When you’re in business, word-of-mouth referrals from a valued customer are always a good thing, wouldn’t you agree? Ryan O’Riley, owner of O’Riley Custom Detailing, certainly thinks so. In fact, his business is doing well based, regularly, on this very thing.

One such referral brought the stunning 1973 Dodge Challenger you see here into the shop. The Challenger’s owner, Paul Hemmingson, was at an automotive event and asked friends where the best professional detail shop would be to have a car ceramic coated. The answer that a friend gave him: O’Riley Custom Detailing!

Before we tell you more about OCDetailing, here are some particulars on the Challenger. Paul works at Schulte Subaru in the restoration area. He is a former dirt track racer who has been building cars for the last 20 years or so. Paul purchased the Challenger as a “started” build and completed it over a 2 ½ year period, doing nearly all the work on the car himself. The gorgeous “Sinnamon Stick” paint was applied in the paint shop at Schulte Subaru.

The car is powered by a 6.4L Hemi with an 8-speed automatic from a 2018 Challenger. Paul feels that the 485 horsepower produced is suitable for this “driver” car. This is a great looking (and sounding) car that is going to draw a lot of attention wherever it goes and the lifetime ceramic coating applied by OCDetailing is going to enhance and preserve that!

As you may recall from our July ’23 issue, Ryan opened his shop near Tea, SD, in 2022. It is located at 220 N. Linda Ave, Suite 4, near Straight Lines Custom Restorations. Ryan works closely with them, detailing classic cars on a regular basis.

Ryan has been detailing cars since his early teen years, helping to maintain, clean, and detail the family cars. Soon, he was doing show prep on friends’ cars during his high school years. After graduating from Lake Area Technical College and working in other fields, Ryan began detailing professionally while living in Arlington, SD. He opened his own shop there in 2019. After moving to Tea and opening a business there, Ryan has been a busy man ever since.

While OCDetailing is essentially a one-man shop, it is a family business. Ryan’s wife, Angela, assists in the business and his brother, Derek, fills in regularly. In addition to Ryan’s selftaught background, he was schooled at the Autogeek & Rupes Detailing Class at the Muscle Car Museum in Florida. He is certified in working with the Rupes machines, buffing processes, and application of ceramic coatings. He also regularly attends refresher courses to stay current with the latest trends.

lasting beauty, as well as peace of mind. (Visit their website: www. systemx.com to learn more.)

The detailing services at OCDetailing cover the whole range of automotive needs: interior, exterior, engine bay, wheels/tires, paint correction and ceramic coating. In addition, for do-ityourselfers, the Deluxe Car Care line of products is available for purchase. This line includes spray detailer, waterless wash, tire shine, etc.

Ceramic coating is Ryan’s specialty and he exclusively uses the System X Automotive Protection System. The System X Automotive Ceramic Protection interlocks its molecular structure with the surface molecules of paintwork to literally become the functional surface of your vehicle’s paintwork. The result is

At a recent seminar, Ryan learned that factory automotive clear coats are now thinner than ever as manufacturers attempt to reduce costs. The System X Max Ceramic is thicker and harder than factory clear coats. It’s also important to understand that a professionally applied ceramic coating is different than the low-priced ceramic sprays on the market today. System X Max has a lifetime lifespan (with easy annual maintenance) while most sprays last for 9 months or less. You can even register your System X treatment with CARFAX, adding additional long-term value to your car.

Ryan recognizes that a proper ceramic coating treatment is not an inexpensive process. Contrary to what may be sold through some new car dealerships, Ryan’s treatment is a multi-step process. Depending on the condition of the vehicle, rail dust removal, clay bar cleaning, and buffing may all be involved prior to the ceramic application. Upon seeing the finished product,

customers agree that the value is there in this process. It should be noted, also, that Ryan is committed to quality customer service. If a customer vehicle needs a touch up later, even on short notice, Ryan is happy to handle it.

The work at OCDetailing is divided between collector cars and late model vehicles. As pricing of late model vehicles rise, more and more customers are coming in to protect that investment. The same holds true with classics and collector cars. As these are restored, owners want to continue the preservation process and keep them looking their best. Many of Ryan’s customers are repeat customers, bringing in their late model driver and or performance car, as well as their older classics. (And don’t forget your motorcycle…Ryan details those as well!) To have the level of commitment that Ryan does towards providing customers with the finest detailing around, you might guess that he is a car guy, and you’d be right. He owns and shows a beautifully restored 1954 Ford Skyliner that once was his grandfather’s. He has also immersed himself in the local car scene since moving to the Sioux Falls area.

