TURNING OUTWARD AND UPWARD

As she approached her sixtieth birthday a few years ago, Becky Blue began seriously reflecting on what it means to age well.

Part of that process involved writing and publishing a book, titled “Turning: The Magic and Mystery of More Days,” which came out in 2022 and will soon be released in hardcover.

In the book, Becky frames life as a three-act play, where each act is, of course, essential to the story. Though she doesn’t deny that aging can bring about new challenges, including physical ailments, grief and loss, or feelings of invisibility and loneliness, she rejects the idea that the third act of life should be boring, repetitive or mark the end of adventure.

“We get to choose how we age,” is a mantra she repeats often and hopes can be inspiring to others who are entering their third acts.

“My mission right now is to change the culture of aging, but I know I can’t do that alone. If we want to change the culture, we have to begin by telling different stories — about ourselves and others.”

The words we ascribe to ourselves can be powerful, she emphasizes, noting that her friends have learned not to use common turns of phrase, like “I’m just old,” or “I’m too old,” around her.

Words and writing have always been a driving force in Becky’s life. She points back to the passion she had for creative writing in middle and high school and says she likely would have become a writer or journalist had she not lost her mother, a high school English teacher, to breast cancer at age 16.

That experience turned her to a career in nursing, and she says she has enjoyed looking back and connecting the dots of her life, seeing the ways that both her passion for writing and her career in caregiving have sketched a beautiful, cohesive picture.

Becky met her husband, Dan, while attending Augustana College (now University), and they both went on to have successful careers in healthcare. Their shared vocation has given them a valuable perspective that Becky says has defined their way of life.

“Working in healthcare, you are right in front of life and death most days, and even though it can be difficult, the silver lining is that it gives you an amazing insight into what matters most, how precious life is, and how life can turn on a dime,” Becky says.

With that in mind, she says that she and Dan live “very much in the present.”

“I know couples who sit down and plan out a three-year calendar of their goals and where they’re going to go on vacation, but we just try to live day to day while keeping our eyes open to the opportunities in front of us. We’re not afraid to say yes to things, as long as it fits into our foundation of faith and community, and I think that has made our life really fun and interesting,” Becky reflects.

When their four children, Ian, Julia, Elliot and Mason, were young, Becky says they all sat down together and created a family mission statement, which they hung in a cupboard that was opened regularly.

“It was a way of reminding us what we were all about as a family,” Becky adds. “I’d often say to them, ‘You just gotta keep the main thing, the main thing.’”

Knowing what matters most is a powerful way to create an impactful life.

“KNOWING WHAT MATTERS MOST IS A POWERFUL WAY TO CREATE AN IMPACTFUL LIFE.”

Becky doubles down on that concept, saying, “If there’s something you want someone to know, tell them. Someone you need to forgive? Forgive them. Someone you want to spend time with? Spend time with them. This mindset likely stems back from losing my mom when I was 16 and, again, from working in healthcare. One of the hidden gifts of grief is that it helps you focus.”

With that focus attuned, Becky says she has been fortunate to live an abundant life thus far. Over the years, that has involved raising kids, working in faith community nursing, and cultivating passions like writing, travel, and good food and wine.

Hospitality is a way of life she has worked hard to curate as well, and hosting people for dinner at their home near Brandon is one of her favorite pastimes.

“I absolutely love the song, ‘Crowded Table,’ by The Highwomen the lyrics go, “I want a house with a crowded table and a place by the fire for everyone,” Becky adds.

Currently, she and Dan are working to create even more space around their table, as they near the end of an exciting home renovation. They custom-built their home 30 years ago, and Becky says nothing about the house has changed — save for a new coat of paint here or there — in those three decades.

Then, about a year ago, one thing led to another, and they embarked on a complete remodel.

“We needed new gutters and couldn’t decide what color to make the eave spouts. We engaged a designer, and, well, now we’ll be having black eave spouts,” Becky laughs.

The new gutter project turned into a total stylistic overhaul in collaboration with Blue Pencil Collective, an architecture firm out of the Twin Cities, and Carpentry by Design, a Builder and general contractor from Brandon. The home will be updated and modernized while honoring its original craftsman style.

