of the package tray behind the seat and move the seat back about six inches. He did what I suggested which was a bit more involved as there was a battery under the package tray that he relocated rearward in the trunk area, followed by moving the seat back. After doing that he told me it made a world of difference with getting in and out of the car as well as how it felt with driving.
The only other thing I suggested was for him to lower the steering column so the steering wheel wasn’t up in his face. I believe he will do that yet as I suggested. I told him to get in one of his newer cars and see where the steering wheel placement is for a comfortable driving position and try to match that. You don’t have to accept the way things are in an old car. The idea is to make them better so they not only look good, but feel good too for continuous, happy cruising wherever you point the car and go.

Fuel economy is one major factor consumers consider when buying or selling a car. Fuel consumption largely depends on the choices made by the driver that have a big impact on fuel economy and your budget.
Some drivers try to control and change their driving technique, while others try to solve this issue by keeping their car in good condition. Both approaches are key to achieving optimal fuel economy.
The way a vehicle owner drives greatly impacts fuel consumption. Here are four habits that can seriously take a toll on gas mileage.
When you take frequent, short trips, your car consumes more fuel.
trips don’t give enough time for the engine to fully warm up. As a result, the engine consumes more fuel to run the vehicle.
Putting your foot on the gas may save some time, but it costs you in terms of fuel. The engine burns fuel at a higher rate than usual when you speed. Vehicles begin to experience higher air resistance around 80 mph. This, in turn, lessens the fuel economy of your car.
It’s obvious that your engine works harder when the weight increases. An engine consumes more fuel when the vehicle is loaded with weight. A bike rack, cargo, trailer or interior load all factor in as extra weight.
This is another factor that is associated with daily driving habits.
switching gears quickly while driving aggressively affects fuel economy. Quick acceleration and heavy braking can decrease fuel economy by around 33%.
Your car consumes more fuel when it isn’t in top condition. Below are the four major physical characteristics that can affect your car’s fuel economy.
Regular maintenance keeps a vehicle in excellent condition. Poor turn affects fuel consumption. For example, the engine may have to
Friction among engine parts is reduced through engine oil. Good engine oil lubricates the component well and help them work fuel consumption.

Alignment issues are another reason why your car is giving less mileage. Out of alignment wheels or worn-out tires can pull against a vehicle’s motion. Such additional strain can reduce the fuel economy. That’s why experts advise drivers to replace old tires and

Automotive legends are coming to the Black Hills for an unforgettable exploration of South Dakota history. On Labor Day weekend, Studebaker and Packard enthusiasts will take a driving tour to a site where Gen. George Custer’s storied expedition stopped in 1874.
This year marks the 150th anniversary of Custer’s journey through the Black Hills. Wagons made by Studebaker were part of the expedition. The 46th annual Studebaker and Packard Weekend in Custer on Aug. 30, 31 and Sept. 1 is planning the driving tour to recognize the Studebaker company’s contributions to Black Hills history.
The Labor Day weekend gathering is hosted by the Dakotas Chapter of Studebaker Drivers Club. The event is exclusively for Studebaker and Packard owners; Packard was purchased by the Studebaker company. Some vehicles that were subsequently manufactured had features of both Studebakers and Packards.
Studebaker and Packard owners from throughout the nation
will be arriving in the Black Hills. Representatives of the Studebaker family, who themselves own a Studebaker car, will be special guests.
The weekend’s most remarkable experience is sure to be the 150th Anniversary Exploring with Custer Tour on Aug. 31.
where Custer and his entourage camped for four days during the Black Hills Expedition of 1874.
“You will learn the folklore of George Armstrong Custer's stay. We will travel on paved roads following near the path
public relations and membership committees for the Dakotas Chapter SDC.
Custer’s mission was to explore the previously uncharted Black Hills, the sacred land of the Lakota Sioux, while also to the southwest and investigating rumors of gold in the hills.
According to Mary’s research, Studebaker company products were part of the expedition. John Studebaker, co-founder of the company, produced wagons for the military and wheelbarrows for gold miners in California. He realized people heading west needed sturdy wagons to travel in, and Studebaker was one of the companies producing them in the 1800s.
“We know right before 1874 expedition that the U.S. government did buy a lot of big Studebakers, so we assume some wagons on the expedition were Studebakers,” Mary explains.
“A lot of people that buy Studebaker (vehicles) are people that like history,” Mary adds. “Our cars are different in that the Studebaker company started manufacturing cars in 1902 along with the Rambler that same year, predating Ford and other automobile manufacturers, but stopped production in 1965. Owners appreciate the mechanical innovations which Studebaker was developing and the advanced styling which distinguished them from other brands."
The tour will also travel to Keystone to learn more about gold mining in the region.
Author Paul Horsted of Custer will offer more insight into Custer’s expedition when he speaks to the group on Saturday, Mary says. Horsted is the co-author of the book “Exploring with Custer: The 1874 Black Hills Expedition,” which was updated and expanded in 2023.
“Custer was quite the promoter. He engaged several people to be writing journals, keeping notes and he engaged William Illingworth to take pictures,” Mary adds.
Horsted’s book includes new modern photos at 50 sites Illingworth photographed in 1874, plus new discoveries and additional material about the historic expedition.
Another highlight of the weekend will be the annual Car and Truck Show in downtown Custer. The public is invited to see dozens of Studebakers and Packards on display from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 1. Admission is free and visitors can vote for their favorites.
“Our show is nice because it has a variety of different models — some of the family models and some that are the high-speed, high-performance models, Avanti and Hawks. … We have a good variety of both restored even had a Studebaker farm truck, which was relevant to a lot of folks,” Mary says.
“We’re a different niche of car show. If you want to open the door and sit down in them, you can,” Mary reports. “Our owners are right by the cars so visitors can ask them questions about why they like to own them and the vehicles’ attributes.”