Ryan is a member of the Great Plains Street Rodders as well as a sponsor of the annual Nyberg’s Ace Hot Classics Night Car Show in downtown Sioux Falls. OCDetailing will also be participating in an upcoming cruise night at Straight Lines Custom Restorations on September 25th. As a dedicated car guy, Ryan understands what customers are expecting when they bring their pride and joy in for detailing.

More than “just another car shop” Ryan operates O’Riley Custom Detailing based on positive relationships, friendships, and customer trust. Isn’t it time to elevate your car to the next level? Give Ryan a call or stop in the shop to learn more. Then, get scheduled in to have your vehicle protected and looking its finest. You, and your car, will love it!

My story today is about one of the many women in our car club group who impresses me every time I visit with her. Her name is Dianna Martin. In her younger years, she grew up in a Ford motivated family thanks to her father’s influence in Sioux City, Iowa. Dianna told me one of her favorite car memories happened in 1970 after her father gave her his Ford Galaxie to use as a high school driver.

Having the new found freedom of driving was fun, leading to weekend cruising with friends. It was her opinion that most people cruising the loop then in Sioux City were either Ford or Chevy people, which creates a picture that reminds me of the “American Graffiti” movie. Anyway, one night while cruising the loop, this kid she knew but didn’t like, was driving a Chevy and challenged her to a drag race. So, she obliged him by doing so and beat him for the two blocks they raced. After they stopped at a stop light, Dianna yelled at the guy with the Chevy that she just beat saying, “You just got beat by a girl and a six cylinder!” He said, ‘No way!’ So, they both pulled over to a curb and opened the hood on Dianna’s Galaxie making the guy’s mouth drop to the ground. She said he went home after that and didn’t cruise any more that night.

Another time Dianna met a Ford guy cruising the loop who became her high school sweet heart, which led to them getting married later. During the young years with him she learned how to do anything and everything on 289” Ford engines and always with manual transmissions. She loved learning how things worked with cars. She told me she never drove a car with an automatic transmission until 1989.

After being married for a short time, they moved to California to get out of the cold. I don’t know how Dianna did it, but she became an information technology person while raising two kids. She said I.T. people have no problem getting jobs any place in this country, which has been her mainstay most of her life. She had a 1973 Mustang as a daily driver that she bought new in Sioux City that her husband later decided to trade off for a four-wheel drive pickup when they lived in California. I don’t think that sat very well in her mind as she missed her Mustang and wanted another one. She reported that you could find Mustangs all over California for $2,000 to $2,500, but they all needed work.

Then, in 1989 she found her present 1966 Mustang with a relatively newly rebuilt engine, a new paint job, and interior. She said it cost a little more, but it was worth it not having the hassles of doing those things. And, the car is totally stock the way she understands it, and she likes it that way. It has a 289” engine with a C4 automatic transmission, power steering, but no power brakes, AM radio, a black pony interior, and even the original hub caps with the spinners. The car had 50,000 miles on it when she bought it, and now it has 100,000 miles because she really enjoys driving it.

Dianna and her family eventually moved back to Sioux City because the economy was getting so bad all over the country and she wanted her kids to have a better education than she had. She got divorced in 2005 and moved to Sioux Falls in 2012 to be close to her kids and grandkids. Then in 2018, Dianna retired from her I.T. work. Today, Dianna is still so busy by choice with different types of work that she does with helping friends, or because she likes it, or it is work close by, all for vacation money.

Because of the varied hours, Dianna rarely gets to drive the Mustang, but always enjoys it whenever she has a chance. Just before I got to her storage unit to take pictures of the Mustang, Dianna had installed a

new battery because the other one was dead. After she got it backed out of her storage stall with the car idling to warm up, she told me she was thinking of putting new points and plugs in the car and tuning it up. How many women do you know who can do that? She made mention about the fact that when her three grandsons were young, that they really didn’t like the color of the Mustang. She chuckled while telling me that and further commented that once the grandsons became teenagers, they started asking who is going to get the car when she can’t drive anymore or she passes away?