“Our goal was mostly to have a bigger kitchen and dining room so we could have everyone around the table, and once that started, of course it just kept going. It’s almost like we’re creating a new house,” Becky states.

The idea of choosing how you age applies even to home projects, Becky says. She recalls reading an article in Architectural

Digest that said homeowners can, at a certain point, choose to either downsize or “fun-size” their homes. It’s a concept Becky and Dan have wholeheartedly adopted, explaining that while they briefly considered a move to downtown Sioux Falls, they ultimately realized how much they love their property and want to continue entertaining and sharing it with the people they love.

She adds that they have gotten comfortable making bold design choices, emphasizing that the house is for them to enjoy, not to prime for resale someday.

It’s an attitude of confidence that she says often comes with age.

“I think as you age, those facades start to fall away, and your raw material has a chance to really shine through. Sometimes when you’re in the thick of life, you’re so busy doing things that you don’t have time to feed certain parts of your soul, but they’re still there. When you’re older, you may simply have more time to reflect and pull those things out of yourself,” Becky says.

While in college, for instance, Becky had the chance to take ballet lessons for one semester at the Dance Gallery in Sioux Falls. As life got busy, her interest in the arts had to take a backseat, but now, some 40 years later, she has returned to the very same studio and she has begun taking ballet again.

“It’s life-giving. There’s no expiration date on your dreams,” Becky explains.

Still, while she encourages people to pursue their passions and make choices that enhance their life throughout their third act, she wants to remind everyone that it is traits like curiosity, empathy, kindness and hospitality that will provide the richest life.

“I think there’s such a tendency today to make ourselves our own project, and it’s easy to fall into that, but we always have a better day the days we look out and up rather than down and in,” Becky adds.

That concept of turning outward, or looking toward others rather than yourself, and turning upward, or looking toward God, is at the heart of Becky’s book, and ultimately, her life.

MORE ABOUT

Becky’s first book was a cookbook, titled Made with Words: Stories and Recipes from a Kitchen Wall, and published in 2018. The project was inspired when her mother and father-in-law were moving out of their home, and it was set to be demolished. Over the years, her mother-in-law had carefully adorned the wall tiles in her kitchen with her signature recipes. Becky and her daughter, Julia, photographed the recipe tiles and compiled them into a cookbook, preserving them for generations to come.

As a child of the sixties, Becky has a love for all things vintage, such as music, clothing, television, and more. Her book, Turning, includes many references to the sights and sounds of that era, including the title itself, which is a nod to The Byrds’ song, “Turn, Turn, Turn.”

All four of Becky’s children have attended Brandon Valley Schools, and all of them married people from Brandon as well (two of which were high school sweethearts).

Becky and her husband love to travel, and their most recent major trip was to South Africa last fall, with a group of people serving the nonprofit, Samaritan’s Feet. They did mission work that involved visiting schools and providing shoes for local children. Another favorite travel experience has been New Zealand, which they have visited twice for Dan’s work, and she says is basically “one big national park.”

Becky and her husband, Dan, are passionate about food and wine and co-own a winery in Napa Valley with three other families. The winery includes two brands with tasting rooms in Yountville, CA — Jessup Cellars and Handwritten Wines. Locally, they occasionally host wine dinners in collaboration with one of their favorite restaurants, Harvester Kitchen by Bryan. “We’ve been early supporters of the restaurant, and are so thrilled with the level of culinary expertise. We’ve bonded over our love of food and wine, and Chef Bryan and his wife have been gracious to invite us in to do wine dinners, where he tastes our wines and then decides what dishes to create to highlight the best of that wine.” The next wine dinner will be hosted on November 12, if you’re interested in attending!

At Dakota Sky Stone, the jewelry-making process is more than just a craft—it’s a journey fueled by passion and driven by dedicated individuals that truly love what they do.

The process may be long, but the personal nature allows the family behind Dakota Sky Stone to insure it has been done right every single time. This commitment to overseeing each phase—from sourcing to final creation— ensures that every piece of Dakota Sky Stone jewelry is a testament to superior quality and artisanal integrity.

