Euro Skills, Black Hills Soul SVEN & LANIJO OSUSKY

Sven and LaniJo Osusky own SoDak AutoHaus in Rapid City, a European-specialty auto repair shop known for the kind of customer care that makes people feel safe when handing over their keys. Their shop is new to the area, but their expertise is not. Sven brings more than 35 years of experience as an ASE Master Certified Technician, with a career that began in Slovakia and ultimately led to him owning his own European Auto Repair shop in Spokane, WA. LaniJo brings three decades of customer service experience and a lifelong love of beautiful cars. Together, they’ve created a business built on trust, craftsmanship, and the belief that doing the job right is the only way to do it at all.

After owning and operating a similar shop in Spokane, WA they decided to sell the business and move out of state. Many things led to this decision, but the main driving forces were the dramatic increase in crime and drug use in the area their shop and the increasing business tax hikes they experienced every year. Prior to moving to Rapid City, Sven had only lived in Washington state since coming to the US so was ready for a change and eager to discover a new area.

The next step was deciding where.

“We talked it out and considered many things, with the primary question being ‘What would we do for work’?”

LaniJo commented, “Initially Sven thought he’d stop turning wrenches, but then we started putting plans in place it made sense for him to stick to what he has always done and possibly open another shop.” After doing extensive market research and considering places in Montana and Tennessee, LaniJo suggested a week’s vacation in the Black Hills. “I was raised in Eastern Montana and spent a lot of time vacationing and recreating here over the years and had a sense Sven would love it.” Sven fell in love with the area and said it reminded him of Slovakia.

Sven agrees, saying “I grew up in the mountains in Slovakia and always liked going camping, skiing and mountain biking.

Rapid City offers all of this and more, making it a great place to settle and being so close to LaniJo’s family makes it all the better.” “The smaller town was also very appealing, and people here are down to earth. We both felt we could “throw our anchor” here and make it our forever home” LaniJo commented.

“We have felt very welcome here and love the business environment of South Dakota in general” says Sven. “Yes, rather than feeling frustrated and helpless with how state legislation effects your business and bottom dollar, we feel appreciated and understood by South Dakota’s law makers and our customers.” LaniJo chimed in. Sven agreed saying, “Yes, we just love South Dakota and really have the best customers!”

Their love for cars started long before they started working in the auto repair business. LaniJo’s started on Sunday drives growing up. “My dad instilled in me a love of cars,” she says. “We used to go “window shopping” for cars every Sunday afternoon. My dad, sister and I would drive around and stop at every car lot in Glendive and peer in the windows… ooing and awing over what we each liked. Of course my dad, as a mechanic, would have to look under the hood but for me and my sister, we were all about how the car looked and made us feel. In high school, my cheerleading coach had a cute red BMW and I was like, ‘oh my gosh!’ It was a step above any other car I had seen, and I became a big Euro fan from that point forward.”

When Sven was growing up, he shares that he always liked anything mechanical. “I would take things apart and put them back together for fun. I built my first bicycle from buying and gathering parts. When I finished high school at 14, I had to decide what I wanted to do professionally, so I went to a mechanic school for 3 ½ years. I worked with a lot of guys who had great knowledge, and I learned all the diagnostic processes from them.” When Sven moved to the US his step-dad gave him a great piece of advise that he followed: “If you continue working on cars, work on European cars, they are the best and plus, you are European!” Sven started working after school at a Mercedes dealership in Seattle in 89’ and has worked on European cars ever since.

LaniJo says her dad and Sven have a special bond that has only grown with them living closer to her parents. “They can talk about cars till the cows come home and have a high respect for one another. For me it’s wonderful to see my dad light up at age 86 and talk cars with him now even more than before.”

Between them, they have a blended family of six children and eleven grandchildren, with another one on the way in late September. Family is woven into everything they do, from their decision to relocate to the Black Hills to the way they spend their weekends. Camping is one of their greatest joys, especially when they can take their grandkids along.

“We love to camp, so having that right in your backyard is really special,” LaniJo shares.

Running a business together has been surprisingly natural for them. “We actually work together really well, because we know we’re on the same team,” she says. “We comment on that quite a bit because it can be challenging being and working together 24/7.” Sven agrees. They both laugh when Sven adds, “You might want to ask our coworkers about that though!” Sven adds, “For me, the thing that makes all the difference is we both have this high regard and respect for one another and what we each bring to the table.”

As the sales advisor, LaniJo’s confidence in selling their services to their customers is her confidence in Sven’s ability to do what he says he can do. “I have such admiration for him,” she says. “It’s been really fun to have a front-row seat watching him approach complex problems and explain things to customers.