Suddenly, they didn’t care anymore that the car was yellow. I’ll bet the grandsons’ attitudes changed when their grandma took them for a ride in her yellow Mustang, and with them seeing all the attention the it gets, while realizing this car is pretty cool!

Once in a while I think about the idea of not being able to drive any more, because it is one of the few freedoms that we as individuals have, and I am sure everyone enjoys just being able to get in a car and go someplace for fun, especially in an old car.

CAR. WHAT’S YOUR CAR’S STORY?

WHAT’S AN INTERESTING FACT OR SOMETHING PEOPLE MAY NOT KNOW ABOUT THIS RIDE?

The first time I saw one like it was at a car show in Nebraska and I immediately fell in love. My husband knew I wanted one so badly, so on one of our anniversaries he surprised me with this awesome project so I could have one of my own. This car is really a great fit for me with its excellent handling, modern feel and retro styling. It makes it so much fun to drive. As far as the story goes, it was bought new in Litchfield, MN and eventually converted into a big block built for drag racing. It was raced up until around 2006 when it was converted back to its numbers matching components and sold. The next owner had gone through a lot of work in the process of restoring it, and then lost interest. That is how I received it and completed what was started.

FAVORITE PART OF THE CAR?

I am so into music so my favorite part would have to be the factory 8-track player. I love listening to my favorites like Lynyrd Skynyrd, Aerosmith, and AC/DC while cruising. The only thing I might change would be the drivetrain.

A lot of people don’t realize that the Road Runner lived on past 1974. They began this option package in 1976 with it earning the MotorTrend Car of the Year award that same year. The Road Runners of this era were either offered with a 318 or a 360hp V8 no big blocks and had two packages, the standard A57 Road Runner package, which included a basic stripe kit and the A66 Super Pak, which included the louvers and spoilers additional from just the decals. The Super Pak was only available in spitfire orange in 1977.

PLANS FOR THE CAR?

Right now, my plans are to keep it as is. I love the vintage look and feel, but it would be fun to swap in a modern Hellcat engine.

DOES YOUR CAR HAVE A NAME?

Vinny.

For fans of cool vehicles and classic cars, Canton is the place to be July 27 and 28. The 2024 Canton Area Car Show for Generations will be family-friendly fun for all ages.

The show’s name is a tribute to one of its organizers, Bernie Tyrrell, and the love of cars he shares with his son Mick, his grandson Josh, and his three greatgrandkids. Bernie has a 1946 Ford, while Mick owns a 1965 Chevy Malibu. Together, they built a rat rod out of car parts left over from other vehicles 20 years ago.

Car show weekend begins with Chase the Ace from 5 to 7 p.m. July 26 at The Wheel in downtown Canton. Proceeds benefit the car show. Harley Davidson of Sioux Falls will be at the show with a full display

including a trailer and tent with demo rides and The Wheel will host food trucks and a show and shine from 5 to 8 p.m. for anyone who wants to display their vehicle.

The 2024 Canton Area Car Show for Generations begins July 27 with Touch the Truck from 2 to 4 p.m. in Jack Fox Park. Children can get behind the steering wheels of fire trucks and other big equipment for hands-on lessons from local firemen and other experts.

The day’s events continue with a poker run from 2 to 6 p.m. starting at The Wheel. Participants pay $20 a hand and a portion of the proceeds benefit the car show.

STOP BY AND CHECK OUT THE JIM MCGRANN 1964 SHELBY DAYTON COUPE BUILD. THIS IS THE FAMED REPLICA OF THE CAR THAT TRIUMPHED IN THE MOVIE ‘FORD v FERRARRI’

“Cruisers are encouraged to drive past local assisted living and nursing home facilities so residents there can view the vehicles,” states Lisa Hinker, Director and President of the Canton Area Chamber of Commerce.

Bernie explains. “It’s a bring your vehicle event. It’s open to cars, trucks and pickups — anything they want to show. We hope for at least 100 entries.”

Entries will be judged and winners will receive custom-made sheet metal trophies. The 2024 Canton Area Car Show for Generations is co-sponsored by the Canton Area Chamber of Commerce. Visit cantonareacarshow. com for more information.

