Corn Palace THE WORLD’S ONLY

For over 125 years, this beautiful and whimsical community icon has drawn the unusual, the notable, and the road-weary to Mitchell’s Main Street. The World’s Only Corn Palace is a true testament to artistic ingenuity and agricultural pride, undergoing a breathtaking transformation every year. Each summer, a team of dedicated artisans meticulously arranges some 325,000 colorful ears of corn— carefully sliced and nailed into place—to create stunning, larger-than-life murals. This process, which can only be described as “corn-by-numbers,” results in a magnificent display of folk art that celebrates the region’s deep agricultural roots and artistic spirit.
The annual mural redesign is a community-driven endeavor that requires both patience and passion. The corn, available in 13 naturally vibrant colors, is carefully grown and harvested by local Mitchell farmers, ensuring that each

year’s masterpiece is built from the fruits of the region’s labor. Dakota Wesleyan University students lend their creative talents to the project, designing intricate and meaningful murals that reflect cultural themes, historical events, and imaginative concepts. As one mural is carefully removed and another takes shape, the Corn Palace remains in a constant state of reinvention—a process that speaks to the resilience and innovation of the people behind it.
But the transformation doesn’t stop at the murals. The Corn Palace is continuously evolving, with various “corn-struction” projects enhancing the visitor experience both inside and out. A scenic viewing balcony allows guests to admire the murals from a unique vantage point, while the lush Corn Palace Plaza offers a welcoming outdoor space for gatherings and events. Playful, selfieworthy signage and sculptures dot the landscape, making for perfect photo opportunities. Inside, the grand entrance and lobby feature striking Italian-tiled pillars designed to evoke golden ears

of corn, a tribute to the agricultural bounty that has long defined this region.
As visitors wander the main floor, they’ll step into a living history of the Corn Palace, discovering archival images that capture its many transformations over the decades. They’ll also find displays highlighting the world-class performers who have graced the Corn Palace stage—icons ranging from the legendary Lawrence Welk to rock powerhouse Pat Benatar. This legacy of entertainment has cemented the Corn Palace as not just an artistic marvel but
The 2nd exhibit space is dedicated to Oscar Howe, the world-renowned Native American artist who served as the Corn Palace’s longest-running mural designer. His influence is still deeply felt,

as visitors can admire images of the breathtaking murals he created from 1948 to 1971. Howe’s artistic legacy continues to inspire new generations, bridging the past and present through the power of visual storytelling.
Originally built in 1892 as a way to promote the area’s agricultural products—particularly corn—the Corn Palace has since grown into one of South Dakota’s most beloved tourist attractions. It has played host to a diverse array of events, from lively concerts and thrilling sports games to grand festivals that celebrate the region’s heritage. With its quirky, one-of-a-kind charm, the Corn Palace stands as a beacon of creativity, community, and enduring tradition—proof that something as simple as corn can be transformed into a breathtaking work of art that captures the imagination of visitors from around the world.
THE ULTIMATE PHEASANT HUNTING DESTINATION
South Dakota reigns supreme in pheasant hunting, with an astonishing seven million birds spread across five million acres and an annual harvest of one million roosters. This abundance of ringneck pheasants makes the state a premier destination for hunters seeking world-class experiences in the field.
The plains surrounding Mitchell are a magnet for hunters nationwide. Whether seasoned professionals or first-time enthusiasts, visitors can take part in guided hunts, youth hunts, and time-honored traditions that define the sport. Year-round, Mitchell’s locally owned sporting goods stores cater to hunters, archers, and anglers, ensuring they have everything needed for a successful outing. Adding to the appeal, Mitchell’s 80,000-square-foot Cabela’s is more than just a store—it’s a wildlife museum, an aquarium showcasing regional fish, and a hub for the hunting community. The annual Pheasant Classic at Cabela’s brings hunters together with events like the Great American Banded Bird Hunt and special appearances by notable outdoor personalities, such as Benny Spies.
When pheasant season arrives, Mitchell rolls out the red carpet for hunters, embracing them as part of the community. Nowhere is this more evident than at the Pheasant Country Banquet, held on the Friday before opening day at the iconic Corn Palace. This gathering welcomes hunters from across the U.S. and Canada for an evening of camaraderie in a setting adorned with intricate corn murals, celebrating both the sport and the culture that surrounds it. The city’s passion for conservation is equally strong, with the largest Pheasants Forever chapter in the nation working to preserve habitats and ensure a thriving pheasant population for future generations. In Mitchell, pheasant hunting is more than a pastime—it’s a way of life.