It’s increased my respect for him by working right alongside him.” Sven adds, “I think the biggest thing we have is grace for each other because we know what the intent is, and that’s how we get across a lot of hurdles.”

Their shared values shape the culture of SoDak AutoHaus.

“Doing the right job is having confidence in the diagnosis and then performing the job we said we’ll do,” Sven says. “There is no skipping. If my mom asked me to repair her car, that’s how I would do it for anyone. There is no looking at it as something that can’t be fixed.” LaniJo echoes the sentiment. “Doing the right job means taking the time to diagnose it fully, even if it’s challenging. We’re not just taking a stab at it. We present the customer with the right repair and cost estimate, not a guess.”

Communication is also one of the pillars of their business.

“I care deeply about people, and I’ve been in customer service my whole life,” she says. “A car is part of their livelihood, their safety, their freedom. For me, all of those things give a measure of having more of an obligation to make sure customers know that the repairs are being done correctly so they can get back on the road. We probably over-communicate because we want them to be informed and have peace of mind.”

Sven’s diagnostic abilities are legendary among their customers. Known as an “auto detective,” he approaches problems with persistence and creativity. “There are a lot of cars that have given me fits,” he says, “but the biggest thing is sticking with it and approaching it from different angles until you figure it out.” LaniJo adds, “Some shops say a problem can’t be fixed or is beyond their capabilities.

Sven, Nathan, McKenzy, Amanda and our whole crew don’t give up. They’re not going to stop until they figure it out.”

Their specialization in European vehicles sets SoDak AutoHaus apart. “Modern vehicles have so many 12

electrical components and features, that sometimes a car owner doesn’t even know what they have,” Sven says.

“Specialization hones our skills. We work on these makes every day, so we know and understand them.”

Beyond the shop, the Osuskys are community minded and have become part of the local car scene. They’ve partnered with Deadwood to host two German car shows that bring European-car enthusiasts together. “People love car shows here,” she says, “but many are domestic, which makes sense. But now they’re having fun being able to show off their BMW, Porsche, or Ferrari locally. We’ve met a lot of cool people in the area, and we’re helping to create a European car culture that we hope continues to grow.”

At the heart of everything is gratitude. “We’re very thankful to be here and to be able to bring this type of service to Rapid City,” Sven says. “People appreciate us and that feels good.”

5 THINGS ABOUT SVEN & LANIJO OSUSKY

LaniJo is an avid reader with a passion for historical fiction and non-fiction, and she also loves adventure, having gone skydiving and absolutely loved the experience.

One of LaniJo’s most memorable experiences was attending George Jones’ funeral in Nashville. As a famous country music singer, Jones wanted his fans to be part of the service when he passed away. LaniJo went by herself, arrived early, and stood in line to attend. She describes it as one of the most amazing experiences of her life.

Sven was a competitive flat-water kayaker who tried out for the 1992 U.S. Olympic team, finishing 7th—just one spot shy of an alternate position.

Sven immigrated to the United States in 1989 to escape living under a Communist regime and is a proud American citizen.

Sven and LaniJo’s favorite activities include camping in their Vanagon, exploring local breweries, and listening to live music.

additional events. The Full March & Marathon begins at 8:00 a.m. from the Rochford Trailhead, following the historic 26.2-mile route to the Days of ‘76 Rodeo

Grounds in Deadwood. Individuals, military teams, civilian teams, and relay participants are supported

by well-stocked rest stations every three to five miles, providing food, refreshments, encouragement, and camaraderie throughout the day.

The Mini March, a 16-mile trek begins at 10:00 a.m. from the Dumont Trailhead. Participants travel the

scenic Mickelson Trail through historic Deadwood before celebrating their accomplishment at the finish line.

The impact doesn’t end when participants cross the finish line. Each year, funds raised through the Black

Hills Veterans March & Marathon are donated to organizations across South Dakota that provide vital

services and support to veterans and their families.

In 2025, proceeds from the event benefited six outstanding organizations:

Each September, communities across the country pause to recognize an important part of senior living through National Assisted Living Week®. Established by the National Center for Assisted Living (NCAL) in 1995, the annual observance celebrates the residents, caregivers, families, volunteers, and communities that make assisted living such a meaningful part of the aging journey.

Today’s assisted living communities focus on more than care needs alone. They strive to create an environment where residents can continue living life to the fullest, with the reassurance that support is available whenever it is needed.