There will be motorcycle demonstrations, food trucks and vendors during the show. Most downtown businesses will be open for shoppers, says Lisa, who hopes the car show attracts at least 1,000 visitors.

“I asked the community what they wanted to see us bring back, and I heard every time, ‘Bring back the car show,’” Lisa adds. “The overall feeling people had when the event was going on was electrifying and the response from the community has been exhilarating. They are excited to see it come back.”

THINKING

BIG IN DIESEL TECHNOLOGY

Lake Area Technical College has one of the only available accredited programs for diesel technology in the state. Working in the industry himself, Corey Mushitz is a graduate of the program and is now the diesel department supervisor on campus.

As a diesel technology student at LATC, you can expect to be taught the latest in diesel tech from several highly qualified instructors, including Corey. Not only is he the department supervisor, he is also the instructor for the CAT ThinkBIG program.

“Students who attend our program have a 99 percent chance of job placement after graduation, and most start working in the field through internships and hands-on experiences early in their educational career,” Corey says.

Much of the program relies heavily on hands-on training in the diesel facility to help students feel confident when placed out in the workforce. With America running on diesel, each of the jobs students obtain after graduation is important. At the end of the program, students should be able to:

1. Complete customer service work orders and provide excellent customer service

2. Demonstrate safe work habits by using personal protective gear and follow safety rules in the shop

3. Access technical information

4. Recognize the value of volunteering services

5. Complete major repair projects

Other unique educational opportunities include attending a biodiesel fuel seminar, research alongside South Dakota State University on biodiesel in modern engines, low emission engines, diesel exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) systems, and more.

While students can choose to pursue a general education in diesel technology, LATC has spent a great deal of time working on a series of specialties. Corey explains, “We created the specialties because the diesel industry is growing and changing. Businesses are also trying to plan ahead for the large number of retirements in the coming years.”

Each of the specialties typically results in some sort of a contract or agreement with the student involved. Corey adds, “The contracts can be customized to benefit both parties. The businesses invest a lot into the students like paying for tuition, tools, computers, etc. while the student agrees to stay on with the company for a set time.”

Specialties include the ThinkBIG program, which partners with Caterpillar and Butler Machinery. It was the first of the specialties and partnerships with LATC, added in the fall of 2008. Following that, was the Top Tech Program that was added in the fall of 2014 in partnership with Case New Holland and Titan Machinery.

More recently, Techknowledge was added in partnership with Brandt Holdings and Kibble Equipment, and ButlerMAX was added in partnership focusing on AGCO/Fendt. The newest specialty is Kubota Tech.

“Any of the programs with internships built in them are most beneficial to students,” Corey shares. “Students may be at LATC for eight weeks and then go to an internship for eight weeks and they can end up with up to four internships before graduation. They also face a different set of challenges wherever they go.”

My name is Levi Baumberger. I will be a secondyear student at Lake Area Technical College under the ThinkBIG Program. So far, I’ve really enjoyed being here and learning about my future career as a service technician at Butler Machinery. I really like the company that is sponsoring this program and the school for teaching us everything. My instructors Corey, Chase, and Matt are the best teachers I’ve ever had and are very good at thoroughly explaining things so I can understand it. I really like how this program sends me back to the store every eight weeks on a paid internship and then I return back to the school for another eight weeks to learn more in depth information about the equipment we work on. I also am happy that students are taken care of in the school and at the dealership where we work.

—Levi Baumberger

My name is Ben Grant, and I am attending school at Lake Area under the ThinkBig program for Butler Machinery. My experience with the program has been an overall positive experience. Our instructors: Corey, Chase, and Matt, have been truly some of the best teachers I have had in my adult life. When they teach, they make sure we understand the concepts and theory behind what we do. They will sit down one on one and they do everything in their power to make sure students truly understand the concepts. Not only are they incredible instructors, but concerned for our well-being and our overall success, for school and life in general. Corey is passionate about his profession and wants nothing more than to see his students become successful.

IMPACTFUL FACTS

• LATC has one of the largest diesel training centers in the country at 43,000 square feet.

• The college also has more than 60 operational diesel engines in their fleet for training.

• Partnering with CAT and CASE, LATC has top of the line equipment and component parts to train with.