The coolest cars and classic music take Deadwood by storm for Kool Deadwood Nites, and the party is only getting bigger and better. Kool Deadwood Nites is celebrating its 30th anniversary with new events, concerts, and a spectacular car show with more than 800 pre-1973 vintage vehicles.
“We’re adding and expanding in honor of the 30th anniversary!” said Amanda Kille, marketing and sponsorship director for the Deadwood Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Bureau.
Kool Deadwood Nites is adding an extra day, running from Aug. 20 to 25.
“All the entertainment on Tuesday is new. Tuesday, Aug. 20, and we’re kicking it off in a big way!” Amanda said.
On Aug. 20, Mr. Wu’s is hosting a complimentary barbecue and a free concert by Eagles tribute band The Long Run. The Drifters take listeners back to the 1950s and 60s with a free concert on Deadwood Mountain Grand’s patio. Classic cars take over Deadwood’s historic Main Street for a Show and Shine from 6 to 9 p.m.
On Aug. 21, lunch in Sturgis is a new event for registered car owners. Music lovers can enjoy two new free concerts at Mr. Wu’s that evening — The Band Kandie and ZZ Top tribute band Outlaw Square.
The new, free concert series continues at Mr. Wu’s with performances by West Bound and The Long Run on Aug. 22, Stereo Trip and Aeromyth “The Ultimate Aerosmith Tribute” band on Aug. 23, and West Bound and Bostyxx “A Tribute to Boston and Styx” on Aug. 24.
These concerts are in addition to the free concerts on Main Street, headlined by
Herman’s Hermits starring Peter Noone, ABBA Revisited, and Elton Dan and the Rocket Band.
Also new this year, rock superstar George Thorogood wraps up Kool Deadwood Nites with a ticketed concert Aug. 25 at the Deadwood Mountain Grand.
Kool Deadwood Nites is offering a new, free parking shuttle in Lead in addition to the shuttle at Cedar Rose Spa, plus many favorite returning events. Visit deadwood. com/event/kool-deadwood-nites/ for a complete schedule of events and more information.

with several dozen vehicles, will showcase hundreds of cars and trucks this year.
Local experts volunteer their time to judge the show. Last year’s Best of Show winner was a coral and gray 1955 Bel Air owned by Deadwood area residents Mark and Kathy Johnston. That Bel Air graces the 30th anniversary Kool Deadwood Nites poster, and Mark said he’ll likely bring it and another one of his cars to this year’s show.
“This one (on the poster) is my 11th 1955 or 1956 Chevy I restored,” said Mark, who owns are in the process of being restored.
when I was 15, and I have had them ever since,” Mark said.
“The Kool Deadwood Nites Car Auction joined the lineup 20 years ago and brings an additional 200 cars to Deadwood that cross the auction block each year,” Amanda said.
McPherson Auction Co. runs the Kool Deadwood Nites auction, a threeday event that attracts bidders and buyers nationwide, according to Kevin McPherson, co-owner of McPherson Auction Co.
Kool Deadwood Nites owes its beginning to Willie Davison, creator of Hot August Nights in Reno, Nev., who brought the idea with him when he moved to Deadwood. Davison worked with local leaders and the Deadwood Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Bureau to create and launch Kool Deadwood Nites.
The 1955 Bel Air was “a car in a box,” just a shell and boxes of old parts he bought from the retired owner of a body shop in Sturgis. Mark is proud that he did the majority of rebuilding and restoration work over about three years, replacing the engine, seats and upgrading the interior. Coral material that was original to a 1955 Chevy accents the door panels and seats, and Mark painted the car’s exterior himself.
“It was kind of a dream to build that car,” Mark said.