Assisted living is a familiar term, but not everyone understands what it means. Assisted living is designed for individuals who value their independence but could benefit from some 30

It is not about giving up independence. In many ways, it is about preserving it.

Beyond practical support, assisted living offers something many older adults are looking for: connection. Social events, shared meals, wellness activities, and everyday interactions help foster meaningful relationships and help combat the isolation that

can sometimes accompany aging. For families, assisted living can provide peace of mind knowing their loved one is safe, supported, and engaged in a vibrant community.

One of the most common questions individuals and their families face is, “How do I know if it’s the right time to consider assisted living?” While every situation is unique, it can be helpful to consider a few questions: • Is managing daily household responsibilities becoming stressful or overwhelming?

• Have concerns such as missed medications, difficulty keeping up with daily tasks, or other safety issues become more frequent?

• Is loneliness or social isolation affecting quality of life?

• Would having support nearby provide greater confidence and peace of mind?

There is a lot to be said for doing things the way they have always been done. In a community like ours, tradition is part of what makes this place special. At the same time, the world around us is changing and so is the way people receive information.

The challenge for businesses, organizations and community leaders is finding the sweet spot between the two.

So how do we use the traditional methods that have worked for generations while also taking advantage of today’s technology?

Maybe it starts with three simple questions:Who? When? Where?

Once we know what people need to know, the next question is: How do we get that information to them?

We live in a little slice of heaven, and it seems like everyone is looking to be a part of it. People are moving here from all over, often saying the same things. They love the traditions, the small-town feel, the safety and the ability for their kids to play outside.

For businesses, organizations and the Chamber, we have to recognize that people do not all consume information the same way. If we want to reach our entire community, we have to communicate in more than one way.

Neither side is wrong.

The opportunity is in bringing the two together.

Yes, social media, videos and digital tools are important. But what about the person with the flip phone? The family that isn’t online? Or the person who has intentionally chosen to unplug?

The community bulletin board still matters.

So does the flyer in a local business, a newspaper ad, a sign in a window or simply telling your neighbor what’s happening. There is room for all of it.

BREAKING WORKPLACE DISABILITY BARRIERS: TWO NDEAM TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES IN 2026 Every workplace has policies, procedures, and expectations intended to keep the organization running smoothly.

But sometimes those same systems can unintentionally create barriers for employees with disabilities.

During National Disability Employment Awareness Month, the Workplace Disability Network of the Black Hills is offering two opportunities to participate in Breaking Barriers: Hayden’s Story: This interactive training gives employers, supervisors, human resource professionals, vocational rehabilitation professionals, and community partners an opportunity to examine the workplace from the perspective of an employee seeking support.

Rather than listening to a traditional presentation, participants work through a realistic workplace scenario facilitated by Erin Grant with Black Hills Special Services Cooperative.

The experience follows Hayden, an employee managing mental health

disability, as she tries to communicate her needs and request accommodation.

Along the way, participants encounter policies, paperwork, conversations, and workplace responses that can either support success or complicate the process.

Workplace barriers are not always physical or easy to recognize. They can show up in communication practices, job expectations, accommodation procedures, forms, schedules, technology, or in the way someone responds when an employee asks for help.

A process may seem straightforward to the person who created it, but confusing to the employee trying to use it. An unclear form, delayed response, lack of communication, or uncertainty about whom to contact can make it harder for an employee to get the support needed to do the job successfully. Hayden’s Story asks participants to consider an important question: Are our workplace processes as easy to navigate for employees as we think they are?

Through Hayden’s experience, participants encounter a series of workplace barriers and see how those barriers can make an already difficult situation more frustrating, confusing, or discouraging. After the exercise, the group reflects on what happened, how the experience felt, and which workplace practices contributed to those challenges.

That discussion helps participants connect the experience back to their own organizations and consider where similar barriers may exist in their policies, communication, or day-to-day processes.

Many employers want to support employees with disabilities but may be unsure what to do when an employee discloses a disability or asks for accommodation. An accommodation request does not always begin with formal paperwork or the words, “I need an accommodation.” An employee may simply explain that a medical condition is making part of the job difficult or that a change in schedule, communication, equipment, or work process would help them complete an essential task.

Supervisors and human resource professionals need to recognize when that conversation may be the beginning of an accommodation request and understand what should happen next.

chronic illnesses, hearing or vision loss, learning disabilities, neurological conditions, mobility limitations, or other disabilities while also bringing valuable skills, experience, and knowledge to their organizations.

Confidentiality is also an important part of the accommodation process.