A GLIMPSE INTO HISTORY
The Carnegie Resource Center, located just a short walk from the Corn Palace, serves as a perfect complement to any Corn Palace tour. This historic center houses a permanent collection of Corn Palace memorabilia, offering visitors a glimpse into the evolution of Mitchell’s most famous landmark. In addition to these artifacts, the center features a rotating selection of exhibits that highlight various aspects of Mitchell’s history and genealogy, providing a deeper connection to the area’s rich heritage.
A notable feature of the Carnegie Resource Center is the stunning mural shown above, “Sun and Clouds and Rain Over Hills,” painted on the dome by renowned Dakota Yanktonai artist Oscar Howe. This breathtaking piece of art adds cultural significance to the building, which itself holds historical value. Originally constructed as a library in 1903 with funds from steel magnate Andrew Carnegie, the building stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of both its benefactor and the vibrant history it preserves.

DISCOVER THE DAKOTAS
Nestled on the campus of Dakota Wesleyan University, Dakota Discovery is a gateway to the past, where art and artifacts come together to tell the rich and complex story of the Great Plains. This immersive museum offers visitors an in-depth look at the lives of both the Native American tribes who flourished in the region long before European settlers arrived and the pioneers who followed. Through engaging exhibits, Dakota Discovery explores the diverse narratives of hunting, fur trapping and trading, farming, ranching, mining, and religious freedom. Visitors can delve into the profound impact of the fur trade and the Gold Rush, as well as the resilience of the people who shaped the region. Historic structures such as the Dimock Depot, the Farewell Church, and the Beckwith House stand on the museum grounds, preserving the spirit of the past for future generations.
Inside the History Gallery, guests are transported through time, gaining a deeper understanding of the Middle Border Region, which encompasses North Dakota, South Dakota, and parts of neighboring states. The gallery presents an extensive collection of exhibits that illuminate the daily lives and cultural traditions of the Plains Indians, the economic significance of the fur trade, the rapid transformations brought by Dakota Territory’s railroads, and the perseverance of farmers and

ranchers who settled the land. Additionally, visitors can explore the hardships and triumphs of those who lived through the Great Depression of the 1930s, an era that tested the resilience of the Great Plains people.
The Dakota Discovery Historic Village further enhances this journey through history. The Dimock Depot showcases an expanded railroad exhibit, detailing the vital role of the Milwaukee Railroad in local transportation and commerce. The Farewell Church, a simple yet striking structure, reflects the unadorned country worship of the early 20th century. It continues to serve as a gathering place for small group worship, poetry readings, music performances, and even summer weddings. Nearby, the Sheldon School stands as a testament to the homesteading era, offering a glimpse into early education on the Great Plains. The Beckwith House, once home to a co-founder of the World’s Only Corn Palace, built in 1892, provides insight into the vision and determination of the region’s pioneers. Throughout the village, visitors can marvel at an impressive collection of early farm equipment, showcasing the ingenuity and hard work of those who tamed the land.
For art enthusiasts, Dakota Discovery houses three distinct galleries celebrating the artistic heritage of the

Great Plains. The Leland and Josephine Case Art Gallery offers an eclectic collection of artwork from various regional artists, highlighting the unique landscapes and cultures of the plains. The Hargens Gallery pays tribute to Charles Hargens Jr., one of America’s premier illustrators of Western storytelling, whose work captured the spirit of frontier life. The Howe Gallery honors the life and artistic genius of Oscar Howe, a Yanktonai Dakota artist renowned for his groundbreaking contributions to Native American art. His innovative techniques and powerful storytelling continue to inspire generations.
A visit to Dakota Discovery is more than a museum experience— it is a journey through the heart and soul of the Great Plains. Whether exploring history, admiring art, or walking among the preserved structures of the past, visitors leave with a deeper appreciation of the people and events that shaped this remarkable region.

JOEL ALLEN
The Saint John’s Bible
Dakota Wesleyan University is honored to display the Heritage Edition of The Saint John’s Bible in the McGovern Library—a magnificent work that stands as a testament to both artistic genius and spiritual devotion. As the first hand-inscribed and illustrated Bible in over 500 years, the original project represents an extraordinary achievement led by Donald Jackson, scribe to the Queen of England. The Heritage Edition captures the splendor of the original with exceptional printing quality, vivid illuminations, and whimsical animal sketches used to correct the eight rare mistakes, adding a touch of charm. Spanning seven folios, the Bible comprises 1,150 pages, 160 illuminations, and an astonishing 3.5 million hand-drawn letters. More than its grandeur, however, The Saint John’s Bible offers a sacred encounter with scripture, where the beauty of its craftsmanship invites readers to engage with the divine in new and profound ways.
TIM GOLDAMMER
Local Theatre Enthusiast
The Area Community Theatre (ACT) in Mitchell, SD, has been bringing quality live performances to the community for over 26 years. Based at the Pepsi-Cola Theatre for the Performing Arts, ACT is known for its high production values, from stunning lighting to detailed costumes and seamless scene transitions.
With a diverse repertoire, ACT appeals to all theatrical tastes. Their production of You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown was especially nostalgic—though I may be biased, having played Charlie Brown myself!
As a nonprofit, ACT is dedicated to accessibility and inclusivity, ensuring the arts remain a vital part of Mitchell. Through volunteer recognition and engaging performances, ACT continues to be a cultural cornerstone in the community.