The Midwest Regional Hot Rod Rally in Moville, Iowa, is gaining a national reputation as a vehicle showcase unlike any other.
“If it’s on wheels and has a motor and it’s kind of cool, bring it out and have a good time with it,” says Pat Rogers, the rally’s founder and chairman. To clarify, anything with wheels and a motor is welcome at the event and the motor is optional as the organizers also welcome cool bicycles in addition to cars, semi-trucks, tractors, or even motorcycles.
The sixth annual Midwest Regional Hot Rod Rally will be held September 13-14 at the Woodbury County Fairgrounds. Since the event’s inception in 2019, Pat says the rally was created to be “the last bit of a hurrah to come out with your toy and have fun before you put it to bed for the winter.”
The rally was conceived by a couple of guys (Pat Rogers and Randy Hayworth) while they were sitting around talking about how great the Woodbury County fairgrounds would be for a car rally event. From there, “It became an annual ‘go to’ event for car folks from as far away as Illinois, Texas, Arkansas and beyond,” Pat explains.
The Woodbury County Fairgrounds serves as the ideal venue for the rally’s lineup of live music, dirt drag racing, kids’ games, mini bike races, food trucks and more than 200 vehicles from as far away as Texas, Pat adds. “There’s a lot of concrete, shade, and space to enjoy!”
The Midwest Regional Hot Rod Rally event is slated for Friday afternoon and night and all day on Saturday. “On Friday night people can ‘cruise the loop’ and join in on the ‘garage hop’ where cars cruise the town and get to stop in
to our local car guys’ “man caves” to visit and check them out,” Pat explains.
According to Pat, Saturday events are full of car-guy ‘eye candy’ and noise and the smell of rubber. “Our show is not a ‘watch the paint dry’ type of show. There is a full day of events.”
In addition to a full slate of events and activities, there are unique awards presented to the best at show. “Our trophies are hand-picked and created by our local car club, the Junkyard Bandits Car Club,” Pat says. “They have created some enviable iron to have on your shelf. The Best of Show trophy is voted on by the spectators and it is an honor having your vehicle on next year’s garb (t-shirts, koozies, calendars). We have more than a dozen categories and there is something for everyone and everything.”
New to the event this year is the addition of a Dyno machine inviting car owners to measure their horsepower offcially. “We are also inviting antique tractors and semi-trucks to join the array of hot rods, classic cars, muscle cars, motorcycles and more. We have a motorcycle stunt show, and a burnout contest,” Pat adds. “There’s a lot of things going on. It’s not just a ho-hum car show. There’s a lot of noise at the rally.”
There will be more vendors to browse and eateries in 2024. Visitors can fnd car parts and vehicles at the rally swap meet as well.
Admission is free for spectators and camping is available at the fairgrounds for the event. Visit midwesthotrodrally.com to enter a vehicle, see the 2024 schedule of events and for more information.

"I love the Turbo sounds! The boost launches never get old."
Does your truck have a name?
The Syclone.
What’s your favorite part about your truck? Is there anything you would change?
My favorite part about the truck is the looks it gets from people that know what it is and from the people that don't. Most will stop and ask questions about it. It's really cool to see the attention it gets. I also love the Turbo sounds! The boost launches never get old, either.
The only thing I would change it the amount I get to drive it. Living in SD the days are limited.
Tell us a little about the truck and why you chose it. What's your car’s story?
This truck is a 1991 Syclone #906 out of 2,998 made. As a kid, my dad had an S10 that I fell in love with. After that, we all wanted a Syclone or Typhoon. They were turbo and awd. I remember watching videos of Syclones Boost launching on YouTube for hours, and I showed everyone the videos at school.
The Syclone is my dream truck. I found mine in 2019 in rough shape in Wyoming and worked a trade deal on it. It was missing the cladding and ran rough, but with only 71k miles, I had to have it. It wasn't long before I found the original cladding to the pickup. Shortly after, she was painted by Colin Peterson and looking better than new.
What plans do you have for this truck?
My future plans would be to try and keep it as clean as possible. It really needs a Holley kit, so that’s a big one. I plan to get a ceramic coating on it this next summer and maybe even make some decent passes at the track! I plan to drive it until I pass it down to my daughter.
What’s an interesting fact or something people may not know about this ride?
There were only 2,998 Syclones made and this model was only available in black. They were Turbo and Awd.