Coworkers may need to understand a change in workflow or responsibilities, but they generally do not need personal information about another employee’s disability. Employees are more likely to ask for support when they trust that their information will be handled appropriately.

When workplace systems are difficult to navigate, employers may lose good employees over barriers that could have been addressed.

Removing unnecessary barriers can help businesses retain experienced employees, improve communication, strengthen workplace processes, and reduce preventable turnover.

The training also reinforces an important point: Workplace accommodations are not about lowering performance expectations.

They are about identifying reasonable changes that enable a qualified employee to perform the job’s essential functions.

Why This Training Matters Having a written accommodation policy is important, but a policy is only useful if employees know how to use it and the people responsible for carrying it out know what to do.

Employees with disabilities are already part of our workforce, and many disabilities are not immediately apparent.

C

onsidering her career as both a portrait artist and the owner of a successful cosmetic tattoo studio, it may come as a surprise that Desiré Jansen was 31 years old before she seriously picked up an artist’s pencil.

For Desiré, it was about more than just learning a craft. Evolving as an artist required her to wrestle with her creative identity and confront some painful seasons of life.

Growing up as the daughter of a free-spirited artist, Desiré always leaned into creative pursuits, but she found herself avoiding drawing.

Her father, who passed away earlier this year from cancer, was a professional artist who produced Native American and Western art through colored pencil realism.

“He was a bit nomadic and would move us around South Dakota, wherever he thought the art would hit. My dad was a very spiritual guy, your typical free, colorful, mad artist—almost a bit wacky, the life of every party,” she shares.

Her mom, on the other hand, was a strict Catholic, which she says made for an interesting dynamic.

“She brought faith and prayer, and my dad brought colorful chaos and fun,” Desiré explains.

Though he naturally nurtured her artistic side, Desiré was determined to make her own way of it.

“We had an interesting relationship, and I didn’t ever want to do art because he was doing it, so I dove into theater as a kid,” she adds.

After spending her first year of college at the University of South Dakota as a theater major, she moved to Miami to pursue film acting, taking various acting workshops and intensives. Though she credits her time in Florida as a stepping stone and learning opportunity,

she also faced intense personal challenges while there because of an abusive relationship.

“I was super fearless when I was 19,” she states. “I met this guy by chance while on vacation in Florida, and three months later, I moved there with him.”

The relationship lasted seven months before Desiré made the decision to leave. Looking back, she says she was in an unhealthy place to have ignored numerous violent and threatening episodes.

“That’s one thing I want people to know, if I can be a mirror to anyone reading this—take the red flags and warning signs seriously,” Desiré advises.

Fortunately, she escaped that situation, but leaving Florida marked the beginning of another difficult chapter.

Desiré soon found herself back in South Dakota under tragic circumstances. She had just reconnected with her high school best friend, AJ, and the two were gauging whether their relationship might evolve into something more than friendship when he died in a motorcycle accident.

She bought a one-way ticket back home to be near AJ’s mother, and she moved back in with her parents—a complicated dynamic after the taste of adulthood she had experienced in Florida.

“I had so much freedom there, and even just as a waitress, I was making so much money. Back home, everything was a struggle. I did everything from hotel laundry to working at what felt like every restaurant in the city, and I was really at rock bottom,” she shares.

Over those years of struggle, Desiré says her mom was her biggest cheerleader and support system and even helped her get a job in the human resources department at Smithfield. That job ended up being the turning point for Desiré, though not in the way one might expect.

“The director brought me in one day and told me, ‘If you call in sick one more day, you’re fired.’ That was a wake-up call and a sign I needed to grow up,” she recalls.

“I just realized I was going nowhere fast. I had already been fired from another job, had tons of broken relationships, and was making a fool of myself. I lived really loud in my early twenties, and I’m always so thankful when people from that time of my life show me grace,” she continues.

In the midst of it all, Desiré met her husband, Joel, at age 22.

“We got married pretty quickly, while we were both in that spin cycle of chaos,” she adds. “If he were here, he’d say we were just being 20-somethings; I’d say we were living hard and taking full advantage of those years.”

After her wake-up call, Desiré and Joel committed to start living a different life. Both of them had fallen away from the church by then, but over time, they reengaged their faith and began building a more stable foundation for their family, thanks to key friendships and people who have mentored them as individuals and a couple.

Several years later, with a stronger footing beneath her, Desiré found herself returning to the very thing she’d resisted for years. Despite the complicated nature of their relationship, her father remained an important creative influence.