• LATC is one of very few colleges in the nation to be certified by both Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) and the Association of Equipment Distributors (AED)

None of this would happen without Butler Machinery’s help. At the end of the day, this program is made possible through their willingness to take on so many new employees each year, and then develop them into phenomenal technicians. Butler is a company whose core values exemplify how every company should be run. They treat us all with respect and the full-time technicians are all willing to teach us interns the craft. The program is a great opportunity for anyone willing to put in the effort to secure a lifelong career for themselves. Our instructors and Butler alike are fantastic at what they do, and on behalf of all current ThinkBIG students, we are thankful and appreciate everything they do.

Just like your laptop or cell phone, brakes can also overheat. The pressure applied to brake pads generates the friction needed to either slow down or to stop your car entirely, depending on how much force you apply to the brake pedal.

Whether you’re stopping every few feet in bumper-to-bumper traffic or merely coasting to a halt at a four-way stop—your brakes are working hard to generate friction. Where there’s friction, there’s heat. Overheated brakes can show themselves in a few different ways, through different sights, smells, and sensations.

What causes brakes to overheat?

Water in the brake fluid reservoir. Over time, condensation can collect within the brake fluid reservoir. When the brake fluid heats up

Smoking brakes (and they smell bad). Brake pads burned by aggressive driving might actually begin to release smoke as well as smell bad.

Squealing brakes. Constant, excessive friction can generate so much heat that the brake pads become “glazed,” or smoothed over, emitting a squealing sound when the brakes are applied.

Avoid overheating brakes by making smooth and steady driving your goal. Always leave enough distance between your car and other objects. If you are driving downhill, try engine braking–downshifting or letting up on the accelerator to slow down rather than going straight for the brake pedal. Give yourself plenty of room to slow down instead of having to slam the brakes.

As soon as you feel, smell, hear, or even suspect brake problems, slow down and find a safe place to pull over. While you allow your brakes cool, call a brake repair shop. Then, use your best judgment to determine whether you’re able to drive to the shop or if you

Known for its clear waters, Lake Vermillion Recreation Area is a favorite destination for fishing, boating, and swimming. This 512-acre reservoir is found just 27 miles west of Sioux Falls and some say that the stream received its namesake from the red quartzite lining its bank.

Make a splash near Lake Madison, just 45 minutes north of Sioux Falls. 2,800 acres of sparkling water await for the on or off-shore angler, or you can take part in canoeing, kayaking, water skiing and swimming at nearby Walker's Point Recreation Area.

THE EXTRA MILE

A good and efficiently running engine requires several different things, one of which is the piston ring seal. The ring seal is achieved by proper machine work and a specifically designed ring package, all of which contains the combustion that’s created. The result is power.

Piston rings cause drag, and this drag robs power and torque from your engine. To make horsepower we must reduce the power that the engine takes to run itself. This is a concept that is forever changing. There are many ways to do this and the ring package is the first thing we look at changing to get the results we are looking for. There are many factors to consider in the ring package of today’s performance engine like the face material and cylinder contact shape, radial tension, ring thickness, ring design, ring material, and ring end gap.

When a group's passion for giving back meets their love for cars, incredible things can happen, especially in Sioux Falls’ bustling and evolving car enthusiast community.

The Sioux Falls Noon Sertoma Club is in its fourth year of showcasing their commitment to service right alongside their classic cars. Many of the members have been interested in cars and cruisers for as long as they can remember.

“As a community service club, we are always looking for ways to promote our group and while we are at it try and find ways to raise money to give back to the community,” says Scott Newman, Sertoma Car Show committee member and chairman of the All Abilities Park Project. “We considered many things like golf tournaments, duck races and other fundraisers, but many of our members have an interest in classic cars, so we decided to give the car show a try and see how it goes.”

The Sioux Falls Noon Sertoma Club’s unwavering dedication to Sertoma Park in Sioux Falls is at the forefront of the Sertoma Shine and Show Car Show. The group has embarked on a mission to enhance the all abilities playground in order for it to continue to be used and loved for years to come.

Originating from the club’s heartfelt efforts in the mid 1990’s to establish this inclusive space, the members are now rallying to raise $500k for equipment upgrades and improvements. The vision is clear: to allow the space to continue to be a crown jewel in the community, ensuring that individuals of all abilities from Sioux Falls and beyond can enjoy and thrive in this park for years to come.