I would like to give a huge shout out to my wife for supporting the dream!

The Mighty Missouri River
Find history and adventure along the 443 miles of big water of the Mighty Mo’ that runs from the top of the state to the border of Nebraska that nearly cuts South Dakota in half. The Missouri River’s four reservoirs were created by large, hydroelectric dams including Lake Oahe, Lake Sharpe, Lake Francis Case and Lewis and Clark Lake and are prime locations for boating, fshing, and all types of water recreation.
FUN FACT: Oahe
Dam, located six miles north of Pierre, is one of the largest earth-rolled dams at the time of its construction and stands 245 feet high and spans two miles long across the river. It was dedicated on August 17, 1962 by President John F. Kennedy.
Located on the border of South Dakota and Nebraska near Gavin’s Point dam in Yankton, this twenty-fve mile long lake is ideal for water sports and fun of all kinds including sail boating, fshing, and swimming. Outdoor recreation, camping, and hunting are popular activities in and around the Lewis and Clark Lake area.
Lewis and Clark held their frst meeting in 1804 with the Yankton Sioux at Calumet Bluff.
Just north of bustling downtown Sioux Falls, Falls Park spans 123 acres including the visitor information center and observation tower, Falls Overlook Café, the Queen Bee Mill, a seasonal Farmers Market, playgrounds, and a walking path that connects to the Sioux Falls Recreation Trail with over 36 total miles of paved trail. Hike the Greenway Recreation Main Trail Loop alongside the Big Sioux River for 19.13 miles of scenic views of the city parks, open feld, and forested areas including Falls Park.
FUN FACT: On average, 7,400 gallons of water drop 100 feet over the course of the Falls each second.

The engine block has many duties that are crucial to the correct running of an engine. The block is designed to harness cylinder combustion, stabilize the crankshaft rotation, guide the pistons, help provide ring seal, distribute critical engine oiling, cool the engine from the high combustion temperatures, and in some blocks house and stabilize camshaft dynamics, just to name a few.
The accuracy of the points and planes of the block will make a big difference on the reliability, performance, and power that the engine will put out. It is usually assumed that the engine blocks are precision machined and accurate from the factory, but that is not true. It has been proven that they can be severely off and sometimes cannot be used in a performance engine situation.
The main bore centerline is the imaginary center point where the crankshaft runs and is the backbone of the engine block. This is where the bore and deck angles, deck heights, camshaft alignment, and cylinder alignment are all based from and this is the crucial baseline that all performance block machining processes are indicated on. The main bore must be machined straight and round to start the process.
From this point, the deck heights are measured from front to back. The factory deck heights
have sometimes been found to be more than .020” off, and this would affect the compression ratio from end to end and side to side. To correct this condition the block is dialed on the main bore and machined to equal, parallel, and squaring of the deck.
Next are the cylinder angles. These also have been found to be off from the factory condition. Dialed on the main bore, the cylinders are machined out to correct the angles and sometimes to correct the bore centers. In some cases, the camshaft alignment may also need to be corrected to match the main bore centerline and the lifter bore angles and alignment may also need to be corrected to provide proper camshaft dynamics.
Brand new engine blocks now on the market are often advertised as being precision CNC machined for dynamic accuracy, but upon precise measuring and checking these blocks also have been found to be in the need of correction in some areas, especially with core shift.
Attention to all of the geometry on the engine
There are many ways to machine the engine
block, but there is only one correct way. Here at Sehr Performance, we go the “Extra Mile,” to ensure that every engine block is critically checked and precision machined to obtain and harness all of the possible potential performance.
Dear Motor Medics,
The water has been coming and coming around here lately and I have new engine? Mike in Redwood Falls, Minnesota
Dear Mike,
No amount of standing water is safe. You just don’t know what’s waiting under it. Even
Some have air intakes which draw their air from below the bumper up into the engine and others have them very high. If you have a car with a low air intake, then what you have essentially is a high horsepower shop vac. It only takes a partial cup of water to hydro lock an engine and destroy it.
Take care, the Motor Medics
Dear Motor Medics,
Thanks. Jeff in Nebraska City
You have options with this one and so does anyone with a rear AC line set leaking as long as you can access the damaged part of the line set and there is some good material on each side of the damaged area. We use AC line repair kits in our shop as do many
line set and then connect them with an AC hose. This has been a permanent repair for us. Many times, it usually saves the customer hundreds if not more on a rear AC line repair. Ask around.
Take care, the Motor Medics