“My dad was going to teach this art class, but no one signed up. So, I told him I’d take it to take advantage of the hours he’d set aside and poured into it, and that’s when I fell in love,” she explains.

Desiré picked up the technique with ease and says she quickly became obsessed, beginning with graphite pencil and powder and then moving to charcoal.

In just a year or two, she had built up quite a portfolio of portrait work and had a healthy hobby business selling original work and commissioned pieces.

“That five-year plan turned into, ‘You’ve got one week to decide if you want this, or it’s gone.’”

Today, Gemineye Studio is one of the busiest cosmetic tattoo studios in the country, right here in Sioux Falls, with clients traveling from states away for services and students enrolling in Gemineye Academy, Desiré’s platform for beginner and advanced nano brow training.

“When I first got into it, the artistic side was what drew me to it. I wasn’t involved in the beauty industry at the time, and I didn’t understand all the other beautiful and emotional things that come along with this work,” she continues.

“SOMETIMES FINDING YOUR OWN VOICE MEANS RETURNING TO THE THING YOU ONCE TRIED TO AVOID.”

After having her first child —she and Joel now have a son and daughter, ages 8 and 11— Desiré realized that she couldn’t keep up with drawing on the side while working her full-time job, and that’s when she discovered microblading and cosmetic tattooing on Instagram.

“I remember thinking, ‘This is so cool, I could totally do that. I’m drawing eyebrows already,’” she smiles.

Her friend connected her to a landlord who had a studio space that matched Desiré’s vision exactly.

She describes cancer survivors who get their eyebrows back after feeling like so much has been taken from them, as well as clients who have become some of her closest friends.

“There are so many tears shed in my studio, and I didn’t expect that going into it.”

Still, she says it doesn’t quite scratch enough of her artistic itch. Lately, she’s had the opportunity to take on speaking engagements where she draws live on stage as she speaks.

“I’m usually able to finish a piece in about 45 minutes while I share parts of my story, and at the end, the finished work gets donated or auctioned off,” she explains.

For Desiré, it’s been cathartic to return to art in this way.

Desiré traveled to Los Angeles for training, and then returned to work under someone else for a while before pursuing her own studio. What started as a five-year plan came to fruition just six months later, when she got a serendipitous opportunity to take over a downtown studio space.

“I think the evolution of getting back into my artistic side is kind of a celebration of the way I was raised,” she notes.

“My dad and I had a very complicated relationship, and in some ways, he was competitive with me. Since he passed, it’s almost like something was lifted off me, and I can really just run with it. I don’t have to worry about what he’s going to say about it anymore. I can just create.”

“I had this dream about a studio with west-facing windows and brick, and I was sitting at coffee with a friend telling her all about it, when she picked up her phone and went, ‘Hey Rick, got anything available right now?’”

After years spent trying to define her creative identity, Desiré has finally drawn her own lines—not in opposition to where she came from, but as an expression of who she has become.

Clients have traveled all the way from New Jersey and Florida, to Montana and Texas and everywhere in between for training and to get their brows done at Gemineye Studio.

Desiré used to travel around the nation shooting trap (shooting a shotgun at clay targets) and was taught by one of the Queen of England’s shooting instructors when she was 14.

When she’s not at work, Desiré enjoys traveling the world, immersing herself in other cultures and learning anything and everything from the locals in as many countries as possible.

Her most popular drawing (the one she has a print of) is her third drawing ever. Desiré had never picked up a pencil, and about two weeks later, she drew “Wonder,” which is the girl with all the freckles. She says that to showcase how amazing her dad was at teaching her how to draw. He was a phenomenal teacher.

Desiré’s happy places are anywhere near an ocean, tucked deep into the mountains, or on a road trip in an RV. VOLUME

eadwood has never been shy about its legends. From Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane to the Gold Rush and the brothels, the town wears its history proudly. But beyond the famous stories and bustling Main Street, Deadwood is home to some hidden gems offering a different kind of adventure: one built on curiosity, craftsmanship, and the fun of discovering something unexpected.

Start at the Deadwood History & Information Center located at 3 Siever Street, where one of the city’s most delightful surprises sits just inside the door: a sprawling historic diorama that captures Deadwood in its early boomtown days during the 1870s when it was still a mix of canvas tents and wood buildings. Free to view and meticulously detailed, it’s the kind

of display that pulls you in slowly and helps visitors understand aspects of Deadwood’s past. It’s free, open year-round from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and is a perfect primer for everything you’ll see next.