It starts with travel to the mines

Contrary to popular belief there is not just one type of turquoise stone. In fact, there are more than 30 different varieties with characteristics all their own to make turquoise jewelry attractive to a wide array of tastes and styles.

But, before the making of a piece begins for Dakota Sky Stone, the Tice family travels to different turquoise mines to hand pick stones for their pieces. According to Annie Tice-Poseley, the type of stone and its distinct characteristics are unique to whatever mine the stones are coming from and its geographical location.

“More of your Arizona mines carry more copper, so Arizona turquoise tends to be more blue in color, and Nevada turquoise carries more iron which adds more green shades into your turquoise,” Annie explains.

Specific grades of turquoise do not exist in the manner they do for other stones like diamonds. Typically, they look for stones that speak to them with beauty, matrix designs, and specific colors. Traveling to mines and finding stones has become an outlet for long lasting, cherished memories for the Tice family.

The many stages of a stone

Before they come together as finished jewelry pieces, the stones undergo a transformative progression in multiple, meticulous stages.

“There are so many stages of the stones,” Jim Tice says. “We have some turquoise that we have had for several years and we are now just getting into cutting it.”

“Once turquoise stones are cut, they then need to be backed and formed into cabochons. After that, the final cabochons are polished and ready to be used in a jewelry piece,” Jim explains.

As for the design process, stones are usually sent to artists so they are able to create with them and others are used by the Tice family to craft their own jewelry pieces. The passion for design and creation runs so deep they find themselves in their own workshop frequently making memories and creating together; something that is so enjoyable and essential to family bonding.

“If our family could, I think all of us would be in our design rooms all day every day. We all have such a passion for what we do,” Annie shares.

Annie’s personal design process usually looks like making a piece around one stone that she has really fallen in love with. Different qualities of a stone can allow the stone to speak to individuals on a personal level.

“My grandmother always told me that a stone will speak to you, and it chooses you,” Annie reflects. “I see it every day in the stores. People just gravitate to certain stones and sometimes surprise themselves because it wasn’t anything they thought they would like.”

Whether it is the unique color or matrices. Falling in love with your stones are essential in designing jewelry that you are really passionate about. The process of designing from stone to completion can take several months.

Several silverwork stages

To some customers the silverwork is what really draws them to a piece in the case at Dakota Sky Stone. That silver work process is made of a few intricate steps.

According to Jim, all Dakota Sky Stone silver work starts out as one sheet of silver where stones are laid out. After that the bezels for stones are created and soldered to the silver sheet. The whole design is then cut out with a jewelers saw and undergoes numerous stations of buffing and polishing. Once the buffing and polishing is complete, the stones are added back into the bezels to be finalized and set into the final piece.

The commitment to Native American culture and artistry

Dakota Sky Stone embodies a profound dedication to the nearly 280 Native American artists they collaborate with, ensuring the preservation and celebration of indigenous artistry and cultural traditions. With each piece of jewelry sold, they not only showcase the exquisite craftsmanship of their artisans, but also share rich histories and stories embedded in the stones and designs.

“I believe what makes Dakota Sky Stone most special is the idea that you are not just buying a piece of jewelry, you are learning the story behind the piece,” Annie explains. “Since our family works hand and hand in every aspect of making the jewelry, we are able to give them the history of the stone, artist and where it came from.”

From their family to yours

Dakota Sky Stone cultivates a unique bond with its customers by sharing their radiant passion for the craft they have invested themselves in. Whether it is picking out the piece that really speaks to you, learning a detailed history of the creation of your piece, or gathering around for a cherished story about their travels and business ventures, customers bond with the Tice family through their dedication.

“Another thing is our passion and love of what we do is shown in our designs, our stores and how we welcome our customers,” Annie states. “We always say you may walk into our store as a customer, but you always leave as a friend.”

The LifeLight Festival is bringing the Sioux Falls Community together again for another year, but this time in a different location.

This year’s festival will be located in the heart of downtown Sioux Falls on Sept. 1 at Nelson Park. LifeLight organizers hope to bring their evangelical message to an even broader array of people throughout the community and create an environment where people can find inspiration and spiritual growth.