“This will make Sertoma Park a summer time destination for people from town and surrounding areas to bring family members of all ages and abilities to come out and enjoy time together,” Scott adds. “We are trying to raise $500K to accomplish this goal. So far, we are about 40% of the way to our goal so we hope the proceeds from the car show and the publicity generated will help keep the project moving forward.”

Throughout the years Sertoma has experienced enthusiasm and support from the local car show community. The first two years of the show were located at Alliance and brought together around 100 cars. Anything with wheels and vehicles in any condition are welcome to participate in the show. This includes all makes and years of cars and motorcycles in all conditions whether original, restored or under construction. If you have something you want to show, the Sertoma Club encourages you to stop by and show it off.

Some recent changes to the schedule of the show have Sertoma members hoping that the cooler weather will allow for more families to come out and attend.

“Last year we moved to the Cars For Sale lot on Lake Lorraine and the numbers were about the same due to cooler temps,” Scott explains. “This year we decided to move our date to a Sunday later in the year to separate us from the many car shows held early in the year. We feel that an August time frame will hopefully provide better weather and give people a family-friendly thing to do on a Sunday in August.”

The show has evolved into a family-friendly event, offering an enjoyable experience for all ages while shining a light on Sertoma’s commitment to service and advocacy for hearing health. Not only does the car show provide an occasion for families to enjoy together, but it has also served as a platform to raise awareness about the club’s dedication to supporting those in need and the importance of hearing health throughout the Sioux Empire.

This year's show will be held Sunday, August 11th and runs from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the west side of Lake Lorraine and Cars For Sale.com in Sioux Falls.

“We have been working with the great people at Lake Lorraine and Cars For Sale.com. The Cars for Sale.com location gives us ample parking for all the classic cars plus close proximity for visitor parking and still gives us room for vendors like food trucks and other family-friendly attractions,” Scott shares.

Those attending this year's show can expect a wide array of different cars with something everyone will love. There will be a DJ, food trucks and other activities as well. The registration for the car show will start at 12:00 pm.

TUNE-IN AND TUNE-UP!®

Dear Motor Medics,

with The Motor Medics ® Shannon Nordstrom, Russ “The Super Tech” Evans, and Chris

I have a 2021 GMC Yukon with a 5.3 engine. The vehicle has 36k miles on it. The warranty expired last week at 36k, and it started making engine noise all the time at about 35,800 miles. I called the dealership where we purchased it, which is a few hundred miles away, and they said bring it in so we can check it. Well, the vehicle passed 36k before we arrived by just a bit, and they said the warranty had expired due to miles. They didn’t say anything about towing it in since it was so close to the expiration, and I don’t know who we talked to on the phone. We paid to have it diagnosed and they say it has failed lifters and a camshaft and that it will be very costly to repair. Is this a common thing and can they just cut us off right at exactly 36k?

Dear Motor Medics,

We have a 2013 Ram 1500 truck with a misfire at 140k miles. We have worked on it ourselves replacing the coils, spark plugs, injectors and fuel pump and it still has a misfire. The scanner we have shows that the misfire is a p0300 Random Misfire and a p0304 and a po306. The misfire starts at higher rpm and at idle it runs perfectly smooth. Can you give us some ideas to look at next?

Dear Kensington,

Yes, this is very common and in fact we own one of these that we had to fix ourselves so we know how much labor is involved and how costly it can be. Some are so bad that the engine must be replaced at a much higher cost. As for the warranty, they sold you a 36k warranty, and that’s what was agreed to. Talk with them or try a different dealership and plead your case. Sometimes they make slight exceptions.

Take care, The Motor Medics

Dear Matt,

When diagnosing a misfire, we first verify with a scan tool that we have a mis the way you have. After getting information such as cylinder number, 4 and 6 in your case by the codes, we inspect those cylinders testing for compression and leakage. If those both are good, we move on to ignition and fuel. In the case of this engine, if all looks good but the misfires are still present, we will pull the valve covers and inspect the rockers to see if the valves are opening all the way. These engines have had some lifer and cam issues which when worn will not allow the valve to fully open, which makes the engine mis at higher rpm but not at idle or low speeds. The repair for this can be anywhere from a cam and lifter swap to an engine replacement if metal shavings have contaminated the engine. Good luck. We hope that you find something small needing repairs.

Take care, The Motor Medics