A short walk away, tucked into the basement level at 614 Main Street, the Deadwood Central Model Railroad is one of the most joyful surprises in town. Operated by the Northern Hills Railway Society, this miniature world is free to explore, and for just $1, you can run the trains yourself for 10 full minutes.

The layout is intricate, whimsical, and built with the kind of devotion only true hobbyists can muster. It’s a hidden haven for families, train lovers, and anyone who appreciates the charm of tiny towns with big personality.

Deadwood’s Adams Museum at 54 Sherman Street is known for its eclectic collection, but one artifact stands out as a true one-of-a-kind wonder: a rare marine reptile specimen from the age of the dinosaurs unlike anything else in the region. It’s the kind of discovery that makes visitors stop midstride, a reminder that Deadwood’s history stretches far beyond the Gold Rush and deep into prehistoric time. The museum itself is a treasure chest of curiosities, but this fossil is a quiet superstar in a town full of larger-than-life characters.

Deadwood’s hidden gems reward the wanderers who take the time to look a little closer.

Right across the street, near the spot where Wild Bill Hickok is believed to have first camped in 1876, stands a striking granite bust honoring the legend carved by Korczak Ziolkowski — the visionary artist behind the Crazy Horse Memorial and a former sculptor on Mount Rushmore. Commissioned by Deadwood businessman George Hunter and unveiled during the town’s 75th anniversary celebration in 1951, the bust, carved with Black Hills granite, is a powerful piece of Black Hills history. It’s easy to miss if you’re not looking for it, but once you find it, you’ll feel the weight of legacy in its stone features.

By car, tour bus, or the city steps located behind the Deadwood Recreation & Aquatic Center, you can reach the Mount Moriah Cemetery, made famous for its two most iconic residents, Wild Bill and Calamity Jane. MAKING MEANINGFUL CONNECTIONS

For many artists, a blank canvas marks the start of something new. For South Dakota artist Stephen Randall, it’s also a way to preserve memories, landscapes, and the stories that make this state feel like home.

canyons form a backdrop for fields, forests, rivers, lakes, and ponds that frame the daily life of South Dakotans. The state’s cities and towns carry their own historical perspectives, he notes, worth preserving with pen and paint again and again.

A former combat artist for the U.S. Army in Vietnam, Stephen’s journey as an artist has taken him from documenting his military experiences to painting the vast landscapes of South Dakota.

Along the way, he realized that art is about more than painting what you see; it’s about capturing the stories, memories and emotions that make a place meaningful.

While many artists rely on photographs as references, Stephen prefers plein air painting, or painting outdoors whenever possible. Standing in the middle of a landscape allows him to notice details that a camera simply can’t recreate.

“I learned fast what it takes to make art in the field,” Stephen explains. “How to sketch, paint, and journal what I experienced with accuracy, but also with personal expression.”

Those lessons have remained with him throughout his career and continue to shape the way he paints on location in the fields of South Dakota, where every season offers a new perspective.

“I enjoy standing in the open air, feeling the sun and the time of day, and painting all of that into what I’m seeing,” he explains.

Being outdoors helps Stephen notice the little things that often go unnoticed in a photograph. From the way the light changes throughout the day to the mood of the landscape, those details help tell the story and feeling behind each painting.

That love for painting outdoors is one reason Stephen looks forward to the Harvey Dunn Plein Air Painting Event in De Smet, South Dakota, every August. Accompanied by his wife, Stephen joins fellow artists for a weekend of painting, friendship and celebrating South Dakota’s history.

These moments remind Stephen that art often becomes much more than a painting hanging on a wall. It becomes a connection to memories, people, and places that might otherwise fade with time.

Stephen takes particular pride in two milestones from his career: His paintings from military service are included in the Army Art Collection at the U.S. Army Center of Military History, and three of his paintings are part of the South Dakota Art for State Buildings collection.

Participants spend time painting buildings and distant views at the Ingalls Homestead. Evenings are just as memorable, with fiddlers providing music and a chuckwagon-style meal as the sun sets over the prairie. On Sunday, artists gather at the Event Center to show their paintings, which visitors can view and purchase.

For Stephen, that recognition and the stories collectors share are what make every painting worthwhile.

Whether he’s in the Black Hills, along a quiet prairie stream or on a historic street, each canvas is a chance to preserve a piece of South Dakota’s story. And as long as there are new places to explore and stories to tell, he’ll keep picking up his sketchbook and paintbrush, one landscape at a time.

For Stephen, however, the greatest reward isn’t simply finishing another painting. It’s seeing how deeply his artwork connects with the people who view it.