All in all, they want to continue their mission of “taking the church outside the walls” making it visible and accessible to the members of the community in which they serve.

Through this free event, LifeLight hopes to continue to serve the Sioux Falls community spreading its message, but to also to help connect people who want to find Jesus to a church community that can be a good fit for them.

Those attending the Sioux Falls festival can expect a large selection of Christian music artists, along with action sports group “Stunt Dudes,” and a variety of gospel centered speakers. There is a little for everyone to find something that speaks to them specifically. There will be food trucks, vendors, merchandise as well as fellowship, community, and inspiration.

With a number of long term goals in mind, LifeLight organizers hope to spread evangelism through more than just South Dakota. They aspire to host more music festivals in major hub cities around the nation. But this year, LifeLight looks forward to bridging the gap and pulling both sides of South Dakota together through their east and west river festivals. In addition, counties in between Rapid City and Sioux Falls can look forward to the “The Light Into Darkness Tour,” further bringing the state together as founders Alan and Vicki Greene lead their evangelism tour through all 66 counties.

“This tour is far more than a series of events — it’s a focused-driven evangelism initiative. LifeLight’s mission is clear, and as we journey from county to county, our aim is to ignite a spark of faith in every soul we encounter,

bringing light into the darkest corners of people’s lives,” Josh Brewer, CEO of LifeLight explains. “But our vision extends beyond the immediate proclamation of the Gospel. We are here to create awareness of LifeLight’s enduring mission and vision — to be a beacon of hope, a source of inspiration, and a catalyst for positive change in communities across South Dakota and beyond.”

Through the work being done this year, LifeLight seeks to cultivate engagement opportunities, inviting individuals to not only hear the Good News but to actively participate in the ongoing work of spreading God’s love and getting individuals plugged into the local church. Whether it’s through volunteerism, outreach initiatives, or simply sharing their stories of transformation. Globally, LifeLight hopes to create and host eight similar festivals. Growing and sharing their message and mission even further than South Dakota is on their radar.

“We have a unique model, that we are trying to have widespread evangelism outreach through planting these festivals,” Jon Setzer, COO of Lifelight says. “We have the two of the largest family-friendly, free events in the entire state where we can come together and be the church and be the State of South Dakota.”

Josh Brewer reflects that LifeLight wouldn't be possible without the dedication of those who support, volunteer, and give their heart to helping the festival come alive.

“Their selflessness not only amplifies LifeLight's reach but also embodies the spirit of community care. Without their tireless support, LifeLight's mission wouldn't shine as brightly, showcasing the profound significance in making a tangible difference in people's lives. It takes a small army to put on the festival - we can always use help through prayer, promotion, volunteerism and donations.”

South Dakota had only been a state for a short three years before one historic landmark came to be. In 1892, Louis Beckwith and Al O. Gale wanted to show people what South Dakota was about. Many people overlooked the greatness that the Midwest had to offer, so the two came up with an idea to showcase and highlight that this state was a great place to both raise a family and make a living through agriculture and raising plentiful crops. Thus, the Corn Palace came to be.

Johanna Allen is the Mitchell Convention & Visitors Bureau Marketing Lead. Today, her main role is marketing the City of Mitchell where the Corn Palace is located promoting it as the main attraction in town, grabbing the attention of interstate drivers and visitors.

“The Corn Palace really is the hub of our community,” Johanna states. “It is a tourist attraction, but it is also used by almost every organization in the city including schools, service clubs, and churches.”

When the Corn Palace was first built, no one really knew the growth that would come from it. Originally built two blocks south of its present location, the building only cost $1,500 and took less than three months to complete!

Over time, leaders in town came to the realization that the

original design of the second 1905 structure would need to be again redesigned. So, in 1921, the third building was finished in its current location on Main Street. It was just in time for the annual festival, too.

Johanna adds, “The annual Corn Palace Festival started in the same year that it was first built. During the festival today, Main Street is brought to life with tons of amusement rides, vendors, games, food trucks, and concerts.”

Each year, thousands of people from the region attend the festival alongside many locals. “We will get some tourists, but mostly it is locals or people who live in South Dakota,” Johanna says.