Over the years, countless collectors have shared personal stories after recognizing familiar places in his work. One farmer purchased a painting of a seed mill because he drove his grain truck there every harvest. A woman recognized a Black Hills stream near Silver City as the place where her husband proposed, while her daughter remembered it as the secret spot she escaped to as a child.

Another painting, featuring a wrecked Pontiac with a bullet hole through the windshield near Lead, found its way to the mechanic who had once towed and restored the car.

Running Toward Hope and Healing

FOUR DAYS. TWELVE RUNNERS. 437 MILES. ONE MISSION.

What began as a spark in 2022 has grown into one of South Dakota's most powerful movements for physical and mental wellness, purpose, unity, and hope. The 437 Project, a four-day, 437-mile relay run across the state, emerged from a realization by then-Sioux Falls Mayor Paul TenHaken: after COVID-19, people were struggling and needed more connection than ever amid declining mental health and rising political unrest and uncertainty. As co-founder Kelly Marshall explains, "He gathered a group of 11 other local business leaders and runners, and the 437 Project was born."

Today, the project is a statewide force for good. On September 17, 13 runners and a team of volunteers will begin their relay on the west side of South Dakota and head eastward through changing weather, rolling terrain, and welcoming communities—all to raise awareness and critical funds for mental health. In four years, the event has raised over $1 million for organizations including Avera Behavioral Health and Live Inspired 365, and has become the largest donor year after year to the Helpline Center.

"The 437 Project exists to bring awareness to the connection between mental and physical health," Kelly shares.

"For me, mental and physical health have always been connected. I've been a runner for several decades, and it's been a way for me to manage my own mental health. It helps clear my mind when I'm feeling anxious and overwhelmed."

The 437 Project recently became an independent 501(c)(3), reflecting that it now requires year-long planning, fundraising, and donor stewardship.

Runners are selected in December and soon begin training and fundraising. The select group of 13 runners met in April at a retreat to bond before the run.

2026 runner Carly Heard wasn't an athlete growing up. "I was in my mid-20s and just thought maybe I should start taking care of myself." Since then, she's run three 50Ks, 13 marathons, 44 half marathons, and six World Marathon Majors, earning her sixth star in Tokyo.

This year's run carries a profound meaning for Carly, who applied to honor her mother, who died by suicide ten years ago. "I set myself up to be disappointed because at least 100 people apply each year, so I'm super happy to be one of the runners for a cause that is so close to my heart." She says the run will push her forward in her healing: "It forces me to talk about something often difficult to say out loud." Her family reminds her that her mom "would be so proud."

At the April retreat, Carly felt the energy of a team bonded by purpose: "Each runner has such a different why, and it's very inspiring to be around them."

Two other runners shared their hopes. Lake County Sheriff Sarina Talich states, "I am excited to be part of The 437 Project to get more and more people talking about mental health and breaking down the stigma, one conversation at a time."

Scheels store leader Dan Hermanson adds, "I most want people to know that there are others struggling, and no one has to struggle in silence. There are resources available and people who care."

Kelly offers a simple call to action: "Follow The 437 Project as we make our way across the state. Meet the runners, listen to their stories, and share in the journey!"

One of the most exciting times of year for fashion is the transition into fall clothing. Temperatures are dropping, and the need for layers and warmer pieces begins. I personally love this season the most because you can really showcase your individual style more. For many, that means adding textiles, prints and jackets that express personal style more than a pair of shorts and a tank top. Here are the top trends to watch for fall.

Statement bottoms: A trend that has been hot all year is carrying over into fall. “Fun bottoms,” or statement bottoms, are still going to be hot for this season. We’ll see a lot of balloon leg silhouettes, wide legs, prints and patterns, fall textiles and cropped lengths being some of my personal favorites I’ll be shopping for. We’ve always built our outfits around our tops, and this trend allows you to do the opposite: prioritize your bottoms first.

Lace: The pops of lace that used to be on the top of every tank top, bottom hemline, and on scoop-neck tees are returning. Beyond tops, we’ll also see lace on the bottoms of skirts, wide-leg relaxed crop pants and more.

Stripes and rugby shirts: The return of the “prepster” vibes that every millennial can relate to is back. Stripes will be hotter than ever, as you’ll see them appear in classic pieces like t-shirts, but also in cardigans, jackets and sweaters. Polos, collars, and funnel necks are also making a comeback alongside this trend.

Jacket refresh for the bomber and barn jacket: We haven’t seen the bomber jacket for a few seasons, so think of a modern silhouette on a classic with more of a cropped length and relaxed fit. The barn jacket will showcase more

than just a tan jacket with a brown collar. We’ll see a variety of textures, colors and prints in this jacket.

Espresso brown: the true “it” color for fall.

We’ve seen variations of brown each fall, but this year, specifically look for that dark, rich brown you’d see when looking at an espresso bean. Other trending colors are burgundy, gray, blues, aquamarine, and oxblood.

Winter weddings have a magic all their own. Snow-covered landscapes, candlelit ceremonies, and cozy details create celebrations that feel romantic and unforgettable, but the season also brings challenges couples don’t always anticipate.

Weather can change quickly. Roads can become difficult, and guests who planned to attend may not make it safely. A couple might plan for 250 guests and wake up on the big day with only half able to come after preparing and paying for all 250.

To ease the sadness that often accompanies these moments, the Sioux Falls VA Health Care System offers a remarkable program called Wishes for Heroes. The program helps fulfill a final wish by a Veteran in their last weeks or days, bringing them a cherished smile.

The wishes vary. It can be as simple as a Corvette ride, a cup of coffee from their favorite coffee shop, or traveling to their cabin to enjoy the fresh air one last time with their friends and family.

“Since helping with this program in 2013, I have always been impressed with the request of what is truly important to our Veterans. It doesn’t have to be an elaborate wish, but more often than not, it’s rather simply request like spending time with our loved ones, or getting a cup of coffee from their favorite barista down the street,” states Cameron Will, Sioux Falls VA 78

Health Care System recreational therapist. “What I have learned is that relationships matter and being able to check off one more item on their bucket list is truly important.”

The program is a collaborative effort, uniting departments across the Sioux Falls VA Health Care System, including nursing, chaplains, and social workers, as well as nutrition and food services. The team is truly committed to putting Veterans first, going above and beyond to ensure each wish is fulfilled.

Wishes for Heroes is not only for the Veterans, but also for their families and friends. Seeing their beloved Veteran smile one last time brings comfort and healing to those who matter most.

Known for its commitment to addressing the workforce needs in South Dakota, Lake Area Technical College answered the call once again in the fall 2025 with the launch of its Associate of Applied Science in Social Work program.

As communities across the state continue to face shortages of qualified professionals in social services, behavioral health, victim advocacy, case management, and related fields, LATC stepped forward to partner with employers to develop a program that directly addresses the state’s growing needs.

“Being the first institution in South Dakota to offer an Associate of Applied Science in Social Work reflects Lake Area Tech’s commitment to leading instead of reacting. Rather than waiting for workforce shortages to worsen, we partnered with industry leaders and state partners to create an innovative program that addresses a critical need while expanding educational opportunities for students,” states Janelle Wishard, associate social work instructor. “This program exemplifies what Lake Area Tech does best, identifying workforce demands 80

and building high-quality, affordable programs that provide students with direct pathways to meaningful careers.”

The result is an innovative, workforce-focused program that provides students with an affordable, accessible pathway into a high-demand career while helping meet critical workforce hardships across health care, behavioral health, schools, and community service organizations.

According to Janelle, what makes the program unique is that it’s the first of its kind in South Dakota.

“The state law recognizes associate-level social work licensure, creating a unique opportunity for graduates to enter the social work profession with an Associate of Applied Science degree,”

Janelle explains. Upon graduation, students are eligible to apply to the South Dakota Board of Social Work Examiners to take the licensing examination. After successfully passing the exam, graduates may obtain Social Work Associate credentials, allowing them to practice within the scope of their license while working alongside licensed social work professionals.

Workforce projections indicate demand for Social and Human Service Assistants in the state is expected to increase significantly over the next decade.

“This program is timely and essential, providing South Dakota employers with trained professionals who are equipped to support individuals, families, and communities throughout the state,” Janelle shares. “By creating a pathway for students to enter the workforce more quickly while still providing opportunities for continuing education, the program helps address critical staffing shortages and strengthens the state’s human services workforce.”

The Associate of Applied Science in Social Work program combines classroom instruction, hands-on learning, and field experience to prepare students for professional practice, with coursework completed over four semesters and 67.5 credits required for graduation.

In another effort to help meet the needs of South Dakota’s workforce, LATC will begin to offer the Associate of Social Work program in a fully online format beginning in fall 2027.

“This expansion will increase access for students who are unable to attend classes on campus while still providing a high-quality and affordable educational experience,” Janelle adds.

The program will also include an embedded Community Health Worker Certificate, providing graduates with an additional credential that is highly valued by healthcare and community-based employers.