This year’s annual festival is set for August 21st until the 25th. A full schedule of events and details on day passes or “passports” are available on the Corn Palace website (www.CornPalace.com).

Other events that occur during the year include pedal pulls, community banquets, sporting events, first Fridays on Main, College Palooza, and more.

Johanna closes, “We have been talking about renovating the Corn Palace soon for increased seating capacity and for holding larger events. We are excited about the future of this monument in our town and we look forward to many memories over the next generations.”

Taking a Look at the Design and Murals

Over the years, the exterior murals have had a variety

of themes. In 1926, the theme was “South Dakota When the White Man Arrived.” In the 40s, themes revolved around allies and the war, and in recent years, themes have included “Stay Here, Play Here,” “South Dakota’s Home Grown,” and “Under the Big Top.”

According to Johanna, murals are chosen by the Corn Palace Entertainment board based on the potential interest to tourists. She says, “When the Corn Palace is redecorated, they replace the grains, grasses, and corn on the front and south side of the palace using produce from a local farmer.”

The murals use 12 different colors or shades of corn. Depending on the weather and growing conditions each year, murals are usually completed by the first of October. The upcoming year’s theme is “Famous South Dakotans.”

Individuals showcased in the murals feature well-known South Dakotans including Mike Miller, Bob Barker, Oscar Howe, Joe Foss, Becky Hammon, Charles Gemar, Wild Bill Hickock, and Laura Ingalls Wilder.

A recent development, the Corn Palace partners with Dakota Wesleyan University students to design the art murals. “Students are enrolled in digital media and design courses under the guidance of associate professor, Kyle Herges,” Johanna explains. The palace has become known around the world as a folk-art wonder.

-BASICS-

Whether you’re heading back-to-school for the year or prepping your fall wardrobe, now is the perfect time to nab those closet basics you’ll need for the upcoming seasons. Why basics? Not only are they your stand-alone pieces that pair with what you already own, but they’re your go-to, foundational elements of a solid wardrobe and the key to building an outfit. Having these staples will rid you of that awful experience of, ‘What am I going to wear today?’ I always suggest you start with a basic staple piece and build the outfit from there. Here are this season’s must-have basics.

Relaxed jeans. These should be the jeans you turn to again and again. Find a pair with the rise and leg opening you find flatters you the most. To achieve the true relaxed fit, find a pair with that silhouette name, look for a hip to hem straight fit or size up one. They’ll have that lived-in feel that will be perfect for pairing this fall.

Statement jackets. You’ll see various styles of a statement jacket this season. A popular one being a tweed style, but they can also be described by “textured” or “cropped.” Let this jacket be the show-piece of your outfit and the rest be minimal and subdued. This piece will pair perfectly with your relaxed jeans.

Pencil skirts. We’ve seen this trend play out in denim during spring and summer and they’ll be back this season in new fabrics. We’ll see this silhouette in faux leathers, suedes, satins and ponte fabrics.

Utility-inspired handbags. While many other bag styles are trending this season, I always aim to share the ones that are most-feasible for everyday life and wear. For details to search for, think buckles, zippers and (cargo) pockets.

Classic knits. Chunky, oversized or fitted, it doesn’t matter! A good, solid-colored sweater will be your go-to with all bottoms this season. Make sure if you’re sensitive to wools or mohair textiles that you check before you buy. Most retailers will call out these textiles, but you don’t want to get excited about something you won’t be comfortable wearing.

Don’t lose your summer glow! This dual-pan bronzer has two shades of bronzer for a customizable shade match to keep your summer glow lasting all fall and winter long! This is a toxin-free, yet long wearing bronzer that can add warmth, contouring and can be used as beautiful eyeshadow shades. Born and raised in Sioux Falls, SD, I’ve been obsessed with fashion since I could dress myself. I was one of those kids who dressed up every day for school, no sweatpants here! My first taste of real fashion was my first retail job at 15. Working in fashion and living it through my everyday outfits, I noticed that everyone would always ask me about my outfits! I’d often get personal shopping requests or asked for fashion advice.
